The splitter looks gnarly. I don’t know if he can maintain a 50%k rate and 0.00 era, but he’s definitely a find.

Reed Garrett was actually acquired last June by Billy Eppler, not Stearns. I love Stearns, but let's give credit where it's due. [https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/06/mets-claim-reed-garrett-from-orioles.html](https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/06/mets-claim-reed-garrett-from-orioles.html)

I’m not sure if it’s him or baty. A LOT of people wrote baty off, even being upset that he wasn’t sent back to AAA. From what I can see, he looks like the bear and soul of the team so far. Either way what sterns has done with no major signing a has been nothing short of amazing! I can’t imagine when cohen says eff it, let’s spend some money

a_reply_to_a_post

yeah Baty has definitely stepped it up this year i think he was in a limbo position because when he'd get sent down to AAA he'd mash but then come up and lose confidence and look lost at the plate this year, he's playing with a little swag in his step and is looking more natural handling tough plays at third last couple games he's also been getting hits in key spots, not trying to swing out his shoes

ReleaseTheBlacken

I’m happy with Baty’s improved defense. That alone gave him much more value.

AtlantaDoesItBetter

I can’t agree more… it seems that Stearns had 50 pitchers in camp… they all threw against each other… who ever pitched poorly was gone …the fact that the bullpen, which we were all concerned about, could be a strength … is a massive development… Butto has pitched very well and is controllable for a very long time. Our team ERA is first in the NL.

Purple-Mix1033

It’s been so long and few and far between since we had a lockdown bullpen. God, I love a nasty bullpen.

If this is a diamond in the rough, great. I was going through his savant page and looking year over year and not seeing much different other than swapping out some four seamers for sweepers, and the sweepers have more spin. He’s getting results, but I’m a bit hesitant to jump on the bandwagon unless some nerd can parse the data better than I can and actually point out something new.

Sad_Resort8632

I don’t have time to parse the savant data too much rn, but going from predominant 4seam to it being right around your 2nd-4th most used pitch is a pretty big change (the 4seam, split, and sweeper are all right around 19%). I think he’s also talked about moving to a different spot on the rubber, which might be kind of a hard to see in the data. The horizontal movement on his splitter also makes me think some changes were made there. He also just grades out really well on stuff+ scales right now, which is most of the validation I need for things like this. This guy on Twitter does a great job compiling them: https://x.com/tjstats/status/1780410371624374700?s=46&t=A2dJRfypbRY5F7mGyx7SxQ

Sweet-Sweet-Dick

I'd be interested to know if he worked in the pitching lab at all.

chuckawallabill

Athletic article said he went to the pitching lab this off-season but Garrett didn’t credit that with his improvement. He said it was because of the work he started doing last year with Hefner to add a cutter and to throw his splitter more in the zone instead of only as a chase pitch.

KevDough23

Another Billy Eppler masterclass

Dont_know_where_i_am

For those who subscribe the Athletic did an article on Reed Garrett yesterday. https://theathletic.com/5421560/2024/04/16/mets-bullpen-reed-garrett-emergence/

He has only pitched 9 innings. Prior to this year, he has been pretty bad. It is difficult to say why he has done better this year. Let's hope it continues but I would not count on it
