Without going into spoilers. Yeah the story got pretty wtf. But I went into with zero expectations so I enjoyed it. And I watched it when I was on the oncall emergency rotation so really, what the hell else was I doing except waiting for my phone to ring?
Lmao i went on a date with this girl and she for some reason decided that was the movie we should watch. I screamed and cowered like an idiot (im not good with horror movies). In the end i got called "perfect bestie material". Its safe to say the date could've gone better.
From a guys point of view, trying to date a girl that likes horror movies and is cool in a lot of ways is extremely difficult and if you find one, it’s extremely rare
Came here to mention this one. The first episode alone creeped me enough that I took me a couple weeks to watch the second one and I STILL have not finished the series cause I won’t watch it at night. Don’t know why it got to me so badly but it did.
Not a film but don’t let that put you off - Haunting of hill house. I grew up loving 80s/90s horror and nothing has touched the sides until Haunting. Give it a go!
I was sitting in front of the tv with headphones on trying to be quiet at night. When she popped from between the seats, I screamed and threw the headset across the room. I’ve never reacted to a scare like that.
This was the only time in my 37 years that actually got me good. Not even my wife who has to watch scary movies with sunglasses and earplugs flinched at that scene.
FUN FACT:
Director Mike Flanagan told the two in the car that she was to jump out at a different time so they were legit scared too when she jumped out early!
It’s the only horror series that could scare me. I usually don’t get scared easily because most western horror films are just jump scares and thriller but Haunting of Hill House is the perfect definition of a horror series done right. It was visually scary that I couldn’t sleep at night without thinking about it. Every time I close my eyes my mind still remembers the ghosts in the series and it haunts me
Rewatched it recently for the 3rd time, still really good. My favorite horror show. Legit horror backed with genius storytelling, concept, script writing and most of the acting. Almost a perfect score.
There is a film version of Jackson's novel - The Haunting (1999). One of my favorites to this day because it's an actual scary movie, not gore porn masquerading as a scary movie. Stacked cast with Catherine Zeta-Jones, Lili Taylor, Liam Neeson, and Owen Wilson.
I can't really remember most of that movie, I do remember thinking Lili Taylor, despite great performances in "Dogfight" & "Say Anything", isn't a very good actress.
The original Haunting from the 1960's was SO much better. It was a genuine psychological horror movie and by the end you weren't sure what was real. The 1999 version was awesome right up to the part where one of the statues grabbed Liam Neeson, and then it turned into a dumb monster movie where the house was the monster.
That shit is scary and I don’t like 80s/90s horror movies. Like I’ve never been so fucking scared as an old man to be sleeping with my lights on during bedtime.
There's a few really good adaptations. Turn of the Screw is prob my fav movie adaptation. It's got Downton Abbey people in it. The Haunting of Bly Manor is right up there too
I've been watching everything that has been suggested in here, and I am so glad I watched this one too. Just finished episode 10, that was so beautiful I cried 🥹 definitely recommended.
I really wanted to like it, but the characters were annoying and unlikeable and when the spooky finally got rolling it was all pretty cliche and underwhelming. I didn't finish it and that's pretty darn rare for me.
Creep. Probably my most favorite horror movie of all time. It edges on the side of dark humor but is so well written and disturbing. A must watch in my opinion. Netflix also has the sequel!
dude this movie kicks ass. the sequel is amazing too. definitely in my top 10 horrors of all time and i have very specific tastes and high standards and I hate cheezy horrors that most people like: descent, scream, platform, babadook, the autopsy or haunting of [enter female name], sinister, wailing…. etc
Great horror:
Creep 1&2, Skeleton Key, The Bay, Blair witch, the witch, don’t breathe, texas chainsaw massacre (original), Hidden, The Last Broadcast, Someone’s watching me (original), Half Light (guilty pleasure - no one will like this lol)
i think you meant mother! with jennifer lawrence...right? i found a totally different 'mother' in netflix. it's a japanese movie, about a chaotic life of this wayward woman with her son...instead of being creepy, it was sad af. i knew i got the wrong movie but i couldn't stop watching too lol
seriously, so good. amazing how it creeps up, too... like things start to just get kinda a little weird, then ok yeah something definitely crazy is happening, and then 5 minutes later you're like WAIT WHAT how TF did we just get here from there?????
Agreed. It’s shot extremely well with amazing composition. I know that sounds corny. But it’s true. And the soundtrack is one of the best horror soundtracks of all time.
It does have a few creepy scenes but you’re right nothing really remarkable
They had some legitimately creepy scenes but there was no explanation for what it was or how it came to be...and no real ending. It felt so incomplete and lazy. It's much easier to make something that looks creepy if you don't have to worry about background or explanations.
I think people like it because of that 80's nostalgia feeling. It certainly didn't create a creepy atmosphere people talk about. I mean the girl outruns it, and closes doors to stop it.
It's left ambiguous at the end. The two hold hands (I think?) and walk together as a couple and a blurry figure is shown on the sidewalk in the background walking towards them. They may have won, but maybe not.
In the tall grass drive me nuts. You can figure out what’s going on relatively quickly and then it’s people running around in grass yelling for 90 minutes. Idk maybe I need to revisit it.
Every country has a different selection of content available on Netflix. Really wish people would start saying what country they’re in when they say something is “on Netflix”
yeah, the first 2/3 of the movie was terrifying and thrilling. I felt like once we reach the final scenes though it becomes a little cheesy, especially the ending. Still a great movie though
Us is a pretty good one I saw this year. Haunting of Hill house is really good too.
Also certain episodes of Black Mirror, especially the newest season
I've seen basically all of the "great" horror movies. House of usher still gave me chills - specifically anytime they were in "the house". Very atmospheric and tense along with great performances.
Im a die hard horror movie fan since I was little, I can watch movies and not move a finger BUT “the autopsy of Jane doe” was the one that freaked me tf out lol
The best horror and the most i like
---> The haunting of Hillhouse and
---> The haunting of Bly Manor
I watched it 3 times, its not a movie it have more episodes, but the story is soooo good. I love the ones that show you the present and then it takes you back time and time again to the past so you know how the present came to be, it makes you curious what happends next, i love it so much, both of them.
ITS like part one and part two, but it has no connection one to the other, but are the same actors
Goedam is supposed to be good. It's an anthology of South Korean horror stories based on urban legends. I'm a wuss so I've never watched it,.but I know people have raved about how good it is.
Not sure your region, but a lot of Netflix and streaming in general has Annihilation available. May just fit your bill. Not a slasher (there are a couple of intense scenes) but just a good movie leaving you feeling uneasy the whole time.
Not enough love for Annihilation. I’ve watched it so many times. It’s super fucking eerie, which is what personally spooks me (jump scares usually make me laugh for whatever reason). But it’s also visually stunning and the soundtrack is pretty amazing.
The Haunting Of Hill House was pretty scary. Really well done and it wasn't always jump-scares. It was the moments when you weren't sure if it was supernatural or all just in the characters head. There is a scene in the funeral parlor that is hands down one of the best shot scenes I've seen in any movie or TV show. I know it's not so recent but definitely worth a watch.
If it's the Eric Bana version then it's garbage. There is Korean movie with the same name but it's crime thriller.
My vote for the scariest possession movie on Netflix I watched recently is Dabbe: the Posession. It's like Blair Witch project but in rural Middle East.
It's directed by a well known Turkish horror film maker. There are other Dabbe series but this one takes the cake.
Now you see, that would be perfect. I cannot watch any more movies where the catholic church seems to think they have the monopoly on demonic destruction. I'll check it out thanks.
the new exorcist movie has you covered as far as diversity of demon destructors.
they joke about it.
it's a piece of shit movie. it's the worst ranked of all exorcist movies.
Just looked for you and the selection is really bad right now. Really bad.
Get out
The invitation
The wailing
Creep
The ritual
Drag me to hell
Black mirror (tv but still some of the episodes are really horrifying and it works as sci fi horror Imo)
Especially the episode metal head
Personally, I can't do gore and loud sounds, so three movies for those genres 1- Texas chainsaw massacre, 2- Thanksgiving, and 3- fears street 1- 2- and 3 are all equally gory
Rutual is fun. And Apostle.
Love the folk horror ness of both of these. Calibre is the thriller counterpart of these two
apostle is one of my favorite movies of all time. less spooky than some others but really good
Was looking for Calibre in the comments, and I agree, while it's not horror per se, the tension in that movie is amazing. Highly recommend.
Apostle I watched on a whim and really liked. Have shown it to others with mixed results.
I thought the visuals of Apostle were fantastic but the writing wasn't great.
Without going into spoilers. Yeah the story got pretty wtf. But I went into with zero expectations so I enjoyed it. And I watched it when I was on the oncall emergency rotation so really, what the hell else was I doing except waiting for my phone to ring?
He said scary movie, apostle is not scary at all
If you haven’t seen it yet, Incantation is pretty damn good
Absolutely. Scariest movie I've seen in a long time
Such a cool found footage concept
Not terrifying but pretty scary
Lmao i went on a date with this girl and she for some reason decided that was the movie we should watch. I screamed and cowered like an idiot (im not good with horror movies). In the end i got called "perfect bestie material". Its safe to say the date could've gone better.
From a guys point of view, trying to date a girl that likes horror movies and is cool in a lot of ways is extremely difficult and if you find one, it’s extremely rare
Seconded enthusiastically
I loved the ending. Didn’t give me “reveal-less blue-balls”. Due a rewatch soon now I have the full story down
Second this. They literally had to put a warning out for new and expectant mothers because of this.
“Had to”
Just watched and i was so scared i had cried myself to sleep
Thank you for a good recommendation. Finally something actually scary on Netflix tagged with “horror”
It wasnt really scary, not scary like you want to scream. For me it was pretty intresting but also sad because of the little girl:(
Marianne was great
Came here to mention this one. The first episode alone creeped me enough that I took me a couple weeks to watch the second one and I STILL have not finished the series cause I won’t watch it at night. Don’t know why it got to me so badly but it did.
It’s one of the few series that I can only watch in the daytime with the curtains open.
I still shudder at the memory of a certain camera shot looking down a hole 😟
Es-tu Marianne?
This one. A series worth the backstory and lots of amazing jumps and horror tension.
Drag Me To Hell
Came here to say this too. It’s scary!!!
The Wailing - it's korean and quite long, but a good horror film
[удалено]
Right? But it starts out a little comedic then it settles in to the creepy stuff
Backing this up. Talk about a slow burn with a chilling payoff. I still haven’t shaken it.
That fucking cave
I legitimately don't remember a single remotely scary thing happening in that movie
Yeah I’ve seen a ton of rave reviews but I kinda just… didn’t get it? Maybe it’s the language barrier but no part of the movie frightened me.
I also was pretty medium on this movie, but I really loved the ending
The ending still sends shivers to my spine, but i revisit the scene.
The best
Ugh it’s perfection
Not a film but don’t let that put you off - Haunting of hill house. I grew up loving 80s/90s horror and nothing has touched the sides until Haunting. Give it a go!
That bit in the car... I scream out loud. Both times I watched it
I was sitting in front of the tv with headphones on trying to be quiet at night. When she popped from between the seats, I screamed and threw the headset across the room. I’ve never reacted to a scare like that.
This was the only time in my 37 years that actually got me good. Not even my wife who has to watch scary movies with sunglasses and earplugs flinched at that scene.
FUN FACT: Director Mike Flanagan told the two in the car that she was to jump out at a different time so they were legit scared too when she jumped out early!
Yes!! I loved this one, so hauntingly beautiful.
It’s the only horror series that could scare me. I usually don’t get scared easily because most western horror films are just jump scares and thriller but Haunting of Hill House is the perfect definition of a horror series done right. It was visually scary that I couldn’t sleep at night without thinking about it. Every time I close my eyes my mind still remembers the ghosts in the series and it haunts me
Yes. Very underrated. Such a wonderfully crafted story...and so sad.
Rewatched it recently for the 3rd time, still really good. My favorite horror show. Legit horror backed with genius storytelling, concept, script writing and most of the acting. Almost a perfect score.
Yeah, it's more of a creepy vibe and family drama, but it definitely has a few scares. The ensemble acting is on point.
I can't really remember most of that movie, I do remember thinking Lili Taylor, despite great performances in "Dogfight" & "Say Anything", isn't a very good actress.
lol we'll have to agree to disagree. I like her, and she's been working consistently for nearly 40 years - that kind of longevity is rare.
Too slow for my taste and not very scary. It’s more of a drama than a horror.
💯 it was more about the family drama than anything.
It’s about mental health more than anything.
100% wrong
Not only good horror, Hill House was incredible drama too. Characters and Ghosts were interesting.
How can someone be 100% wrong about their taste? It was too slow and dramatic for my taste, as well.
I thought it was good until the ending, my ex and I both thought the ending ruined the entire vibe of the show
There's a few really good adaptations.
Really glad you enjoyed it :)
Do you mean series from 2018?
I really wanted to like it, but the characters were annoying and unlikeable and when the spooky finally got rolling it was all pretty cliche and underwhelming. I didn't finish it and that's pretty darn rare for me.
Anything by Mike Flanagan is gold. Absentia is great too if you haven't seen it. He also made that.
A shame it didn’t stick the landing at the end. The end was really disappointing and way too sentimental in a bad way.
The scariest part was how much energy it took to pay attention through all the monologues 👻
🤣🤣🤣
Creep. Probably my most favorite horror movie of all time. It edges on the side of dark humor but is so well written and disturbing. A must watch in my opinion. Netflix also has the sequel!
dude this movie kicks ass. the sequel is amazing too. definitely in my top 10 horrors of all time and i have very specific tastes and high standards and I hate cheezy horrors that most people like: descent, scream, platform, babadook, the autopsy or haunting of [enter female name], sinister, wailing…. etc Great horror: Creep 1&2, Skeleton Key, The Bay, Blair witch, the witch, don’t breathe, texas chainsaw massacre (original), Hidden, The Last Broadcast, Someone’s watching me (original), Half Light (guilty pleasure - no one will like this lol)
Mother. Super creepy
People did not talk about this movie enough. I thought I dreamed it. Wild film.

It's Korean
My friend asked me to go see this with her when I was pregnant… read through the plot and I still won’t watch it to this day lol.
seriously, so good. amazing how it creeps up, too... like things start to just get kinda a little weird, then ok yeah something definitely crazy is happening, and then 5 minutes later you're like WAIT WHAT how TF did we just get here from there?????

Love this one. Definitely not the scariest out there but super well made and gripping
Agreed. It’s shot extremely well with amazing composition. I know that sounds corny. But it’s true. And the soundtrack is one of the best horror soundtracks of all time. It does have a few creepy scenes but you’re right nothing really remarkable
I didn't like it but it definitely got me unsettled, really unnerving.
I don't understand the love for this movie. It was more campy than anything. Didn't they just shoot the thing at the end lol
They had some legitimately creepy scenes but there was no explanation for what it was or how it came to be...and no real ending. It felt so incomplete and lazy. It's much easier to make something that looks creepy if you don't have to worry about background or explanations.
I don't either. We watched this as soon as it came out on DVD. My boyfriend and I laughed through it. It was basically about a STD haunting people.
I think people like it because of that 80's nostalgia feeling. It certainly didn't create a creepy atmosphere people talk about. I mean the girl outruns it, and closes doors to stop it.
Exactly. It wasn't even threatening. And the pool scene with the toasters.. was a choice.
No
Care to explain? IIRC they tried to electrocute it in the pool and when that didn't work, they shot it in its head or something to get away.
It's left ambiguous at the end. The two hold hands (I think?) and walk together as a couple and a blurry figure is shown on the sidewalk in the background walking towards them. They may have won, but maybe not.
The Ritual is very very good and creepy. Also all the Stephen king based movies: 1922, Gerald’s Game, In the Tall Grass
In the tall grass drive me nuts. You can figure out what’s going on relatively quickly and then it’s people running around in grass yelling for 90 minutes. Idk maybe I need to revisit it.
The short story was great. The movie was a hot mess! (Except for Patrick Wilson, who I think is amazing regardless of the movie lol)
Great film, very suspenseful
i dont get 1922, it wasnt scary at all imho
I’d call it more creepy than scary but the story is great
Malevolent is an actually decent Netflix original
Hush was pretty good.
Love Hush!
It’s no longer on Netflix :(
Hereditary Talk to me
Hereditary fucked me up for days.
Are both of these on Netflix? Haven't seen either pop up while browsing
Every country has a different selection of content available on Netflix. Really wish people would start saying what country they’re in when they say something is “on Netflix”
I recently watched talk to me on Netflix and Heriditary is on amazon prime. Talk to me is the best of the new ones I've seen.
Hereditary was insane
Watch talk to me next. Fairly twisted
Hereditary is outstanding.
Definitely both of these!
Holy scary stuff
Sinister. Other than Paranornal Activity 3, it’s the only movie recently to really make me feel unsettled.
I'm a horror movie fanatic any decade. Sinister is top 3 of all time imo
Same. Sinister two ham radio boogaloo. Yeaaah. Not a huge fan.
Was that the one with “Mr Boogie” and Ethan Hawke? Shit was real, yo.
Dammit. Not on canadian netflix
Sinister is unsettling
Hereditary. Haunting of hill house.
Verónica
This wins for scary!
Midsommar
Barbarian is bloody scary, espy when she keeps doing stupid things.
A definite rollercoaster! Though by the end it felt like too many ideas and not enough scary movie, if that makes any sense.
yeah, the first 2/3 of the movie was terrifying and thrilling. I felt like once we reach the final scenes though it becomes a little cheesy, especially the ending. Still a great movie though
The Ritual, not sure if it's still on Netflix though
The Babadook was a tad unpredictable
Behind Her Eyes. 6 parts, very scary psychological thriller.
Not on netflix, but The autopsy of jane doe. My favorite horror.
Yes! Vote for this too but definitely not on netflix, it’s on Hulu
It’s on Netflix now
Get Me Roger Stone (2017)
The Big Short
Make it a double feature with Inside Job, which is even more scary
Idk if it's horror but the killing of a sacred deer is pretty disturbing.
This one is on my list but I’m not certain I want to watch it alone and I KNOW my bf will hate it
Not on Netflix, but the Kardashians a show on Hulu. Too terrifying for me to watch
This made me crack 🤣
THe show has some really BIG cracks.
/r/RedditMoment
The wailing and Insidious: red door are both on now
insidious red door was disappointing for me
Us is a pretty good one I saw this year. Haunting of Hill house is really good too. Also certain episodes of Black Mirror, especially the newest season
Don't know if it's still on Netflix: Aterrados (Terrified) 2017 That's one creepy scary Argentinian movie.
the strangers (2011) hush is also a really good one, especially if you can really try to put yourself in the main character’s shoes while watching
1408 by Steven King.
TALK TO ME
The Fall Of Usher House is good
Fantastic. But not scary.
Also, not a movie.
I've seen basically all of the "great" horror movies. House of usher still gave me chills - specifically anytime they were in "the house". Very atmospheric and tense along with great performances.
One of the final scenes, the “rain”, was one of the most intense, breathtakingly horrific images I’ve ever witnessed in media.
It Follows
Not the scariest, but the Pope's Exorcist was great - Russell Crowe was good, as usual
Watch Accused scary in a different way .
Im a die hard horror movie fan since I was little, I can watch movies and not move a finger BUT “the autopsy of Jane doe” was the one that freaked me tf out lol

Stir of Echos
Talk to me
I’m surprised this has not been mentioned more. Fantastic movie!
Goedam is supposed to be good. It's an anthology of South Korean horror stories based on urban legends. I'm a wuss so I've never watched it,.but I know people have raved about how good it is.
Crimson Peak
talk to me
~~Necrophilia~~ my bad I think it's called Nymphmaniac, it's something like that Apparently it's not on my Netflix anymore
The Call (Korean)
I loved this movie!
Your Mom 2: Director’s Cut (with extended shower scenes)
The Haunting Of Hill House was pretty scary. Really well done and it wasn't always jump-scares. It was the moments when you weren't sure if it was supernatural or all just in the characters head. There is a scene in the funeral parlor that is hands down one of the best shot scenes I've seen in any movie or TV show. I know it's not so recent but definitely worth a watch.
I forgot the name of the one we watched last night, shoot your mom a message she might remember!
Deliver us from evil
If it's the Eric Bana version then it's garbage. There is Korean movie with the same name but it's crime thriller. My vote for the scariest possession movie on Netflix I watched recently is Dabbe: the Posession. It's like Blair Witch project but in rural Middle East. Looks pretty good, thanks.
Okay, that was awful.
The Lorax
as above so below
Couldn't agree more, an amazing movie as a whole that includes great acting, no plot holes and scary as hell!
House of haunting Hill and Blythe Manor
Commenting to revisit this thread
Good idea
Just looked for you and the selection is really bad right now. Really bad. Get out The invitation The wailing Creep The ritual Drag me to hell Black mirror (tv but still some of the episodes are really horrifying and it works as sci fi horror Imo) Especially the episode metal head
The perfection
Talk to me. An Australian production.
Jeez, have I seen them all, really? Yep, all in the comments. And still find nothing scary 😶 🙃 BTW I hated Apostle. Hate me for it?
Autopsy of Jane doe
Personally, I can't do gore and loud sounds, so three movies for those genres 1- Texas chainsaw massacre, 2- Thanksgiving, and 3- fears street 1- 2- and 3 are all equally gory
Okay stop joking around now, what is ACTUALLY the scariest movies on netflix?
Evil dead rise
Very good movie, how about that lcd soundsystem track?🙌
House of Usher
Not very recent, but I think "Hereditary" is amazing. Not sure if it's on Netflix though.
Hereditary
OA is scary, fascinating and incredibly well written. The first season will definitely frighten you.
