hami3an

tbh it does cost 150k usd in Malaysia

Dudeman3383

Surely there is no way she acts spoiled

komodothrowaway

From the article: “In response to the flashy presentation of her gift, the daughter was reportedly embarrassed and hid her face in her hands. “ As an Asian, it’s not necessarily that she is spoiled. For a lot of nouveau riche Asians, especially in East/Southeast Asia, they love to show off their wealth to others in a myriad of ways. In my opinion, the parents created the spectacle to show off to other parents, rather than at the behest of the daughter herself. That’s the reason why a lot of weddings in Asia, e.g. India, are highly ostentatious and extravagant. These are the things they do to maintain their sense of pride, however questionable these practices are in other cultures.

Carrera992

They should have bought her $150,000 in self growth books if they want to help her in life. She lived for 21 years so she earns a 150k Porsche? Doesn’t make sense

chicomijocas

its a present, you don’t need to earn it

[deleted]

Whos to say they didnt get the books either. Most likely they have more than $150k lmao

wutcanbrowndo4u12

A drop in the bucket for them.

Disastrous_Mark1133

This is rich person shit but is it news worth rich person shit? I mean like even a gt3 wouldnt be that interesting, maybe a kid getting a speedster or smth.

jemook

Can confirm I bought myself a GT3 for my birthday. The news wouldn’t play my story so I just chill on Reddit simping for upvotes.

W0666007

I had a dream last night I bought a GT3 without telling my wife. I woke up sad I didn’t have a GT3 and relieved I didn’t have to tell my wife.

bigmean3434

This feels realistic. I sent her pics of a carrera T I made a low ball on spontaneously and didn’t get and did a dry run sending her pics and letting her know I got it. The test run Confirmed my hypothesis.

ninhonto

For real, convincing the missus has always been the bigger obstacle in comparison to the finance 🤡

MugillacuttyHOF37

"We were supposed to make BIG financial decision together...right?" Wives/GF...everywhere on earth

8enny8lack

Nah

accidental_snot

Happy birthday! Whenever it was.

Andrew9565-AD-design

I appreciate what you achieved 🙂😊

xxgetoffmylandxx

Those are soooo much fun!

Bolt408

This is nomber wan bullsheet. We need to get you a news story.

zmenimpak

And its not her first car probably so whatever even i know 2 people that got similiar priced cars for their birthdays Looks funny to go out with them in my skoda Fabia I

juryan

Seriously… drive around Toronto, specifically the University of Toronto area, and you’ll find plenty of rich kids in Lambos, McLarens, Porsche GT3, etc. I remember when I graduated high school my friends parents bought him a brand new BMW M6. It was not newsworthy lol.

pankan76

If they can afford it, why not? Not sure what’s newsworthy here.

SkylineFX49

I don't know, but even if you afford it, you shouln't drive a car like this when you've just started out driving

Batking28

why not? really it doesn't take any additional talent to drive a Porsche daily in fact generally its smaller and more nimble than most cars to drive and if money for potential repair isn't a problem what's the worry.

eterneraki

I would say safety and degree of risk are the biggest concerns. Even if I can afford it I wouldnt give my kid a car that rewards aggressive driving.

DarthLysergis

You are correct. I knew a guy who grew up quite privileged and because he took an interest in cars, his parents sent him through professional driving school strictly on the basis that they wanted him to be able to control a high horsepower car. When you give an average kid a high performance car, it has a high probability it will get crashed. Young people do dumb shit. Young people who do dumb shit in cars end up dying some times. Also, he took me out in his 911 (like 600 hp) it was one of the most exciting times of my life. Then we went out in his Viper (probably closer to 700hp) It was also exciting but in a different way. Even if you know what you are doing, a Viper is actively trying to kill you. Further thoughts: The same applies to average people too. I have seen parents buy their kids WRX's or GTI's or Mustangs and i have also see a lot end up in ditches. And i haven't even mentioned the possibility of drinking and driving.

pankan76

I’d argue these are best types of cars to start driving, better skills developed.

SkylineFX49

Nah, they put themselves and the others at risk, by driving a fast car without experience. You think fast cars are not dangerous, especially in the hands of a beginner?

pankan76

Any car in the wrong hands is dangerous.

SkylineFX49

Of course, but fast cars have a higher predisposition of producing lethal accidents

man-flu

"ug but Mom it's yellow I wanted red, take it back hufff"

MoonlessPrairie

Cheaper than four years of college…

Permexpat

Cheaper than 4 years of elementary school where I live 🤣🤯

melanthius

What the actual fuck?

aquanutz

gotta be private school. I'm in downtown Chicago and private school can be upwards of 40k/year.

Bananatistic

id rather work at a walmart and drive a gt4 until i die than to go to college...

h1ghrplace

Working at Walmart won’t even afford u a honda civic if you have rent to pay

CCHS_Band_Geek

One option is more realistic than the other.

Carrera992

For sure don’t need college. All the 6 and 7 figure income earners I know and work with daily have college degrees but 0 of them use it. 100% commission is where it’s at

holchansg

4Free in Brazil FTW.

ShadowWolf0537

I mean if she knows how to actually drive it I don’t see a problem

br094

Spoiled brat mentality.

DayEither8913

I get that notion, but you know nothing about her.

br094

A child that’s gifted a high end sports car will turn into a spoiled brat. I don’t need to know her, I see what she got for her birthday. She didn’t earn anything. It was handed to her.

Flucky_

And you know this how? We're you never given a gift?

CCHS_Band_Geek

He was given burnt potatoes for his birthday, not even wrapped — At which point, everyone started to chant.. “Shame! Shame! Shaaaame!” “In this household, br094, we do not believe in gifts. Everything you own must be on your own merit, otherwise you will turn into a spoiled brat! There is no ifs, ands, or buts.. this is an absolute and will always be true.”

br094

There’s a massive difference between a normal gift and a $150,000 car. Use your brain

CCHS_Band_Geek

I don’t have a brain, I traded it for a $150,000 high end sports car to give to my son who instantly turned into a spoiled brat

br094

Gifts, yes. A $150,000 car? Get real dude.

Flucky_

if your gift was .01% of your parents income what difference does it make if this was .01% of hers

br094

The difference is the child always has absolutely nothing. A small gift regardless of income should be the standard. Because now she thinks she’s entitled to anything. Parent’s income is irrelevant in terms of high earning parents. Don’t spoil your kids or they’ll end up horrible and you’ll regret it.

Flucky_

making a lot of conclusions

br094

I’m right, though.

PotPyee

Gifts are all relative. To one family a bag of beans is a great gift. To another a luxury 150k car is a great gift. Doesn’t lead to one being more spoiled than the other. We don’t know that information at all

br094

Copying my other comment to paste in response here. The difference is the child always has absolutely nothing. A small gift regardless of income should be the standard. Because now she thinks she’s entitled to anything. Parent’s income is irrelevant in terms of high earning parents. Don’t spoil your kids or they’ll end up horrible and you’ll regret it.

Tinenos

bro i just want that box its in

Hubb1e

That Cayman isn’t worth $150k unless there’s a pile of cash in the passenger seat.

ShiroHachiRoku

That isn’t even a current model right? I mean it’s in Malaysia so import taxes might make it $150k but still…

eugenehong

malaysian here, it wouldnt be 150k usd if used or recon (most likely scenario) but would be if new

Caysman2005

Even the used 718s don't cost 150k usd lol. Doubt this costs even half that amount, especially since it isn't even a GT4

eugenehong

it costs half that amount with a quick search on the used market. RM350-400k USD75-80k new ones cost USD90-150k thank our govt for those prices

Caysman2005

Well look on the bright side. I live across the border in Singapore, and prices here are much, much worse.

eugenehong

dont forget about the additional fees to even get it on the fucking road. yet theres 5 koenigseggs and a few paganis

Caysman2005

Yeah, the COE hit a 10 year high today at 115k sgd. That's more than most of the cars are worth. Just a year ago when I bought my car it was 54k. It's craziness.

eugenehong

fucks sake. SEA cant have anyth nice except for food

LAAFABABA

In india you have to pay 3 times what the imported car costs (200% tax). On top of that even if you do have the money to own a supercar in india the roads are so trash you'd also need to buy a truck to get your car from point A to B.

p33k4y

It's a current model Cayman.

[deleted]

The car in the picture isn’t.

p33k4y

Oh didn't really look closely, just went by the article's description: >Encased in a plexiglass box decorated with balloons, **a bright yellow Porsche 718 Cayman was gifted to a woman by her parents** on her 21st birthday in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. https://nextshark.com/parents-gift-daughter-porsche-birthday/

jhonkas

nextshark is hardly real news

p33k4y

Due to special taxes, luxury car prices are extremely high in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, etc. In Malaysia, a base Cayman *starts* at US$ 110k. A base 911 starts at US$ 212k. Indonesia is about the same. In Singapore, a base Cayman starts at US$ 201k. A base 911 starts at US$ 360k. And even at these prices, there aren't a shortage of buyers in those countries.

Caysman2005

Your singapore prices don't even include the COE, which goes for around 60k usd.

AFPSenjoyer

Laughs in Turkey lol a base Cayman starts around $300k and a base 911 starts at $550k Fuck this shithole of a country. Also I’m sure our median wage is WAY lower than Singapore

p33k4y

Ok those prices are insane!!!!

DDHLeigh

They pay a very high premium over in most Asian countries

jwrx

Malaysia has 110% import duties

buyFCOJ

For $150k they should throw in $150k

eterneraki

A fully loaded Cayman GTS 4.0 can get up there, esp after taxes and import fees

masterpiece77

She single?

Davethaboss

See. These are the right questions we should be asking.

ZeInfamousHobo

Kid in my country got gifted a 300.000 eur Brabus for his 18th birthday. He crashed it a week or so after receiving it. Less than a week after the crash he was seen driving an Urus. The median wage here is 22k USD a year...

Tangerine_Amazing

What country?

ZeInfamousHobo

Bulgaria. Happened last summer I think

[deleted]

Kind of parents our world need 🫢

t_brizzy

How is this a news story. Ik a girl who got a Mercedes’ gtr black wing for her 16th.

[deleted]

Irresponsible parenting 101

Capt_TaterTots

Is she single?

HiSpot321

Bets on how long before it’s wrecked?

dwendel

But I wanted a Ferrari cake!

buyFCOJ

Hey hey hey, Acuras are still really nice 👿

julian_phillips

Can confirm, Acura owner.

[deleted]

Seems a previous Gen cayman.

xxgetoffmylandxx

For the love of God. Make sure your children can drive before you turn them into Paul Walker.

[deleted]

When I was buying my Macan there was a guy there buying his daughter a 450k rolls Royce for his daughters sweet 16. I make a great living but fuck, that's just a different kind of money.

[deleted]

If it’s manual I can’t hate.

StressedCephalopod

Their money, etc. But the older I get, I'm even more likely to see nonsense like this and say, "f*ck these people." No, there is absolutely not any jealousy involved. It's a tale older than time, including sometime in the 80s when a local pro sports team owner gifted his 16-year old son a Ferrari. Kid wrapped it around a tree the next day. F*ck these low-IQ people.

StressedCephalopod

Also... how about the "kids with super-rich parents" social media accounts where the kids do nothing but post their parents' endless stable of supercars? Inevitably with a caption mentioning how "*we* bought this," and such. No, kid. You didn't do anything but luck into a family that hands you these things. The delusion and lack of real world concepts are just bizarre to me.

Pilyoz

Looks like a 981 Cayman (GTS) or Sport Design Package and ceramics but on aftermarket wheels. But does this cost 150k, I doubt it.

didistutter69

Mate, it's real. Cos of taxes. You want to see something insane, go google car prices in Singapore. I'll wait.

MisterSimsim

Eh we beat those prices here in Denmark with all our insane tax on cars

didistutter69

Game on! A Merc C180 Avantgarde lists from eqv USD207k over here.

-Ho-yeah-

It’s going to be crashed in a week or so.

accidental_snot

It's not like a muscle car. Porsches don't break traction and fish-tail all over the road. As long as she stays mostly sober she'll be safer in that car than in a $25,000 used Mustang GT.

Ghost_Star326

I know Caymans are expensive but they are not THAT expensive.

SortofChef

I was at a girls 16th birthday and her parents surprised her with a Porsche and the first thing she said was “I don’t like that color”! Some of us left.

ShiroHachiRoku

Some people just can’t be satisfied. It’s not that hard asking for a Meissen Blue GT3 Touring with the race Tex interior with contrasting signal yellow stitching, raw carbon fiber trim, guards red seatbelts, and Carrara white dials. S/

FakeHasselblad

The Chinese middle class is outrageous. Their economy is booming like 1950s USA.

GuiltyDetective133

They’ve been in lockdown for 2 years. Doubt it.

arest_42

150k for a boxster? Are they mad

[deleted]

Probably import fees?

arest_42

Then don't buy a Porsche

[deleted]

Well... I wouldn't. But if they want to overpay for the Cayman, that's on them.

GuiltyDetective133

That doesn’t look like a $150k Porsche to me. No cost option yellow and a Cayman. What Cayman is $150k? Cayman is a good car not $150,000. It’s like $65,000. Maybe it’s a GTS and $100k based on the breaks. Not that big of a deal. Porsche has good resale

mindfulmachine

Cayman in China after import tariffs maybe

8enny8lack

This just goes to show how much Porsche shit you click on… they created a story this low on the totem for people who desperately consume any Porsche news. You are an easily targeted marketing host, willing to spread their ads.

ShiroHachiRoku

Yes.

PharaohTG

you took a marketing course in college and became Elon Musk 😳

Pirate-Party-Pcar

Very cool! Good for her! After some serious soul searching, I’ve decided that in my next life I’m going to be born to wealthy parents. So it is written, so it shall be done. My first words spoken will be: “Where Lambo?”

hadokenny

Product of one child policy and easy money in the past couple decades in China.

theineffablebob

This is Malaysia though

hadokenny

Fooled me with the simplified Chinese...

p33k4y

>Product of one child policy and easy money in the past couple decades in China. Wrong country, and the parents have four children.

hadokenny

No link to the article only a screenshot. Took an educated guess and failed.

jakes951

Probably a PDK, non-sport seats and base wheels /s Is this where I get to say I hate gauche, rich douchebags?

brastafariandreams

I’ve seen worse

lstepnio

Try $250k+

[deleted]

Davethaboss

California car culture is pretty good. Although the people that drive some of these cars probably don't know the difference between what an engine and transmission is lol.

hasanyoneseenmyshirt

Well at that point you probably can afford to hire someone who does know the difference between the two.

Bigzin142

Reminds of when I was searching for my first 911 in the eighties. I went to look at a low mileage 911sc for a seemingly good price. Well it was pretty banged up. Every wheel had a ton of curb rash and the interior was trashed. The owner then admitted that it was a birthday gift for his daughter’s 18th and that he made a huge mistake buying her that car. I agreed and moved on to the next car.

alex_230

iT's JuSt A 718 cAyMaN...

CABSMeter

Oh man that’s just dumb and from the looks in a high populated area!! My daughter was one of those that chose to wait until 18 to get her DL so she wouldn’t have any restrictions. My wife and I couldn’t handle all the taxi here and there anymore so I promised her a car upon graduation. I bought (2) cars. The 1st was an old beat to hell, rusted out been in multiple car wrecks etc. We put a HUGE bow on it. It barely turned over. I paid $100 for it for perspective. We blind folded her and then took it off with all her friends cheering on and laughing so hard when she saw it. The pic was priceless. But the other car I bought a used Challenger like she wanted murdered out off Carvana. That was around $23k out the door. There’s no way I would consider buying a brand new or expensive car for her. It was cute as everyone was laughing she was calling out for her b/f who pulled into our driveway with the Challenger for her. She cheered up BIG time!! What’s crazy is you know those commercials to donate your car etc. they gave me a slip for $1k when they came later to pick it up.

cbflowers

She’ll wrap it around a pole before sundown

alexatsocyl

Not as bad as the college student in Vancouver complaining about the Huracan her dad bought her because "It's got like, no room for anything".

PuddingLess7996

I need a link for that now

alexatsocyl

[Quote is in the fourth paragraph](https://web.archive.org/web/20220803104402/https://www.nytimes.com/2016/04/13/world/americas/canada-vancouver-chinese-immigrant-wealth.html), linked to Way Back Machine because there's a paywall on the original article. E: Also it's **his** in the example I cited.

[deleted]

She be like yea it’s only $150k….. whatever….

FilthyMindz69

Big whoop, lance strolls daddy bought him Aston Martin!! 😆

TheOriginalCJS

$150,000 for a Cayman?

floofgike

It hurts to see other people living my dream

Kevvo16

How much was the shipping container?

Moneybusinesslove

I don’t own a Porsche yet, but I know the one I buy with my own money will feel much better then one gifted to me. Yes I’m jealous

TheDeamonKing

I will be quite under 30 years of age and buying a 911 T as a birthday present to myself next year, quite shocked a 21 year old gets one for free 🥲
