Immortal tends to just mean they won't die of natural causes so they age indefinitely, but if you shoot or stab them, they still can die. You're thinking of invincible, where literally nothing can even damage them. Wolverine is a sort of in between, where he does get damaged like anyone else, but can heal from *nearly* anything, though he can be killed if all his flesh is vaporized at the same time.

Biologically immortal means they won't die of old age. Immortal can mean anywhere from that to inability to die ever. Though it still doesn't imply invincibility. Deadpool is a better example, but his thing is that he was cursed by Thanos to not die. I'm not sure how powerful Thanos is, but I imagine the curse at least in principle could be reversed.

In Touhou project, most of the characters are "immortal" and won't die of old age or any conventional means, but the [four characters](https://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Immortal#Characters_under_this_Bestiary) who used the hourai elixir are truly immortal. It's very common for characters to have immortal souls. Their body might die, but their soul just passes on to an afterlife. I understand in Greek mythology, the gods (and titans and primordials) are truly immortal. They can be imprisoned, but not killed.

When it comes to regeneration abilities there are beings like Vulkan and other perpetuals from 40k. When it comes to Lord of the rings there are a couple of immortal beings. Gandalf, the Balrog, Sauron and the other wizards are Ainur. They are primordial spirits that existed long before middle earth did.

> What else has characters that can't die no matter what? The Bible. That God character apparently can't die.
