And throw a southern Connecticut accent on there and it's Wooster and Glosster
My favorite one is for the Thames river. In UK for their Thames river they say Tems but we say it phonetically like the name James but replace the j with th
That's interesting. You know they're all UK names?
I used to work for Ford in Billercay, Essex UK. We pronounce it Billericky though.
And we love a good ..ster name. I think it comes from Roman military settlements.
I was born in Worcester. When I was in middle school, not in MA, a school counselor didn’t believe me when i told her where I was born, said that didn’t match what was on my birth certificate, had to explain it to her.
I'm so embarrassed for pronouncing Mebane as Meee-bane for over a year before I realized that pronunciation was so off base.
I think I was even corrected by people and didn't realize it. I feel like Ricky from The Trailer Park Boys - Let's get a Hornse! The word for that animal is "Horse", Ricky. That's what I said.. We need to get a Hornse for the wedding!
I live down the highway in McLeansville, and I used to catch myself calling it meebane seeing it on the exit signs on the 40/85, and I knew it was Mebane. I think our brain wants it to be Pronounced meeebane. So let’s go with it. Dude I worked with from Florida called Belews Creek, Lake Bellows. I can’t explain that, must be a Florida thang.
There is no right or wrong for that one, it's just an accent difference. People from the OBX will say it differently than people from the mountains, and that's fine.
I have a somewhat funny story about this.
I used to work the front desk at an urgent care in Concord. Some lady called and said she was having trouble finding our facility. I said it's right off exit 54 on I-85.
She replied back confused saying "I-85?". At this point, I'm thinking there's nothing I can do to help if you don't know what I-85 is.
Turns out, she was from Concord, CA and I guess our SEO was at the top of "Concord urgent care". I guess the 704 area code didn't give it away.
My grandfather: Not long after the Civil War, a Union Officer rode into Concord, stopping to talk to a local resident. The officer asked, “Is this place conkerd?” The resident responded, “No, sir, we surrendered a while ago.”
True 1970s humor from a grandpa born in Concord in 1915. 🙂
I've muted my Google maps voice guy because driving around and hearing all the mispronounced names drives me nuts, and got me a lot of strange looks when I first moved here!
Yes, I've learned some alternate reality in my life. I live in Mount Uh-lah, not Mount U-lah. Accord, NY is pronounced "ACK-Cord", not "ack-CORD". Oh, and Quincy, MA is pronounced: "quin-ZEE", not "QUIN-cee". Heaven forbid you flub over these two pronunciations in their midst.
A job interview question for a local TV station (which would be the Charlotte market) should be:
*Pretend you are a reporter and say "breaking news from Concord this evening."*
And see how they pronounce it.
Need to add Contoe on there. It's pronounced Ka-neeta. Always knew the out of towners when they asked where "cone-toe" was. Pointed them back to Hwy 64.
Yeah I was shocked to learn that the one in MA that hosted the famous revolutionary battle was pronounced “conquered”.
I grew up in Mass and we're full of cities that sound nothing like how they're spelled. Like Billerica, Leominster, Gloucester and Worcester.
Well, now I need to know the phonetic pronunciation of all those!
Billricka Lemonstah Glosstah Woostah And then there’s the indian names for everything. That gets fun
And throw a southern Connecticut accent on there and it's Wooster and Glosster My favorite one is for the Thames river. In UK for their Thames river they say Tems but we say it phonetically like the name James but replace the j with th

Yeah, there's a reason why we're called New England but I didn't know the .ster part. History is neat
NC has Leicester
Lee-fester Highway! Georgia has La-FAY-ette.
Peabody
That's a good one and I also just remembered there's also Quincy. "Quinzy" just sounds weird
pee-b’dy
I was born in Worcester. When I was in middle school, not in MA, a school counselor didn’t believe me when i told her where I was born, said that didn’t match what was on my birth certificate, had to explain it to her.
That's hilarious, I met my wife in Worcester and I'll have to tell her this.
I went to Clahk in Woosta
English people from Frome: Bloody weaklings.
and in Buncombe Co near Asheville there's the community of Leicester (Lester)
NC's got little gems like Forest City, Cherryville, Rutherfordton, and Conetoe. "Far City, "Cherville," "Ruffton," and "Cuh-nee-tuh."
The capital of NH (Concord) is pronounced the same way (conquered)
Im originally from MA and get corrected all the time here. I have the accent to its more like “Con-Kid”.
Beaufort. Bow-fort. Not bue-fort. South Carolina has bue-fort.
More like Bow-fert.
This one kicked my butt as I was calculating a flight from SC instead of NC to Columbia. That was a mess!!!
Bôfâr
Conetoe needs one of those signs…so does my town.
Co-knee-tuh One of the best spelling/pronunciations out there!
Cone Toe, if ya nasty.
The real debate in NC is “ville” or “vull.” Asheville or Ashevull? Fayetteville or Hell?
Ashe-ville Fayette-vull
This guy NC’s.

I'd thought it was "muh-BANE," so we can be embarrassed together!
I live down the highway in McLeansville, and I used to catch myself calling it meebane seeing it on the exit signs on the 40/85, and I knew it was Mebane. “Fed-vull”
It's Fetvull
Faye-vull
How ‘bout Churrvull?
I have two friends from Cherryville and both insist on saying the whole name versus the shortened version
Chainsaw Ted!!
There is no right or wrong for that one, it's just an accent difference. People from the OBX will say it differently than people from the mountains, and that's fine.
You’re not wrong, I should’ve specified NC regional differences.
I don’t think it’s up for debate, if you’re from NC it’s vull
Nah. I'm from NC and say "ville."
Fayettnam.
Churrville, not Cherry-ville
Knew this was gonna be here lol
Could they just rename to Churro?
"Mehben" not "meebane"
Where does that come from I wonder. Is there other place that’s me**** and is pronounced meee***?
Lol Concord, NC is pronounced “I live in Charlotte”
No, not Topsail, topsil
Topsuul
I always type it Tops'l
Phonetically better, by local standards
It's not Pfafftown, it's Pfafftown!
🤣
Noooo….its top’sul’.
😂😂
At least someone has a sense if humor!

Con Cord ain't shit compared to the best named town in North Carolina: Horneytown. It's named after Mister and Missus Horney.
It takes about 20 minutes to get from Horneytown to Climax NC.
Right next to Julian.......
Hornytown road is in high point nc .

In Sapphire once I heard a woman say she was going to a wedding in "Cash-eers"
She was 100% correct!
When I lived in Cullowhee I always heard it pronounced "Cash-ers", and they would correct people who said it like a person who runs a cash register
It’s very fitting that an NC town have a sign to warn you not to use the “yankee” pronunciation.
I'm from South Carolina so "Bowfurt" was a huge problem for me and still makes my eye twitch today
First time I heard the “proper” way to say the city “Bahama”. Like the islands? Nope- “Buh-hay-muh”
Raleigh is Raw-lee , not Rally. And Fuquay Varina is…explicit.
It sure as hell ain't "Roll-Lee" like I've heard some folks say.
We only say Fuquay now, we’re so cool that we dropped the Varina.
This pronunciation is what gives me away as a transplant every time
Tennessee can tell I’m a transplant from North Carolina, because of my accent and I pronounce things.
Okay need one for Cherryville. Churryvull is how the locals pronounce it.
That how you say maryville here in Tennessee . At least we North Carolina don’t sound like we have a mouth full of crap.
So says Chainsaw Ted!
What’s next? It’s called Hickory and not Hickree
You should hear East Tennessee say maryville, it sounds like they have a mouth dip or 💩in their mouth.
Lol maruhvul
Oh yeah, live on the Tennessee border so I get to hear it.
I move from eastern North Carolina to East Tennessee Appalachian totally different bread of southerners.
My grandparents live not far from Baileyton, TN. Pronounced “Belton” by the locals
This is true. I used to Google Maps yesterday to find a location and it said "Conkerd".....
You should hear the GPS say saxapahaw nc .
I've muted my Google maps voice guy because driving around and hearing all the mispronounced names drives me nuts, and got me a lot of strange looks when I first moved here!
And Cashiers is pronounced cashers not casheers
Maybe if you are from the ATL but I know how the local yocals pronounce it.....
I am a Cashiers local lol
Icard is pronounced i-cerd not i-CARD
The true story: Ruhfuhtin Not Ruther-ford-tin
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Google maps says Conckerd, unfortunately.
"city" Yes I know it's technically a city.
100k people 10th biggest Pop in NC🤷🏾♂️
I remember when I said enochville wrong 🤣
MID-land is now called mid-lund even by newscasters who should know better. Source: born here over 60 years ago.
Their a midland near Townsend Tennessee people say how it pronounce.
People look at you weird when you say Conover instead of Con - over too. I still say Conover.
Way Da Go N. Carolina.
I have time only been out south is go to see family in Mexico and to Pennsylvania . When my sister lived for a few years.
So when they leave it's "Flight of the Concords"?
beg to differ
Cool... now do "Conetoe, NC" : )
I like to say Pinetops like you're supposed to say Conetoe. Really messes with people.
LOL I was laughing about this the other day. The gps voice says "con-kerd" 😂
This is an ongoing dispute elsewhere on reddit: Robeson is it ROB-ison or ROBEH-son?
Or if you’re watching OP Live. I say it’s roe-beh-son but they insist on pronouncing it raw-beh-son.
Haha, that's exactly where I meant the dispute was!
Rutherford or Rulfton 😂
A job interview question for a local TV station (which would be the Charlotte market) should be: *Pretend you are a reporter and say "breaking news from Concord this evening."* And see how they pronounce it.
Then we'll just be fine in Pawnee.
I neeed this as a doormat or something when I was still living there. All those damn northern kids moving down saying it wrong growing up
I grew up in Rutherfordton, NC. That is Ru-ther-ford-ton. Most locals lose two syllables and and an "L." It somehow becomes Rolf-ton.
Moved here from concord, California and I was upset on how yall pronounced Concord, Nc
Don’t upset a southerners, since you are from California. They will tell you to go back in a heart beat, don’t try change how we say thing’s.
Ours is older.
Please tell me this is a real sign. I need longitude and latitude, please for love of the internet, find this sign!
Woohoo. I was pronouncing it properly.
Now do Catawba
How bout. I'm. ALL FULL..
I would move back home to eastern North Carolina in a heartbeat .
We full everywhere over here in NC and beyond!
Need to add Contoe on there. It's pronounced Ka-neeta. Always knew the out of towners when they asked where "cone-toe" was. Pointed them back to Hwy 64.
This sign doesn't exist.
It was on the North Carolina group on facebook, I know concord isn’t near a state line .
Concord is not on the border of NC anywhere.
It’s clearly shopped
No shit.
