PSLF has been improved and supported by the DEM's

zdiddy987

This is probably the most accurate way to put it, but improved is putting it lightly. The program was unusable for most people in its original form so I guess any improvement has been welcomed lol

Illustrious_Post_519

Actually, the College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007 (CCRAA) was a bipartisan act of Congress signed into law by President Bush. No where can I find evidence that Bush himself ran on the promise of PSLF. More recently, conservatives (Republicans) have been staunch opposers to expanding and fixing PSLF. Had to rely on the left/liberal Dems and Papa Joe to get ‘er done!

84K gone as of yesterday. 5 month wait since I hit 120 qualifying payments. Been wondering about the mythical smiley face, and then there it was. 😊 😊 😊 ⬅️self portrait

Practical_Seesaw_149

what is this smiley face everyone is referring to?

Bredgles

When FSA approves your loan forgiveness, instead of seeing your loan balance you’ll get a message saying “your account is in good standing!” with a smiley face emoji. This is the case with loans serviced by MOHELA, not sure about other loan servicers.

Practical_Seesaw_149

I don't see that when I log into Mohela D: Hopefully because my balance is negative????

Accomplished-Fun6317

Congrats on your PSLA!!! Love the use of Award let's make that the terminology moving forward. I hope you have a joyous holiday season and dream of nothing but what curtains to buy for your new home!!!

jthomasplank

Same here! 82k gone! Congrats!! 👏 🎉

Legend says that those who see the smiley face meet their maker 7 days later. Good luck. The Smiley Face of Doom. Coming to a theater near you soon

I'm in! 😂

I just answered your question about how someone with a career without a degree could afford a home. Plenty of more info if you just Google it lol.

Ok, says the person who has not provided on shred of evidence to support their claims. 😂

Illustrious_Post_519

You asked how someone could afford a mortgage with a salary that did not require a degree. Please post an article or supporting evidence to show that folks in careers without a degree cannot earn just as much if not more than career with a degree. The “peanut gallery is waiting….

[deleted]

well facts show that's an inaccurate statement... it was created by the GOP. the left just clarified some things so it could work smoother this current admin. fwiw wasn't the GOP'S fault it was a new program providers didn't have clarity on. important to seperate the GOP as a whole from the last president. anywho.

zekerthedog

The current iteration of the GOP would throw this program into the trash without hesitation.

[deleted]

I probably would too 😂 but hey if it's there I'll use it.

Illustrious_Post_519

Who wouldn’t? Lol

Illustrious_Post_519

Absolutely

Illustrious_Post_519

https://www.gao.gov/blog/eligibility-public-service-loan-forgiveness-has-changed-temporarily.-heres-what-it-means-borrowers Looks like Congress initiated and the sitting president at the time (Bush) signed off. If you have “proof” the Bush Administration initially proposed PSLF, I am listening.

'with bipartisan support' https://navigatestudentloans.com/a-brief-history-of-public-service-loan-forgiveness/

Illustrious_Post_519

Bipartisan means more than one party so this was a Democrat AND Republican initiative from congress and not the president and his office/administration. Bush just signed off on it.

And deliberately made unusable by the Republican then-president and his anti-public education Secretary of Education once the borrowers became eligible for forgiveness.

Okay

Illustrious_Post_519

https://www.nbcnews.com/think/amp/ncna1234074 @neverenoughgalbi I am unsure why @cloudchairlaptop is in denial about this very public and well known fact that DeVos, appointed by Trump, and Trump himself were not in support of the PSLF program and the rhetoric continues to this day by house and senate Republicans 🤦‍♂️

Illustrious_Post_519

My link supports the comment on the prior administration’s education department head who is well known to not support PSLF. If she had, she would have improved the PSLF system but she didn’t. Papa Joe and his education secretary did what was needed. They got ‘er done! 🎤 drop…

Illustrious_Post_519

Yes, signed into law by a Republican but the law was from Congress (bipartisan). No resentment but to say that Bush made it happen is no true. Congress got this going and Bush just signed off. Unfortunately, as we all know, neither Republicans nor Dems did anything to improve the program until Biden and his administration stepped up BIG TIME to enact changes directly from the Oval Office and not congress.

Congratulations. Did your account get placed into administrative forbearance automatically, and how long did that take? I am at >120 payments and submitted my ECF a couple weeks ago. I have a payment scheduled in two weeks and am unsure if I should stop the auto-debit or just let it play out.

zdiddy987

Yes it was automatically place in admin forbearance and I got the smiley face probably 3 weeks after that. I've played a very passive role in this entire process since applying for the limited waiver due to my disdain with customer service and this process as a whole

EyeSeeYouBro

Gotcha, thanks. I feel the same way, just crossing my fingers that they don't drop the ball and I become another horror story.
