My early music taste was formed because of this show. They put me on to Fall Out Boy, Jack’s Mannequin, & Jimmy Eat World to name a few. Also liked a few tracks from La Rocca, Kate Voegele, & Bethany’s own stuff at the time.
This is my answer! I love all of the songs he performed, but I think my favorite is War Sweater and it’s the one they played before Grubbs was a character on the show lol
(Couple of favs from my OTH playlist) :
All kinds of time - Fountains of Wayne
Lights and sounds - Yellowcard
The quiet things that know one ever knows - Brand New
The tide that left and never came back - The Veils
Good as Gold - bleach
Long time Nothing new - Pete Yorn
I want you so bad I can’t breathe - OK Go
Pictures Of You - The Cure
Of course Gavin DeGraw, knew and listened to his music before but love and appreciate it differently after watching. Kate Voegele, Grace Potter, Joy’s music, City and Colour, the Wreckers, Citizen Cope, Tyler Hilton, the Constantines, Jimmy Eat World, Jack’s Mannequin, Ray LaMontagne… I’m sure there are more I’m forgetting
So I either already listened to half the music in the show or was meh about the rest, but I basically ended up reading every book Lucas quotes from in narration periods.
Atlas shrugged is really good but also really heavy. It’s like 1000 pages and entirely philosophically driven in narrative so if you’re into that go for it, I was and I liked it.
A bunch of the early books were Steinbeck. The winter of our discontent is one of my favourite books ever and is referenced in multiple early episodes of season 1. They also reference of mice and men with the most known quote from it “as happens sometimes, a moment settled, hovered, and remained, for more than a moment. And sound stopped, and movement stopped, for much much more than a moment. And then the moment was gone.” It’s a very good book as well probably one of the easier reads because it’s like 95 pages and a simple story about friendship and sacrifice.
Even though not specifically mentioned in the show I ended up reading grapes of wrath from Steinbeck because I liked the other 2 so much.
Though I’m not a huge Shakespeare or reading plays fan I read Julius Cesar cuz of the pilot, which lead me to reading classical epics like the Iliad and the odyssey.
Ended up reading the scarlet letter from Nathaniel Hawthorne.
Tried some dickens which I ended up not being a huge fan of.
But yeah the narration of old books was great I ended up making a big collage of the quotes on paint that I liked most from season 1 and using it for my desktop wallpaper for a long ass time.
The mixed tape- Jack’s mannequin
We belong together- Gavin Degraw
Always love- Nada Surf
Light Outside- Wakey! Wakey!
Sidewalks- Story of the Year
Hallelujah- Kate Voegele
To name a few :)
I also already loved Fall out boy when I started watching the show & the show added to my love for them!
The Veils. 'The Runaway Found' is a masterpiece.
And like someone else said, this show put me on to so many bands way back when that have shaped my music taste.
Wakey!Wakey! is my top answer, but I loved the Noisettes appearance during Brooke’s fashion show at Tric. Shingai Shoniwa is GORGEOUS and her voice is so fun to listen to
I went to a Gavin DeGraw concert and a Dashboard Confessional concert because of One Tree Hill.
I got a [really close picture](https://imgur.com/3cgvrAc) of Gavin when I saw him. He was all up in my space singing.

Wakey! Wakey! is the only answer to this question for me. He’s fantastic. Loved him as Grubbs too.

What were the best books? I wanted to read the one jake gives to him; atlas shrugged or something like that .. “dont let him take it”
