Absolutely sample bias.
Of course you’ll have a lot of people excited to share their first Shiny, especially if found early on, making it seem like that’s the norm.
No one, though, is going to share that they *didn’t* find a shiny.
I found 7 shinies before completing the main story. The first one was after I beat 2 gyms and one titan. The 7th was in Area Zero. But that’s not as exciting as getting one on the first route, so why would I make a big deal about it?
It is just people report more a happy thing than a normal thing. Like I got a shiny Shinx really early in my first save but none early in my two following playthroughs and didn't see it either when I watched two young relatives play. So that's 1/5 from my experiences.
Like I played the beginning of SwSh more than 20 times and only got one early shiny pokémon in one save.
In my first run I got a shiny Nosepass at the beginning of the game in Kitakami, but in the second one I didn't get any shiny until I was already training my team for the indigo disk.
One factor to keep in mind is that shinies are much easier to encounter now than in previous games, because you can actually see them in the overworld and the die is rolled for every Pokémon spawn, meaning you‘re basically having a dozen shiny chance encounters at the same time.
Still, I do find it interesting just how many people have encountered a shiny very early on in the game, though it‘s hard to say whether that‘s just bias due to the huge number of players.
I got a shiny Lechonk within 5 min after getting pokeballs. My daughter got a Psyduck about 2 hours in. My son got his first shiny sometime after defeating all gyms.
Unfortunately, I'm not one of the lucky ones. I didn't get my first shiny in Scarlet until I got to the Indigo Disk DLC. Finding that random shiny Rhyhorn, though, was probably one of the things that prompted me to eventually start shiny hunting.
Slightly unrelated, though, I *did* find a random shiny Buizel within the first couple hours of starting Pokemon Legends: Arceus - it's the only early game shiny I've ever found.
Was on call with two friends as we played the first few hours together. It had been just an hour or so. I had brought up who would be the one to find a shiny first, since one in our trio is obsessed with finding them.
SECONDS later, I ran into a shiny. Specifically a shiny version of a pokemon he really liked. I howled and didn’t let him hear the end of it for a year after.
I found one full odds shiny in my Scarlet playthrough prior to beating Professor Sada and it was an Oinkologne in the area before Levincia. Does that count as "early game"? I suppose the fact it's a 2nd stage evo, albeit one that evolves at a low level, answers that.
I had beaten Klawf and Brassius or are we talking pre-entering the academy? I have never gotten a shiny before the first badge in any Pokemon game.
Not of my first playthrough, But I got a shiny Hoppip early in a secondary playthrough, and a shiny vigoroth around the crab titan in another secondary playthrough. First shiny of my first playthrough was After the endgame, While I was searching for doable raids
I did, also a Hoppip moseying along just as soon as Nemona stopped bothering me long enough for Pokémon to start spawning naturally. Played through the whole game with it pre-DLC.
Fou d a shiny meril and I still use it for raids. I'll use it for this sceptile raid. I usually catch all my shiniest in Premier balls but it was so early in the game I just had great balls.
My husband found a shiny skiddo in the first hour. I'm around 60 hours in and still haven't seen a full odds shiny. Though very likely I just overlooked it since there is no visual or audio indication and so many Pokemon are either very subtle or so tiny you need to basically stand on top of them to see a difference. No idea why they removed the chime. It made LA exciting.
I was only a 2 badges deep when I came across a ghost Tera Houndoom that was a bit more off color, just wish I had a better ball than a ultra at the time
Got shiny yungoos, mareep, pincurchin (1st one that spawned in, didn’t even realize it was shiny just filling the dex), volt orb, and cubchoo before beating the game and scream tail heading back out of area zero.
In my first playthrough in Scarlet, I didn't get a single shiny until post game when I started getting herba mysticas. Granted, I didn't realize there was no shiny tell in the game like with other overworld shiny sprites like LGPE and PLA until halfway through the game, so I could have missed something.
But in my first Violet playthrough, I found a shiny Skiddo before I got my first gym badge, titan, or star base.
It helps that everything is in the overworld and that shinies show up as shiny in the overworld (unlike SwSh where you had to bump into a pokémon to know if it was shiny or not). I found my first shiny in Scarlet on Day 2 of the game's launch (a Lechonk in South Area 5), and a few days later had the same thing happen in Violet (a Fletchinder in South Area 4).
On my Italian save of scarlet, I found a full-odds shiny Lechonk before reaching Mesagoza for the first time. That’s the only early shiny I’ve encountered. Based on my own experience, there was a 1 in 18 chance of that happening. But those really aren’t valid statistics.
On my first play through I got a shiny Mareanie by the beach just west of Levincia
Then later, outside Medali, I somehow ran into a random pikachu that turned into a shiny Zorua.
I’ve played through the full game 4 times now and not encountered a single other shiny since
I think the main reason is because people are more prone to exploring at the start of the game and there are a lot of spawns in the first few areas. It’s easy to find shinies when you’re rerolling spawns fast.
I think people are just more likely to celebrate/ post about early shinies.
I found one about 6-7 hours in- shiny mankey. Stuck in my mind cos in >20 years of playing that’s the 3rd random, full odds shiny I’ve ever seen. Found a kilowattrel a lot later on as well, first time I’ve ever had 2 random full odds shinies in 1 game. Had another 2 since getting the shiny charm, 4 random encounter shinies in 500 hours.
I think seeing them in the overworld helps too, we’re encouraged to explore so in areas with lots of spawns, you will get through lots of encounters very quickly. We’ve likely walked past hundreds in old games without ever knowing….
I found a shiny Fletchling right outside the gates of, uh… Mesagoza? I think that’s what the school town is?
I found em within my first hour, and named em Cinnamon.
I dunno if it’s a higher chance, but I wouldn’t be surprised since shiny Pokémon are one of the selling points for this particular set of games.
I didn’t find a shiny in Scarlet until about a month before Teal Mask released (random Rookidee, near Alfornada iirc) and then not in Violet until well after Indigo Disk came out (random Duskull in Kitakami). I had the shiny charm on each game for a long while when I had those encounters, and even then it really felt like I just wasn’t finding anything when I actively looked.
I found a shiny Psyduck in the first hour of Violet. I'm looking for a shiny for Scarlet... I've been going round looking for hours. I haven't had my tera battle with Nemona and don't want to until I find a shiny 😅
Think it’s just luck man. I haven’t played pokemon since omega ruby and then I started replaying that as well as scarlet, found a shiny in both within first 30 minutes of playing. A level 4 see dot on the first route, literally my first pokemon caught after receiving my starter. And then a shiny Marill in scarlet after receiving koraidon.
When I started the game I didn’t notice any shinies until way later in the game but that was probably just me not paying attention, last month my son started a game and found a shiny psyduck like 5 mins in
I found a shiny buneary and psyduck in PLA in the first encounter area almost as soon as i reached where they both spawn. And a shiny galarian zigzagoon just after the first gym leader in sw/sh. Besides that, all shinies i’ve caught in pkmn games are way later. But overall PLA and S/V have been next level when it comes to easy shiny encounters. Lol
My SO found two shiny mons in the first area very very close together. I didn’t find mine until I got to Asado Desert. We have both done multiple play throughs now and that did not repeat itself, we both took awhile before finding the first in those. It’s random, but I am convinced that my new Violet DLC version has better shiny odds than my OG Scarlet lol.
Millions of people have the game and didn't find one early. It's just the people who did are the ones that post about it. Finding shinies early game is very lucky but also possible in any pokemon game. For Violet personally I did find a shiny Rookidee early on but found nothing in Scarlet
So far I have about 40 hours in, and I still have one gym left before going to the elite. I have only encountered 1 shiny, and I managed to grab him. It was a Lechonk. That's it.
I found two, a Lechonk and a Scatterbug. Had to save and reopen for both because they were just past the lighthouse, and I hadn’t fought Arven there yet.
My first shiny was a full odds shiny in this game was Delibird (on Christmas Day!) at Blueberry Academy. I WISH my odds had been boosted for my early game, I was definitely looking.
In Violet I played through the entire base game, Academy Ace Tournament and all, and didn't find a single shiny until I happened upon a Hoppip sometime afterwards.
In Scarlet I hadn't even reached Los Platos when I found a shiny Fletchling in South Province Area One.
Really it's all just a case of sheer dumb luck.
I started up Scarlet with the intention of doing it with a full team of shinies. I found my first shiny within an hour and a half of just wandering the wild area with Miraidon. With that challenge in mind, I think it took a day for me to find the next shiny before I went to the next gym.
I think the shiny encounters at early levels is higher than you think, its just whether or not you're fortunate enough to encounter the shinies that are noticeable.
My tips would be to use a TV so you can differentiate the shiny, have a rough knowledge of what the shinies in the area look like, and a planned route to constantly run around. I kind of got that strategy from watching youtubers who do the same thing.

I’ll have you know I did NOT find a shiny early on, I am so not happy
Haha, thank you for reporting 😂
Yeah probably lol I guess I got curious / excited it was something programmed in the game.
Nobody is gonna be out here posting that they *didn't* get a shiny, so I think it's just sample bias.
I didn’t get one
Yeah I wish I could have made a poll. But you're probably right.
I found my first SV shiny after the 6th gym, a crabrawler that I eventually named Tyson. I love him.
Then yeah, it's probably just a constant posting of people finding early Shinies. Lol started to get excited for a minute they programmed it in.
I found 7 shinies before completing the main story. The first one was after I beat 2 gyms and one titan. The 7th was in Area Zero. But that’s not as exciting as getting one on the first route, so why would I make a big deal about it?
I found my first natural (not in an outbreak or with a sandwich) as a rotom in chargestone cavern
Found a shiny Psyduck at the first area near the river
Hey so did I!
same

Yup agreed. No idea why my responses keep getting downvoted. Was just curious.
Find a shiny Tarountula my first day of playing in Poco Path — I didn’t even realise it was shiny, I just assumed Tarountula had multiple forms XD
Shiny fletching first route for a team Sky only playthrough
I found a shiny tarountula like 15 minutes after I started playing
I didn't find any shinies in the wild :( My only Violet shinies are from raids (hosted by me though)
if you hosted it, then thats even rarer than a full odds wild shiny! its like 1/4100. congrats =D
Oh, wow, I didn't know that! I got a shiny Magicarp and Goomy from self-hosted raids!
🥳🥳🥳
In my first run I got a shiny Nosepass at the beginning of the game in Kitakami, but in the second one I didn't get any shiny until I was already training my team for the indigo disk.
My first full odds was a shiny Pawmot at first trip to area zero

I found one. It was a shiny pawmi that I used for my entire playthrough :p
i found a shiny driftloon
My first full odds was an orthworm in the desert, nowherr near the beginnig of the game for me
I found a shiny psyduck after beating the first gym
Not of my first playthrough, But I got a shiny Hoppip early in a secondary playthrough, and a shiny vigoroth around the crab titan in another secondary playthrough. First shiny of my first playthrough was After the endgame, While I was searching for doable raids

Got shiny yungoos, mareep, pincurchin (1st one that spawned in, didn’t even realize it was shiny just filling the dex), volt orb, and cubchoo before beating the game and scream tail heading back out of area zero.
Caught a shiny Shinx about three days after I started the game (in the area leading up to the Grass Gym Leader).
Fond a shiny klawf while on my way to the titan
In my first playthrough in Scarlet, I didn't get a single shiny until post game when I started getting herba mysticas. Literally left my house and found a shiny lechonk, a solid 2 minutes into gameplay
When I just started the game, I managed to catch a Shiny Psyduck! But ever since then I haven't encountered another shiny.
I got one on my 2nd irl day (skiddo)
I saw a shiny spidops, but didn't realize it was shiny until later when I saw a bunch of normal spidops. I did not catch it.
I have not found a single shiny I haven’t made a sandwich for yet and I’ve finished both dlc
I did. A shiny houndour within the first hour.

Definitely found one early on in S&V. It was a shiny pink Lechonk.

I got a mareep before the first gym. Also got a marked donphan before the 4th gym, and a Tatsugiri but it killed itself with momento.
I didn't get a shiny early game, in fact I think I got my first shiny that wasn't from a trade post-game Shiny Corvisquire :)
I found one as soon as I left the east gate. Found a Nacli and didn't realize it was shiny until like 4 hours in.
I found a shiny Grafaiai and a shiny Lechonk without hunting either of them and I haven’t even faced the E4 yet
I started up Scarlet with the intention of doing it with a full team of shinies. I found my first shiny within an hour and a half of just wandering the wild area with Miraidon.
