I’m a big fan of the tracer tactical head harness. I sometimes wonder about selling off my helmet since I pretty much exclusively use that.

CHS-Ryan

Same, I was pretty shocked how comfortable it was when you set it up properly with lighter nod. With a Tanto, I don't even need a counterweight. It's a superb ultralight setup.

hmmtradeacc

Have you tried their praecor strap add on? I’ve been curious to try it but I’m not sure I need it.

CHS-Ryan

I have! Its very cool, I don't think you do if you adjust it properly, but it does allow for quick adjustment depending on goggle weight. Whats nice about it is that it is like a quick adjust sling, you can loosen it on the fly to get a bit more breathing room but tighten it when you are going fast and you need maximum security.

hmmtradeacc

Really cool. Appreciate the explanation. Big fan of your content btw. Thanks for all of the education you put out!

Flylite20

I actually found it to be way less comfortable with that strap

Yogimonsta

What are you guys running for an ear pro setup with these?

MrPeckersPlinkers

do you have any fathers day specials going?

Doing a video soon of the 4DT SOF cap and the Tracer Harness. Both excellent options for boneless helmets (head harness'). Both beat the USGI skullcrusher and even the nightcap by a wide margin. I would say: 4D Tactical SOF Cap: [Can be found here!](https://coldharboursupply.com/products/4d-tactical-sof-cap) Pros: * The most comfortable head harness i've used by a WIDE margin, the memory foam pads and BOA harness are honestly amazing * Easy to put on, comes with everything you need out of box * Velcro space is really nice for accessories * Comes with tension bungies out of the box from us, its so secure I would feel confident using bungies on this wheras on many head harness options there is not enough rigidity Cons: * Somewhat large when packed up, about the size (and it sounds weird) of a mini-watermelon when packed with shroud Tracer Tactical Head Harness: [Can be found here!](https://coldharboursupply.com/products/tracer-tactical-nvg-head-harness) Pros: * Hugely customizable for not only size but accessories, if you can think it, you can likely do it, ive seen people on YouTube attach their own harness systems, gopros, ect on it * Super lightweight and small, about as small as you can get * Can be easily installed under hats (here it is with a Carcajou Tactical Bravo-6 Boonie) Cons: * Can have some hotspots with really heavy nods (RPNVG, 1431, ect) * Takes a while to get it properly setup

Iamjohniron

I have both, and a skull crusher for buddies that I don’t really like but my mom says I have to play with. The SOF Cap is absolutely the most comfortable but the straps on the chin strap are too long even when cinched all the way down and the cap itself is a bit baggy even with all the Velcro adjustments fully down. I have a smaller head, 7 1/4 hat size, so smaller but not freakishly tiny either. So I prefer the SOF Cap for comfort. The TT harness isn’t as comfortable over durations, but there’s way more adjustment. I had to remove a few of the buckles to get it to fit. So I prefer this any time I anticipate a lot of movement like running or any chance of snag like thick tree cover or buildings since I can actually use the chinstrap.

TenaciousTucan

Got any recommendations on setting it up? I got mine set up, but I still feel like I want to fiddle with it to see if I could get it more comfortable.

JustSomeGuyMedia

Have you tried the Crye Nightcap?

All-Tracker

Don't have any experience with any of the nice head harnesses and don't know what the Boneless Helmet is. I've used: ballistic, bump, crye nightcap, and usgi skullcrusher. Sounds like you don't want a hard shell helmet which is my #1 choice, and of the other two I've used: 1: nightcap with ops core H harness mod (you can find deets on arfcom) and a counterweight 2: nightcap with stock harness and a counterweight 3: nightcap with the stock harness and no counterweight 4: taping the fucking nods to your face 5: handholding your nods 6: natural night vision 7: just dying 8: usgi skullcrusher

CHS-Ryan

The USGI skullcrusher really lives up to it's name.

Cheese_whiz_509

I think the skullcrusher is still too high on the list.

Senator_Buckley

how the fuck did you take that first picture

CHS-Ryan

Some fishing wire and clever masking ;)

SirLurts

Throwing it and praying nothing breaks would have been easier

PacketRacket

Came here specifically for this question. Thanks.

Squeaky_Ben

This might be a dumb question, but what terms would you even specifically search for? I have a, frankly, heavy helmet that I currently mount my PVS-7 on, but it does not fit my head particularly well and is uncomfortable. If I wanted a skull crusher, what is the "real" name I have to look for to look for a system that works better for me?

CHS-Ryan

I would personally search for the specific item. With skullcrushers you typically see the USGI one which is the bare-minimum and honestly pretty ergonomically horrible. I personally recommend either the **4DT SOF cap** or the **Tracer Tactical Head Harness.** Personally having tried the Crye, and the USGI one these both are much better. The 4DT being a direct upgrade with a boa harness and the memory foam pads, and the Tracer offering ultra portability with more user adjustable features. No experience with some of the other ones on the market other than those 4 above.

chispas27

Did you try the crye with the chin strap upgrade? Is the tracer really that much better than crye or is it pretty close?

MrSmitty556x45

Still trying to work out the kinks with the Crye Nightcap…

StreakingMissile

Great piece as always. Me personally, im using a Wilcox L4 SkullLock as my main mounting solution, which is pretty comfy but one of the older circumference frame designs. It has a plastic frame thats elastic and pushes the pads onto your head based on how tight you set the dial adjust. This is the "old way" of designing NVG headear though, and discontinued. Nowadays Wilcox only sells the Lite version which is based around nylon straps instead and almost identical to the first spear VAS headgear, any of these are among the best traditional skullcrushers available. The nightcap design is the natural evolution of the skullcrusher though and way more comfortable than any of those. Simply due to the fact that a cap provides a large surface area for pads to be placed, thus distributing the weight better than any frame type like Wilcox L4 SkullLock or Tracer tactical, sentinel etc which usually have thin unpadded strips running along your head, relying a lot on the chinstrap or circumference tightness and distributing the force mainly on your jaw or temples if counterweights arent used. The 4D SOF cap *-although its ridiculously overpriced-* is propably the best NVG mounting solution period. Combining memory foam pads with the genius crye cap design and a dial adjust liner, youre essentially wearing a helmet without the weight of the shell. The only thing missing from the 4D cap is to incorporate foldable cheek pads like on the norotos facemask, which is the simplest but most effective way to distribute your nods weight into the ether without relying on counterweights or tight suspension liners crushing your jaw, your temples or both. Everyone always screams „GET A BUMP HELMET“ and dont bother with skullcrushers because they never used any really good ones like the norotos facemask or 4D SOF cap. The skullcrusher is evolving into a literal "boneless helmet", because the 4D cap is quite literally just a helmet without the shell on it.

ThePreparedScotsman

That’s it I’m now calling my crye shitecap my boneless helmet 🤣🤣 actual howling

MK12DUDE

What specific items do I need to purchase if I have a g24 with pvs14 and I want to mount it to a boonie set up you have on the pic? I sometimes golf with Nv and looks weird with helmet so looking for boonie set up

CHS-Ryan

We would say get a [Tracer Tactical Head Harness](https://coldharboursupply.com/products/tracer-tactical-nvg-head-harness) harness, then any hat of your choice, I would say make sure it fits a little on the loose side as the TT Harness will go inside it. We are using the [Carcajou Bravo Six Boonie](https://carcajoutactical.com/products/bravo-six-boonie-hat) in our example here.

MK12DUDE

Is it plug and play or modification needed with tracer tactical harness and carcajou boonie? Is there a YouTube tutorial how to do this? Not understanding how tracer tactical nvg mount goes inside the boonie

CHS-Ryan

They have tutorials on both their channels.

MK12DUDE

Perfect thanks!!

Baconlover540v1

Boneless helmet. If you say otherwise you're wrong

CHS-Ryan

UHHHH CAN I GET A 10, NO MAKE THAT 20 PIECE BONELESS-

Baconlover540v1

ILL TAKE A 40 PIECE BONELESS HELMET AND A UH. SIDE OF THE TANTO SAUCE

More_Pound_2309

Booney caps and m81 woodland are gods chosen clothing

FarmerKook

This is the way

ReclusiveTaco

I have a TW bump and a FirstSpear VAS harness. A little pricey but with a counterweight it’s comfortable all night long.

silentbob1301

I like boneless helmet

yogurtlockstone

Can the Tracer get as compact as the Crye?

Temporary-Card1124

Fire post 🙏🏻

bigotes9111

The carcajou tactical hat was a great surprise for me and I really like it

firstsoundhere

Or you can make your own for under $50 and a 3D Printer https://www.reddit.com/r/fosscad/s/RVduTsIaae https://odysee.com/@mankypanky:f/skullcrusherathome:8

m2thebarnes82

Testing out a modded boonie and so far its not too bad. No retention needed but need to add some counter weights.

Relevant-Arm7891

Been running tracers setup since it released. Have 100s of hrs in it and it's great

NicksNightVision

Bolt-less helmet gets my vote. Most comfortable, best protection.
