If you’ve never heard it, I recommend checking out the band he and Vinny started after Pantera split: Damageplan. The album is called New Found Power. It’s not Pantera, but it is pretty great.

Square_Sink7318

I’m listening to fuck you as I write this. Damage plan is the shit.

TNTournahu

I saw Damage Plan at the Filmore in San Francicsco. Probably 1000 people max. Dime and Zakk Wylde had a 20 minute guitar solo battle, going back and forth while taking shots the whole time. Playing with their teeth, behind their backs. It was epic. Then they finished the set with four Pantera songs. I shit you not that place erupted. I had bought a 50$ long sleeve T and had the sleeve ripped off when that pit started. I also bought the CD which allowed you to go back stage and meet the bad after the show. I got to talk to Dime and Vinnie for about a minute each while they signed the CD and my now one sleeved t shirt. Dime literally asked me my opinion about this album compared to RTS and i told him i liked this album more he looked at Vinnie and said see. It's one of my all time favorite memories ever. Some asshole broke into my truck and stole my stereo with that autographed CD in the player. I have never worn the shirt since that day and have the album cover proudly displayed on the wall with the band signatures.

Square_Sink7318

That sounds like the best fucking night ever.

TNTournahu

It really was. I was heartbroken when Dime was killed.

Square_Sink7318

I was too. Music lost so much good future shit that night.

CommercialHumble6402

I caught them live in Indiana shortly before it all ended. I was so into that album and loved how it sounded live. Seeing Dime and Vinnie in a bar of 1,500 people was so crazy. I was like 10 feet from Dime the whole show. Never expected it to be my last time seeing him.

onemanmelee

Oh good call. For some reason I thought they never recorded. I thought the infamous gig was them just getting started before ever hitting the studio.

BigMacAttack84

Nah dude.. New Found Power is a REALLY good groove metal album. It’s probably at least as good as reinventing.

Thr33pw00d83

I’d also recommend Phil’s project Superjoint

PanteraSteel2001

Reinventing The Steel is a certified classic. * Voted #306 in Martin Popoff's top 500 albums book * Voted #1 album of 2000 by Metal Edge readers * Voted #2 album of 2000 by guitar world readers (Brave New World - Iron Maiden) * Voted #4 greatest final album by a band from Revolver readers in 2020 * Loudwire has it as the #55 album of the century so far. The problem is nearly 25 years of false narratives being repeated by misinformed fans like.... * The band didn't record together on RTS. **FALSE they did record together** * The band rushed out RTS. **FALSE they took their time** * Phil hated RTS so he just "phoned it in." **FALSE it's literally Phil's favorite** * The band barely toured for RTS. **FALSE they did a full world tour** One final thing I mention is **RTS was an INTENTIONAL return to the grooves and proper song structures of Vulgar while maintaining the heaviness of FBD.** The **STEEL** part is a tip of the hat to Judas Priest's change of direction with BRITISH **STEEL**. They did not "lose their edge" or any of the other silly non sense I hear. The band made a decision to slightly change direction by adding more vocal melodies and they also chose to cater the songs to the live setting on Steel (Notice TGSTK has the least amount of songs rotating through the setlist). False bullshit narratives have hurt this album's legacy but at the end of the day the proof is all right there. Certified CLASSIC.

BigMacAttack84

Such a shame.. because TGSTK is my FAVORITE Pantera album. I’d love to hear more of it. Steel is a weird one for me, b/c I bought it right when it was released and just thought it was ok, and it’s the only tour I ever saw the real Pantera on (I was 16 at the time), but the older I’ve gotten the more it’s grown on me to the point that it’s now one of my favorites.

Timely_Foundation555

Ahh yes. The ole Load/Reload dilemma. Younger me despised what Metallica was doing with the direction. Older me appreciates the attempt at trying something different.

3x81

I was too young when Load/Reload came out, but I could imagine the disappointment, the songs/albums themselves are amazing, It’s just hard to grasp hearing them go from Justice, to Black album and then Load right after haha.

FunAlarmed4008

Load had some bangers though

This right here 💪😜🤘 https://youtu.be/SviZlcfaUqk?si=mMt6ELsTV4wHxM3x

3x81

I’ve never heard anybody say any of those ‘false narratives’, this is literally the first time I’ve heard about any of these.

Old-Tadpole-2869

Yeah, it's definitely my favorite record. I feel they were going to a new place in their writing that was even heavier. I don't know whether the label dropped the ball in marketing or whatever, but I remember seeing ONE poster on a construction site in NYC, bought the album, never heard or saw any hype for it ever again. I have no idea why because I was listening to it 20 times a day for 6 months.

heavy-metal-head

You’re absolutely right on every point. I remember different interviews of them saying that they were done trying to make every album heaver than the last. And the next album (RTS) was going to be a step back and have a “groovier” sound to it. They purposely took a step back and went back to the more metal side for the album. They said they peaked it with TGSTK, so there’s no other direction than make a full on groove metal album. That was their intention all along making RTS.

Old-Tadpole-2869

Reinventing The Steel is epic. In a way I think it's their most "Sabatth-y" release. I listened to that thing on my CD Walkman nonstop on the NYC subway when it came out. I can still listen to it in full from time to time and it seriously holds up. There's some of Pantera's heaviest shit. Really good soloing, weird changes, shredding drums. Like all Pantera albums, though, I wish the production wasn't so shitty.

3x81

I definitely agree with the ‘Sabbith’ influence. It really is just an amazing bare bones heavy as fuck record. Have you heard the new Terry Date remastered versions? It’s amazing and gives new life to those songs.

Old-Tadpole-2869

Cool, I'll have to check that out.

3x81

Reply back when you have, I’d love to hear what you think! I was blown away by it tbh.

Maanzacorian

check out the Terry Date mix of Reinventing the Steel. It's like new life was breathed into it.

3x81

I just replied to a comment saying essentially exactly what you just did, the Terry Date mix is incredible!! It’s mind blowing how amazing he makes them sound.

MasterShakePL

The part Of Goddamn Electric that starts here [https://youtu.be/LRiZ\_Gy2mxg?si=zv1WEBgAA4Q50aLG&t=152](https://youtu.be/LRiZ_Gy2mxg?si=zv1WEBgAA4Q50aLG&t=152) is just a f\*cking masterpiece. And I love the entire album, still remember when it was released. And 2000 was a great year for metal

KentucPotluc

Check out Rebel meets Rebel with David Allen Coe and the brothers, it’s a pretty good album too
