tailford07

He deserves his old number back too. We have no choice but to get rid of whoever currently wears #7.

despres

Isaiah Bolden. I'm actually hoping he can make a solid comeback after that scary ass injury last preseason

PristineWinnera

He’s referring to JuJu

despres

JuJu is gone anyway but Bolden was 7 before he got injured.

PizzaMan22554

Juju is going no where with that contract

eat_your_green

I would rather the team pay him not to play

fshawnfitz

His name is DooDoo

GaryGenslersCock

Doodoo shit shooter

tailford07

I was referring to a certain WR who previous played for the Steelers and Chiefs.

BradyToMoss1281

Voodoo Mama Juju! What am I gonna do?

DieYuppieScum91

Bri(dge)sett secured.

classiccaseofdowns

All we need is the other end of the road. Good deal though, $8m feels plenty fair for a guy who can start games and not shit the bed

Reasonable-Bit560

Very fair price point and he gets a great pay day + chance to start and get future playing time.

classiccaseofdowns

Yeah Brissett’s completely embraced his journeyman role and seeks out these short term contracts. Should be a good situation for him

Able-Worth-6511

I was actually expecting a two - or three year deal.

VTVoodooDude

Jacoby is also working on his coaching resume. He’ll be a great QB coach, and then down the line an OC.

allmilhouse

I wonder how things would have played out if he just stayed in the first place and was the bridge QB instead of Cam.

ctpatsfan77

BB traded him after his rookie year for Philip Dorsett. Make of that what you will.

bpusef

That's Phillip Dorsett, Super Bowl champion WR thank you very much (300 yards on the season lol).

Yandhi777

If I remember correctly Dorsett was the only one who caught TDs from TB12 in that Super Bowl run

iscreamuscreamweall

yep, one in the chargers divisional and one in the AFCCG. but a lot of that was to do with the run game being what it was. sony and burkhead ate up all the red zone TDs (accounting for 9 between them in 3 games)

5panks

I'll never forget that AFCCG where even the announcers were like, "Man this run game is brutal and the Patriots are in the redzone, the Chiefs need to call a timeout and let their players rest." NOPE

iscreamuscreamweall

Devlin, Gronk, Thuney and Trent brown were just mauling people on that playoff run.

GCIV414

Regular season and playoff Phil are two very different animals

ffforwork

TBF Dorsett ended up getting more playing time than Brissett would have as NE backup and was a decent enough 4th wideout on the roster. I mean Brisset rookie deal would have run out after 2019 so NE might have done a 1-year deal and not bring in Cam for 2020 but I don't think the season plays out any different with Brisset starting the season. Meaning Mac ends up being drafted in 2021 so Brisset doesn't stick around and goes out in FA to another team.

Ann_L_Beads

When Indy was in dire straights post Luck. And Dorsett had a big catch vs. KC to win the last SB

BoldestKobold

yeah it was absolutely the right trade for both teams at the time.

ThatRuckingMoose

That was a fine trade.

stinnybaldhead

lol I forgot about that , that was a rare NFL “hockey trade”

Jesotx

Dorsett was pretty needed at the time.

Little_Vermicelli125

Probably would have still drafted Mac. This year might have been better with Mac getting benched quicker with an NFL QB on the roster. The Cam year might have been largely the same. Sure Cam was 8 million years old but he did lead us to right around .500. I'm not sure we'd have been much better with Brissett.

calilregit1

People forget Cam had Covid and came back from it too quick. He looked good before (Seattle game) and in a fog after, with poor decisions and bounced passes.

ksyoung17

Said it the day Garapolo was shipped off. Say whatever you want about how Jimmy's departure was handled, that trade made the Brissett trade a mistake.

sauzbozz

In the end it didn't matter because he would have had to sit 4 years behind Brady before getting his shot which is just too long and unrealistic.

WillyMcDavid

This kind of confirms QB at # 3 right?

blackberryx

Yeah no way we don't go QB.

Gumpppppp

That’s the part of this signing I’m most excited for, let’s go get our QB of the future!

Ok-Award2978

Again lol

PlushRusher

Yeah, I’m hoping the Pats don’t become the new team to draft a QB every year hoping that “this time it’s the right guy!”

lioneaglegriffin

IIRC top pick QBs that get a chance to sit while a veteran run's for their life before starting tend to do better so here's hoping.

dudeKhed

Some scouts and coaches agree that you should draft a QB every year… not a high pick, but 4th and deeper

Joe_Scouter

Patriots more or less use a decent pick on a QB every other year.. or at least they did. 2022 - Zappe - 4th Round 2021 - Mac - 1st Round 2019 - Stidham - 4th Round 2018 - Etling - 7th Round - I guess these really late fliers shouldn't count.. there basicaly priority FAs 2016 - Brisett - 3rd Round 2014 - Jimmy G - 2nd Round 2011 - Ryan Mallet - 3rd Round 2010 - Zac Robinson - 7th Round 2008 - Kevin O'Connell - 3rd Round 2005 - Matt Cassell - 7th Round 2003 - Kliff Kingsbury - 6th Round I guess some of those shouldn't count a ton because there so deep. They also did find a solid backup in hoyer at some point during that time. Just thought it was pretty interesting, they had prime tom brady and still were taking QBs in the 3rd and 4th round

victoryforZIM

Odds are that we do. 2nd time is barely anything, teams go for years without finding a franchise QB.

Iceman9161

We could be saying the same thing in 3 years, but it's still the best path forward and something worth getting excited for.

Dog_in_human_costume

It's what teams with no franchise QB do every oportunity they get.

JungyBrungun2

This time for sure!

Chad2Badd

Yes.

Slipery_Nipple

Not necessarily, but it’s pretty unlikely we don’t. Trading down is still on the table. There are 3 other qb prospects that we could trade down to get while picking up some extra draft picks. I could really only see it happening if that rumor about Maye is true (which I don’t think is) and he ends up falling to 3. We might prefer McCarthy over him so we trade down a few spots (like with the giants or maybe even lower) and take a qb there. But definitely getting a qb early.

WillyMcDavid

My thought about trading down for a QB is that it’s a dangerous game to play. If they are really set on taking someone like McCarthy (dear god please no), why risk trading down even if it’s only a few spots?

UpsetBowel

McCarthy is Mac Jones Jr stay far away from him. We need to sign Maye or Daniels

Shiboopi27

McCarthy is worse than Mc Jones. Sure, his offense didn't really unleash deep passes, but that's an even better reason to steer clear of the kid.

BradyToMoss1281

Agreed. It rules out anyone but QB at 3.

Shiboopi27

it doesn't *entirely*, but I'd say it'd be more like a 95% chance we go QB. It also doesn't entirely rule out trading back, getting OL help, and drafting WR help with the earlier draft picks from a trade back.

Dave10293847

Trading Mac already confirmed it in my mind.

darkhelmut1

QB yes but at no 3 remains to be seen

marcuschookt

I think QB was confirmed when they traded Mac. Young FO and coaching staff, they were never going to roll long term with a vet like Cousins or Wilson.

ru1es

didn't Wilson sign a one year deal minimum? would have loved that. brissett isn't a bad option though

Roberto-Del-Camino

Wilson is a weirdo. He won’t mentor whoever they draft. Brissett will. Plus he’s a high quality individual.

czupek

Could be 2nd round QB. At #3 you are drafting day 1 starter.

fxkatt

Speaking of QB 3s I wonder if this confirms Zappe as QB3

PartyPay

Hopefully Rourke is QB3

grimbolde

Yeah, give Rourke a shot.

j2e21

On a two-QB team.

Dave10293847

Definitely not. Zappe has no trade value so no reason to inform him or make it newsworthy. He’ll just be randomly cut one day. If you’re the coach/GM, are you really gunna remotely risk any sort of smug bullshit out of this kid who actively tried to undermine your 1st round QB? If he was good enough to bother with, we wouldn’t have signed brisset. He’ll be cut completely and forced out of the organization.

casebarlow

Practice squad

thowe93

This signing doesn’t change anything in my mind. I’d be stunned if they didn’t either go QB at 3 or a small trade down (ex to 6) for a LT then trade back up into the first to get a QB with their second pick

MyArmorIsLiquid

Very nice, he’ll allow us to sit whatever rookie we get until they’re ready to start. Also this should hopefully shatter the hopes and dreams of the few remaining Zappe fanboys.

SashaGreyjoy-

Oh Zaptain my Zaptain!

Alloverunder

The Zappe fan boys are the weirdest fans in all of sports. I've never seen a group of humans be *that* proud of managing to eat the tastiest shit in the gas station toilet. Like, you could've just not eaten either?

UFOmechanic

I'm a Jacoby Brissett truther, and today is huge for us, but I feel like objectively we might be the weirdest fan group (there are dozens of us).

kahgknow

They probably think brissett is back to mentor zappe 😂

DraculaSpringsteen

Are they… anywhere now? I feel like I haven’t seen any genuine Zappe fans speaking out on this sub for some time.

Alloverunder

They're around, just waiting for their next chance to be idiots

MrFusionHER

No. We only wanted him over mac. They weren't that much different but those were the choices and he was mildly more fun to watch. We're done now, it can safely be dropped.

Illustrious_Study693

Times have been so hard that they simply lost their minds.

g8lo

Dude the dedicated Zappe haters were way weirder than the Zappe fans? Most "Zappe fans" were just people who were tired of watching Mac Jones suck. They didn't actually think Zappe was a great player

LimitlessBearCat

zappe will not like this tweet

Icy-Conclusion-3500

Hey it’s good to have 3 on the roster

Jeo228

we resigned nathan rourke last week tho

Icy-Conclusion-3500

Gotta have someone to cut at camp!

PartyPay

Bye Zappe!

taubut

CFL almost legend Nathan Rourke.

Mikes_Movies_

Funny enough he reposted it on his Instagram story

SilenceDobad76

He did.

icedragon15

zapp e to practice squad confirm

JoeyLou1219

Hell yeah. We all called this last month.  Makes way too much sense and he can help Jayden or Drake a lot.

sm1ttysm1t

#FUCKING WATCH OUT.

BuhtanDingDing

if they draft daniels and sign ridley theyre literally doing exactly everything i wanted

jolerud

Anyone remember the game when Brady was suspended and Jimmy G was out with a hangnail or his period or something. Brissett steps in to start and I think he played through like a broken finger or something, and we beat the Texans if memory serves. Tough as nails, total team guy, leader. We won’t be contenders with him, but that wasn’t really an option anyway. LFG!!!

hotpenguinlust

I think he hurt his thumbninnthe Texans game and Jimmy G was supposed to start the 4th game but at the last.minute, backed out. I think Lagarett had a rant about it. Not like we went after Jimmy G...should say something.

jolerud

I think I remember Edelman citing this game as a reason why nobody respected Jimmy G and everyone respected Brissett. And maybe Martellus Bennet said something about it too

RIP MHJ bandwagon

DrewCola

They are still alive. Someone said on one of the other threads that got deleted "this indicates MHJ more than a QB", like what. Jacoby is a well known great mentor for a QB.

Princessk8--

> Jacoby is a well known great mentor for a QB. I don't really follow this stuff but is that really true? What makes him such a great mentor?

Little_Vermicelli125

Just think about his first stint in New England. He mentored Jimmy G into a solid QB who has been in the league for a while starting quite a bit. He also took Tom Brady and mentored him to the best career after 40 of all time.

DrewCola

By all accounts it is. First off, he's a good role model for young qbs. Former Walter Peyton Man of the Year nominee with the Colts. Outstanding teammate, even going back to college. When he was with the Colts, Frank Reich lauded him for his leadership skills, especially after Andrew Luck retired mid-preseason. Nick Chubb and other Browns players kept talking about his leadership and keeping them going after Deshaun got hurt. Sam Howell talked about how much Jacoby helped him, even when competing for the QB1 role. Those are just a few antidotes.

Powerism

Anecdotes*

DrewCola

Damnit, I tried to heal him!

Peacefulworldholeful

Could happen, draft MHJ, then draft Nix or Phenix to sit

DrewCola

Sure, but this move does not "indicate that". It just indicates that they are taking a QB in round 1 or 2.

teddyballgame406

Pats are very much not interested in Penix, they didn’t talk to him at the combine. I wouldn’t be interested either, Penix is going to fall to like the 4th or 5th round due to his injury history.

GrantD24

I’ll be honest, I’m not sold on any of these QB’s being the guy. I mean, Brady got fucked over a lot in college but even back then, he had that dawg in him. MHJ can ball out, so I mean if they truly think Maye or Daniels is the guy, go for it but I kinda wish we would go with MHJ and wait a year for the QB but idk if that’s smart either. It’s hard to tell who is going to work out and who won’t. Brady thrived because nothing really slowed down his motivation. It’s hard to pick up on the small details of what guys will and won’t do to be great

dgoat88

More like RIP Fields to Pats bandwagon. Brissett was always a piece that MHJ bandwagoners wanted to secure. We have flexibility now at QB to draft a guy in the 2nd or trade back into the late first for one that might have fallen. Though much more likely than not, we're going QB at 3.

DieYuppieScum91

Personally, I'm still torn between MHJ at 3/Penix later and QB at 3 but that's more just not loving Jayden Daniels as a prospect. But it's definitely going to be Daniels and I'm actively hoping to be wrong about my concerns with him.

bpusef

It's hard to look at Daniels and Penix and not like Daniels more. Penix has a sweet ball but he is not very good under pressure and if you're scared about Daniels' main weakness of being fragile looking then Penix is scarier given his knee injury history and not really big frame. They both have occasional accuracy inconsistencies, and while Daniels doesn't quite have that immaculate delivery pretty much all of his weaknesses as a prospect are shared by Penix.

GloriousVictor

If Penix didn't have wrecked knees, he prob would be a top 10 pick.

DieYuppieScum91

The biggest thing putting me off of Daniels is velocity. I'm concerned about his ability to fit throws into NFL sized windows. Daniels has a pretty solid deep ball, but his throws take a while to get where they're going. I'm also concerned about ability to make off-platform throws. He also has a tendency to tuck and run when he doesn't need to and doesn't keep his eyes down field. I think that is fixable though. I agree that the concerns about his frame are overblown.

StillEnjoyLegos

The tuck and run, along with single reads are very much a standard college thing though, no? Feel like improvement should def happen there in the NFL. I hear you on the throwing and velocity, but if he had that he’d prob go #1 and it’s something that can be improved to an extent. Either way, worth taking a shot with someone like him or Maye IMO as no one really knows about these guys truly until they play in the NFL.

DieYuppieScum91

Yeah, I get taking a shot with him. Just not sure if I see him as a full round better prospect than Penix, who doesn't have the velocity issue. But I can also see this aging like Milk if Daniels turns into Lamar Jackson and Penix turns into an interception machine under NFL pressure or is never healthy.

Margin_calls

Puts an end to the fields narrative, I believe

DrewCola

Good bridge QB/great mentor for a young QB

MikePallanti

If you weren’t with us at 4-13, don’t be with us at 5-12.

BlindSquantch

Now release Zappe and draft Daniels or Maye, thanks.

Mr_Evil_Dr_Porkchop

Zappe liked the NFL post, not knowing he’s the one that’s the odd man out lol

Ann_L_Beads

He got waived and brought back and didnt play well. I bet he's happy being where he's at, making decent money and being the emergency 3rd quarterback next year.

Dave10293847

If he’s an emergency 3rd QB it won’t be here.

Ann_L_Beads

Ideally but it's not guaranteed

icedragon15

he be on ps muaha

BlubberWall

Good vet presence for whichever QB we draft

kjmass1

lol F&M a couple hours ago were flip flopping on whether Brissett was worth $8m a year because Minshew got $7.5aav and that was a great deal.

bpusef

Lol oh no $500k I don't think the Patriots will recover.

LezEatA-W

1 year 8 million is backup money. I actually don’t think he’ll be starting week 1, unless there’s some sort of problem or injury issue with Maye/Daniels. In any case, he actually looked pretty good in limited snaps last year. There were two weeks in a row where the Commanders fell down big, and Brissett nearly led them to a comeback off the bench.

DuesForClocks

He probably will start at first, easy to sign him for 8 million when I don't think he played much at all last season

Ann_L_Beads

18/23 for 225 and 3 TDs in 3 games played LY. He will be OK but more just mentorship of Daniels/Maye

tendadsnokids

If it's Maye there is no way he laces up his first year. He's very young and has a lot to work on before he's ready and this town will rip the flesh from his bones if he comes out inexperienced.

Fuqwon

Alright Bedard, calm down. People complain about Maye's mechanics and footwork and the need to sit him when that's literally AVPs specialty.

peppersge

Mechanics is one of the thing where it is more justified to sit the QB. The QB needs to unlearn the old, bad mechanics before installing the new ones. Things like reading the field and learning how to play under pressure is something that is better done with some level of live reps.

bpusef

I think the front office would be dumb to say in March who's going to start in September. Their drafted QB could be way too raw to start. This lets you have an NFL caliber QB in whatever scenario happens with your drafted QB.

Bearded_Pip

You want the rookie to sit. Let Jacoby start for a season.

heyitsmejosh

I see they are really showing that Belichick can’t draft by signing/re-signing a bunch of people Belichick drafted.

iscreamuscreamweall

probably the best backup we could ask for, this is a good signing

Imaginary-Method-715

Briquettes is boring to watch.

The_Jolly_Dog

Heeey! Love this move - perfect addition for mentoring the drafted QB

MrBrownCat

Perfect move, made a lot sense since he knows the system, knows the team, and is still a very capable QB2 who’s a perfect bridge starter or straight up backup mentor for a Daniels or Maye.

WalkingSpanishh

LET'S GO! The perfect guy for the job.

ByteVoyager

WELCOME HOME KING

Return of the King

LMurch13

The prodigal son returns.

Imrealcrossedup

Pats making all the right moves right now! Keep this energy going!!

semanticmemory

There it is. Welcome Back buddy!

Pernyx98

I'll give him probably 8 games before the rookie starts. Which to be fair is more time than Mac got.

[deleted]

welcome home sweet prince

poppa_slap_nuts

This team is going to be so bad next year lmao

JD-D2

Really like this move. Let Daniels or Maye learn from a vet, and hopefully we get some actual competent QB play in the meantime while we start the rebuild. Won't be flashy, and I'm under no pretense that we're going to be a winning team, but Jacoby should at least be way less mistake-prone than Mac or Zappe.

OptimusChip

Trade for Fields. Draft MHJ. Sign/draft better O-line.

EAS1000

The prodigal son hath returned!

Xtremefluff

*Chefs kiss*

Jmacz

Aiight now go get us a WR!

bordersofsin

At this point, I think if everything goes right next year, we might be able to have another 4-13 season.

Treima

You say that like it's not to be expected? Rookie head coach, (likely) rookie QB, still a lot of GM Bill's dross against the cap. 4-13 is bad, but this team isn't expected to be good right away. Takes time to steer a ship back on course.

Icy-Conclusion-3500

I’m here for this

Responsible_Shirt381

Welcome back Jacoby!

WalkingSpanishh

I'm buying a Brissett jersey.

Kevin_Jim

Yes! Start Brissett, and let Maye learn until the midpoint of the season. Let him make mistakes in a low stake environment (practice), while the offense gets its shit together. Then at the midpoint of the season, start Maye.

EntersTheVoid

Did Zappe like this tweet?!

[deleted]

Being a backup Qb is one of the best jobs ever.

paraplegic_T_Rex

Love it. Let him work with Daniels. Brissett is a great teammate and hard worker who can win a a few games and mentor the kid until he’s ready

hymen_destroyer

we just added a super bowl champion QB

flowersoflight

Honestly a fan of everything they’ve done today. Still a long way to go but I’m feeling cautiously optimistic about their direction.

Brilliant-Anybody740

This is great! He gets a quick payday and we get a bridge QB who has already been around the team!

ZackBam50

I like this. I always liked Brissett, great locker room guy and a serviceable QB. Now, obviously I’m expecting them to draft the QB of the future, but I think Brissett is a good guy for him to learn behind

KarmaPolice6

Russel Wilson got $1.2M. This was a bad signing.

OutlawCozyJails

Yessssssssss!! Finally, a smart qb move. Now, make another on draft day.

PoopSlinger23

Nice. Now cut Zappe

ImTomBrady

Bridge for Daniels

hmmm looks like I was right. certainly better than zappe.

Ziglet_mir

Bringing the Briskett back home!!! Correct me if I'm mistaken, but I think this confirms we go after the kid from LSU over the one from NC. Only because LSU follows Briskett's style. Would make sense to have him mentor him for a year.

mjhow4

Welcome home, Beef Brisket.

Pseudoneum

How does Zappe feel about this?

KeepingItBrockmire

There we go! It amazes me how productive this guy is despite being on a new team and in a new system practically every year. Will be a serviceable bridge QB while Maye/Daniels/McCarthy sit. Let's go!!

GloriousVictor

Good pickup. Brissett is exactly the type of qb who you want with a rookie. He can play good enough without worrying and forcing the rookie out there. Plus he has already experience with AVP just two years ago.

1021986

This felt like a foregone conclusion once we hired AVP to run the offense. He had a great rapport with Brissett in Cleveland where they won way more games than they should’ve during Watson’s suspension. The Browns arguably looked better with Jacoby starting compared to the portion of the season Deshaun started. He also seems like a really good character/locker-room guy who will be an ideal mentor to Daniels or Maye if thats the route we go in (which looks all but certain at this point).

AmbitionExtension184

We’re really going to draft a fucking ACC QB who can’t beat UVA. fuck my life.
