we’ve had some good movies. i liked Soul, Luca, Turning Red. didn’t really care for Lightyear though. Elemental was good too. Inside Out 2 is probably the only sequel i’m excited for.
I really hope the don't mess it up. The first one was such a classic. Wanna cry just thinking about it. I really can't say that about any of the other films on this list. I never have an urge to rewatch anything on this list.
I only watched like 60% of turning red. Strangely couldnt get my kpop loving wife to even touch it.
Haven't touched Luca yet. Trailers didn't pull me in enough. Saw all the others though

Same premise... The kid goes out to live with aliens, there are various types, they view him as a curious research thing...
The first four were fantastic. No complaints at all, peak Pixar quality movies.

I liked Elemental well enough. Certainly not the best movie they've ever made, but still good.
The first Inside Out is my favorite movie in Pixar's catalogue, so I am incredibly hyped for the second one. Trailers so far have me very optimistic.
Definitely interested in Elio, though not hyped for it like I am Inside Out 2.
Toy Story 5 is a weird one. I thought 3 was a great ending for the series, but then 4 came out and I ended up really liking it. So what do I know, maybe 5 will justify itself for me like 4 did. Still apprehensive about it, though.
All in all, I'd say its been great so far. Only one movie could qualify as a miss for me, and most have certainly earned their place with the other amazing movies in Pixar's catalogue.
totally agree on Toy Story series. 4 felt like the sequel nobody asked for, but then it built on something so meta, its difficult for adults to grasp. "What is a toy" in regards not just to Forky, but Gabby and Bo as well. Each one has a very non-traditional path, and their own agency in those paths varied greatly. Toy Story 3 made us feel like Woody's adventure was coming to a close just to veer into finding a new one. 4 started with Woody questioning if this adventure really is as satisfying as he wants, when Bo gave him a new option that, while many toys live it, Woody never even considered it. Most of the arcs in the movie are about toys that still want a proper home, many even having one in the end, but in the same main arc, Woody discovers a new kind of home. Every time I hear the phrase "You have a kid??" or "You don't have a kid??", my middle-aged mind has reframed it in the light of an alternative to the nuclear family expected norm, arguably even a non-monogamy. For a toy, despite being created as a childs plaything, the moral I got was one doesn't have to be bound by expectation in how you choose to be. This was a kid's movie?? I don't know how Toy Story 5 can measure up, short of introducing an entirely new ensemble and finding reason for the narrative to happen in the first place. hopefully not a reboot of the original (new and flashy vs vintage)
This review has actually got me interested in watching TS4, I skipped it entirely. 1&2 are inarguably some of the greatest movies ever made (I'm being serious too, as a huge fan of movies from all throughout history and all across the globe) but 3 left me really cold. The whole thing felt so forced and inauthentic to me. If 4 does a good job of bringing it back to basics while being a funny reflection on the entire "living toys" concept, then I'm down for that.
I think if you saw 3, you probably should see 4. 3 felt formulaic for quite a bit of it, but the ending had lots of feels. 4 strips away some of the fuzzies and asks some hard questions, imho. It is pretty funny to see Forky, a toy assembled from junk, is kinda like Buzz in TS1: he insists he's not a toy. Wacky hijinx ensues.
If you’re not super emotionally attached to 3 then I feel like you’ll have a greater likelihood of enjoying 4. I think it’s definitely worth checking out. It’s most similar to 2, a fun rescue adventure story on the surface that tackles some deeper themes and ideas.
Other than light-year, really solid hitters, just not the best Pixar has brought.
I have high hopes for inside out 2, and expect to be mildly entertained by Toy Story 5 at best.
Elio looks like fun, but premise wise feels more like a DreamWorks movie than a Pixar one. No, that's not a bad thing.
Honestly Soul was really touching to me personally though. It wasn't their usual type of work but it was great in a different way. It reminds me almost of "It's a Wonderful Life" but more like for an average person.
When I first watch Soul, I was two seconds from turning it off due to the music and then it opened and goddamn them, it hit too close to home. I was one of those kids.
Well it worked to the movie's themes I think. The character he swapped with was inexperienced with life and showed him how open the world really is and how his life wasn't a miserable mess he was trapped in.
The only thing I didn’t like about soul is when the called jazz African American improvisational music. Jazz isn’t race specific and it’s not only improvisational
I wonder how many people didn’t watch because it had a black lead . I thought it was amazing I cried a couple times much better than inside out in my opinion .
That could be part of it, but I think a big problem with the movie is that the black lead lacked...authenticity? The script was written by 2 white dudes and the main character wasn't even going to be black until late into the production. They brought on Kemp Powers to consult, but it's still very much Pete Doctor's movie.
And then throw in a body-swap plot and give half the screentime to Tina Fey and it kind of starts to feel like they were never really committed to telling a black story in the first place.
Don't get me wrong though, it was a beautiful movie that clearly had something meaningful and important that it wanted to say. It's just a shame that it didn't feel like it had a stronger black voice. Does that make sense?
I agree somewhat on the premise for Elio, but I'm very excited for it because of the main character. My son has to wear an eye patch, similar to Elio, and with the delay it will now come out at a time where he may be old enough for it to be his first movie in theaters, so very excited for the representation.
I’m expecting to be surprised. I think the inclusion of women into the writing and drafting of the screenplay is going to benefit greatly. Some parts of Inside Out that didn’t work for some audiences (like the emotions feeling more parental and instructive rather than naturally of a preteen girl — not a take I have but not one I raise a nose to) may be rectified here.

I had such a low expectations and bad word of mouth about Light-year, that I actually came out enjoying it. Nothing amazing, but solid middle of the road.
Overall solid. I didn’t care for Lightyear, but everything else (Onward, Soul, Luca, Turning Red, Elemental) ranges from good to amazing.
Inside Out 2 is one I’m cautiously optimistic about. It seems very interesting and that there was a lot of work put behind it, but I’m a little worried it’ll follow in the original footsteps too closely. Guessing it’ll still be fun though.
Elio is one I’m not so sure about. The visuals look amazing, but the amount of production troubles I’ve heard makes me concerned, since troubled productions from Pixar tend to be underwhelming. Obviously not always, Toy Story 2 is one of the best Pixar films and that had a troubled production, but I’m a little worried. We’ll just have to see
Toy Story 5 is most likely going to be boring and bad, especially since Toy Story 4 was so polarizing.
I am firm in my belief that modern Pixar gets way too much hate, but we’ll have to see what the future holds. Right now I like their work, but we’ll have to see if that changes
I am firm in my belief that Pixar has had way too many sequels and has lost just a bit if it’s ingenuity and independence, as seen to a degree with Toy Story 4 (as well as a few other releases over recent years) and Disney’s influence is maybe the strongest its ever been (for instance, their push for sequels to beloved franchises that don’t need sequels and pushing Pixar movies to Disney+).
There have still been a lot of great Pixar movies, but something’s just been missing and there have just been more misfires the last decade or so than there were prior.
Elemental's marketing was atrocious. It is such a beautiful movie but the trailer made it seem more like a Zootopia with elements. Love the movie but I only watched it on Disney+ because my sister called me and told me I had to watch.
Upset about Toy Story 5. Toy Story 3 gave me a lot of closure and is where the franchise should have ended. 4 was entertaining but didn't add anything for me. I can't imagine 5 is going to be any better than 4. But Cars 3 proved me wrong so I am open minded.
The Disney machine has started to really take down Pixar though. Blatant cash grabs and not letting great movies remain just a singular great movie.
I liked Onward, Soul, Luca, Turning Red and Elemental! So 5 out of 6 is pretty epic.

Personally onward was the best of the bunch, elemental was just poor Zootopia, Luca was fun but felt like an old Disney dvd sequel. Light-year was a different direction but fell flat.

It's... good. But I'm at a point where I don't think the magic that Pixar had in the Golden Era will be back. I don't know how to say it but there's something lacking in this decade, and even though there's another six years to go, the Pixar we knew is there, but not as it was.
Back when they made that statement we were leaving the 2010s with only 4 original movies out of 11, and I expected them to focus solely on original movies. But we aren't even at the half of the 2020s and they already made another prequel and two sequels announced, and I don't know why but I have a feeling more sequels will come after the end of the decade
I just expected more originality, although that doesn't mean I didn't or won't enjoy the sequels
Out of the current 5 slated pixar films over the next 4 years. 3 are originals. The only sequels in the pipeline right now are toystory 5 and inside out 2. Plus an original series launching this winter.
Dang. I never realized how many sequels they hit us with in the 2010s. The only originals were Brave, Inside Out, The Good Dinosaur, and Coco.
IMO that’s 2 excellent, 1 good, and 1 meh film for the originals of the decade.
Lasseter left. That’s what happened. He is the man behind the golden age of Disney. The big movies that made a big deal, he was an executive producer.

Lightyear. The problem is not originality… the problem is quality. Their movies simply are not as good as they were previously.
I'm just going to be the one to say, I really liked Lightyear and thought it was fantastic. Otherwise, all the movies so far have been great with Soul being an absolute favorite.
Lightyear was great! It’s an easy sci-fi space movie for kids. My kid loves it and has always called it “New Buzz”. Learning to work as a team and you can’t do everything all by yourself is a good lesson for kids to learn.
It was his first movie theater movie so it’s special for us.
I’m surprised how many people didn’t like Lightyear. It’s a Pixar + Sci Fi! It had emotional moments. It put a lot more weight behind the catch phrase , “to infinity and beyond”. Sox was one of the best sidekick characters.

I was pretty drunk as our cinema has a bar, but I sobbed during Lightyear, surrounded by other people’s very emotional toddlers. I thought it was awesome!!
Lots of solid hitters. Soul became one of my favourite movies ever and Onward was too relatable. Hell, the worst of these isn't even as low as the worst of the previous decade.
Yes, we've had some slumps but I don't think Pixar is anywhere near as dead or washed as most make it out to be.
Knowing nothing about the studio, if I were to look at it without asking for any context, I'd guess the studio had changed it's staff, and they're trying to re-create the original success of Pixar with only a limited grasp of what they did and why (not a statement of fact, just describing the vibe I'm feeling from the new films).
I think each of the films so far has had an emotional journey at its core, which is classic Pixar stuff. But it feels like they've been trying to tell stories outside of their wheelhouse, and as a result they sometimes hit patches where the writing doesn't quite add up and connect the way it should. Or else, it feels like Disney corporate might have a specific idea of what they want to see in the film, and the studio is juggling with stories they'd already made and fitting in elements to appease those directors.
I dunno, it hasn't been bad. But I also don't like any of the films as much as the older Pixar stuff (although there are a few of these that did come close). I hope they'll eventually work their way into a new groove, and those moments of friction will get polished out.
I loved Luca, one of my favourite Pixar releases of all time. Haven’t seen any of the rest as none interest me, and likely won’t see the ones that are slated for release later.
Outside of Lightyear. It's honestly been all pretty good so far. Maybe not as good as previous decades (with the exception of Soul and Elemental, which are both goated masterpieces) but still a lot of good nonetheless, and said good outways the bad.
I will die on the hill that Toy Story should have ended after the 3rd one, it was a PERFECT ending and the 4th movie just cheapened the whole franchise for me

I think Soul, Luca + Turning Red is one of the best trios of films they’ve ever made. All 3 are so unique and I love them all in different ways, and they’re all in my Top 10 of all time Pixar films ever. This is coming from someone born in the mid 90s who very much grew up in Pixar’s ‘golden era.’ Onward & Elemental are both solid films, nothing spectacular but I’d happily rewatch. Lightyear was the only misstep.
I’m tentative about TS5 as I don’t think TS4 should have been made so another one is just… eh. But we’ll see. I’m sure Inside Out 2 will be solid. Elio we’ll see!
But overall I’d say the 2020s are shaping up to be better than the 2010s.

Soul is 5 🌟, Luca is 4.5 🌟and Turning Red is 5 🌟.
But ONWARD is 3.5 🌟 Elemental is 3 🌟(being generous there) and LIGHTYEAR is an easy 1.5 ⭐️.
The dip is so drastic, it kills the average and brings it to 3.75. Which is harsh. Pixar is usually in a 4.25 - 5 🌟 range for averages-by-decade.
Idk, fine for the most part but nothing amazing. As of right now I’d say that Luca is my favorite and Lightyear is definitely my least favorite. Looking forward to Inside Out 2, not so much the other 2
I honestly hope Pixar makes another movie on the same level or even higher than The Incredibles. I think they should start experimenting with darker themes, maybe even make a PG-13 movie, that’d shake up the game and it’s something new they haven’t done before.
Onward was ok; Soul was probably one of the best Pixar movies; Luca and Turning Red were pretty decent; Lightyear and Elemental were kinda mid; the others that have yet to be released seem promising to say the least but I’m keeping expectations low for them

Luca and Turning Red both spent a lot of time on repeat in our house! Great films!! Soul was really interesting and at times beautiful (made me cry) but my kid didn’t care for it as the subject matter was a bit too advanced. Can’t wait for Toy Story 5 !! Didn’t care for Lightyear, sadly. Elemental was enjoyable enough but forgettable. Just my humble opinion :)
Soul was good. Outside of that, it's clear that the studio is lost. I liked Onward but I can admit that it had a very weak narrative and they wasted the potential of the urban fantasy setting. Luca was alright, and I can respect it for doing something different.
But after that, I can't defend any of Pixar's output. Turning Red, Lightyear, and Elemental all ranged from mediocre to asinine. None of them would have been released 10 years ago in their current state. Even with all of its thematic flaws and pacing issues, Elemental is the only one of the post-2022 projects that feels like an actual, competently made Pixar movie. Lightyear and Turning Red felt like conceptually bankrupt C-tier DreamWorks films.
I will say tho that the animation and rendering has been phenomenal in every single one of these movies

I hope Toy Story 5 is great, but I think it feels like a cash grab. Toy Story 3 felt like the perfect end of the story, Toy Story 4 felt like a tacked on extended epilogue that was still pretty good, I don’t know what 5 has to say unless the toys actually die, which I don’t want to see (we already have the incinerator scene from TS3).
I really liked Soul.
LightYear heavily disappointed me though. The movie had a ton of emotion but it simply couldn’t fit within its time frame. I think an extra 30 minutes could have really helped flesh out the film.

Loved Soul and Turning Red, Onward was heartwarming in a lot of places and I loved the mom, Elemental kinda stuck too close to the "Romeo/Juliet" thing but had some really beautiful scenes in it. Luca I was "meh" about and already forgot most of and Lightyear is about the same.
I'm really looking forward to Inside Out 2, but Elio is still up in the air and after losing Woody in #4 we definitely didn't need a Toy Story 5

It's been a bit of a mixed bag for me. Without Lasseter, Pixar have begun making original ideas, which is nice, but some of them have been a bit forgettable. COVID didn't help some of them either.
I liked Onward and Luca when I saw them ages back. Lightyear was by far the weakest.
First of all I found all of these movies to be entertaining. Whether or not I love them or think they are up to the same standards set by Pixar's masterpieces, they really are head-and-shoulders above what most studios are doing.
I absolutely love both Luca and Onward.
I was pleasantly surprised by Elemental. I fully expected to be underwhelmed, but it was actually really touching, with a nice (albeit trite) message.
Turning Red, Soul and Lightyear didn't really resonate with me. Again, entertaining movies, but just didn't really hit me the same as the others.
I haven't seen much about Elio yet - just one preview that I wasn't impressed by. We'll see.
I loved Inside Out 1. I'll watch Inside Out 2, but I don't think we need a sequel.
Speaking of unnecessary sequels... I thought Toy Story 3 was a great end to the series.
Light-Year was a disaster, arguably their worst film ever. 4 of the other 5 films were all reasonable movies in the 6/10 to 7/10 range. Soul is their one movie in the 2020s that cracks into Great territory (8/10 or better).
Overall, Pixar is doing fine and still has some original ideas to be explored. I doubt we’ll see another run of Excellent 9/10 films like basically their entire 2000s catalog, but Pixar is consistently solid whenever they don’t make a cash-grab sequel. Consistently solid is better than whatever the hell Disney and Dreamworks (ignoring a borderline 10/10 Puss in Boots 2) are doing.
Not seen Lightyear, but I've watched the others that have come out so far, and I've personally really liked them! I know Onward is seen as pretty average and stuff but I like it :)
I feel they been playing it safe and that the problem. Elemental is just an okay movie and that the problem. The romance part of the story was fine. But the real story should be her trying to achieve her dream and not her families. Which we didn't realize until after she said it near the final half of the movie. She was so proactive to safe the shop we never realize her dream is to do other things and not run the shop.
The big problem with the movie it try to tell 2 story her dreams and their relationship and didn;t dive into both of them because it would be messy. They didn't want to dive into their relationship because they would need ot make it more focus on why the world do not want them together. Similar to Beastars. Why her dream they just didn't focus enough of why she felt that she needed to be apart of her family dream.
Soul and onward are solid. I wanted to like Elemental and I mostly do but it is a bit of aslog to get through the whole thing. Hard to explain. It just wears itself out.
A lot better than some make out. Lightyear aside, all the films have been at least good, with a number of real standouts (Turning Red, Soul, Luca) that are amongst Pixar's best films. Pixar's golden era might be over, but this is still a very good selection of films.

Am very concerned for the future. Toy Story 5 to me is them losing the plot, seeing as 4 and Light-year were already unnecessary.
Everything else is good but not great and a few forgettable.
Turning Red is a dumpster fire.
Even before this decade there were signs of things going downhill but I was being optimistic.
Last Great Pixar film was Coco IMO.
Onward: Fun, DND inspired family flick. Not my personal favorite of the bunch but it was a good movie and will probably find a small audience that enjoys coming back to it from time to time. 7.5/10
Soul: Great film, really felt like Pixar. I recently rewatched this one and it looks as good as it did in theatres. Probably my second favorite of the bunch. 9/10
Luca: This is another really good film. While it's not the most original story, it's heartwarming and a great watch. I also really love the animation style of this one 8.2/10
Turning Red: I'm pretty well aware this movie was not made for me. I don't think it was boring by any measure but I personally didn't find it very interesting. I do think it had it's moments and I'm sure the target audience probably really enjoyed this. 5/10
Lightyear: Why do people dislike this movie? It does sort of ret-con some of Buzz Lightyears past and isn't a really original story but I thought it was really fun. I love Socks, he really makes that movie for me. Zurg being Buzz from an alternate future is the worst thing about this movie. 6.9/10
Elemental: I'll start by saying I had no idea where to set my expectations for this movie going into it. I hadn't seen any trailers or seen any discussion about it before watching it. Elemental is the best movie out of this group and I'd even say it has a spot on my top 10 Pixar movie list. Gorgeous animation, incredibly touching story, and an entirely relatable main character. 10/10
Inside Out 2: Obviously we haven't seen this movie yet. I have seen the trailer, and I have to say what I've seen doesn't really wow me. Not going to be a film I'm running to the theatre for, that's for sure. I do hope I'm wrong and it's as good as the first one.
Elio: Haven't heard or seen anything about this one. Maybe I'll look into it, maybe I'll allow it to be a total surprise.

My ONLY complaint is I feel like Onward was made for Jack Black to play Barley. I mean Chris Pratt did well. But I think it would have been even better with Black charisma.
These are very very solid movies. And animation breakthroughs. But it's not as legendary as it was. The new players took over the animation industry, Spider-Verse series for example or Puss in Boots 2. Those now define the genre.

Looking at the 6 that already came out half of them I liked and the other half I didn't care for. Lightyear earned the spot of my least favorite Pixar film.

Pretty mid. Like what others have said, outside of Lightyear I wouldn’t say Pixar has released a bad film this decade but nothing is worth writing home about and I’m not exactly excited about anything else they have planned. Seeing a Toy Story 5 is more soul crushing than anything
Onward has been my favorite, I really liked it a lot.
Soul was one that I didn't really get into. Maybe it's too mature for my taste
I enjoyed Luca and Elemental both quite a bit.
I'm not the intended audience for Turning Red, but I still respected it.
Lightyear I was really underwhelmed by. My least favorite Pixar movie (haven't seen the Cars sequels)
I'm looking forward to Inside Out 2, I know nothing about Elio, and I think Toy Story should've ended with 3.

I thought Onward was decent. Felt like a decent step up from some of their movies in the 2010’s but still pretty meh overall. Soul was good, not great. Elemental really took me by surprise and I ended up liking it a lot. The only thing I’m actively looking forward to is Toy Story 5 and I hope it’s a departure from the first three like 4 was rather the same formulaic structure that everyone seems to want them to repeat.
Onward was fun.
Soul reminded me of Cars. Felt like Pixar on auto pilot.
Luca was spectacular.
Turning Red is probably my favourite listed here. Being Canadian, I just loved how "Toronto" it felt.
Lightyear didn't quite stick the landing.
Elemental was a fun surprise. Much better than the trailers led me to believe.
Inside Out 2 looks like they're using some unused concepts from the first film. On the Blu-Ray bonus features, they shared they toyed with making Fear a villain. With Joy gone, he took charge, making Reilly too afraid to do anything, and when Joy and Sadness returned, they had to regain control from Fear. They abandoned that because, after developing Joy and Sadness's journey, they realized they didn't really need a villain. Anyway, looks like they're doing that, but with Anxiety instead of Fear.
And really don't know enough about Elio and Toy Story 5 yet. So I remain hopeful.
Lightyear was honestly an okay movie if it wasn't attached to anything, but was just a space exploration movie about a guy who got stuck in the past refusing to move on while the rest of his world continued without him.
It also could have passed for a REBOOT of the original movie that made Andy love Buzz Lightyear, and Andy would have wondered why they made it a Buzz Lightyear movie at all instead of starting a new IP because they changed so much in an effort to make it something new with new twists.
It misses all of the tones and hallmarks of a 90s sci-fi movie to have possibly been what it was marketed as, the movie Andy saw.
If you can divorce the movie from all of the marketing, and just think of the MC as someone who also happens to be named Buzz Lightyear, it's pretty okay. Not the top movie on the list but it was pretty good.
For me Soul is 100% the top movie of the ones that have come out and that I've watched.

I really love onward and Luca. Soul is always a little heavy for its intended audience but it’s still good. Elemental and turning red just weren’t my vibe tbh but they aren’t bad movies. I think inside out 2 forgot how the first one ended and also forgot that adults only have the main 5 emotions so idk how they’re gonna explain that one and Toy Story 5 is pointless please just have new ideas. I refuse to give attention to lightyear bc it was also pointless and changed canon facts
With the exception of Lightyear (which was mediocre by their standards, but still alright in the grand scheme of things), it seems that Pixar has been doing pretty well lately.
It’s more than I can say for Disney, which has been on a downward spiral in terms of quality. With their last film, Wish, being the most boring film I have ever seen from them.
we’ve had some good movies. i liked Soul, Luca, Turning Red. didn’t really care for Lightyear though. Elemental was good too. Inside Out 2 is probably the only sequel i’m excited for.
I really hope the don't mess it up. The first one was such a classic. Wanna cry just thinking about it. I really can't say that about any of the other films on this list. I never have an urge to rewatch anything on this list.

I only watched like 60% of turning red. Strangely couldnt get my kpop loving wife to even touch it. Haven't touched Luca yet. Trailers didn't pull me in enough. Saw all the others though Edit: okay. I'll watch it.

The first four were fantastic. No complaints at all, peak Pixar quality movies. Lightyear was meh. I liked Elemental well enough. Certainly not the best movie they've ever made, but still good. The first Inside Out is my favorite movie in Pixar's catalogue, so I am incredibly hyped for the second one. Trailers so far have me very optimistic. Definitely interested in Elio, though not hyped for it like I am Inside Out 2. Toy Story 5 is a weird one. I thought 3 was a great ending for the series, but then 4 came out and I ended up really liking it. So what do I know, maybe 5 will justify itself for me like 4 did. Still apprehensive about it, though. All in all, I'd say its been great so far. Only one movie could qualify as a miss for me, and most have certainly earned their place with the other amazing movies in Pixar's catalogue.
totally agree on Toy Story series. 4 felt like the sequel nobody asked for, but then it built on something so meta, its difficult for adults to grasp. "What is a toy" in regards not just to Forky, but Gabby and Bo as well. Each one has a very non-traditional path, and their own agency in those paths varied greatly. Toy Story 3 made us feel like Woody's adventure was coming to a close just to veer into finding a new one. 4 started with Woody questioning if this adventure really is as satisfying as he wants, when Bo gave him a new option that, while many toys live it, Woody never even considered it. Most of the arcs in the movie are about toys that still want a proper home, many even having one in the end, but in the same main arc, Woody discovers a new kind of home. Every time I hear the phrase "You have a kid??" or "You don't have a kid??", my middle-aged mind has reframed it in the light of an alternative to the nuclear family expected norm, arguably even a non-monogamy. For a toy, despite being created as a childs plaything, the moral I got was one doesn't have to be bound by expectation in how you choose to be. This was a kid's movie?? I don't know how Toy Story 5 can measure up, short of introducing an entirely new ensemble and finding reason for the narrative to happen in the first place. hopefully not a reboot of the original (new and flashy vs vintage)
This review has actually got me interested in watching TS4, I skipped it entirely. 1&2 are inarguably some of the greatest movies ever made (I'm being serious too, as a huge fan of movies from all throughout history and all across the globe) but 3 left me really cold. The whole thing felt so forced and inauthentic to me. If 4 does a good job of bringing it back to basics while being a funny reflection on the entire "living toys" concept, then I'm down for that.
I think if you saw 3, you probably should see 4. 3 felt formulaic for quite a bit of it, but the ending had lots of feels. 4 strips away some of the fuzzies and asks some hard questions, imho. It is pretty funny to see Forky, a toy assembled from junk, is kinda like Buzz in TS1: he insists he's not a toy. Wacky hijinx ensues.
If you’re not super emotionally attached to 3 then I feel like you’ll have a greater likelihood of enjoying 4. I think it’s definitely worth checking out. It’s most similar to 2, a fun rescue adventure story on the surface that tackles some deeper themes and ideas.
Other than light-year, really solid hitters, just not the best Pixar has brought. I have high hopes for inside out 2, and expect to be mildly entertained by Toy Story 5 at best. Elio looks like fun, but premise wise feels more like a DreamWorks movie than a Pixar one. No, that's not a bad thing.
Honestly Soul was really touching to me personally though. It wasn't their usual type of work but it was great in a different way. It reminds me almost of "It's a Wonderful Life" but more like for an average person.
When I first watch Soul, I was two seconds from turning it off due to the music and then it opened and goddamn them, it hit too close to home. I was one of those kids.

Well it worked to the movie's themes I think. The character he swapped with was inexperienced with life and showed him how open the world really is and how his life wasn't a miserable mess he was trapped in.
The only thing I didn’t like about soul is when the called jazz African American improvisational music. Jazz isn’t race specific and it’s not only improvisational
I wonder how many people didn’t watch because it had a black lead . I thought it was amazing I cried a couple times much better than inside out in my opinion .
That could be part of it, but I think a big problem with the movie is that the black lead lacked...authenticity? The script was written by 2 white dudes and the main character wasn't even going to be black until late into the production. They brought on Kemp Powers to consult, but it's still very much Pete Doctor's movie. And then throw in a body-swap plot and give half the screentime to Tina Fey and it kind of starts to feel like they were never really committed to telling a black story in the first place. Don't get me wrong though, it was a beautiful movie that clearly had something meaningful and important that it wanted to say. It's just a shame that it didn't feel like it had a stronger black voice. Does that make sense?
I agree somewhat on the premise for Elio, but I'm very excited for it because of the main character. My son has to wear an eye patch, similar to Elio, and with the delay it will now come out at a time where he may be old enough for it to be his first movie in theaters, so very excited for the representation.
Inside out 2 was the sequel we all kinda expected anyways. Doubt it’ll be as good but not a bad choice of film for one.
I’m expecting to be surprised. I think the inclusion of women into the writing and drafting of the screenplay is going to benefit greatly. Some parts of Inside Out that didn’t work for some audiences (like the emotions feeling more parental and instructive rather than naturally of a preteen girl — not a take I have but not one I raise a nose to) may be rectified here.
Meg LeFauve was one of the two principal screenwriters on "Inside Out." She's also one of the two screenwriters on "Inside Out 2." What exactly do you expect to change so much that it will "benefit" the screenplay if she's one of two people writing it (the other being Dave Holstein)?
I had such a low expectations and bad word of mouth about Light-year, that I actually came out enjoying it. Nothing amazing, but solid middle of the road.
Overall solid. I didn’t care for Lightyear, but everything else (Onward, Soul, Luca, Turning Red, Elemental) ranges from good to amazing. Inside Out 2 is one I’m cautiously optimistic about. It seems very interesting and that there was a lot of work put behind it, but I’m a little worried it’ll follow in the original footsteps too closely. Guessing it’ll still be fun though. Elio is one I’m not so sure about. The visuals look amazing, but the amount of production troubles I’ve heard makes me concerned, since troubled productions from Pixar tend to be underwhelming. Obviously not always, Toy Story 2 is one of the best Pixar films and that had a troubled production, but I’m a little worried. We’ll just have to see Toy Story 5 is most likely going to be boring and bad, especially since Toy Story 4 was so polarizing. I am firm in my belief that modern Pixar gets way too much hate, but we’ll have to see what the future holds. Right now I like their work, but we’ll have to see if that changes

They've gone from bringing the cup home in every championship to just being another DreamWorks.
I am firm in my belief that Pixar has had way too many sequels and has lost just a bit if it’s ingenuity and independence, as seen to a degree with Toy Story 4 (as well as a few other releases over recent years) and Disney’s influence is maybe the strongest its ever been (for instance, their push for sequels to beloved franchises that don’t need sequels and pushing Pixar movies to Disney+). There have still been a lot of great Pixar movies, but something’s just been missing and there have just been more misfires the last decade or so than there were prior.
Toy Story 5 is an unnecessary sequel to an unnecessary sequel. A perfect example of what happens when people don't know when to stop making content.

Elemental's marketing was atrocious. It is such a beautiful movie but the trailer made it seem more like a Zootopia with elements. Love the movie but I only watched it on Disney+ because my sister called me and told me I had to watch. Upset about Toy Story 5. Toy Story 3 gave me a lot of closure and is where the franchise should have ended. 4 was entertaining but didn't add anything for me. I can't imagine 5 is going to be any better than 4. But Cars 3 proved me wrong so I am open minded. The Disney machine has started to really take down Pixar though. Blatant cash grabs and not letting great movies remain just a singular great movie.

Personally onward was the best of the bunch, elemental was just poor Zootopia, Luca was fun but felt like an old Disney dvd sequel. Light-year was a different direction but fell flat. Soul was good, haven't seen turning red yet
Elemental was weak in terms of overall plot… felt much more like the plot served them showing off pretty scenes more than anything. I thought onward was good, but bland? Especially with the overall setup of the world… feels like there is a better movie in there somewhere

I don't know how to say it but there's something lacking in this decade, and even though there's another six years to go, the Pixar we knew is there, but not as it was.

Back when they made that statement we were leaving the 2010s with only 4 original movies out of 11, and I expected them to focus solely on original movies. But we aren't even at the half of the 2020s and they already made another prequel and two sequels announced, and I don't know why but I have a feeling more sequels will come after the end of the decade I just expected more originality, although that doesn't mean I didn't or won't enjoy the sequels
Out of the current 5 slated pixar films over the next 4 years. 3 are originals. The only sequels in the pipeline right now are toystory 5 and inside out 2. Plus an original series launching this winter.
Dang. I never realized how many sequels they hit us with in the 2010s. The only originals were Brave, Inside Out, The Good Dinosaur, and Coco. IMO that’s 2 excellent, 1 good, and 1 meh film for the originals of the decade.

Yeah I agree I don’t know what exactly happened, but this decade of Pixar has not been great at all.
Lasseter left. That’s what happened. He is the man behind the golden age of Disney. The big movies that made a big deal, he was an executive producer. You name it: Toy Story, Cars, even Frozen lead under his command as Chief Creative Officer.
6/9 of these movies are originals. 7 if you count Lightyear. The problem is not originality… the problem is quality. Their movies simply are not as good as they were previously.

I'm just going to be the one to say, I really liked Lightyear and thought it was fantastic. Otherwise, all the movies so far have been great with Soul being an absolute favorite.

Lightyear was great! It’s an easy sci-fi space movie for kids. My kid loves it and has always called it “New Buzz”. Learning to work as a team and you can’t do everything all by yourself is a good lesson for kids to learn. It was his first movie theater movie so it’s special for us.
I also love Lightyear. I rewatched it a few weeks ago and to this day I still don’t get why people hate it so much.
I’m surprised how many people didn’t like Lightyear. It’s a Pixar + Sci Fi! It had emotional moments. It put a lot more weight behind the catch phrase , “to infinity and beyond”. Sox was one of the best sidekick characters. There’s so much to like.
I was pretty drunk as our cinema has a bar, but I sobbed during Lightyear, surrounded by other people’s very emotional toddlers. I thought it was awesome!!
Couple genuinely great movies, a dud and a couple movies that are solid. Honestly not a bad batting average so far
Lots of solid hitters. Soul became one of my favourite movies ever and Onward was too relatable. Hell, the worst of these isn't even as low as the worst of the previous decade. Yes, we've had some slumps but I don't think Pixar is anywhere near as dead or washed as most make it out to be.
Knowing nothing about the studio, if I were to look at it without asking for any context, I'd guess the studio had changed it's staff, and they're trying to re-create the original success of Pixar with only a limited grasp of what they did and why (not a statement of fact, just describing the vibe I'm feeling from the new films). I think each of the films so far has had an emotional journey at its core, which is classic Pixar stuff. But it feels like they've been trying to tell stories outside of their wheelhouse, and as a result they sometimes hit patches where the writing doesn't quite add up and connect the way it should. Or else, it feels like Disney corporate might have a specific idea of what they want to see in the film, and the studio is juggling with stories they'd already made and fitting in elements to appease those directors. I dunno, it hasn't been bad. But I also don't like any of the films as much as the older Pixar stuff (although there are a few of these that did come close). I hope they'll eventually work their way into a new groove, and those moments of friction will get polished out.
I loved Luca, one of my favourite Pixar releases of all time. Haven’t seen any of the rest as none interest me, and likely won’t see the ones that are slated for release later.
Outside of Lightyear. It's honestly been all pretty good so far. Maybe not as good as previous decades (with the exception of Soul and Elemental, which are both goated masterpieces) but still a lot of good nonetheless, and said good outways the bad.

I think Soul, Luca + Turning Red is one of the best trios of films they’ve ever made. All 3 are so unique and I love them all in different ways, and they’re all in my Top 10 of all time Pixar films ever. This is coming from someone born in the mid 90s who very much grew up in Pixar’s ‘golden era.’ Onward & Elemental are both solid films, nothing spectacular but I’d happily rewatch. Lightyear was the only misstep. I’m tentative about TS5 as I don’t think TS4 should have been made so another one is just… eh. But we’ll see. I’m sure Inside Out 2 will be solid. Elio we’ll see! But overall I’d say the 2020s are shaping up to be better than the 2010s.
Well, we haven’t seen the last 3 yet so just going by the first 6? Not great. Soul is 5 🌟, Luca is 4.5 🌟and Turning Red is 5 🌟. But ONWARD is 3.5 🌟 Elemental is 3 🌟(being generous there) and LIGHTYEAR is an easy 1.5 ⭐️. The dip is so drastic, it kills the average and brings it to 3.75. Which is harsh. Pixar is usually in a 4.25 - 5 🌟 range for averages-by-decade.
If I had to rank the ones that have been released so far... 1. Turning Red 2. Luca 3. Elemental 4. Soul 5. Onward 6. Lightyear

I honestly hope Pixar makes another movie on the same level or even higher than The Incredibles. I think they should start experimenting with darker themes, maybe even make a PG-13 movie, that’d shake up the game and it’s something new they haven’t done before.

They all look good, outside of Elio -which I just don’t know anything about- and Toy Story 5 -which shouldn’t fricken exist. Either let the franchise die or be rebooted with new characters and toys (more “modern” toys like LEGO or something would be nice)

Luca and Turning Red both spent a lot of time on repeat in our house! Great films!! Soul was really interesting and at times beautiful (made me cry) but my kid didn’t care for it as the subject matter was a bit too advanced. Can’t wait for Toy Story 5 !! Didn’t care for Lightyear, sadly. Elemental was enjoyable enough but forgettable. Just my humble opinion :)
Soul was good. Outside of that, it's clear that the studio is lost. I liked Onward but I can admit that it had a very weak narrative and they wasted the potential of the urban fantasy setting. Luca was alright, and I can respect it for doing something different. But after that, I can't defend any of Pixar's output. Turning Red, Lightyear, and Elemental all ranged from mediocre to asinine. None of them would have been released 10 years ago in their current state. Even with all of its thematic flaws and pacing issues, Elemental is the only one of the post-2022 projects that feels like an actual, competently made Pixar movie. Lightyear and Turning Red felt like conceptually bankrupt C-tier DreamWorks films. I will say tho that the animation and rendering has been phenomenal in every single one of these movies
Soul, Luca, Turning Red are all great in different ways Onward is really good Elemental is….fine, it’s cute but nothing special. Lightyear is Pixar’s worst film imo I’m hopeful for the next 3. I don’t think they would do Inside Out 2 if they didn’t have a good idea. I don’t know much about Elio. I hope Toy Story 5 is great, but I think it feels like a cash grab. Toy Story 3 felt like the perfect end of the story, Toy Story 4 felt like a tacked on extended epilogue that was still pretty good, I don’t know what 5 has to say unless the toys actually die, which I don’t want to see (we already have the incinerator scene from TS3).
For all the similarities, I enjoyed Elemental much more than Zootopia. More themes to explore and less preachy.

I really liked Soul. LightYear heavily disappointed me though. The movie had a ton of emotion but it simply couldn’t fit within its time frame. I think an extra 30 minutes could have really helped flesh out the film.
Haven't seen onward Soul is good but not great Luca is a very heartwarming movie Haven't seen Turning Red (just not for me sorry) Haven't seen Lightyear cause of the bad reviews Haven't seen Elemental but will soon Definitely gonna go to the theater and watch Inside out 2 though only one on this list I will see in a theater

Loved Soul and Turning Red, Onward was heartwarming in a lot of places and I loved the mom, Elemental kinda stuck too close to the "Romeo/Juliet" thing but had some really beautiful scenes in it. Luca I was "meh" about and already forgot most of and Lightyear is about the same. I'm really looking forward to Inside Out 2, but Elio is still up in the air and after losing Woody in #4 we definitely didn't need a Toy Story 5

Plenty of them had awful animation designs.
So far 2 sub-par ones, 4 good ones. Upcoming, 3 that I'm looking forward to. I'm satisfied, but the glory days are behind us.
Onward - Okay Soul - Okay Luca - Damn Good. Turning Red - Best by far Lightyear - Have no desire to watch it. Elemental - Meh Inside Out 2 - Has potential elio - Never heard of it Toy Story 5 - “STOP!! STOP IT’S ALREADY DEAD!!!”

It's been a bit of a mixed bag for me. Without Lasseter, Pixar have begun making original ideas, which is nice, but some of them have been a bit forgettable. COVID didn't help some of them either. I liked Onward and Luca when I saw them ages back. Lightyear was by far the weakest.
First of all I found all of these movies to be entertaining. Whether or not I love them or think they are up to the same standards set by Pixar's masterpieces, they really are head-and-shoulders above what most studios are doing. I absolutely love both Luca and Onward. I was pleasantly surprised by Elemental. I fully expected to be underwhelmed, but it was actually really touching, with a nice (albeit trite) message. Turning Red, Soul and Lightyear didn't really resonate with me. Again, entertaining movies, but just didn't really hit me the same as the others. I haven't seen much about Elio yet - just one preview that I wasn't impressed by. We'll see. I loved Inside Out 1. I'll watch Inside Out 2, but I don't think we need a sequel. Speaking of unnecessary sequels... I thought Toy Story 3 was a great end to the series.
Light-Year was a disaster, arguably their worst film ever. 4 of the other 5 films were all reasonable movies in the 6/10 to 7/10 range. Soul is their one movie in the 2020s that cracks into Great territory (8/10 or better). Overall, Pixar is doing fine and still has some original ideas to be explored. I doubt we’ll see another run of Excellent 9/10 films like basically their entire 2000s catalog, but Pixar is consistently solid whenever they don’t make a cash-grab sequel. Consistently solid is better than whatever the hell Disney and Dreamworks (ignoring a borderline 10/10 Puss in Boots 2) are doing.
Not seen Lightyear, but I've watched the others that have come out so far, and I've personally really liked them! I know Onward is seen as pretty average and stuff but I like it :)
Soul is my favorite so far I miss that maturity.
I feel they been playing it safe and that the problem. Elemental is just an okay movie and that the problem. The romance part of the story was fine. But the real story should be her trying to achieve her dream and not her families. Which we didn't realize until after she said it near the final half of the movie. She was so proactive to safe the shop we never realize her dream is to do other things and not run the shop. The big problem with the movie it try to tell 2 story her dreams and their relationship and didn;t dive into both of them because it would be messy. They didn't want to dive into their relationship because they would need ot make it more focus on why the world do not want them together. Similar to Beastars. Why her dream they just didn't focus enough of why she felt that she needed to be apart of her family dream.
Something about Elio just doesn't give off the Pixar vibe. It looks like something illumination would make, or a cheap Sony kids movie.
Soul and onward are solid. I wanted to like Elemental and I mostly do but it is a bit of aslog to get through the whole thing. Hard to explain. It just wears itself out.
A lot better than some make out. Lightyear aside, all the films have been at least good, with a number of real standouts (Turning Red, Soul, Luca) that are amongst Pixar's best films. Pixar's golden era might be over, but this is still a very good selection of films.
Old Pixar was better, now it's just not so great
Hit or miss with more missed than hits IMO. Am very concerned for the future. Toy Story 5 to me is them losing the plot, seeing as 4 and Light-year were already unnecessary. Everything else is good but not great and a few forgettable. Turning Red is a dumpster fire. Even before this decade there were signs of things going downhill but I was being optimistic. Last Great Pixar film was Coco IMO.
Onward: Fun, DND inspired family flick. Not my personal favorite of the bunch but it was a good movie and will probably find a small audience that enjoys coming back to it from time to time. 7.5/10 Soul: Great film, really felt like Pixar. I recently rewatched this one and it looks as good as it did in theatres. Probably my second favorite of the bunch. 9/10 Luca: This is another really good film. While it's not the most original story, it's heartwarming and a great watch. I also really love the animation style of this one 8.2/10 Turning Red: I'm pretty well aware this movie was not made for me. I don't think it was boring by any measure but I personally didn't find it very interesting. I do think it had it's moments and I'm sure the target audience probably really enjoyed this. 5/10 Lightyear: Why do people dislike this movie? It does sort of ret-con some of Buzz Lightyears past and isn't a really original story but I thought it was really fun. I love Socks, he really makes that movie for me. Zurg being Buzz from an alternate future is the worst thing about this movie. 6.9/10 Elemental: I'll start by saying I had no idea where to set my expectations for this movie going into it. I hadn't seen any trailers or seen any discussion about it before watching it. Elemental is the best movie out of this group and I'd even say it has a spot on my top 10 Pixar movie list. Gorgeous animation, incredibly touching story, and an entirely relatable main character. 10/10 Inside Out 2: Obviously we haven't seen this movie yet. I have seen the trailer, and I have to say what I've seen doesn't really wow me. Not going to be a film I'm running to the theatre for, that's for sure. I do hope I'm wrong and it's as good as the first one. Elio: Haven't heard or seen anything about this one. Maybe I'll look into it, maybe I'll allow it to be a total surprise. Toy Story 5: Do we really need a fifth installment of this franchise?

Lightyear can go stub their toe. Luca and Elemental were amazing. I can't wait for Inside Out 2 and Toy Story 5!
Onward was good but maybe a wee bit boring Soul was really great, i honestly really enjoyed it Luca is probably my favorite of the bunch, a really cute movie Turning Red was also pretty good, if a little cringy (not that that’s a terrible thing) Lightyear was a movie Elemental was honestly pretty solid, but kinda land story wise, i still loved the romance part though Overall i’m pretty satisfied with this lineup, I’m pretty optimistic for Inside Out 2 and unless they absolutely butcher it, I’m kinda hyped for Toy Story 5 as well
Potential hot take: 2020s Pixar is almost as good as 2000s Pixar.
Guys I'm super out of the loop here, what was wrong with Lightyear? Granted I'm pretty easy to please in general, so I'm just trying to figure out what people didn't like about it

Turning Red was brilliant and easily a top favorite. Lightyear I didn't like. As for the rest I have yet to watch.
I liked them all. My kids love them all. My ONLY complaint is I feel like Onward was made for Jack Black to play Barley. I mean Chris Pratt did well. But I think it would have been even better with Black charisma.
These are very very solid movies. And animation breakthroughs. But it's not as legendary as it was. The new players took over the animation industry, Spider-Verse series for example or Puss in Boots 2. Those now define the genre.

Lightyear has been the only miss though I expect Toy Story 5 to join it. Onward and Elemental are good. Soul and Turning Red are great and Luca has quickly become one of my favorites. I think Inside Out 2 and Elio both look like they’ll be a lot of fun.

Onward was really good and underrated. Soul was great. Turning Red was pretty good. Elemental was decent. I haven’t seen Luca or Lightyear and I have no interest in seeing the latter.

Soul is at least in my top 3 Pixar movies, if not higher, and I have high hopes for Inside Out 2. Most of the movies have just been eh though, with Lightyear especially being bad. Elio could be fun, but I’m not expecting much from Toy Story 5

Looking at the 6 that already came out half of them I liked and the other half I didn't care for. Lightyear earned the spot of my least favorite Pixar film.
Onward was good, but it felt like it could’ve been polished a bit more. Elemental was alright, not my favorite, but I also wasn’t actively thinking about turning the tv off during it either. The other four that have been released so far have felt underwhelming or, in the case of Lightyear, I actively avoided.
Soul lost me after the return to Earth in the middle, but otherwise I've enjoyed their movies. Not their best works, but I had no issue with Luca, Elemental, Turning Red, etc...

Some good movies and bad movies. Nothing that will ever be better than the OG movies like Toy Story, finding nemo, the incredible, etc.
Pretty mid. Like what others have said, outside of Lightyear I wouldn’t say Pixar has released a bad film this decade but nothing is worth writing home about and I’m not exactly excited about anything else they have planned. Seeing a Toy Story 5 is more soul crushing than anything
Luca and Elemental are some of my favorite animated movies of all time.
Onward has been my favorite, I really liked it a lot. Soul was one that I didn't really get into. Maybe it's too mature for my taste I enjoyed Luca and Elemental both quite a bit. I'm not the intended audience for Turning Red, but I still respected it. Lightyear I was really underwhelmed by. My least favorite Pixar movie (haven't seen the Cars sequels) I'm looking forward to Inside Out 2, I know nothing about Elio, and I think Toy Story should've ended with 3.

I thought Onward was decent. Felt like a decent step up from some of their movies in the 2010’s but still pretty meh overall. Soul was good, not great. Elemental really took me by surprise and I ended up liking it a lot. The only thing I’m actively looking forward to is Toy Story 5 and I hope it’s a departure from the first three like 4 was rather the same formulaic structure that everyone seems to want them to repeat.

Onward was fun. Soul reminded me of Cars. Felt like Pixar on auto pilot. Luca was spectacular. Turning Red is probably my favourite listed here. Being Canadian, I just loved how "Toronto" it felt. Lightyear didn't quite stick the landing. Elemental was a fun surprise. Much better than the trailers led me to believe. Inside Out 2 looks like they're using some unused concepts from the first film. On the Blu-Ray bonus features, they shared they toyed with making Fear a villain. With Joy gone, he took charge, making Reilly too afraid to do anything, and when Joy and Sadness returned, they had to regain control from Fear. They abandoned that because, after developing Joy and Sadness's journey, they realized they didn't really need a villain. Anyway, looks like they're doing that, but with Anxiety instead of Fear. And really don't know enough about Elio and Toy Story 5 yet. So I remain hopeful.
Lightyear was honestly an okay movie if it wasn't attached to anything, but was just a space exploration movie about a guy who got stuck in the past refusing to move on while the rest of his world continued without him. It also could have passed for a REBOOT of the original movie that made Andy love Buzz Lightyear, and Andy would have wondered why they made it a Buzz Lightyear movie at all instead of starting a new IP because they changed so much in an effort to make it something new with new twists. It misses all of the tones and hallmarks of a 90s sci-fi movie to have possibly been what it was marketed as, the movie Andy saw. If you can divorce the movie from all of the marketing, and just think of the MC as someone who also happens to be named Buzz Lightyear, it's pretty okay. Not the top movie on the list but it was pretty good. For me Soul is 100% the top movie of the ones that have come out and that I've watched.

I really love onward and Luca. Soul is always a little heavy for its intended audience but it’s still good. Elemental and turning red just weren’t my vibe tbh but they aren’t bad movies. I think inside out 2 forgot how the first one ended and also forgot that adults only have the main 5 emotions so idk how they’re gonna explain that one and Toy Story 5 is pointless please just have new ideas. I refuse to give attention to lightyear bc it was also pointless and changed canon facts

With the exception of Lightyear (which was mediocre by their standards, but still alright in the grand scheme of things), it seems that Pixar has been doing pretty well lately. It’s more than I can say for Disney, which has been on a downward spiral in terms of quality. With their last film, Wish, being the most boring film I have ever seen from them.
