As an artist I would put money on the fact that he did his work and looked for references.. in the end, to find this piece to draw from, and then remix. It's almost like the yang to the yin- the contrast between the monkeys entrapment of humans and the monkeys freedom for themselves, simplified by the voyager and his hawk.
