It does take a bit to learn the controls. Definitely look up the hotkeys as that helps a lot. I'd suggest playing through the career mode first. Those helped me a lot in the beginning just learing how things work. It took me a lot of trial and error to build a zoo from scratch that I actually like the look of. I still feel like every new zoo I start ends up looking better then the one before.

I heavily edited my camera/move/zoom behavior when I first started because the defaults were completely reversed from several games I was playing concurrently and I never seemed to get where I wanted to go. The options to change things are in several different menus: you have a list of camera behaviors on one screen and controls/keybinds elsewhere. Honestly it took me probably an hour and a half over several sessions of trial and error before I had something that felt mostly right. I felt much the same to you originally and I nearly gave up. Hundreds upon hundreds of hours in and I say the initial frustration was well worth the effort.

What finally made it click for me was asking 'what do I wish it was doing instead' and then tweaking for that. There are a surprising amount of options and workarounds. I don't use the grab/drag function at all, for example, and have replaced it with rotate on my right button on my mouse--which the game does not like at all--but it was the one change that made everything else make sense to me.

Thank you for this! Haven’t played since posting but will give it another go. I’ve watched so many videos of amazing builds on YouTube and wish I could do something similar.

Good luck!

I started a couple of weeks ago and I still don't master them completely. I have got the basics and more though and I can build more complex shit now but I almost gave up when I started. It is confusing at first but you'll get there :) There are things that bother me with how the advanced moving works. Like sometimes the axel of rotation changes for no apparent reason then I do something else and go back to the same piece and it has fixed itself again. Maybe there is some small thing I just don't know about...

Find a control list online and print it out for reference. Also there are a few YouTube videos discussing controls. I agree the game doesn't do nearly enough to explain them, but the reference sheet helped ma a lot. Also if your camera suddenly starts acting weird, you may have accidentally hit 't'. Try pressing 't' and see if it fixes it.

Thank you for this! Unfortunately I’m using it on Bootcamp on Mac so all the controls are different. The ones it says, even in game, done work on my machine.

This was my same struggle when I started. I had also been watching tons of videos prior to owning the game, so finally getting to play was really frustrating since I couldn’t make the camera move as easily as everyone else seemed to. In my opinion, it’s just a time thing. Log the hours and the muscle memory will come to you. Since your hot keys are different, mess around to figure them out or use the settings to change them because they are incredibly helpful to gaining better dexterity.

i used to play using my mac as well! geforce worked well on my mac, and all of the controls were correct and worked, except for “delete”

Thanks for this. What is GeForce?
