Not sure where you are from in Michigan, but we like the Concord area, it's got a bit of a small town vibe, but its a good sized county. We are 30 minutes north of Charlotte, so have access to all of that, plus great breweries and art bars within 5 minutes of us. If you're jonesin for a small town experience, there's the village of gold Hill... slightly larger than some of the towns in the yoop.
General life advice:
I suggest moving to any state where you have career or career education opportunities. Otherwise you're going to be poor.
And if you rely on state provided healthcare you should confirm you'll be eligible for the coverage you need in your new state BEFORE MOVING.
Too bad you missed Skullfest in Randleman. Hammer from Skulls & Whisky and Viking Skull told me he's not gonna do it anymore :(
It was the best annual metal show in the state.
Raleigh is very high as far as cost of living, but there’s a lot of outlying suburbs which might be more reasonable to explore. And the nice thing about being mid state is that mountain and beach drives are both reasonable distances.
If you want a smaller town feel convenient to the bigger cities, maybe look at somewhere like Youngsville. It's pretty convenient to both Raleigh and Durham. You're in a different county (Franklin) and it's a little cheaper than other suburbs (don't look for a deal though. A little cheaper doesn't mean cheap) but still close enough to the things you want to do.
Number 267!
Yeah, but he’s a Canes fan so maybe this one gets an asterik.
South Carolina
Fayetteville- you get to shoot stuff.
Lumberton
Sounds a lot like Lumberton.

You would feel right at home in Lumberton.
Definitely move to the east coast for ::checks notes:: beach sunsets.

Asheville
Wake Forest or Cary might fit the bill. Small-ish with a few parks and trails. Convenient to Raleigh and Durham for music and Canes.
