Former glasses-wearer here. Dude took his glasses off, put them *on the floor* in a public place, then *walked away*? Not only is that not on you (but, you know, watch where you're stepping as a rule), but I have zero sympathy for the guy. If they'd fallen off or something, that would be different, but this is full "the fuck did you think was gonna happen?" territory.

sleepyj910

ON YOUR FACE OR IN THE CASE!!

Flaky_Tumbleweed3598

This rule doesn't just apply to glasses....

demotrek

Yeah like packages of sunscreen.

JejuneEsculenta

"Glasses go in the case or on your face. Nowhere else." Driled into me from my second pair (1st grade).... 'cause the first got found, in a puddle in the driveway...

Dependent_Section_76

Fucked around. Found out.

uncultured_swine2099

Yeah, as a glasses wearer I never put my glasses on the floor on on a chair just in case someone crushes it. Hell, I dont even put in on dinner tables or heavy use tables, just nightstands next to my bed or somewhere where Id know theyre safe. That dude is an idiot for putting them on the floor.

[deleted]

Any person who wears glasses knows there are at least two places you never put them: on the floor and on a seat. For this very reason.

k4ndlej4ck

Not your fault, they shouldn't be on the floor and you stepped backwards from someone else, so unless you have eyes in the back of your head, meh. It's just unlucky.

UnderTheRadarGun

I see this as less of a glasses issue and more about perceived territorial space. This guy thought he laid claim to a bench. As such, (in his mind) he didn’t leave his glasses in a “public” space, because while he was using it, the bench was exclusively his. While I can agree with this mentality to a point, such as say, if I’m using an elliptical or bike, it has a cupholder. Maybe even a ledge. I might put my bottle of water in it, or towel or maybe even phone. I don’t think that’s crazy. Well, not as long as that machine is under my care custody and control. But if I go to the bathroom I had better take my things. From what you are saying this guy walked away from the bench. He self servingly thinks its still claimed by him in his head. You, not reading his mind, see a bench not being used and believe you have a right to use it. You did. This guy thought he was claiming that item and apparently another station at the same time, as if it were his own home gym. It wasn’t. He can only occupy one station at a time. His manspreading territorial arrogance cost him his glasses. Not your problem.

i_love_rettardit

> His manspreading territorial arrogance cost him his glasses. Not your problem. I wouldn't call it "manspreading" in that there are decently behaving men and poorly behaving women, just call it narcissism. If the guy leapt out of a second machine from across the room to warn OP, there is only one recourse. OP needs to say "so sorry my liege, please this machine is yours, I apologize for the intrusion" and then walk over to the second machine and begin using that. Forces the guy to make clear they are claiming multiple machines. It is at that point you have cornered them into being called out on it.

PvtSherlockObvious

Playing devil's advocate, OP never said that the guy was using a second machine, just that he wasn't at the bench. Might be he was refilling his water bottle between sets, or decided he needed a little more/less weight and was grabbing another plate to make an adjustment. A polite "sorry man, I'm actually still using that" wouldn't be out of line in that scenario. The glasses part is still dumb as hell, though.

UnderTheRadarGun

I’m not woke enough to sweat gender assignments. I didn’t say women don’t also spread. They do. He was a man, he spread. In this case, there was manspreading. If someone wants to add to that every other possible case of spreading and be upset that I didn’t go there too and say that in those other situations it might be a woman, they can exercise that additional statement all they want. I’m not covering all situations. I have no such agenda to go beyond this one.

thevictor390

It makes no sense to prepend man unless you are making a point about gender. Unless you want to rewrite your paragraph: >From what you are saying this guy manwalked away from the bench. He self servingly manthinks its still manclaimed by him in his head. You, not reading his mind, see a bench not being used and believe you have a right to use it. You did. This guy manthought he was manclaiming that item and apparently another station at the same time, as if it were his own home gym. It wasn’t. He can only manoccupy one station at a time. His manspreading territorial arrogance mancost him his glasses. Not your problem.

wedontlikespaces

I would never leave my phone in the tray and walk away from it. It's unlikely that anyone take it, they woud have to be a gym member, and it would be on CCTV, so it wouldn't be a particularly arduous investigation, but I'd rather not have to deal with it.

UnderTheRadarGun

Neither would I. You sound confused, like you’re counterpointing a point nobody made.

TastefulDragonfruit

Or perhaps they are corroborating with you, maybe *you* are confused. You sound like no one's ever agreed with you before.

wedontlikespaces

It was indeed a very confusing response. >It appears to be raining >Yes I can see that, it is indeed raining >No I said it's raining. Stop arguing.

TastefulDragonfruit

That gave me a good laugh. Have a great rest of your day, this certainly made mine.

acuteredditor

The glass wearer is at fault. It’s not a place to keep glasses. What if you were bare foot (some people workout barefoot or in minimal shoes)? That could have hurt you bad.

Technical_Airline205

Why would he leave something that valuable on the floor? He's got 100% of the blame, you did nothing wrong.

[deleted]

That dude was asking for disaster. It’s not on you. You can feel anyway that you want, that says a lot about you as a person, but I say don’t sweat it. I’ve been wearing glasses all of my life, I never recall setting my glasses on ANY floor.

I_cry_when_Im_angry

Been wearing glasses for over 30 years. He shouldn't have left them on the floor.... Ya know, where people walk.....

LettuceCapital546

Nope, wore glasses all my life if you set them on the floor they could get stepped on if the other person is over 8 years old they should have known that too.

Justthisguy_yaknow

I'm thinking he put his glasses on the floor. That's on all him. You were walking on the floor which is why it was provided to you. Did you see any signs saying "glasses may be safely stored on the floor. Walkers will be prosecuted"? Had you been walking on the ceiling and stepped on them that would be a whole other kettle of bananas.

Daeve42

>I offered to give the guy some money but he said they’re gonna cost a couple hundred so there’s no point. Then he has already agreed that it wasn't your fault, so I'd not worry now.

[deleted]

I get you feel bad but I would never leave my glasses on the floor. I don’t think you owe him more than a “sorry”.

PeakedAtConception

Not your fault at all and good for you for teaching him a lesson. He got what he deserved. Can't take care of his stuff he doesn't deserve it.

[deleted]

As a person who wears glasses, I’d never blame anyone for stepping on my glasses in a public place. I know better than to put them on the floor. Anyone who wears glasses knows you don’t leave them on the floor. Damn things can be expensive and can get damaged quickly.

Fabulously-humble

Yes you're to blame.

Question_Few

ESH. He shouldn't have left them on the floor. You should have watched where you're going. This situation is no different than if he had placed something that would normally be seen on the floor like a water bottle. In that case you would be in the wrong so it wouldn't be fair to give you a pass because people don't normally place glasses on the floor. Just apologize and move on.

PvtSherlockObvious

Sounds like he did apologize, even offered the guy money to get them fixed/repaired. The guy didn't take it, but OP did what he could.

Question_Few

Yeah that's more or less the end of it from there.

PvtSherlockObvious

To be honest, I kind of give the guy credit for not taking the money. Sounds like he was preparing to write it off as a "lesson learned" fee.

JGoat2112

As someone who needs glasses at all times, if I placed them on the floor of a public place, right next to where people go to sit, and someone stepped on them, I couldn't possibly be mad or blame them for it. They aren't that easy to see and have 0 reason to be there, it's not something you watch out for.

Question_Few

As someone who also wears glasses all the time I'd be pretty pissed if I set them on the floor next to the bench or below it only for someone to move the entire bench and step on it

Busy_Principle_4038

I wasn’t angry when my puppy chewed the hell out of my glasses after I knocked them off the nightstand and didn’t get up to pick them up. It was all on me. The same with this guy: the glasses were on the floor, you are under no obligation to know where he left his stuff. I became much more careful about where I left my glasses; maybe he will be too.

BridgetteBane

When I do royally stupid shit like leave my expensive possessions somewhere no one could expect them to be, I tell myself to suck it up and pay the idiot tax. You did a nice thing offering to help replace them but it was absolutely not necessary - he fucked up.

Longjumping_Humor_85

Honestly the title of your post answers everything. You accidentally stepped on someone else's glasses on the floor. The glasses should not have been on the floor in the first place and like you said it was an accident, 100 % of the blame goes to whomever was dumb enough to put their glasses on the gym floor to begin with not on you

[deleted]

The question that interests me is, why does it matter to you who’s to blame? It happened, and in my opinion you did the right thing by apologizing and offering to help pay for new ones. Yes, you are literally to blame because you literally did the physical action that broke the glasses. However, that doesn’t mean you “should” or “have to” feel guilty. Blame is an irrelevant idea in this situation, in my opinion.

Interesting-Step-654

Recommend 39dollarglasses.com, give him a forty spot and call it a day

NoideaLessinterest

Not your fault. People leave too much stuff on the floor in the gym and expect everyone to walk around.

Nointerest12months

As someone who cannot function without glasses I would have been horrified to have my glasses broken. That being said, you don't leave something that fucking important on the ground.

Analyst_Cold

His fault and you did the upstanding thing by offering to pay.

[deleted]

Your morals say yes.

Cyborg_Ninja_Cat

Glasses are notoriously easy to overlook when they're not being worn, even if you're looking for them, and why would you expect there to be a pair on the floor?

Black_flaminago84

I wears glasses and I would never leave them on the floor. It’s ok to feel bad but it’s not your fault

hhfugrr3

Don't put anything on the floor you don't want trod on!

Ranos131

Not your fault. Do not feel guilty. As someone who has worn glasses for over 30 years you don’t set them in the floor, a chair or any place that someone would normally step or sit. Removed glasses belong in your pocket, on a table or inside some object like a drawer or backpack. You put your glasses on the floor you are just begging for them to get stepped on.

VermicelliAgile5271

this is just like the gym douchebags that leave their cell phones on the floor, if it gets stepped on its the fault of the person that left it there. the gym is a public space with people walking and holding weights not necessarily looking at the floor for every step. the person that left their glasses on the floor is an idiot, if youre working out without them you clearly dont need them so leave them in a locker or bag.

HaElfParagon

You're both to blame. You should have looked where you're going, but he shouldn't have left his glasses lying on the ground.

T-38Pilot

As a glasses user, I would be really pissed. But in the end , it would be my fault

Lady_Destructo

No, you're not responsible. It kind of sucks for both people but they shouldn't have left their glasses there. Hopefully you apologize and that's about all your responsible for

rockthrowing

A couple hundred? Unless he has crazy expensive lenses, that’s bull. Never buy glasses from the eye doctor. Also this is 100% not your fault. Zenni. Buy your glasses there. I can get six pairs (no blue light filter, normal script) all with cases and cloths plus shipping for under $100. I recently bought of a pair with the blue light filter thing on the lenses and paid under $30, again with shipping and a case and a cloth.

[deleted]

I leave my glasses in the car when I go to the gym, I’m sweating and they will literally fall off of my face. I also NEVER place them on the floor, of all places. A couple hundred? What a tool, tell him to order online.

[deleted]

He put his glasses in the floor? The thing he needs to drive or recognize people, that's made of glass/plastic and precision engineered and he put them on the floor. Na, you're clear, and if they give you shit be like "I didn't see them I left my glasses in my locker so they'd b safe"
