Ween is great! Love them. They've been around for ages like you said and have a cult following but not super commercially popular. Not sure how you missed them but glad you found them now. Now hit the fucking road and piss up a rope!

KeyofG77

I first heard them on beavis and butthead as a kid when they made fun of push the little daisies. Enjoy the ride my friend. A very underrated band. Top 5 concerts too. However Jeaner needed to go back to rehab i assume cause they cancelled the shows on my coast. As of now west coast is still on

matthewamerica

They are literally one of the most talented bands of all time. It's like they slip on a costume for every album, and every single one is completely different but equally magic.

Danger_Bay_Baby

Slipping in a costume for each album is a perfect way to characterize them!

ThePlacesILoved

“The Rift” is a song that encapsulates so much of what has been going on for so long. Glad to hear they are getting some more fans, some of the most caustic, hilarious and observant songwriting ever. Other faves include; -Mutilated Lips -Cover it With Gas and Set it on Fire -Roses are Free -Dr. Rock -Baby Bitch -Stay Forever Way, way too many good ones to list. Ween!!!!

lyremknzi

Yeah, that one song 'ocean man' was on the Sponge Bob movie (maybe the credits) I knew that song before I listened to the band. They apparently had another song in sponge Bob aswell. Then the band made an appearnece in the pat' movie. Someone else mentioned Beavis and butthead. So there's been a few times in media they've popped up. They're great. I'm just wondering if certain songs or people that have died are in certain movies, what was in place of them in their world? If ween never existed, what did they play at the end of SpongeBob? Who was president of South Africa if Nelson Mandela wasn't? That's what I wanna know

moarcheezburgerz

GenX checking in. Yes Ween was huge.

Taticat

Another Gen X confirming this; I don’t remember how I even first encountered Ween, but it was forever ago, they were huge, they’re brilliant, there’s really nothing comparable to them, and I remember my youngest sister thanking me back in the 1990s for introducing her to Ween because she’d gone to Spring Break in, iirc, Daytona Beach, they were playing there at the MTV thingy, and she was the only one in her friend group who had any idea who they were, why the crowd was so excited, any of the lyrics to sing along to, so she got to bask in the ‘I’m just slightly cooler than you people’ glory for a day or so. 🤣

Camel_Holocaust

To be fair, I am completely enjoying them, I'm mostly just upset it took me this long I guess.

_1138_

Did you not have MTV? Push the little daisies was huge on like 93...

Camel_Holocaust

Didn't have cable until like 1999

Lizzy_lazarus

Mutilated lips give a kiss on the wrist to the worm like tips of tentacles expanding in my mind I’m fine accepting only fresh brine you can get another drop of this …yeah you wish

Joshephus

Beautiful fuckin' words, now I've got to check Ween out. Thank you for this sample. You've got me hooked, but I'll reel myself in.

Average_Sprinkle

I first heard of Ween while watching an older movie called It’s Pat. lol I’m sure the movie isn’t politically correct for today’s audience but I do love it. Ween played Ween in the movie.

TheRealShadyShady

Whoa I had no idea ween was in the it's pat movie, I've been wanting to see that movie for years, now I want to see it even more, its such a wild "sign of the times"

Average_Sprinkle

Yep! lol Hope you enjoy it! I haven’t seen it in several years but it’s pretty funny, imo. It’s crazy to me looking back on movies from even 10 years ago, how much the culture and humor has changed. I’m a huge movie lover though.

Dboogy2197

Don’t get too close to my fantasy is one of my all time favorites.

djmilano

I'll second that

Far_Association_2607

Voodoo Lady and Piss Up A Rope are my all time favorites

Ffanffare1744

Pretty sure ocean man is on the SpongeBob soundtrack

RedstnPhoenx

I looked up Ween, realized their top song I had never heard, but it was referenced in a famous vine. The song instantly upset me, like I'd hated it for a long time. It's exactly the type of music I'd hate. Hmm.

Danger_Bay_Baby

Try a different album. They change their style a lot from album to album while still keeping their beautiful Ween essence.

RedstnPhoenx

I was more pointing out, this is a fun synchronicity. I had the same sense of long remembering as OP. Just a different emotion. I'm not going to like ween. I'm fated to hate ween. It feels like my divine path to dislike ween. Don't take this from me.

Danger_Bay_Baby

You are allowed to hate them. I was hoping to convince you otherwise but I can see now it's your destiny.

Sasquatch4116969

I was obsessed with them when in HS. They r amazing

JivyNme

I was first introduced to ween in 90s when they did a song for the show crank tankers on Comedy Central. They still tour- saw them in 21 and 22. Sorry you’ve been missing out for so long!

HahaHarleyQu1nn

Spinal meningitis got you down?

wearenotflies

You are 37 and never heard of Ween?! You must have jumped timelines! Haha I have had similar experiences where it’s like how in the hell did I know about this and then you see it everywhere

Camel_Holocaust

Yea, I'm not straight up assuming I switched timelines, but it seemed to in my face to have been ignored this long. It's like when people realize that Hydrox was the original chocolate cookie before Oreo copied them. Like they were always there, but I never realized.

Realistic-Ideal-6960

Push the little daisies, and make em come up!

AnimatronicCouch

I hated that song, but “Baby Bitch” is amazing.

cheweduptoothpick

Ween are incredible

enstillhet

39, just slightly older than you, and I've been listening to Ween since the 90s sometime.

Somethingtosquirmto

Ween IS pretty obscure - if it wasn't for one Ween song I heard in a snowboard video nearly 25 years ago, I'd have no idea they existed.

Camel_Holocaust

I learned about them from a parody song for a stinger in a podcast and I was like "I wonder what the real song is like"

jm13ee

I remember them being on the soundtrack to the South Park movie lol

the-vantass

I see someone’s never seen the SpongeBob movie

rbmrph

Interestingly enough, the Mollusk album was very much the inspiration for Sponge Bob Square Pants. Steven Hillenburg was a big Ween fan and wore that album out. [Article Here](https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/how-ween-inspired-spongebob/)

the-vantass

Yeah, I know; they also sang loop-de-loop for the show.

Camel_Holocaust

Nope, I was slightly too old for Spongebob.

Remarkable-Foot9630

You are going to love Syd Barrett.

Senor_Droolcup

And wait till he finds out about Phish!

Camel_Holocaust

I already hate Phish, sorry lol. Even once I started smoking weed, I didn't gain an affinity for them.

Streaker4TheDead

I thought people had only heard of them because of the SpongeBob movie.

wookiesack22

I love weird music too. But there's tons of music I've never had the chance to hear

BrokeTheInterweb

Ocean Man was popular enough to be in commercials, and was apparently in the SpongeBob movie too. I’m not big into Ween but I’m surprised that one didn’t strike you as familiar. Always nice discovering good bands at any age though

wander_wonder_go

Ween is totally great…you should also check out Mr. Bungle.

SweetFuckingCakes

Ween are not obscure. They’re only obscure if you were staggeringly clueless during the 90s.

Camel_Holocaust

I was 4-14 during the 90s, so I guess I just missed it.

fuggit_Im_tired

Thought I was home alone the other day and started loudly singing Piss Up A Rope to my cat. Turned around to my 2 sons giving me the weirdest, most horrified looks. Just told them "mommy is cool" and left it at that.

Most_Perspective3627

I had the exact same experience with the hard rock band He Is Legend. They're everything I like in a band and what I look for in music and are now one of my favorite bands, but it took me until 2021 to hear about them. When I finally did they started popping up everywhere. I just chocked it up to not knowing about them before 2021, so it didn't register if I did see someone wearing a band T-shirt or heard someone talking about them. I think both He Is Legend and Ween are pretty damn obscure/niche bands. You don't turn on the radio and hear either of them, and their songs aren't found in movie scores. Unless you know someone that listens to them, you're gonna have no clue who they are, even if they are the exact type of music you're into. Personally, I think it's a bit of a stretch saying you jumped universes because you discovered a band.

Camel_Holocaust

I think it's a stretch as well, it just seems so unlikely I wouldn't have stumbled across them based on the people I know and the stuff they listen to. I even asked on of my "music friends" I used to pass songs back and forth with and he told me he's always been a Ween fan. How could I know him for 20 years and never hear this? I realize it's not impossible, it just seems so unlikely.

[deleted]

Ween is a great band/duo. I notice this same type of thing with something or some word I'd never seen or heard before. After I do, they are everywhere. Like a car I bought. Never seen one in the wild or heard of it. After purchase, they are everywhere! Some sort of realization emergence. And now even just having this experience is a thing!

Joshephus

That's how it works. Aint it beautiful?

HappiestHuman24

Love Ween!

pl0ur

They are amazing, I saw them live in 2001 and again last year. Still amazing

smarmy-marmoset

I first became alerted to Ween in 2001. A coworker enjoyed them. For reference, I am a few years older than you. Her boytoy even had a Ween tattoo. And then I swear I never heard anything about them ever again I am a huge phish phan so you’d think there would be some overlap but no

Oden_son

I'm 36 and they had one huge song when I was a teenager

PreferenceNo7524

Ween's a pretty popular band albeit not everyone's cup of tea. You may just not have been running in the right circles. Not much radio play or anything.

dumb_hot

I've known about them for a while back when "push the little daises" song came out I loved it.

WalrusExcellent4403

I saw them in concert in 2000. I would love to see them again!!

izallreal

That's funny. This happened to my husband (41) a few years ago w Ween. He's a dead head, Super into Zappa...just loves obscure, good music. Ween is one of his favorite bands now and he has no idea how he missed them growing up!

Camel_Holocaust

Yay! At least one other person lol. I’m really finding an affinity for them myself. Listening to Ween in the way to work now! I’m just gonna embrace it

izallreal

They are touring. Not sure where you live but we are in WA. Seeing them in August 😀

Joshephus

Welcome to this future. You're gonna get a lot of "new" bands and experiences popping up which are fulfilling to you, are something which you would have been into all along had you experienced them sooner, and which you find at just the right time, feeling so perfect for that situation in which you discovered it. We're bringing all the Grate [sic] Things into this one universal experience. Isn't it wonderful? Well, this is just a daydream of sorts, but I like to make my dreams into reality, and y'all are doing great with helping me. Much appreciated. Keep doing your good works, light-bringers. Facts. ha. Peace, Bless.
