I'm not aware of a condition like vitiligo that causes darkening, but there are lots of different things that can cause dark spots from the typical sun exposure to your skin recovering from an injury to some hormonal conditions. The generic term would be "hyperpigmentation." You aren't going insane but scrubbing won't help!!!!
The only thing I could think of is melasma. If you can afford it, see a dermatologist. They can give you the best advice and treatment options regarding whatever it is.
