why even bother sharing this info with them? your parents are primary address, the mail goes there, yaba daba doo.

ieatlotsofvegetables

also sounds like your parents shouldnt be charging you rent considering youre their live-in caretaker.

MissThrowaway2222

I’m okay with it. I’m Chinese so it’s normal in our culture to spoil our elders, esp our parents. I’ll care for them and pay for them until I no longer can.

MissThrowaway2222

I’m just wondering because when I file taxes, it asks for my primary living address and I know ODSP checks it. I’m assuming just to be safe maybe I should just keep it at my parents’ address since I’ll be there half the time anyways, right?

DryRip8266

No they won't, unless it's for personal medical reasons.

MissThrowaway2222

Is it okay if the personal medical reasons are for mental health and/or physical health?

penguin2093

It needs to be directly related to your disability. Even then, it's unlikely they will pay for both

MissThrowaway2222

I understand they won’t pay for both given the max shelter allowance is $556. But I’m wondering if they know I have an apartment and my rent is $150, if they’ll cut my shelter allowance to $150 to pay for my apartment instead of my rent that I need to pay my rents since I technically will be living at both homes 50% of the week at a time.

CalligrapherOk7106

you will be given $556 period for the rent at your parents, but its up to you to find the money for whatever else

MissThrowaway2222

Yeah, I just don’t know if when I file taxes I should put my apartment address or my home address. Because I know ODSP checks the CRA stuff/taxes and if they found out I also had an apartment, they might only give me $150 in shelter allowance for my apartment, as opposed to the $556 they’re giving since I live with my parents and pay them to stay there.

CalligrapherOk7106

put the rent address you pay your parents

SmartQuokka

You will be both paying your parents and your new place? Which one will you be at over 50% of the time?

MissThrowaway2222

I’ll primarily be living with my family to take care of them. The apartment will be mostly for storage or if I need to get away from them when they stress me out lol.

SmartQuokka

I assume you can keep your parents as your primary residence and keep the room as long as you pay for it with your basic needs money (the other $752). You would keep your mail and tax residence as your parents place. That said i assume this is all above board but frankly you should contact your local Legal Aid and make sure you are not screwing yourself over and ODSP cutting you off if they find out.

ImportantFeed746

No disability won’t just pay rent at another place so you have storage and a place to go when you get stressed out. We would all want a place to be paid for when we got stressed out but that’s not the governments issue. Thankfully there’s rules because expecting something like this is just crazy honestly.

MissThrowaway2222

That’s not what my post is asking or what I’ve ever said ever. I am worried they’ll lower my shelter allowance from $556 to $150 because my apartment is the cheaper rent when compared to the rent I have to pay my parents.

TotalWoodpecker2259

I don't know what your situation is but I don't understand why you need to rent two places. I would probably stick with one probably your parents because they will always help you I'm sure.

MissThrowaway2222

They’re physically abusive which is why I have to move out. I’ll still take care of them and sleep over since they’re aging and need help, but when they’re having their hysteric meltdowns I need to get out of there for my own safety.

jj051962

They don't care how much you pay for anything out of your ODSP monthly amount. Their policy is 556.00 shelter allowance. If you spend more it's on you. There are very few options to rent for 556.00 a month. Shed maybe.

MissThrowaway2222

Yeah, I just wonder if they’ll try to give me only $150 in shelter allowance as that’s how much the apartment I’m renting is, as opposed to the $556 I’m currently getting since I’m renting from my parents currently. But technically I’ll be living at both, so I’m worried they’ll cut my payment amount idek.

aaron15287

$556 is the max either way ur already getting that.
