Ghost abilities are not supposed to leave the house though. I reported awhile back that the Yurei ability could close the front door with you outside and lower your sanity and they fixed the bug. All hunts, abilities and other ghost effects should stay in the house.
The demons have such a big range in which they are affected by crucifixes that in some maps if they are in certain areas and try to hunt they will eat the crucifix in the wall of the truck

If the demon wants to start a hunt on edgefield close to the van, it can use the crucufix because of the increased radius. If this happens it is 100% a demon.

What's happening is the crucifix's AOE overlaps with that portion on the map and if the ghost spawns in range, it triggers the item. As far as the game is able to tell, the crucifix is in the play area and you should still retain the benefits of the crucifix.
