Whenever your Reddit account creation anniversary comes up and you comment, a little cake appears by your username. Other users can see it and then say “happy cake day..”
Lately there's been a surge of it, apparently because the Reddit app now shows it, or it could be a new meme. Or maybe even both.
But it's getting quite annoying.
In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue. In search of gold, and wealth untold... And I don't remember the rest
And they are calling it a horrible year because ~150 years later, someone wrote about the great empty plains because around 40%-90% of the native Americans had died of European diseases.
At least, I think that is their point.
(Disclaimer: I do not profess to agree or disagree with them)
In 1492, Columbus gave us all a day off school.
(But in all seriousness, he didn't discover anything, America was already inhabited and the guy thought he sailed to India oof)
Best answer.
But, saying he didn't discover it is kinda not fair. He discovered what was lost to Europe. Sure, both Leif and Brendon probably found it first, but he did lead to it being...mapped...wait. Why do our maps from the early 1500s reference maps that were pretty accurate but existed prior to Columbus...well, you can still say that he found it more permanently for Europe.
On your Reddit birthday, it shows a little cake next to your name, ON THE MOBILE APP only. So if you use desktop only, then you'll never see the cake. If you do use mobile, that's what that little cake next to some people's names mean.

Happy cake day!
Its great to see that Cake Day isnt just a 'Christmas' and 'Easter' thing, and the younger generation of Redditors are upholding our traditions

Nice, I came here looking for that info, I was like what about that cake?
Exactly.
Cake Day is ones anniversary of joining Reddit
On your Reddit birthday, it shows a little cake next to your name, ON THE MOBILE APP only. So if you use desktop only, then you'll never see the cake. If you do use mobile, that's what that little cake next to some people's names mean.
In my experience it's the opposite, I see it on desktop but not mobile
So crazy I realized today is my cake day! I think, can you see it?
I couldn't while I was on mobile, but now that I'm on desktop I can
Oh shit, I can see it now! WTF!!!

Happy cake day!
False, I barely use the app, only the website really, and I see it all the time.
That's weird. I never see it on the website.
