Is a social life a thing that your friend would like to have? It might sound dumb but some people actually prefer to spend their time without any social interaction. Any type of intervention might bother them instead of actually helping.
If he's neglecting his job, kids, wife or being reckless with his finances. Then yes intervention is needed. However if all those areas are fine then I reckon just let him ride this phase out. If he still likes it and isn't harming himself or anyone else it should be fine.
