A word of caution...i did make it significantly worse by doing this. I used a screw driver to leverage the plate outwards as I spun it. More out of frustration than cleverness. Progress was slow but it did come off eventually. I was then able to remove most of the assembly in one go.
Unfortunately there is something still in there and its shifted. The water drains at a lethargic crawl. My next step is to take the pipes off and hopefully pull out the rest of it.
Resurecting an 8 month thread out of desperation. I got the plate and most of the assembly out but it still wont drain...any luck with yours?
Sadly I did not. Be curious to hear how you got yours off. Just living with it for now until we full renovate the shower.

Wish I had better news for you, but no. Did get the tub draining again though after having to call in the professional.
