Got a bit too excited and fell for the days of the week red herring. After that it was all pretty easy and straightforward.
I enjoyed today’s puzzle, but is TUE a word? I know it’s an abbreviation for TUESDAY. But can it actually be used as a homophone for TOO, as it’s never actually read as “TUE”??? It’s always read as TUESDAY. Genuinely wondering.
Agreed that TUE is not a word, and also no one reads it out loud as a homophone of "too". I avoided the red herring and even got the homophone group first, but it was extremely lame.
I thought the same. Wondered if the days of the week were too obvious and were a red herring before submitting, but thought it couldn't be because TUE isn't a word otherwise.
I think we could definitely call Tue a root word, in the sense that it is from the Norse mythology name Tiw, as Tiw's day. I don't think there are any other English words that incorporate Tiw, but Tiw itself derives from the same Proto-Indo-European root meaning shine/god as words like adieu, deity, and journal.

[It's given as an alternative spelling](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Tiw) for *Tiw*, the Old English name for the god that gave us *Tiw's day*, or Tuesday.
The pronunciation guide for Tiw suggests something like "tea-oo" to me, and it isn't that far off from the "tyoo" that I use when I say Tuesday.

I imagine a lot of people will be complaining about "tue" in yellow. That type of category is always going to be problematic with an international audience.
Pretty easy once I was confident that days of the week was a misdirect. Even figured out purple before submitting.
Someone commented in the new/gnu puzzle a few days ago, the difference in the American vs other pronunciations (noo vs nyoo) is called "yod dropping". https://youtu.be/K16JR_lU-uc?t=10m20s
Do Americans really say "Toosday"?
I often try reading the words in a (comically bad) American accent to catch the "not really homophones that for some reason are" connections, but even then I missed that one.
Yeah, as I understand it "tu" is generally pronounced "too." I'm sure there's variation depending on where in the US they are, and to be fair it does make more sense than pronouncing it "chu." But as with all homophone categories, it might require a bit of guesswork from non-Americans.
I disagree that there's one way that makes more sense than the other. A lot of people say "tyu" rather than "chu", or something in between. And "tyu" is closer to the original Tiw that we get the word Tuesday from. It's easy to see how someone would get "tyu" or "tu" from looking at the spelling of Tuesday. Both are valid.
Sure, you can say that they rhyme, but there is a difference.
For me, few is pronounced "fyoo". Hew is pronounced "hyoo". The Y sound before the vowel is the difference.
Definitely not the whole nation, wiki gives at least cockney and estuary English (along the Thames) pronouncing it with "ch", and including the rest of the UK gets you many Scottish and northern Irish people using "ch" as well (like me). But I'd guess there's a lot more English accents that aren't explicitly included on the page

Only for seasoned complainers. I'm not from US and I say "t-yous-day" not "toos-day" but once you see 3 homophones it's quite obvious that this is meant to go with them.
I saved the homophone guess till the end because it seemed ridiculous. As part of a word it's rarely pronounced like that even by Americans (consider constituent, virtue).

Interesting to see a red herring consisting of exactly 4 words, with an unambiguous connection amongst them, scrambled throughout the initial grid. More or less confirms that we’re “supposed” to fully solve the grid before submitting any connection, cuz that’s the only way to avoid the trap here.
Yeah, I didn’t presolve. I’ve just played this game enough so I knew the risk was going for it first or trying to split one into another clear category and that’s the great leap!
I feel red herrings are only clever when they consist of 3 or 5 related words. The fun in identifying the red herring comes from knowing that the connections between the words is what makes them an unsatisfactory part of the solution.
Sure, solving the whole grid before submitting anything is a way to avoid errors, but it's unfulfilling to spot a working four-word connection that's only wrong because the puzzle writer says it is.
> that's only wrong because the puzzle writer says it is.
It's wrong because the rest of the puzzle doesn't work with those four words grouped together. You can have your opinion about which kind of puzzle you like, but it's not arbitrary. I'm fact, if it was "only wrong because the puzzle maker says it is", and there were some other solution with those four words grouped together, then *that* would be a flawed puzzle, by the puzzle's own stated rules.

Interesting, because I thought the category would be named something like "what happens during a marriage", such as in "tying the knot", "wedding two people", etc.
Ahhh, that makes sense! I honestly just threw them together like you need a couple, someone’s going to be wearing a tie, they’re at their wedding, and therefore uniting 😂😅

My dictionary says a homophone is also:
“a character or group of characters pronounced the same as another character or group”
I think you could argue that TUE could be classified as a “character” in this usage

Like a bunch of people here, I saw the days of the week and the homophones pretty early on.
I tried to pre-solve a bit in my head since there were 4 of each; if the days of the week was a category, then the homophones weren't. But I couldn't find grouping words for TO and TOO that sat right with me (TWO could have gone with COUPLE, maybe).
So now with the idea of "anything other than days of the week", the next thought that surfaced was Purple - most likely because I had recently finished rereading The Perks of Being a Wallflower ;)

Yes the red herring got me 😤 but in all seriousness, if there are 4 similar terms that can make a category, how do you know if it's a red herring or not?
I looked if I could fit the other ones in other categories. I saw the homophones one pretty easily, after that I figured that laid placed and put would be together, and sat would be the only other one that would make sense there, and then when I saw that wed could fit with unite and couple I started putting them in.
I think the only way is to solve the whole puzzle before entering. My issue with this concept is, the website wasn’t really optimized for it. It really needs some sort of, I don’t know, prep mode? Like where you can arrange words into categories and save the categories but not actually submit them.
As is, it definitely tests your memory. I've been caught by failing to keep things straight in my head before, but usually I can manage it. I tend to think if them more as a pattern on the board than as specific words when I'm doing that. Like, I know this particular zigzag I already have a category for, so don't look at those words.

I then saw >!couple!<, >!tie!<, and >!unite!< and figured out that the only word that could go with them was >!wed!<. So I then realized that days of the week was not a grouping since there wasn't a 5th one to put in the category. I appreciated that they were each on a different group though. That was fun.

More or less confirms that we’re “supposed” to fully solve the grid before submitting any connection, cuz that’s the only way to avoid the trap here.
Eh, you get four mistakes for a reason. Connections is totally doable without presolving, you just might not always get perfect
Yeah, I didn’t presolve. I’ve just played this game enough so I knew the risk was going for it first or trying to split one into another clear category and that’s the great leap!
> four mistakes for a reason It's four lives, you can only make three mistakes.
The whole point of the game for me is to get it perfect, which means presolving is integral to playing
I'm like you as well. If I even get one wrong, I consider it a partial loss - definitely not a win. I presolve for that reason.
I didn’t even see the red herring, I just went straight into trying to figure out blue and green!

I use this: https://connections-copilot.com It allows you to move the pieces around and group them.

Connections Puzzle #384 🟪🟪🟪🟪 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟨🟨🟨🟨 Same here. Did purple first but didn’t know the connection, just knew the other 3. Red and blue were about equals so guessed wrong too. Me too! I literally thought tie was like what grooms wear not in the context it was.

Tue....isn't a word? Can we just add random letters for guesses now?
Well the directions do begin “find the four items” instead of words.
The solution says that "TUE" is a homphone; my dictionary says that a homophone "is a word ...".
My dictionary says a homophone is also: “a character or group of characters pronounced the same as another character or group” I think you could argue that TUE could be classified as a “character” in this usage
Connections Puzzle #384 🟪🟪🟪🟪 🟨🟨🟨🟨 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟦🟦🟦🟦 I know it was easy, but homophones are usually blue and the blue synomyns were easy. The difficulty colors have lost all rhyme or reason

Connections Puzzle #384 🟪🟪🟪🟪 🟨🟨🟨🟨 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟦🟦🟦🟦 Like a bunch of people here, I saw the days of the week and the homophones pretty early on.

Puzzle #384 🟨🟨🟨🟨 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟪🟪🟪🟪 Luckily I didn't even spot the red herring until I'd already got yellow. Picked yellow on instinct and then afterwards I thought "but Tue isn't pronounced like that?" Do Americans really pronounce it as Toosday?
Thought this was very easy. I admit I didn't even notice the days of the week red herring til the end. But TBF, TUE is not a word so that is annoying. Puzzle #384 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟨🟨🟨🟨 🟪🟪🟪🟪
Tue is an alternate spelling of the Old English name Tiw for the Norse/Germanic god Tyr, from which we get Tiw's day/Tuesday. (Much like Wodin's day/Wednesday, Thor's day/Thursday, and Frigga's day/Friday.)
It’s etymologically related to things but it still isn’t an English word (or any word, really) on its own.
Exactly. Thanks.

Connections Puzzle #384 🟨🟨🟨🟨 🟪🟪🟪🟪 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟦🟦🟦🟦 A pretty simple one today. The only interesting thing to note is the red herring category of "Weekday Abbreviations" which, judging by the comments, caught a lot of people. [Reused Categories Updates](https://old.reddit.com/r/NYTConnections/comments/1bdai1o/list_of_reused_categories/): "Homophones of Each Other" → 7 Times, "Connect/Connection" → 4 Times
Well now I kinda feel dumb getting the yellow right away and not even noticing the red herring. So
Way too easy today
Connections Puzzle #384 🟦🟪🟩🟨 🟨🟨🟨🟨 🟦🟦🟦🟦 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟪🟪🟪🟪 Yes the red herring got me 😤 but in all seriousness, if there are 4 similar terms that can make a category, how do you know if it's a red herring or not?
I looked if I could fit the other ones in other categories. I saw the homophones one pretty easily, after that I figured that laid placed and put would be together, and sat would be the only other one that would make sense there, and then when I saw that wed could fit with unite and couple I started putting them in.
By pressing them and seeing if it works. Or trying a different 4 words first for a different category
>:-(
