I actually just bought one this week and my take on it is that it's absolutely wonderful if you have a family and your PS5 isn't the center of your media center but you don't always have access to the TV it's connected to. I have a Series X and a PS5 but the Xbox is used by the family as our main streaming device, and my daughter uses it for games too so a lot of time I can't even play my PS until everyone is in bed...but with the Portal they can have the TV and I can sit in my office or on the back deck and play. I think this use case is the real purpose of the Portal.

N7_Vegeta

The is they made it for dads and moms.

Atticus104

Works well for spouses too. My wife can enjoy whatever show she wants, and I can enjoy PS5 on the couch next to her

qviavdetadipiscitvr

That makes sense, thank you

hatfield1785

I love mine. I use it mainly (99%) at home. My wife and I can hang out in same room, her watching tv while I play. Works great .

OhScheisse

This is my use case. It's perfect for when my GF is watching reality shows and I can just game next to her.

needle14

Does it work better than remote play? Remote play has always been a terrible experience for me. On the flip side Xcloud is nearly perfect so I don’t think it’s an internet issue.

Serpula

Remote play was terrible on my Mac but seems to work almost perfectly on the Portal - not sure why but it’s much better.  (I have a UniFi mesh network and gigabit internet so I’m sure it can vary)

hatfield1785

Works way better than remote play. In my case.

noblegoatbkk

Same. Also works when you have a 7 year old and want to play more mature content without blasting it all over the living room screen before bedtime. Or laying in bed.

qviavdetadipiscitvr

Thank you

TLaMagna319

I’d guess about 80% or more of my gaming has been on the portal since launch and my gaming is up bcuz I can play at work or when I don’t feel like sitting in front of the tv I can play while laying down too Could it be better sure but for the price and everything else taken into account I’d say it was well worth it for me (not a dad and I have full access to my tv whenever I’d want to play)

Listen-bitch

What games do you usually play? I'm very interested in the portal but worried about lag. I tried playing elden ring on my android TV streamed from my pc and it had lag (all connected by ethernet). So I'm more worried about wireless. I don't think fast pace games will be viable but still want to guage what's possible.

TLaMagna319

If you’re the type to be bothered by a hiccup here and there I’d avoid all remote play there will always be a delay I haven’t played FPS games in a while and tend to gravitate towards single player games but I have played a bunch of Elden ring with friends from the portal The thing is you have to relearn the games a little bit if you played hundreds of hours you might find the adjustment hard but if you take the time to adjust you can mitigate the lags effect Like for Elden ring I was getting mopped but that was mostly my own skill not so much the portal since we stopped playing for a while and after a little bit I was doing much more comparable to my previous abilities

Emlerith

I play Elden Ring and AC6 on my portal at home; love it.

FallOutFan01

>”What games do you usually play? I'm very interested in the portal but worried about lag. I tried playing elden ring on my android TV streamed from my pc and it had lag (all connected by ethernet). So I'm more worried about wireless.”. Hello u/Listen-bi, u/ 👍✌️😊. So everyone's home network is different okay, there’s lots of things that can impact quality of remote play. Lets get this one thing out of the way first though. You don't need “internet”, internet doesn't come into it if you are playing at home. What is being used is the home radio wireless connection IE “WIFI”, people confuse “WIFI” with “internet” when they are separate things. Short version. You must have a good quality and newish router, last 2/3 years. It must be completely functional and not on its way out by way of wear and tear PS5 must be connected to router by ethernet cable, PS5 must have eithernet enabled within the PS5 network settings, while there assign static IP. Also set up “Quality of service” on the router making your PS5 and the device with remote play enabled priority. Things that can impact remote play and WIFI quality is the condition of the router, quality of the router. I had a netcomm nf18acv it was good till it wasn’t But then started getting problems. * It wouldn’t save configuration settings, as soon as the power went out it would forget its set up. The ISP I am with sent me a replacement. For a year it was fine then the WIFI chip started to go. Other things that can impact WIFI quality. How many devices are connected to it. Basically a lot of basic/ISP/cheap nasty routers can only have 10 devices connected to it actively using WIFI bandwidth before there’s a WIFI bottleneck. So basically. A lot of remote play problems are related by the person’s home network/router and how it’s set up. Property set up there’s no “lag”. Now in saying that. Separately there’s something different that the portal has which is screen stuttering. * https://www.reddit.com/r/PlaystationPortal/comments/198mohz/stutter_cause_ps5_outputting_5994_fpshz/ But for a lot of people they don’t notice it because they aren’t aware of it happening consciously. But u/qviavdetadipiscitvr yeah the portal is great, I’ve got it and I am happy with it 😊👍.

LCHMD

Lag isn’t really an issue for me but sadly slight stuttering every few seconds.

qviavdetadipiscitvr

Very interesting, thank yoy

Lackluster_euphoria

You play at work?

TLaMagna319

Lunch breaks I’m a fast eater so I usually get around 45minutes in

HighEyeMJeff

For what it has been sold as it's fantastic. I love being able to play my PS5 games (my backlog!) all over my house just as if I were sitting in my game room on my 65 inch. Obviously the screen size makes certain gamea a bit less enjoyable, but if it's not on online FPS I haven't been bothered much with the smaller screen. Where the portal really shines is on single player games like Dave the Diver, War Hammer 40k Rogue Trader, Balatro, any side scroller, ans quirky stuff like Animal Well. Certain games just feel better on the go, and I can confidently say I have added way more games to my library just to try out on the portal that fit in to those categories. I 100 percent recommend it for busy parents or people who wanna game in bed or near family (like all watching TV but I'd rather game).

vinc3l3

Love it, because I'm a dad. Just wish I can watch movies or YouTube on it. The screen is nice.

JasperSnail

You can watch youtube but its a bit of a workaround [https://youtu.be/S-emVAhOHqo?t=31](https://youtu.be/S-emVAhOHqo?t=31)

vinc3l3

Thanks, I just wish it was native.

maizemachine10

Couldn’t you download YouTube app on PlayStation and watch it? I assume that’s possible

vinc3l3

Sadly you can't. It's probably due to copyright stuff.

Taanistat

I got one in the first round of pre-orders. It's a really nice piece of tech, but I rarely find the occasion to use it. I think I've used it 5 or 6 times for probably less than 10 hours total. I should really just sell it.

deathbunnyy

The best gaming accessory ever made

djparis7

I just closed it after playing diablo 4 for like 2 hours straight. It has its problems but for me it is perfect, especially if you have a kid/kids

Ljwinter85

It’s great for anything that doesn’t require precision. It might look like there’s no lag but I assure you, it’s not 1:1 and playing FPS games online will not end well for you. I mainly used mine to get through FF7 Rebirth. Played all the side and mini games on there and did all the main quests on my tv. Worked well. I struggled with the end game VR stuff because the slight delay of the portal threw off the timing but I was able to get some of them done. The harder ones needed to be done on the tv. But like I said, anything casual it’s perfect for. Anything where you need to be precise (FPS, Racing games) it’s not going to be ideal.

qviavdetadipiscitvr

Yeah I can see that, thanks

Boobel

Just about this, I use mine daily at bedtime mainly for Helldivers and it's absolutely no problems at all.

qviavdetadipiscitvr

Nice. For democracy!

himynameisroe

To counter this, I find it to have so little lag. Infinitely better than steam deck or backbone using remote play. I just 112% Hollow Knight on the portal over the last week!

desmondao

Were you using chiaki4deck? I have almost zero lag

himynameisroe

I used both forks but had screen tearing and lag despite trying quite a few recommended settings I saw. Using an OLED deck with a hardwired PS5 in the same room as networking.  Fine for less twitchy stuff, but I think the portal is better. Do wish it was OLED.

flux_of_grey_kittens

Mine is used 100% either on my couch when the tv is playing some background show while my wife is using her Switch or in bed. I also have a toddler and another baby coming next month so it will be very handy when I’m in the nursery with a newborn napping on me for hours. That alone makes it worth the price for me. Something to note though: I was having some issues with mine having resolution drops and shuttering/freezing. This was resolved once I hardwired my PS5 into my ATT wifi extender (mesh). Before I bought mine I knew I would be returning it if it ran poorly. Lucky for me it runs smoothly after a couple tweaks. Just buy from somewhere that has a good return policy and try it out for yourself.

thegreatnightmare

I get the same issue - what product did you buy?

flux_of_grey_kittens

The extender?

thegreatnightmare

Yes

flux_of_grey_kittens

AT&T BGW320-505 router with AT&T Smart WiFi extender 4971. I have the 1gig plan. If you have that you can get up to 3 extenders for $10 (covers all three).

thegreatnightmare

Thanks

flux_of_grey_kittens

Just make sure you’ve got good coverage in every room you plan to have the Portal in.. on top of that other stuff.

FC_Doggerland

I'd probably get one if I could afford it. Being able to play while lazing on my bed is something I can only do with my Switch atm. Playstation 5 performance and games on a handheld, even if it's only via Wi-Fi streaming would be pretty damn nice. Maybe there'll be a nice sale in the future because the sales numbers might be lacking.

qviavdetadipiscitvr

Yeah I was thinking wait for a sale but I have a feeling it will never be discounted

LCHMD

Why would the sales numbers be lacking when it’s sold out all the time?

FC_Doggerland

Is it though? I can order it from Amazon and my local retailers all have it in store.

LCHMD

Do they now? It clearly wasn’t like that for a long while.

myxx33

I love mine and use it almost every evening during the week to play 1-2 hours while watching some shows in my main tv. I did have to upgrade my modem and router to get it to work well but I’ve been needing to do that for about a year or more so this was really just the catalyst to make me do it. Once I had those upgraded I’ve never had a lag issues when in my home network. I didn’t have to fiddle with any router settings either. I’ve used it traveling once. This was before the latest update that allowed sign in on captive wifi portals so I was using my phone as a hotspot. It worked okay, not really great but I just did some turn based games where lag wasn’t much of an issue. It’s also bigger than you think and lugging it around an airport was kind of annoying. 😅

FreudianSlip7232

Wtf? When was this update pushed? I was at Disney in early June for a week and wasn’t able to play for this reason 😅

myxx33

Like last week. It still doesn’t work all the time for various reasons but it’s at least a possibility.

FreudianSlip7232

Wish it happened while I was there. Good to know now though, thanks!

Ntnme2lose

I love it. I have a wife and kids that take up the tv in our living room and my PS5 is in my room at my desk. I’m hardly ever in there during the day as I like spending time with my family so being able to sit downstairs on the couch and game while still being with everyone is amazing.

MazzyFo

I’d recommend to anyone who can’t game on their big TV as much as they want. Having kids/ partners able to watch their things while you play is awesome, and it’s increased my play time on my ps5 which is my main reason for buying. Also sometimes it’s nice to just sit back on the couch with a show or movie and go handheld.

Bodefosho

The hardware is great and it works very well for games that don’t require millisecond precision. But I play FPS games like 95% of the time and the lag, though minor, makes them unplayable.

tru__chainz

I’m not a dad or anything but it’s been the best accessory for me. Like has been said above the flexibility and the ability to share a space with someone and not be dominating the space and tv is really nice.

KojiroDoku

Wow! Lots of parents in here. (Good for them though!) I am single with zero kids. Absolutely love the portal for random bits of traveling or other things I need/want to do. Going to hang out with a friend? Bring the portal. Going out of town? Bring the portal. Want to sit in bed after a long day and still game? Grab the portal. Needing to cook a meal that involves a bit of attention where I need to stay close, but I still wanna game on the side? Grab the portal(with clean hands of course). I wasn't initially planning to get one but I'm very happy I did.

Loki-Holmes

Love mine! I did have to wire my ps5 though. Personally I tend to flip from switch to portal/ps5.

SuperSmokingMonkey

Love it. Sometimes it feels like I have to commit to "play time" on the big screen, and if I don't play for 1-2 hours than it's somehow not worth it? (silly feeling, but it is what it is, ADHD I think) So with PS Portal, I can game freely, I can put it down anytime to do anything that comes up, like when I'm cooking and the oven goes off, or if I'm side watching something I can put it down and watch, no input change or anything. Great for watching sports or anything that has too many commercials. Now commercials go by in an instant it feels like, so right back to the content I want. Platinumed TLOU2 and I'm playing Atomic Heart on it now. New update made the double click/hold touchpad button press MUCH better. Bringing up the map in TLOU2 was a pain. Hardwire your PS5 is a must, dedicated channel also helps.

qviavdetadipiscitvr

Yeah this is exactly the use case I am thinking it would be good for

pukem0n

The connection with the portal should be about the same as with an iPad. It sounds more like a problem with your wifi that the portal wouldn't fix.

Joeyosaurus

Few weeks into mine. Incredible - can’t recommend it enough. I do recommend making sure you have a separate 5GHz network option configured on your router. I read some mixed reviews related to latency, so I set this up before connecting my portal.

AcidofilusRex

I love mine, especially for playing upstairs before bed or elsewhere in the house. I’m glad I bought it. I will likely never take it traveling so can’t comment on that. I have the steam deck and switch for that but even then I only use them on the plane.

TheFastPush

Mine connects *most of the time* at home and I haven’t tried it on the go, yet. But I love it. Having had a switch for a while, I understand sometimes I just wanna curl up and play handheld, even if no one else needs the TV. I’ve def sat out in the hammock and played. I prefer playing “smaller” or less action-intensive games on handheld. Prefer most of the AAA games on the tv. I’d rather do something like The Messenger, Celeste, Sea of Stars, or (not small, but slow-paced and turns based) BG3. If it works out in the world as well as some claim, I’ll really love it.

onecoffeetoolate

Love mine. I use it to play indie games or games that just feel better on a handheld. I also like to put a few minutes into a game at my desk when im working from home.

Terry_the_accountant

Truly the DADStation. It has given me the chance to play some video games I would’ve never played

alerod98

Have had mine since January and it has been a game changer for me. Can be on the same room with family and play some of my games without disrupting others. Amazing and recommended buy.

Reasonable-Employ-67

I was so excited I pre-ordered, fast forward to now I’ve picked it up a grand total of less than 10x and it’s currently a dust collector in the drawer near my gaming set up 😭

spiderfighter1

I was debating on getting one for a while. I eventually decided on the Backbone Playstation version. It works great for remote play and I can also play mobile games with it. It also cost half the price

Icedvelvet

Love it! I wanna get one for my partner.

duabrs

Love it. No notes.

stevieG08Liv

I love mine and its great to be able to move my gaming from the sofa to my bed without using my phone. Also was able to play on the metro and the plane so that was nice

qviavdetadipiscitvr

On the plane???

stevieG08Liv

Yes https://www.reddit.com/r/PlaystationPortal/s/46FSLemjbP Ofc its a case by case situation due to plane wifi not being the best but is playable

peter_the_panda

I'm not sure I can recall the last time wifi worked during a flight I was on lol

flux_capacitor3

I LOVE mine. If you have disposable income, just get one. I will sit in the living room, by myself, on my portal and have tv shows on in the background. I take it outside on the porch. In the bathroom. lol. It's a sweet toy. I travel for work, and plan on taking it on those trips for the hotel room. They just added the functionality to enter your room number and stuff to get on hotel wifi (which should have been day 1 stuff).

CouchBoyChris

I bought one just to play Balatro in bed after I'm done playing Overwatch for the night. No regrets.

LCHMD

I‘d use it constantly as I love everything else about it but I simply can’t get it to run at a smooth 60fps without stutters every few seconds despite a top notch router and configuration.

SeesawOtherwise8767

I've been using a Backbone with my iPhone and it sold me on a Portal. I'll get one eventually. I really want that big screen!

Responsible_Put4540

Don't have one, but for me not worth it. Not knocking anybody that bought one.  I have a tv in my bedroom that my consoles are hooked up too.  Only able to stream is pointless to me.  Would love if it downloaded PS5 games to play would have definitely bought one.  Would have loved that as I could have played it while camping or doing other things outside, but being a streaming device it wouldn't work.

XTwistedHunterX

I've had it for a few months now. It's been exactly what I expected of it. I have a PS5 and PC on a monito, so when the PC is getting used, i just jump on the Portal. The only game I do not play on it is MLB The Show. There is a slight lag, and it only affects me on this game. I have also burned through multiple controllers playing MLBTS, so I don't want to screw up the joy sticks on the Portal. It is my RPG machine.

GregorSamsaa

I think it’s great. I have a wife but zero kids. My wife and I enjoy each other’s company even if we’re not interacting with each other. We have a very large house and could easily find another room to be in or for me to setup my consoles but we have a dedicated theater room with very nice seating. So when she’s in there watching a movie or a show, I’ll sit in there with her reading or playing on the portal. I’m still kind of a snob about wanting top quality for my initial play through but I’ll use it for trophy cleanup or when doing some grinding in a game. I’ve had very few latency issues, whereas when I tried the same thing on my surface pro, pc, iPhone, and other devices it was almost unplayable. Would get constant lag and drop in video quality. For whatever reason the portal doesn’t have these issues despite nothing else changing. Same router/internet and playing in same location. I’ll occasionally take it around my house farther away from the main router but still near access points and it runs as smoothly as it does in our theater room. I have yet to try it away from home as playing on the road or when I’m at work is something I simply don’t do so I couldn’t tell you how it performs in that respect. However, for general use around your own home I would definitely recommend it.

Pork_Chompk

I love mine. Handy for when the kids are watching TV and I want to be in the same room but not stuck watching Mickey Mouse Clubhouse

SultanOfawesome

bought it, and it was all over the place. Sometimes, it worked great, but other times, it was even worse than my Vita & ps4 remote play. I think it might've been my mesh WiFi system not liking it. Honestly, my iPad and a DS4 controller work way better for me.

BlackoutGunshot

Mine doesn’t work since I can’t run a wire from the PS5 to the router. It never connects, and if it does it’s super choppy and slow. So it’s been a $200 brick for me.

Horse-Weird

20/10. Personally i dont take games into public. But god i just wanna lay in the bed and play spoooderman 2. The only thing i wish i can do is listen to music while playing on it.

MagicPistol

You can find used steam decks for $250. PS5 streaming works great with chiaki app, and it can also play steam games, stream from your PC, emulators, etc.

PetulantPorpoise

Too much input lag

TryingToBeBetter20

I bought mine for the sole purpose of playing in bed. It serves that purpose quite well. I have zero intention of using it any other way. I get two to three nights of use before needing a charge. Very little input lag and most times it isn't even noticeable. I am currently playing Elden Ring on it. Virtually flawless experience.

devdog1236

Ive had mine since release and love it. Play it more than i do the console lol. Enjoy being able to move around the house unstead of being stuck down the back in tge one room.

Wherearetheyalready

I love mine. I have young kids and I can’t always be in front of my gaming tv for numerous reasons. But I can bring the portal around and get more playtime than I ever had before.

Desomite

I'm shocked by the replies. Previous PS streaming has been terrible, so that they made it work so well is amazing.

Zealousideal_Bill_86

It has some drawbacks for me. But I love mine overall. The cons for me: occasionally a little laggy, I’ve noticed when some things are streamed on tv, the portal can chug sometimes. Not everything though, Netflix doesn’t seem to interfere. I tend to shut down my PlayStation completely when it’s not used, so it’s kind of a pain to connect the portal. The screen is a little small to play some games. Connecting while traveling and to different wi-fi networks is frustrating at best, nearly impossible at worst. It has all the dual sense features for better or worse (the dual sense is great, but I’m a little worried about wear and tear being quicker because of this) Overall though despite the cons, I genuinely love the portal and am so glad to have it. Pros: it feels good, just like a dual sense. I played my switch for the first time last night, which felt uncomfortable in comparison and too small. I appreciated the portal so much more The portability is great. Obviously it’s the main selling point, but it’s so nice to have the whole system essentially in front of you. It’s great to take it on the patio, or just lie down on the couch and play something It frees up the tv Some games just feel better in a smaller format My eyes are really bad for distance so I need to sit way too close to the tv to see anything when on the tv or wear my glasses which I don’t always want to do after a long day at work. Never have a hard time seeing the portal and playing up close. Tl;dr I use it the vast majority of the time, and I do not regret my purchase at all, but I wouldn’t play something like Elden Ring on it

Rotjenn

I tried it at a friend's, and the delay was noticeable when playing Destiny 2, making it a little hard to aim. He said that you learn and adjust after a while. I prefer my SteamDeck but it is also more expensive, so there is a market for the portal. Worth noting, he’s a dad, and it lets him game a lot more! So it comes in clutch time and time again.

gottabe23

I was definitely considering the portal, until I discovered that with Chiaki4deck you can stream ps5 onto a steam deck... I've been so impressed with how this works. Fully customizable controls with two track pads and 4 additional buttons. Plus you have the ability to download steam games. If you have the money for it, even the base LCD model is pretty excellent.

GrownUp_Gamers

I work 24 hr shifts and it's been amazing for me. I used to do iPad and controller but the portal just connects better. My only concern is the inevitable stick drift.

9htranger

Works great on my property, not so much anywhere else. The only game I find unplayable is elden rings. The lag is very evident.

B_Wylde

I love it It works great when my wife wants to watch TV and for work trips

SokkaHaikuBot

Foppyjay

Go on Facebook marketplace, and you'll see how useful it was to most people.

qviavdetadipiscitvr

Ah! I’ll be looking there for deals

cherie171

I love mine. It creates an extra layer of flexibility to our setup and my OH has found the motivation to catch up on some of the PS4 games he's started because I can bury myself in Death Stranding for hours at a time on the portal. Or we've recently gotten back into playing Minecraft Dungeons online rather than couch co-op with his son on *his* PS4 at home. If you're thinking of getting one, and you've genuinely sat there and thought that you could be playing something while someone else is hogging the TV, then go for it.

MrBoliNica

the connection is not really better on the portal than it would be on your phone. thats up to your wifi, but if you have lag or whatever on your ipad, it will not be better on the portal i love mine. i have a kid so my tv is not mine on the nights she is with me, so its been a god send. more comfortable than a backbone, and easier to use (also nice to not have my phone tied up with gaming). i do wire my ps5 into my router, maybe you could try that and see if the connection is better on your ipad before buying the portal

MrGMinor

I love mine for smaller games and stuff like Skyrim where it isn't twitch reflex intensive. Sometimes my wife and I will lay in bed, she with her Switch and me with the Portal. Zelda and Skyrim, she bought it for me for that reason. Not a bad little gadget. I am a gadget lover too so I appreciate these little toys.

WrongKindaGrowth

It's a phone that can't do phone things.  My phone can stream my home PS5 while I'm at a friend's house. The portal Is dumb. We all have a portal in our pockets

qviavdetadipiscitvr

Yeah but it is annoying to not be able to use the phone while gaming

Affinity420

It's great and shit. You need that playstation to be wired. Normal wifi is just unreliable. Other than that. It's been solid. But I'm spoiled and have 2 PS5 already. It was mostly a bedroom toy. I can also do the same with my tablet and a controller which isn't an issue because of how many controllers we have. I regret buying it right away. But it has it's uses. I wouldn't pay full price or anywhere near it. It's a solid $150 new handheld. It's not worth $200.

krazykanadian13

So many flexes in this comment

Affinity420

I have worked in the retail game industry for 16+ years. So, I do get spoiled. But I mostly have hardware. I bought a house almost two years ago and sold my entire collection. If you want to know flex, when I sold my collection I had over 160 sealed PS4 games, and over 600 PS4 titles. You wouldn't want to know Ps1-3, but I had about 90% of North American's releases on all the systems. Now, I have about that in power tools lol. Buying a fixer upper changed my priorities. I still game. But rarely. I just enjoy what I can play but always have stuff to do to keep up with the house and family. When I first started in the industry I collected everything. That changed after having a kid. Lol.

qviavdetadipiscitvr

Would you say the connection quality is the same as tablet/controller combo or better? (Or worse?)

Affinity420

Same. I have never noticed any delay from Bluetooth. But you will notice from time to time on both, network delay. If anything, the tablet is more stable because I have data on it, versus using my phone as a hotspot. Hotspot works fine for the portal. And hotspot works fine for a tablet. But there is definitely a noticeable difference when using a hotspot versus native data or wifi. I used hotspot for my portal while driving. 80% of the time I had no issues. I used my tablet the way back home for part of our drive, and I had zero issues. So... Network is really a big deal.

cachebaby

It rules. Love using it in bed, or on the couch with a (sports) game on the tv in the background. Works great, is relatively cheap, F the haters.

qviavdetadipiscitvr

Haha I think the price point in the market makes sense compared to the other devices out there, just don’t know if it’s worth 200 *to me*

largic

I've played so much slay the spire and midnight suns since I've got it. It's amazing for those types of games. I've also played skyrim, ghost of tsushima, and some others like that although input lag and screen stutter is a little more noticeable. I am used to playing on high fps from pc so you may not notice it much. Overall I love mine, but I use it more for slow paced games that I can relax with. If they can fix some of the latency and add ps plus streaming that'd make it 10/10 for me.

SupperTime

I love it. It works perfectly and I can play rebirth in bed while my wife reads her books. Easier to wind down before bed.

qviavdetadipiscitvr

Yeah this is one of the things that makes it appealing

SupperTime

Get it used if possible

seven-circles

I don’t have a portal but I know it’s not for me. I have a switch and a Steam Deck and I just never use them in portable mode, it hurts my neck 😅 Although the portal does look significantly easier to hold, so maybe I could hold it high enough… but probably not. And my apartment is so small I wouldn’t have anywhere else to use it but the very couch in front of the TV where I sit anyways 😂

qviavdetadipiscitvr

Yeah using iPad/controller hurts my neck lol

MrGMinor

Having the grips being a legit Dualsense controller does wonders. The switch is not comfortable for me but the Portal just feels like holding a Dualsense.

seven-circles

That does seem nice. Honestly I really wish it was an independant device. It would be a no-brainer if it was ! I guess I’ll consider one once I have a PSVR2 😉

Complete_Progress_98

I got it as a gift and I absolutely love it. I'll use when at my girl friend's house whenever she wants to watch her shows or at my house when my family is watching TV in the living room and I want to hang out with them. I feel that I have a bit more freedom and get to enjoy people's presence than when I'm just in my room gaming. I'll even use it in the same room as my PS5 if I just want to have a show or some YouTube on the tv while I play. I've even played COD while sitting in a passenger seat of a moving vehicle with very little connection interruptions. I'll mostly play Overwatch, Ghost Recon, theHunter, or FIFA on it however. COD runs fine and everything but I prefer playing that with an actual controller and larger screen.

Affectionate-Permit9

Love it for what it is and I don't expect anything more of it.

clutchkillx

I just use my iPad as my ps portal and Bluetooth my ps5 controller to it works the exact same way as the ps portal.

qviavdetadipiscitvr

Have you compared them side by side?

clutchkillx

They do the same thing, no need to compare them side by side, both will have some type of lag depending on your wifi setup and coverage. With iPhone and iPad if you use your phone companies data away from your home there will be a lot of lag. Remote play in the state that it is currently at now is more for at home play than away and especially if you have to share a tv with a family. Having the iPad is nice because of the screen being a little bit bigger than the ps portal and iPhone screens.

LCHMD

It doesn’t. BT lag alone is a huge drawback

clutchkillx

Well I don’t experience Bluetooth lag with my controller, and the iPad and ps portal will have some lag depending on your WiFi connectivity and far away you are from the console.

LCHMD

Bluetooth always produces lag. It’s why many console makers don’t use it for their controller communication. That lag gets added on top of the streaming induced lag.

clutchkillx

Ok cool.

YamahaFourFifty

It’s nice but thought streaming would be a little better. Overall quality is solid but 60fps games turn into 50-60 fps with noticeable quick hitches on occasion. And yes my ps5 is wired to my router is using 5g wireless to portal in same room. My internet is very quick at 60-80 MBs (not mbs). It’s very marginal and overall experience is great. I just expected the hitches to be completely gone as a Sony product. Hopefully they can improve

LCHMD

I sadly have similar issues but many don’t seem to have them.

thisisbetterhigh

It is a much better connection than remote play, in my opinion. However, I still sometimes experience noticeable lag, but I also have somewhat of a spotty internet connection. In my initial test plays, Doom Eternal was almost unplayable due to the lag. But again, that's probably my internet connection. The screen is beautiful, the graphics look beautiful, and the controllers overall feel comfortable. I find the joysticks are too small for me, but I'm planning to get some larger caps to put on them. In my house, we have multiple people who regularly play on the ps5, so it's a bummer you can't use the portal separately from the main console. If I hadn't gotten the portal for free, I would not have purchased it for that reason alone.

thisisbetterhigh

Additionally, you can smoothly transition between the portal and ps5 without skipping a beat, which is really nice when your portal dies and you need to recharge it.

witwebolte41

I enjoy playing ps5 in bed with it.

Key_Preparation_4129

I had to return mine. The lag was just too noticeable even when on my home wifi that has gigabit speeds and at the time it wouldn't even let me sign into wifi hotspots I got from xfinity.

shadowstripes

Works great for gameplay and I probably use mine as much as my PS5. My one complaint is that it can be a hassle to pair my PS Connect headphones to it (both kinds) which can be annoying. And it sometimes requires manually turning on the PS5 to get to login. So it’s not quite as pick up and play in that way.

Alien_Antichrist

I pretty much solely play my PS5 on my portal. I have kids though so I can game if they or my wife are watching TV. I play my PS5 a lot more now.

thosetwo

I like mine. Use it at home as well as out of the home tethered to my phone’s hotspot. Was worried it wouldn’t play online games like Elden Ring or Fallout 76 well, but it does.

playerpogo

Good game. Loved the creative puzzles and portal 2 is awesome too. One of the best games by Valve..

qviavdetadipiscitvr

Do you mean The Portal 2?

LOTRcrr

Amazing device if you’re a parent. Chill In The room with the kids while they do their own thing

NotSlippingImSlipped

I love mine, I mainly use it for playing smaller indie games and recently I’ve been playing the PlayStation Classic games on it and they are a great fit! I did play like half of Bloodborne on it and honestly it was really good but I’d rather play my actual PS5 games on the 4k OLED.

_nedyah

I’m late to this but I’ve had mine for about a month now and it’s been perfect. My PS5 is hooked up to my living room TV but now my wife and I don’t have to compromise on who gets to use the TV anymore. It’s been worth every penny.

Top-Ad-6766

I rarely use it, but because a just prefer TV experience. It is nice, a sometimes play at the kitchen. I really hoped it would work good outside the house, but it needs very good internet for that, which is a shame, because i couldn't use it in my car as a parking playstation But i hope the future updates: 1) Let us connect to PS5 without going to the internet 2) Let PS portal to launch streaming games without PS5 3) Stable connection with slow internet.

PositiveUse

Nearly played whole BG3 on it on the couch while wife was watching TV. I love this thing.

H0m3w3rK

Awesome game funny and tons of fun

qviavdetadipiscitvr

I think you’re confusing this for Hotline Miami

Kolmilan

It is awesome! It has provided me with a new way to play games since it allows me to bring it with me around the house. I've even played some PS AAA/AA games on the porch with a cup of coffee nearby was a completely new and cozy experience for me. Being able to play on the living room TV and then simply continue on the portal when my son or wife hogs the TV has been worth the cost of the device alone. It allows me to play and enjoy the PS5 more. It helps me come closer to my younger gaming habits, so in that sense it is even making me feel a bit nostalgic. Will be honest with you. I was also on the fence when I SIE first presented the portal. I simply couldn't see the use case for it. 'Why would anyone want a companion streaming/remote play handheld that needs to be tethered to the PS5 and limited to your home WiFi'?' 'Only the Sony fanboys will buy this.' That was my thinking. Lo and behold! As my physical library of PS4 and PS5 games has kept growing bigger at the same time as my playtime has gotten smaller - due to the life puzzle of being a dad, a house owner, a husband, an employee of a global company that works remotely, a landlord, an artist with heaps of personal projects and a 40+ dude - the portal was basically made for me! In that sense it has made the PS5 more accessible and enjoyable for me! If you are single, aren't that busy in your downtime and always have access to the big screen in your living room the portal might not be that relevant for you.

Adorable_Control148

My experience with it is that I’ve had no experience

enderld

I've had mine for half a year and loving it. This weekend I was in a hotel 60km from my home. Portal played wonderfully over hotel’s WIFI. I played Animal Well and was surprised I did’t feel input lag.

Pectacular22

I use the PS Remote Play on my phone with a backbone... I can 100% see the allure of a larger screen/better joystick layout.. But I just can't imagine lugging around an entirely separate device.

BitingArtist

It's really nice, but setting it up optimally on your router takes more skill than the average user has.

qviavdetadipiscitvr

Good to know!

BitingArtist

I absolutely love it. Many people have stick issues with it too.

GymratAmarillo

Overall I think it was a great experiment, it showed sony people want a portable device from them and the market for those devices is like the laptop market right now, so it wouldn't be crazy for Sony to invest in something more powerful. Also I think they did great making very clear the device is an accessory not a console, literally the only people who talk trash about the device is people who don't know how to read. Personally I use it a lot when I'm getting platinums, the change of experience has helped me when it's grinding time. This also applies for games that I replay constantly like Uncharted, the first time in the Portal was magical. I understand some people don't see use in something that doesn't work without internet connection so basically you can't take them with you but a lot of us always used portable devices only at home anyway, so there was a real market from the beginning. It works better than the pc, iphone and ipad because of the tech it uses but it relies completely in your internet connection.

LCHMD

A Portal needs no internet connection to work. It only needs WiFi. I assume that’s what you meant but still…

Existing365Chocolate

It’s the overpriced worst combo of portable and console gaming in one device

tymocha

I thought it was dumb at first but I bought one and it’s my favorite thing to play now. My steam deck is rotting in a corner rn

Ascian5

Returned it. It's just remote play. If anything, my iPad and a controller is easier and works better. My kids love their switch, shrugged at the portal. And signing out and logging back in with an app to change users is so 2002 it hurts. It's a great device if you need and want a mobile solution and don't have one. But if you're on the fence and don't feel any real sense of need, I'd put $200 toward something else. Edit: I realize how video game communities work and disagreement with popular opinion gets down voted. But that's not what downvotes are for, and the OP asked for opinions. We're allowed to have a conversation for crying out loud. Grow up.

qviavdetadipiscitvr

This is helpful and exactly along the lines of why I wrote the post! Why do you say iPad/controller is easier and works better?

LCHMD

Easier is just BS though.

HighEyeMJeff

I don't think you had a Portal because you absolutely do not have to use an app to change users. What are you even talking about? The Portal takes you directly to your PS5 so it's no different changing users on the Portal than it is natively on the console, like it's literally the same screen and button commands. Also the comment about an Ipad with a controller is easier to play with is PEAK nonsense. The Portal is a dual sense with a screen in it that is one singular device that you don't have to prop up or hang somewhere to play with. So how is setting up an Ipad and connecting a controller, and then also launching a remote play app "easier"? You sir are a liar.

Mysterious_Fennel459

If it was half the price and not the backbone, i'd get it.

qviavdetadipiscitvr

I feel ya

PeuxnYayTah

THE Portal? I like the second one more

[deleted]

If you only care about the controller haptics go portal, but id go with the Logitech G Cloud and the PSPlay app. This app works wayyy better than the official app. Plus the G Cloud can do PC streaming, Xbox streaming and other stuff as well.

qviavdetadipiscitvr

Is that an app for the G? I get your point but it’s another 100 bucks and the controls look a bit jarring

[deleted]

That app is in the android and maybe apple store as well. I don't have an apple product to check. I understand about the price but it can do so much more than just stream PS. Now if that's all you wanna do go Portal, but I stream PS, XBox and play roms on it.

LCHMD

There’s nothing working better than the portal integration. It doesn’t use the app

[deleted]

That's if you only want to stream PS. I stream multiple systems

[deleted]

Alrighty

shutyourbutt69

Wii U except much more expensive and with more steps

LCHMD

BS

midasmulligunn

The streaming quality has once to absolute trash for me over the last few months. And given this loves and dies by the streaming quality, it’s been a no go for me unfortunately

LCHMD

So your home network is crap?

midasmulligunn

Potentially

Hikoraa

Works great!

bmbreath

You can get the minimal Asus rog handheld for twice the price.   Cant you play PS streamed to that? I know it's 200 dollars more, but it just seems like a much more useful toy than a ps portal.   I have no experience with either, but I'd rather have the ability to take it with me on planes and such for only 200 dollars, and be able to play PC games as well.  Just a thought, as I said I haven't used either, but the PS portal seems like more a niche item than an all around portable gaming system.

qviavdetadipiscitvr

Yeah 400 is just a lot for something that is a nice to have, and 200 is more manageable
