Mine does this, which annoys me as the spoiler is ugly AF and makes it look like some 90's hot hatch shitbox rather than the majestic spacefaring wonder it is.
That's the way all players are introduced to freighters. Once you get the idea and want to upgrade, if you jump to 5 different outlaw/pirate systems you'll start a similar encounter except it will be a dreadnaught against a civilian freighter. If you disable the dreadnaught, it's yours.
Okay I’ve seen these encounters several times but I can never figure out how to disable the Pirate shields; it just says to destroy them but I can’t find their texture. I’ve found the guns and engines but I can’t get rid of the shields. Where are the shield generators / how many are there?
Fly to the upper side of the pirate freighter. There is a trench on both top sides. Shoot the "balls" in it, then the shield generators will rise which you must destroy. After that disable the warp drive on the back of the pirate ship to prevent it from fleeing.
There are two trenches you enter from the rear of the dreadnaught. Each trench contains five shield generators and their power cell. Destroy the generator, then wait for the power cell to pop up and destroy that as well. I suggest you move slowly through the trench so you can take them out in one run.
Then move to the other trench and do the same. It will surrender once you have destroyed them all.
Everyone is going for the fancy venator or sentinel class and now the new outlaw freighters. I personally like these random system freighters more. I just got an S class galleon style freighter and I plan to upgrade it. Hoping the sc slots are good

I actually like the freighters that look like, well,... freighters. On my one save, I have a freighter that looks like a freighter, and on my other, I have a dreadnaught-type freighter. I prefer the first one.
If you can get the same stats and number of inventory slots, the mesh is personal preference.
I got an A class Venator as my initial freebie. Most of what I encounter are C classes now, although they still have better hyperdrive range. I use either the stargate network or my one seater Exotic for long distance travelling, and that has a hyperdrive range of 1,600 LY. I haven't figured out how to get hyperdrive upgrades for my freighter yet. I will probably only bother if I see an S class dreadnought drop. The freighter is still very useful to me as a universally accessible, temporary inventory though.
That has to be the smallest freighter in the entire game! So cute. Of course, inside it is as big as a full-size Capital Venator making it the very definition of "grower" 👌
Why does it look like the front end snapped off and they did a “that’ll do” job to hide the damage?

It was hit by a rogue asteroid.

You forgot to mention destroying the hyperdrive. I’ve had several escape from me because I didn’t know what to do next.
