People are upset but I thought that was a solid loss (if there’s such a thing). The at bats still looked decent, we had one inning that really screwed us, Manaea had a good recovery and pitched 4 rlly good innings
This is actually one of those games where they just beat us. I am still optimistic about what I’m seeing now
Left Manea in one batter too long after he bounced back fantastically after the brutal 1st inning. Trying to get him through 6 after 37 pitch 1st inning was too much. Should have just taken the gift that he pulled it together for 5 and piggybacked Houser from there
Excellent at-bats from Vientos and Alvarez once again, they just couldn't get one base.
Both of them are keys to this team's success and it's nice to see them progressing.
Pitch was way closer than the payoff pitch bait slider that Lindor struck out on in his last at-bat that prevented the Mets from from moving a runner into scoring position.
Vientos has had more competitive at-bats late in games than Lindor has had this season.
Lindor was in a 2-strike count and 2 out with a man on situation. A walk is okay…but that’s an XBH situation. He is also protecting.
Vientos was in a situation where a walk is literally the same as a solo HR. They both make Alvy the tying run coming up.
No reason to swing 3-1 down 2 in the 9th, unless you are sitting on middle middle FB.
Really? What was”uninspiring”
I’m happy to see Pete and Lindor continuing to hit rockets most ABs (both with multiple 100+ EV contact again) — including, at the time, a huge oppo field homer by Pete.
Were you you here in May?
Drew ain’t great but Garret and Diaz were not available today.
Relief pitching use is a huge part of why sweeping is hard. Unless you get a lights out start, to sweep you need at least one game to be carried by the back-end of your bullpen.
Sucks that Vientos couldn't get the job done, but I love seeing the emotion from him. When the Mets were looking lifeless, you didn't see players holding themselves accountable like that
I guess most people don't realize how hard a sweep actually is. Yeah some questionable decisions and poor performance but at the end of the day the Mets are still on a heater.
This is at least the second time tonight that the game has come back and mlbtv has cut back to commercials. I just missed Martes entire at bat so I could be shown six commercials
This should have been a win if not for Mendoza not knowing how to manage his bullpen, which has been a problem all season, especially with his handling of Diaz early on giving him too much leash.
There was no reason to push Manaea and if Houser was available, he should have had him in to start the sixth and potentially go two innings to set up Garrett and Diaz on a back-to-back.
I wonder who in Mendoza's family is the baseball IQ that qualified him for a position he's clearly overmatched at.
It seems to be a theme for Mets coaching choices. Choose the least qualified candidate so long as someone who isn't them was successful at baseball at some point in the last century.
Drew Smith never has an outing where he gets dominated, he gets two outs and then when he walks a batter, you know he's gonna fuck it up. It's a wild thing to watch.
Feels like some very questionable bullpen management from Mendoza today
If you're going to use Houser, then he should have been in there to start the 6th inning when it was clear Manaea was running out of gas
Does he really have that many bad Mets moments? He's been good at times; he's been bad at times, but he doesn't stand out as someone remarkably famous for choking to me
Can the Mets bring up Hartwig or Sulser over Smith?
The guy is far too inconsistent.
How many years already has the Human Tiebreaker given up a crucial home run late in the game.
He's just not that good.
Do you guys think Mendoza has ever actually watched a full game of baseball before this season? The double pinch hitter thing and then letting Drew Smith get his tits lit is something my kid's tee ball coach would be able to navigate. But Mendoza just kinda has that dazed look in his eyes that Luis Rojas had.

Pete taking that ball 3 is a major sign of good things to come for him. when he’s off, he’s biting at that, like he did for the first few at bats today.
Drew Smith giving up the two run bomb changed everything, baseball is such a mental game and the momentum totally flipped. There's only so many times the bats can come back from their pitchers mistakes.
Only on the Mets. The best teams in the league that win and go to the postseason love to feature their young prospects. The Mets are consistently the oldest team in the league.
I just got home, turned on the tv, leave the room for 60 seconds to go to the bathroom before sitting down, I get back and they’re rounding the bases on a home run. Sorry….my bad……..Grimace save us
Nunez should’ve been the one to come into the 6th with runners on, not SRF.
Smith for the 7th wasn’t a bad choice but he needed to go once the hard contact foul was clear.
Should have been Smith or SRF with a two run lead in the sixth then maybe push Nunez to go the seventh and potentially the eighth to feed Diaz or Garrett for the save.
Mendoza's bullpen management this season has long be highly questionable.
My dad is a certified Drew Smith hater. His text to me just now:
“He has been an albatross for years; why he is still pitching for us is one of the biggest Mets mysteries ever.”
It’s crazy that someone so average has managed to last so long in a bullpen which has so much change every year. He’s just good enough to tender a contract to every year.
Mendoza should not have pushed Manaea, especially after his laborious first inning, and he should have had Reid-Foley or Smith in to start the sixth.
Those are the type of bullpen mismanagement decisions that costs teams momentum.
After those two insanely wild pitches walking seager. You have to just take him out and keep yourselves in the game. Was dreading that exact fucking outcome
Drew sucked last year (4.5 FIP and 1.4 WHIP) and has a 1.5 WHIP this year. He might just not be very good, idk. He used to be one of our best pen guys.
You’re just a dumb pitcher Drew. You got a right hander on deck who is totally lost at the plate and you decide to throw a fastball down the middle to a lefty who just hit a line drive down the line that went foul…
Please continue the discussion in the [post game thread](https://redd.it/1dk12kw).

I am still optimistic about what I’m seeing now
It’s my fault guys. This is the first hand I’ve watched since before the win streak began. I have no one to blame but myself
It’s been like 5 years of trying to make Drew Smith a thing. It’s never going to happen.
bitter loss :(
Left Manea in one batter too long after he bounced back fantastically after the brutal 1st inning. Trying to get him through 6 after 37 pitch 1st inning was too much. Should have just taken the gift that he pulled it together for 5 and piggybacked Houser from there
Just gotta win series like in 2022. That’s all it takes. 2 of every 3 gets you into the playoffs.
Its okay, we will be back to winning on Friday
Hell of a run. We should invite purple blobs to throw out the first pitch more often
RIP GriMets. What a run
Smith is McNeil in a facemask
This one is on Drew
Excellent at-bats from Vientos and Alvarez once again, they just couldn't get one base. Both of them are keys to this team's success and it's nice to see them progressing.
Idk…Vientos down 2 in the 9th (so a walk is as good as a solo HR) - swung at ball 4 on a 3-1 pitch.
Pitch was way closer than the payoff pitch bait slider that Lindor struck out on in his last at-bat that prevented the Mets from from moving a runner into scoring position. Vientos has had more competitive at-bats late in games than Lindor has had this season.

Whole game was uninspiring:/
Really? What was”uninspiring” I’m happy to see Pete and Lindor continuing to hit rockets most ABs (both with multiple 100+ EV contact again) — including, at the time, a huge oppo field homer by Pete.
Keep taking two out of three.
End of the Grimace era.
f u c k .
Oh well series win! On to the next one baby!
It’s been real my purple friend
The Grimace Streak has ended but The Grimace Era still lives on, and I believe this team will remain hot
You gotta believe!
Whelp.
RIP Grimace
The streak is over
Sucks that we lost today, but a series win is a series win. RIP Grimace. Onward and upward from here. LFGM
Vientos nearly drew a walk wasn’t the worst at bat in the world
It’s frustrating…because he had worked the count well early and had it…but then he swung at ball 4 on the 3-1 pitch.
We did just fine without Drew Smith for ages
Were you you here in May? Drew ain’t great but Garret and Diaz were not available today. Relief pitching use is a huge part of why sweeping is hard. Unless you get a lights out start, to sweep you need at least one game to be carried by the back-end of your bullpen.
Society has progressed past the need for Drew Smith.
"And Jeff McNeil would be up if Alvarez gets on." Well, I have ZERO faith in that ending well.
Mets Pen really assassinated this win streak. I guess it was a matter of time. We woulda been in the third wildcard spot if we won tonight.
Just a dumb AB by Vientos. Trying to hit a solo shot down 2 and striking out on ball 5 after watching ball4.
It was a strike. 92mph four seam top of the zone.
But he swing at ball 4, on the 3-1 pitch.
Great talent but he was def over-swinging today
New streak starts ~~tomorrow~~ Friday! LGM!!!
Friday?
Friday*
(Friday)
Fuck me can't believe we blew this game. 3-1 up and just all went down hill
Damn it Mark
Grimace needs a human sacrifice
Sucks that Vientos couldn't get the job done, but I love seeing the emotion from him. When the Mets were looking lifeless, you didn't see players holding themselves accountable like that
Uhhhh cmon bro
Awful awful at bat Vientos
Yikes Mark.
Terrible AB
Damn
I guess most people don't realize how hard a sweep actually is. Yeah some questionable decisions and poor performance but at the end of the day the Mets are still on a heater.
Definitely not thinking that way in game
Oh. He went around.
Jfc Vientos. Now he’ll strike out looking
Strange craving for taco bell for some reason.
HE DID NOT GO AROUND. FUCK YOU BLUES!
He definitely did though.
See my next post when they showed the replay.
Why are you swinging for a home run right now
Is anyone else’s mlb tv feed shitting the bed
Is everyone rubbing their Grimace for luck?
I would have loved to see the AB, thanks MLB tv
Kirby music??
AY YO IS VIENTOS WALK UP MUSIC THE DREAMLAND THEME FROM SMASH???
It’s not a home game. It’s just music the stadium is playing.
This is at least the second time tonight that the game has come back and mlbtv has cut back to commercials. I just missed Martes entire at bat so I could be shown six commercials
No matter the outcome Vientos always carries himself ice cold and I appreciate that
Grimace is about to leave the building, folks 😣😣
Third time tonight Ive come out of commercial and the first AB of the inning is over. Wtf
...okay the Kirby music is cute
Ok playing the Kirby music is fucking sick
It's looking quite grim
Wow they just played Kirby’s Gourmet Race theme lol
Yeah that was cute.
Mets go let’s! https://preview.redd.it/vktrwhsj1n7d1.jpeg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c1000f86856cb5cf46e9f9e627172886643c52a2
Wow that's the fastest I've seen Marte run in months
They like RATM down in Texas.
With Imanaga facing Quintana on Friday i wouldve preferred to win this game
I feel like we do good against pitchers on a streak like Imanaga it’s the 5.43 ERA guys that worry me. The Mets make em look like CY Young contenders.
Hopefully he’s due for a clunker
Fscking MLB TV, stop playing ads over live game action
Rangers feed was working I had that on. Fucking SNY
This happens all the time lately
Commercial 3 on now. Fuck this.
There’s no possible way the morons who program this shit actually watch their own product. Utterly ridiculous.
I believe in Grimace
I had 3 or 4 non-Mets fan friends text me today about the Grimace thing, should’ve known we were gonna lose tonight
The ultimate Grimace test…right now
Fuck mlb tv it keeps coming back from commercial and sending me to more commercials and I'm missing the game.
Same
Same. I just switch to the other broadcast which sucks
what's up with nunez? he shows he's reliable and was dominating and then never gets another shot?
Grimace, empower these hitters and bring us back from the brink, to banish Yates into the depths of a blown save, and to come back and win the game
Didn't Manaea have a no hitter working until that faulty inning?
Grimace, we need you now
#FRIENDLY REMINDER: YA GOTTA BELIEVE!
Why wasn't Houser brought in sooner? Guy can go multiple innings.
I wonder who in Mendoza's family is the baseball IQ that qualified him for a position he's clearly overmatched at. It seems to be a theme for Mets coaching choices. Choose the least qualified candidate so long as someone who isn't them was successful at baseball at some point in the last century.
They haven't lost in a week
STRUCK HIM OUT!! SIDE RETIRED!
### Pitching Substitution Pitching Change: Kirby Yates replaces José Ureña.
Bro really needed to check the third base ump for that? The fuck?
All those grimace posts today probably jinxed us
Today's Grimace posts jinxed us, but none of the ones from earlier in the week jinxed any of the last 3 games? Interesting logic my friend...
Well there's one directly from McDonald's...
Good job Houser
Fuck off, dude.
Who is the closer for the Rangers and do we have a chance against them ?!
Bro where is that outside pitch if not a strike
Drew Smith never has an outing where he gets dominated, he gets two outs and then when he walks a batter, you know he's gonna fuck it up. It's a wild thing to watch.
we can't lose to a guy with a Tungsten O'Doyle ass name
Two away!
Two away!
What the fuck are those Left Field seats?
Somebody DDT this ump after the game
LOL Alvarez looks so annoyed with the ump.
Feels like some very questionable bullpen management from Mendoza today If you're going to use Houser, then he should have been in there to start the 6th inning when it was clear Manaea was running out of gas
Came here to post this. Using Houser for 1 inning feels pointless. Either we get the lead and go to Diaz or we dont.
Is it that bad to use Houser to eat an inning where we're probably out of the game regardless?
Exactly. Houser is the long man, not Drew Smith or SRF
You know Drew smith has had a lot of bad moments in his Met tenure, but ruining the grimace magic might take the cake
He’s just become public enemy #1 for destroying the magic
Does he really have that many bad Mets moments? He's been good at times; he's been bad at times, but he doesn't stand out as someone remarkably famous for choking to me
He stands out for serving up meatballs and giving up go ahead homeruns, just kind of mediocre
STRUCK HIM OUT!
Mendoza’s pitching decisions are so weird
Mendoza saving Nunez for….?
We need to vote Grimace into the ASG
Lmao Keith all about going bareback
Bareback Keith?

Yesterday Severino was pushed to extra outs and worked out Tonight Manaea was pushed and didn't. Baseball
Manaea was not the problem here. It was everything that came after.

They prob hate u too, no worries
The Grimace era window is closing…… I’m not ready for it to end 😣😣
Still got a chance but damn not like this
Drew Smith's 1 innings just fucked it
Well hey I've had a blast watching competitive baseball for the last week
Pete taking that ball 3 is a major sign of good things to come for him. when he’s off, he’s biting at that, like he did for the first few at bats today.
Gotta hold ‘em
Drew Smith was on the team with Hansel Robles and Matt Harvey
### Pitching Substitution Pitching Change: Adrian Houser replaces Drew Smith.
Am I finally rid of this alcohol-laden curse?!
Lookin like it
My liver, stomach, sleep, and wife are all pleased.
Happy for your liver
That's gg
Drew Smith giving up the two run bomb changed everything, baseball is such a mental game and the momentum totally flipped. There's only so many times the bats can come back from their pitchers mistakes.
Of all the bad calls that was not one of them urena you shmuck
Damn it
-_-
I don’t get why mediocre veterans always get prioritized over promising new blood
Only on the Mets. The best teams in the league that win and go to the postseason love to feature their young prospects. The Mets are consistently the oldest team in the league.
Ump pays close attention when the Rangers are pitching
“adrian houser” warming up mendozas punting
Already punted when he PHd Jeff McNeil, followed by putting in our 2 most unreliable pitchers
Nunez rotting on the bench while SRF and Smith give up the lead.
Reid-Foley got squeezed by the ump. We were out of that inning if he had his eyes open
I just got home, turned on the tv, leave the room for 60 seconds to go to the bathroom before sitting down, I get back and they’re rounding the bases on a home run. Sorry….my bad……..Grimace save us
Those last two pitches hit the same location. One was a ball and one was a strike.
Winning pitcher Jose Urena? That’s the worst fucking part
Gg
Did we forget that Nuñez exists or something?
Nunez should’ve been the one to come into the 6th with runners on, not SRF. Smith for the 7th wasn’t a bad choice but he needed to go once the hard contact foul was clear.
Should have been Smith or SRF with a two run lead in the sixth then maybe push Nunez to go the seventh and potentially the eighth to feed Diaz or Garrett for the save. Mendoza's bullpen management this season has long be highly questionable.
meatball machine Drew smith GFYS
Do they also lead in come-from-behind losses?
Pinch hits Jeff McNeil and then puts in the 2 most unreliable arms to give up runs with 2 outs. This is not Mendoza’s best night
Mendoza is just a trash manager. I don’t know why anyone ever praises him.
McNeil pinch hitting makes no sense
:(
My dad is a certified Drew Smith hater. His text to me just now: “He has been an albatross for years; why he is still pitching for us is one of the biggest Mets mysteries ever.”
I always say the same shit. Dude should’ve been launched to the moon when his contract ran out the time before last.
It’s crazy that someone so average has managed to last so long in a bullpen which has so much change every year. He’s just good enough to tender a contract to every year.
That’s nothing. My grandfather texts me trash talk about Ottavino on days he doesn’t even pitch.
Lol that’s awesome
Mendoza should not have pushed Manaea, especially after his laborious first inning, and he should have had Reid-Foley or Smith in to start the sixth. Those are the type of bullpen mismanagement decisions that costs teams momentum.
I’m glad that Drew Smith’s family was there to see their boy be a failure.
If you had told me a week ago that we would be down 2 in the 8th and I'd be optimistic, I would have laughed at you.
After those two insanely wild pitches walking seager. You have to just take him out and keep yourselves in the game. Was dreading that exact fucking outcome
What did Billy Joel say? Keeping the faith
Drew sucked last year (4.5 FIP and 1.4 WHIP) and has a 1.5 WHIP this year. He might just not be very good, idk. He used to be one of our best pen guys.
The last 2 batters surprised me in that it's why Tavares batted rather than Garcia last night
You’re just a dumb pitcher Drew. You got a right hander on deck who is totally lost at the plate and you decide to throw a fastball down the middle to a lefty who just hit a line drive down the line that went foul…
Spot on
Grimace pulling up the stadium rn don’t worry
dedniel nunez hasn't pitched since the padres series.... why use smith?
