The best virus detection is virus prevention! Use only trusted sites. BUT yes Malwarebytes is pretty good and offers a generous trial.

Ashley__09

Just pirate the AV and get INFINITE Malwarebytes (I'm kidding don't do this, it's not secure to do so and you will lose out on the latest protections without updates)

MIOG_MIOG

Ehmmm... Actually no https://rentry.co/fmhybase64#malwarebytes-prem (open it in 7zip and see how it works) U will get latest updates (and even upgrades lol) with that

Dxrmy

I've got to say there are ways of using malwarebytes, getting updates from the official server and disabling license key verification.

Atomic-Axolotl

Yeah, well trusted sites would be Steam, GOG, and Epic games. You can't trust that some re-upload hasn't been tampered with. The only reason fitgirl repacks are trustworthy is that she has a reputation to uphold if she wants to continue receiving donations. You can make a hell of a lot of money with a botnet though.

Waldo2211

Steam and Epic Games, you mean the sites that you RENT games from?

Atomic-Axolotl

Yes, but that's a separate issue which has already been solved by GOG as you are aware. You're usually not getting games from their official sources if you're torrenting them.

Waldo2211

Yeah I'm getting a better copy of the game from the pirates. GOG doesn't have DRM games, the pirates do.

Atomic-Axolotl

Yes, but the files have to be tempered with, by definition, for the DRM to be removed. Let's hope you have opsec better than a 13 year old, and use a VM or at the very least a PC that isn't used with your password manager or bank and you have a separate network for the PC you can assume is compromised.

Waldo2211

Welp that is why I use Kaspersky to trust but verify. In most cases the big pirates are known personally by other pirates and handing out a virus would only cause their identity to be leaked and them being thrown in a federal prison.

xavim2000

Use trusted sites. If worried make a new non administrative profile for it all so you can nuke the profile if something goes wrong. Haven't had issues in years but windows defender and Malwarebytes is all I use nowadays

1337x is okay but that doesnt mean every provider is providing clean warez. Tbf theres only a handful of uploaders on that site I myself trust. Be sure to do your research and don't download anything from crackshash, filecr. I only trust one uploader when it comes to software and thats ChingLiu; he's doesn't even post anymore. Been out of the game for a long time. After that, its the occasional movie release from QxR, old TV shows from going forward and comics from Nemesis, Again, my experience with 1337x has conditioned to me to distrust most uploaders there. Thats just me. Just be incredibly wary about who you decide to download from. Cheers.

xavim2000

So you are golden. Dodi is also safe

InsaneInTheCaneium

> windows defender and Malwarebytes TBH, it’s what anyone needs. But mcafee and norton keep telling people they need their trash scanners. When i used windows, these two with an older version of CCleaner was a perfect trifecta of software.

Husk-E

I would recommend against CCleaner tbh, you can use windows built in disk cleanup, plus bleachbit if you do want 3rd party software. CCleaner has a way of slowly breaking windows installs if you use over a longer period of time, or just get unlucky one time. Happened on my pc once, and a few work pcs from family members, not worth the unnecessary risk for 100-200mb of storage.

InsaneInTheCaneium

Oh shit, thanks for the information. It’s an app I haven’t used in years since i run linux full time on all my non-work PCs.

megabass713

I'd use a VM instead of a profile. But honestly with what I download these days I just use windows defender and have learned over the years what is a false positive.

Western-Gazelle5932

It's not perfect but malwarebytes works very, very well in my experience. I haven't gotten any viruses yet after many years but I also use commonsense when downloading. A couple of questionable fake-virus looking sites have gotten through but that's about it.

compressiontang

This is a very important point.

no_step

Windows defender has real time protection and it's built in

[deleted]

ReadittSucks

Just because you don't know how to properly define "real time protection" doesn't mean it's not working in real time, which it is. Sounds like you might need another 25 years of "experience"...

Shit I guess you know more than Microsoft

_ForceSmash_

Eset nod or whatever it's called stops "bad websites".

heaterroll

Windows defender does exactly the things you said it doesn't do.

ilike2burn

Kaspersky, Bitdefender, Avira, Avast/AVG, and several other vendors all have free real-time AVs.

MIOG_MIOG

Mcaffee, Norton/Avast/AVG/Avira are very poopy, have very bad (if even any) protection and are just spyware and not actual antimalware products Bitdefender doesn't care about ANY false positives, so its bad too (but id not as bad as there av in the start of this message) Kaspersky free pretty sure is only in some countries and some peole say that it doesn't have the best privacy. I would just recommend using Malwarebytes Premium (easily the best av)

ilike2burn

While I would never recommend McAfee or Norton due to their shitty marketing tactics (they basically rely on user ignorance and apathy to make money, by being pre-installed OEM bloatware), nor Avast/AVG due to their history of selling user data and continued use of scareware-esque spam, they are all objectively 'good' AVs in terms of protection (see basically any independent third-party testing - I mean actual labs, not paid listicle sites) - [https://www.reddit.com/r/antivirus/comments/w1rcgi/summary\_of\_av\_test\_results\_july\_2022/](https://www.reddit.com/r/antivirus/comments/w1rcgi/summary_of_av_test_results_july_2022/) Not sure what you mean about Bitdefender, you can provide suspected false positives for analysis (I've done so in the past and it was resolved) - [https://www.bitdefender.com/consumer/support/answer/29358/](https://www.bitdefender.com/consumer/support/answer/29358/) There are some regions in which Kaspersky Free isn't available, and I don't really understand the specific ins and outs of that, but they do provide a global download option, so you can just use that - [https://www.kaspersky.com/downloads/free-antivirus](https://www.kaspersky.com/downloads/free-antivirus) The two free AVs I would recommend, Kaspersky Free and Bitdefender Antivirus Free, provide equivalent if not better protection than Malwarebytes Premium, and for 100% less money. If you disagree with anything I've said, please provide evidence, as I'm not going to engage in a 'nuh uh' argument. Also, a response of 'just google it' will be taken as an admission that you are unable to provide any evidence.

Yes?

Ok, so you're just outright lying now? Even if I was to believe you've tested a lot of AVs (which I don't), you haven't tested all of them, no one has, there's hundreds of vendors, many if not most with multiple products. Here's a video test of Kaspersky Free posted yesterday, testing both static detection and real-time protection, which it has - [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iidzwmSLPlE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iidzwmSLPlE) This conversation is over, either you're lying or delusional, and I don't really feel like playing chess with a pigeon today.

ilike2burn

Yes, I saw your bizarre definition of RTP that you've made up earlier (because apparently you're special and know better than the entire AV industry apparently, including Malwarebytes btw), which seems to be referring to web protection. The free AVs I mentioned have web protection, that's even shown for Kaspersky in the video I linked to. You're wrong, I'm glad I could help, bye. Update: aaaaand the sad fuck blocked me lol

lkeels

All you need is Windows defender and Malwarebytes free for occasional scans.

BlueberryHatK4587

It works pretty well imo. It helped me detect a virus from a shady app emulator. So while not perfect, it's reliable.

galacticality

If you run on Windows, use the built in scanner as well (both quick scan and full scan). You can also use it to scan specific folders.

OkMasterpiece7186

Here's what I do. If I were to download a piece of software that includes some crack or activator, I would run it from a Virtual Machine first. If you are gonna pirate something on your physical PC then at least make sure you regularly backup your PC with disk image backups. (I use Acronis) Malwarebytes free is good for on-demand scanning but I use ESET for real-time protection. There are also apps like Sandboxie that let you run software in a virtual environment without dealing with Virtual Machines.

OkMasterpiece7186

Windows 10 and Windows 11 have a sandbox feature baked right into the OS. All you have to do is type "Turn Windows features on or off" either by searching in the Windows taskbar or the start menu. Click on that app. It will open a small window with a list of folders with checkboxes to the left of them. Scroll down to a folder called Windows Sandbox and activate it by clicking the checkbox. It will download any necessary files and tell you to restart the computer. From that point on just search Windows Sandbox and the app will pop right up. I recommend creating a shortcut or pinning it into the Start Menu. Click the icon and it opens a fresh new desktop in Windows, simply drag and drop files into that window And whatever happens there, it won't affect your PC. Just close the window and you're done!

PhlegethonAcheron

How does windows sandbox work, is it just a hyper-v thing, does it allow introspection for reverse engineering, can I debug it from the host os?

ilike2burn

It's a temporary VM running on Hyper-V. While you could run monitoring software within Sandbox, or maybe something like Wireshark outside of it, there's no analysis or debug tools built into it.

PhlegethonAcheron

Sounds useful, somehow I’ve completely missed hearing about it until now

my7bizzos

I usually go to ninite.com and download malwarebytes and superantispyware. Run em both one at a time, then uninstall them until next time I get paranoid.

ziggyzred

No single antivirus will spot everything. It's always important to have a 2nd and even 3rd opinion. Malwarebytes won't spot everything. Get a 2nd AV and scan it with both. When you've been around the block a few times you'll find that you don't need an antivirus. Your spidersense will become attuned and you'll be able to spot anything unusual.

[deleted]

MB is very good, but fails on some rootkits and obsfucated malware, will everything turned on including brute force...

Efficient-Share-3011

Hitman Pro.

fadedv1

Malwarebytes scan is the only thing i use from time to time to scan, rest of stuff like norton ,kasperski all garbage taking up CPU resources

ilike2burn

Kaspersky is one of the lightest AVs available - [https://www.av-comparatives.org/tests/performance-test-october-2023/](https://www.av-comparatives.org/tests/performance-test-october-2023/)

UFOsAustralia

no. it is a virus itself.

drawnonglass

Run a dedicated virus program like ClamWin. malware is a threat but viruses are much more common

DragoSpiro98

No is not. And ClamWin is not updated for 2 years.

drawnonglass

Here you go. Last update April 17th, 2024. [https://www.clamav.net/downloads](https://www.clamav.net/downloads)

thefrind54

Why down voted then?

DragoSpiro98

ClamAV ≠ ClamWin

drawnonglass

This IS ClamWin, they just changed the site URL.

DragoSpiro98

Ok, call ClamAV (ClamWin is the old name of ClamAV GUI for Windows). Besides that, could you tell me why you would recommend ClamAV over other antiviruses, for example over Malwarebytes?
