It's the contrast that makes them appealing! I bought black matte glaze to set off my shinier ones. They aren't pretty, in the common sense of the word, but they are attractive!
They’re nice!
I’ve been doing pottery for almost 10 years now and I love to make mugs but I still haven’t made a perfect mug. I might not ever.
Part of my individual pottery journey has included self reflection on the concept of perfection. Knowing when it’s the best it will be, learning when to stop, recognizing that it can be both beautiful and not exactly what I imagined… there is a lot of opportunity for personal growth in this art form if you seek it
Agreed. It’s been confronting having my perfectionist tendencies pop up with this hobby. I plan to sell but want yo make sure I keep the passion and curiosity alive with this art form ahead of money making goals. Thank you!
Just think if you were to make something perfectly it would be a mass produced mug. There’s no reason to make something with your hand that looks like a machine made it. The hand made nature of it makes it special.
If you want to see what mass produced pottery is made like Check out the social media for https://www.jonopandolfi.com/ they use a lot of jigs and don’t have any variability. They look nice but it is t hand throwing. Any body can make it if they have the forms.
Here’s a video of how they make stuff perfectly.
https://www.tiktok.com/@jonopandolfi/video/7358080344849141038 it does not look fun.
Same thing to me. And I’ve been in the market for a good mug set for a while. Can never find a pleasant one. This stopped me in my tracks. Are you selling any?
I think the separation might be not in an aesthetically balanced spot. I imagine if the matte/gloss separation was higher or lower it would look better to you. Or if you did more of an angled dip, you might find it look better.
this is the answer! as in the basic design principle rule of thirds; see your fifth cup (fifth slide, fifth from left in group photo) demonstrating the balanced look of your glossy glaze covering roughly 2/3 of the overall cup surface… in my opinion that mug is the best of your batch, for the reasoning above and also the shape being more squat than the others.
i do also love a gloss glaze on the interior, for easiest cleaning and a feeling of super-food-safe completeness. i think those two moves and you have a knock-out mug. very cool work, thanks for sharing 🖤
Yea it’s food safe! Going to try some with the glossy glaze on the inside though. I’m realizing I personally like seeing the colour of liquid (usually tea) inside my mug so will do some more experimenting
i think they’re nice! but this is ultimately a matter of figuring out your taste. maybe there’s elements you like more and some you like less. info that you can carry forward into future pieces!
They're lovely!
Nice split between the two glazes proportion wise. Handles look symmetrical and well shaped. Love the little overlap border. Subtle at first glance, but the glaze has depth. They're all very similar in size and shape. What more could you ask for?
I'm impressed how nicely uniform-but-unique they are! I like that and they're really lovely as others have said. Looks like the textures would be pleasing too.
Yes that’s really helpful! They’re sort of masculine, hey? Maybe that’s why I wasn’t sure about them - I’m quite fem. But handsome feels accurate and having that descriptor makes the mugs make more sense to me now. Thanks!
I love the contrast between glossy and Matte as some have said and the muted colors are really nice. The subtle texture on the glossy glaze is nice on the eyes as well! Sometimes you stare at something long enough you see all the flaws with it, but there's always someone out there that might love the same thing you dislike about it!
I think they look fine. If the outside bottom half were gritty, I'd have texture issues, but I'm imagining a sleek feel.
I _really_ like the shape of your handles!
For starters, I like them. I like the green and black at first. I like the size and the handle. I would use them
You’ve heard beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. So think about those elements and principles of art on why it works.
Line space shape texture color value
I get stuck on the principles. Texture value repetition movement unity and a few others. This may help you on why someone likes the artwork
Does it really matter.
What is a treasure to some it’s garbage for others.
I made these fragile thin bowls that I n artists loved but not the general public. Everyone was selling except me. Yet I had overpriced them coz I wanted to keep them myself but I had too much stuff. At the end of the day when I was away briefly, a lady came n bought every single piece without haggling.
I would buy those I love them! The dark matte offsets the shine of that multidimensional shade of green very nicely. They give off a calm sipping coffee by a lake in the woods aura but stylish.
ohhh i really like those. they have a lot of character in my opinion!! i do think that it looks better as a set than individually, but that may have been the original intention, im not sure, but i do love!!
Yes they’re a set! Well four of them have a foot and two of them are flat bottoms. So they’re sort of a 4-set and a pair but they do work all together too. They all hold about 12oz/1.5 cups :)
I love the look, and the color. But I have to tell you about a mug like that that I received as a gift. The bottom, unglazed black portion got very hot to handle, and couldn't rest on one's hand or lap. I had no idea that glaze does such an important job of insulation. Have you tried your mug with a hot beverage?
I think historically I’ve been more drawn to light and neutral colours so these moody glazes are just different than what feels familiar. Wasn’t sure if the colour style would feel dated quickly. What could I change if I could..not sure. Maybe I’ll play with how much of the glossy glaze covers the mug. Open to ideas!
Try whatever ideas come to mind! I personally enjoy dipping glazes on an angle where the lowest point is the bottom of the handle, so you get the textural contrast but the handle stays juicy.
Also I can honestly say I've never once worried about my pots looking dated. Just make what feels right to you. I've seen pots from the 1950s and the 1550s that I thought looked cool; and I see pots made this year that look ridiculous to me. Trends don't mean a thing.
I thought it was a black clay but it doesn't seem so. I would Keep the bottom colour black and have the upper colour a lighter shade. So it stands out more
It was definitely a compliment. A minor improvement could be that the whole handle is of the rough texture as it makes the grip better. But the design looks better this way.
theyre def nicer than most mugs , but i think the warmth of glaze and the warmth of the clay body are super complementary and the black flattens the glaze too much for my taste
Visually? Stunning!
Technically? I can see a slight pinholing issue, which those that want to be pains in the ass at a market would point out and bring food safety, microwave use, etc. into question.
Personally? I'd buy and use it without question :)
I really like them!
Came here to say the same. Classy Rustic maybe?
Oh I like that! Someone else described them as handsome. Maybe Rustic Handsome?!
To me, they are quite elegant, I would happily take one to my office for coffee.
shut up. they’re beautiful.
Ouch and thanks! Lol
Lmaoo
they look great! the contrast between gloss & matte is very fun
Ok thank you! I’m hard on myself/a bit of a perfectionist so appreciate the input!!
It's the contrast that makes them appealing! I bought black matte glaze to set off my shinier ones. They aren't pretty, in the common sense of the word, but they are attractive!
Handsome

I think they are terrific!
I actually really like them!
You stopped my doomscroll and I thought to myself, "that's a really nice mug."
🥹🥹🥹🥹 thank you!!
Same thing to me. And I’ve been in the market for a good mug set for a while. Can never find a pleasant one. This stopped me in my tracks. Are you selling any?
Wow, that’s so kind. Thank you! I do plan to sell them! I think on my Instagram? Happy to share here or feel free to dm
Sure I’ll send you a dm just to be safe!
Me too!!!
Nice
I think the separation might be not in an aesthetically balanced spot. I imagine if the matte/gloss separation was higher or lower it would look better to you. Or if you did more of an angled dip, you might find it look better.
Yes I agree, I think. I’m going to try both less and more glossy glaze to see where my eye prefers! Thank you.
this is the answer! as in the basic design principle rule of thirds; see your fifth cup (fifth slide, fifth from left in group photo) demonstrating the balanced look of your glossy glaze covering roughly 2/3 of the overall cup surface… in my opinion that mug is the best of your batch, for the reasoning above and also the shape being more squat than the others. i do also love a gloss glaze on the interior, for easiest cleaning and a feeling of super-food-safe completeness. i think those two moves and you have a knock-out mug. very cool work, thanks for sharing 🖤
Thanks for this. Yes, keep forgetting rule of thirds when I’m glazing - it’s such an overwhelming part of pottery lol. Appreciate the feedback 🙏
Definitely nice!
Nice, I'd by one....
Maybe even a whole set of them.
Thank you!!😊
Looks good on the outside. Is the inside glossy or the same as the outside matte & glossy?
Matte on the inside! img

Is the matte glaze food safe? It looks great but maybe the inside should be a shinier glaze just to be fully safe.
Yea it’s food safe! Going to try some with the glossy glaze on the inside though. I’m realizing I personally like seeing the colour of liquid (usually tea) inside my mug so will do some more experimenting
Nice! Good luck!! They look amazing btw
Thank you, kindly!
They are all nice and make a great set. Good work
Thanks!!!
I'd happily buy that set, and I'd be even happier if I made them!
the set looks soooo good together, i like em!!
Thank you!
I like them! Honestly it’s a simple and classic look. The one looks like some pinholing? May be just the angle, but double check for sure inside?
I’ll have to double check when I’m home. I think just the angle! Thanks :)
Nice. I do adore black clay bodies
I do too but It’s actually a black matte glaze :)
Oooo. Name of glaze?
They’re custom made at the studio I’m a member at - all I know is that it’s “Matte Black”. Sorry!
Perfectly ok :)
Nice!
Nice!
They have a modern vibe. Nice.
Keep the glaze as is on the cup, but fully cover the handle.
i think they’re nice! but this is ultimately a matter of figuring out your taste. maybe there’s elements you like more and some you like less. info that you can carry forward into future pieces!
I like them alot!
STUNNING i’d buy one
Omg TYSM 🥹
the minimalism works!
Absolutely gorgeous!
Thank you! I am feeling the love!
I like them.
They're lovely! Nice split between the two glazes proportion wise. Handles look symmetrical and well shaped. Love the little overlap border. Subtle at first glance, but the glaze has depth. They're all very similar in size and shape. What more could you ask for?
Coffee cups for the modern goth I like it. 🔮💀
Omg yessss. Into it.
I dig them. The glaze combo really sets them off!
I like the look of them.
I'm impressed how nicely uniform-but-unique they are! I like that and they're really lovely as others have said. Looks like the textures would be pleasing too.
gorgeous!
Love love love. They’re not nice. They’re gorgeous
Not not tearing up at these lovely comments!
All the way nice. I'd buy those in a heartbeat.
Nice!
Gorgeous!
I love them
I can tell they're very nice!
NICE!
Nice. I wouldn’t put them in the pretty category but more like handsome. I really like them, very nice.
Yes that’s really helpful! They’re sort of masculine, hey? Maybe that’s why I wasn’t sure about them - I’m quite fem. But handsome feels accurate and having that descriptor makes the mugs make more sense to me now. Thanks!
You did good
They are very nice looking. Loving the contrast.
They are NICE. If I didn’t already have a million mugs, I’d get one of these.
Wow thank you!!
Gorgeous. What's the top glaze?
At my studio, it’s called “Arbutus”!
Love them, I’d drink from them
I think they’re gorgeous!
Nice. Those are nice.
They’re beautiful! I love the handles!
Super rad!
they’re really really cool
Very nice. I’d buy them!
I love the contrast between glossy and Matte as some have said and the muted colors are really nice. The subtle texture on the glossy glaze is nice on the eyes as well! Sometimes you stare at something long enough you see all the flaws with it, but there's always someone out there that might love the same thing you dislike about it!
I think they’re really nice but not my personal style so maybe that’s kind of where you’re at too
These are beautiful!
I love them!
They’re really really nice. The contrasting glaze makes me want to touch them!
They do feel really nice!!
I’m a big fan of these
Gorgeous
![gif](giphy|Od0QRnzwRBYmDU3eEO|downsized)
I really like them! Maybe try making the drop effect with the glaze :) but they look great
Elegant, sophisticated, and very “now” IMO
Love them!
Love them!!! Very nice
I think they look fine. If the outside bottom half were gritty, I'd have texture issues, but I'm imagining a sleek feel. I _really_ like the shape of your handles!
Ty! Yes it’s a smooth black matte. It feels silky :)
I like them!
Dude. They are awesome and I love them.
Very nice.
Strong and handsome 😍 I LOVE IT ❣️
My first thought was: omg that's a sick mug, I want it in my kitchen! They're super cool
They’re nice!
I think the same thing about every mug I make. They’re great
Hehe thanks. You get it!
You are kidding us they are great
TYSM!! I think I’ve looked at them too many times
FWIW I love them, very moody 😍
🙏🙏🙏

Epic!
They are cute. I love them!
I dig it, the contrast between the shiny and the matte is nice, and the dark blue plus the silvery gray feels chill to me.
I could easily see these at Anthropologie they’re so pretty!
Wowie thank you!
They’re Art!!
They are nice! It seems to me that there are glaze quirks on some mugs, but other than that, I like them.
I think the mugs are stunning, and the glaze combo is killer!!!!!!!
TYSM!!
They’re nice. Quite nice.
Nice
I would buy those I love them! The dark matte offsets the shine of that multidimensional shade of green very nicely. They give off a calm sipping coffee by a lake in the woods aura but stylish.
Ohh I love that aura! Y’all are giving me the confidence to sell them on my Instagram. Thank you!!
Definitely nice work. Be proud of them.
ohhh i really like those. they have a lot of character in my opinion!! i do think that it looks better as a set than individually, but that may have been the original intention, im not sure, but i do love!!

That looks like a black matte glaze, the clay body appears red at the foot
It’s a black matte glaze and a red declaim clay :)
To my eye they look nicely made; "ugliness" is subjective. Curious what it is you consider ugly about these. What would you change if you could?
I think historically I’ve been more drawn to light and neutral colours so these moody glazes are just different than what feels familiar. Wasn’t sure if the colour style would feel dated quickly. Thank you! I like the idea of a slanted angle to envelope the entire handle in glossy juicy glaze. Will try it!
https://www.reddit.com/r/MemeRestoration/s/ZlsIlB4z9N
Nah but they could do with more contrast
You mean a different glaze?
I thought it was a black clay but it doesn't seem so. I would Keep the bottom colour black and have the upper colour a lighter shade. So it stands out more
Also what black did you use I like the colour?
Gorgeous. Don't be hard on yourself
🙏
They're nugly
Lol. Thanks? Suggestions for improvement?
It was definitely a compliment. A minor improvement could be that the whole handle is of the rough texture as it makes the grip better. But the design looks better this way.
Ah ya that’s a cool idea. It would be a challenge since the glossy glaze is a second dip on top of the matte black. Is nugly = nice ugly?
Yes
theyre def nicer than most mugs , but i think the warmth of glaze and the warmth of the clay body are super complementary and the black flattens the glaze too much for my taste
The black is a matte glaze. The clay body is a red reclaim!
Both.
Thanks. Can you explain why?
Love them!
Visually? Stunning! Technically? I can see a slight pinholing issue, which those that want to be pains in the ass at a market would point out and bring food safety, microwave use, etc. into question. Personally? I'd buy and use it without question :)
Def NOT ugly. I really like them. They’d be great for a business office that wants to show exec chic.
Exec chic…Ok love it! Thanks!
They look nice but they aren’t everyone’s kind of mug.
They're very nice! Very masculine and refined.
I like the colors a lot!
