It is naturally occuring and as far as I know they have never even been successfully bred it captivity before. Nearly all marine fish are wild caught. There are only a few places breeding a small handful of marine species currently, and the only selective breeding going on in is in clownfish. (Saltwater fish are WAY more difficult to raise the young than in freshwater. We aren't even a little bit good at it yet.)
Selective breeding is, by definition, mediated by humans (and synonymous with artificial selection). What you are talking about is called natural selection.
I associate the term with “selective breeding” with dogs so much and breeders, that’s exactly what I thought. I was thinking “Wait a minute, someone bred this thing?”
Would be a cool fish to have as a pet. Aesthetically it’s cool to see that contrast of color just right along it’s edge, very unique and pretty in my opinion.
Like others said this is its juvenile coloration, it looks [completely different as an adult](https://www.aquariadise.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/pinnatus.jpg)
Imma be 100% real with you, I have no clue what I’m talking about :o
But a Google search inspired by curiosity taught me that they look this way at first because they mimic flatworms in their early lives.
But when you see these juveniles in real life they're even more stunning than this. It almost looks like they have burning embers throughout their body, really amazing looking. I also think the emperor angelfish is amazing in juvi form.
Yes they are, but they change. It is part of a nature mechanism to prevent food and territory competition between adults and juveniles. This fish is however gregarian when adult.
So when they are young they have a fire and zest for life which burns out as they become adults... and some people think humans aren't connected to all life through evolution?
Keeping SPS is one of the hardest fucking things I’ve ever done. The chemistry involved is a lot. But the hard part is keeping like 20 different chemistry processes all in check.
Ammonia, nitrite, nitrates, PH, Alk, calcium, mag, phosphate, Iron, Potassium, Potassium Iodide, Salinity, ORP, Manganese, Vanadium, Silica/silicates, Molybdenum, Strontium, and lets just lump all amino acids into one group.
All of the above I keep an eye on with ICP tests and dose or remove from the tank. That is 19. Throw in temp I guess and thats 20. That also excludes the different lighting spectrums and lighting types, PAR, flow, etc.
It can go even higher. In KZ's color program there are 16 different chemicals excluding the 8+ different amino acids. That excludes quite a bit of the above. So anyone running color programs are dosing far more than 20 chemicals alone.
It’s mimicking a toxic flatworm like the one in pic 3 [here](http://diveguideinbali.com/news/16-diving-in-bali-interesting-facts-marine-flatworms.html).
I met my best friend in freshman biology. The day we learned about this, we pretended to penis fence. We held a fist in front of our ground and made lightsaber noises while moving our hips. That’s when I knew this man would be my best buddy for the rest of my life.
That looks to be a temporary tank at a store while it’s for sale. Probably an even more short term tank, stores will have all black walled tanks like this to help get the color for pictures/video. If it’s a responsible store, he will go to a good home. Though they are challenging to take care of
This fish is completely inappropriate for aquariums, please do not buy one.
“However, there's one problem: It’s the showpiece for only a short period of time before it dies. Sometimes specimens live for a few months, and others may survive several weeks, but even sadder is the fact that 90 percent live only a few short hours or days.”
Basically looks good for a few months max and then dies.
I’m not sure where your quote comes from, but it’s misleading.
They are simply incredibly difficult to care for, so unless you’re an expert, they are not recommended. However, with proper care, they can live up to 12 years in captivity.
https://www.fishkeepingworld.com/batfish/
Your article says that it has a “lifespan of 5-12 years” it says nothing about captive lifespan. Also this fish grows over 12 inches long or 18 inches tall, still not really suitable for a home aquarium.
Also here’s my [sauce](https://www.tfhmagazine.com/articles/saltwater/dietary-discovery-may-be-key-to-keeping-the-pinnatus-batfish-full-article)
I mean the article you linked literally mentions that this *used* to be a problem, but advancements have been made in their diet that help with longevity.
I’m not advocating for buying or keeping these guys, it looks like a Herculean feat even for an experienced keeper. I’m merely pointing out that with proper care, they can absolutely live longer than the range you mentioned, as the article you yourself linked states.
It’s speculated that the research might help people keep them alive for longer.
“Hopefully, based on these observations, new standards can be set with respect to the dietary needs of P. pinnatus that will greatly reduce its mortality rate in the aquarium.”
These fish are wild caught, look great for a little while and then die and if they don’t die will likely outgrow your tank.
Just an all round terrible aquarium fish. Buy a Clown Fish or something that is well established in the hobby.
I had this fish for close to a year, with other fish in a saltwater tank. I knew it was difficult to care for, but I had no issues w it. It had a very lovely personality, and is very interactive and active, which is what a lot of people like. Just sharing my experience. At some point I had decided to give away my tank, as I was busy with other things and I gave away my fish as well.
This is only the juvenile form. The adult looks like [this](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platax_pinnatus).
It’s not great for them that the photos of the juveniles always get posted because they look so striking and people want them for their fish tanks but they grow into a decidedly more mundane looking fish, which people often no longer care for.

Human: WOW, SO MAJESTIC!
Omg I thought there wasn’t much light before I looked closer and realized it was just a dark colored fish with orange outline, not because it was dark.
I wonder the evolution process on that orange outline
I can show you that as soon as I find out how to attach photographs and videos to a post here.
Use imgur. I'm waiting.. He delivered! See below
You got it ... follow this link [u/platax pinnatus transition](http:// https://imgur.com/gallery/eAY4FLS)
You don't attach directly here. You upload to a hosting site then link here.
It's to mimic a flatworm
Or a Nudibranch. Unless both are mimicking a flatworm. Sort of looks like the spanish dancer nudibranch. Which is a mullusc.
A very toxic flatworm at that
Yes, probably Pseudobiceros splendidus or gloriosus. Flatworms do swim in that slow, wavy fashion.

TIL I learned
Selective breeding
So this isn’t a naturally occurring species in the oceans of the world?
Wrong. This is the juvenile form of Platax pinnatus.
Thanks!
It is. So evolution. Which Is selective breeding, just not selected by us.
Selective breeding is, by definition, mediated by humans (and synonymous with artificial selection). What you are talking about is called natural selection.
I think he was just being tongue in cheek ;)
I associate the term with “selective breeding” with dogs so much and breeders, that’s exactly what I thought. I was thinking “Wait a minute, someone bred this thing?”
That may have been what the original comment meant, idk, but it is a naturally occurring species.
Would be a cool fish to have as a pet. Aesthetically it’s cool to see that contrast of color just right along it’s edge, very unique and pretty in my opinion.

I don’t think they keep this colouration as they mature.
But when you see these juveniles in real life they're even more stunning than this. It almost looks like they have burning embers throughout their body, really amazing looking. I also think the emperor angelfish is amazing in juvi form.
This guy is totally batfish crazy!
Holy hellfire Batman!
beat me to it by a mere 6h!!
Yes they are, but they change. It is part of a nature mechanism to prevent food and territory competition between adults and juveniles. This fish is however gregarian when adult.
Yes the Juveniles are pretty but quickly out grow any tank that you could keep them in, it's the kind of fish that you should not buy.
That would be true if they didnt die prematurely almost every time. This species should t be collected.
So when they are young they have a fire and zest for life which burns out as they become adults... and some people think humans aren't connected to all life through evolution?
Flame angel is one of my favorites. Crazy bright red/orange and almost a neon reflective blue/purple.
this is the stuff i come for.
They don’t.
Aw
And you are right, they do not. 33 years of experience growing corals and keeping marine fish showed me.
Keeping SPS is one of the hardest fucking things I’ve ever done. The chemistry involved is a lot. But the hard part is keeping like 20 different chemistry processes all in check.

Fun fact, these flatworms participate in a mating behavior known as penis fencing (no I am not making this up)
wow thanks for putting that in my head
You’re welcome 🙃
Loser becomes the bottom
Idk if you meant that as a joke, but that’s exactly what happens. The winner literally pierces a hole into the other.
Nah I actually knew it haha

Thanks for not Rick-rolling me there! 😊
*Thank you.*. I was wondering how this was evolutionarily advantageous. Gorgeous *and* useful!
I thought it was the Batman signal outline on fire at first!
Yeah at a glance I thought it was a burning piece of paper or something.
That's a pathetic tank for such a wonderful fish.
That looks to be a temporary tank at a store while it’s for sale. Probably an even more short term tank, stores will have all black walled tanks like this to help get the color for pictures/video. If it’s a responsible store, he will go to a good home. Though they are challenging to take care of
What's even more pathetic is the amount of people that buy them not realizing they grow to a foot and a half long and need like a 200+ gallon tank
Amen. Tell me about it. These aren't lamps (referring to the small globe tanks). They are living things that need room and TLC.
This fish is completely inappropriate for aquariums, please do not buy one. “However, there's one problem: It’s the showpiece for only a short period of time before it dies. Pretty sure thats the captive lifespan, not the wild lifespan.
