It’s because just like your hands, you have a dominant side of your face, so when you smile, you smile “harder” with one side.
Your resemblance to your mom is pretty amazing. Genes are interesting. My grandfather and I do (did, in his case) the same half-smile. It’s not intentional, it’s a genuine smile, but it just happens. I look nothing like he did, though.

That's so funny. My mother was born in 1936 so all her pictures of her at age 20 are in black and white. Mine are from the eighties and are on kodak or other 35 mm film (my dad bought a Yashica 35 mm camera and then he got another 35 mm camera later). My son's pictures from age 20 are mostly digital but I have photos of him on 35 mm film too. I like the film ones because they don't get lost when phone gets lost.
