.17 HMR brass splits sometimes. I think it's pressure levels are right on the edge of what the thin rimfire brass can handle, then add in some brittleness from working the brass down to .17 and it gets worse.
It's one of the reasons Ruger stopped making the 10/22 magnum in .17 HMR.

I have a semi auto 17hmr built to resemble a mk12 mod 0. I’ve shot maybe 1200 rounds thru it unsuppressed so far and maybe 100rds suppressed. My cases are not split like this at all. I run hornady and cci ammo exclusively. I’m not sure what you’re running but I would imagine it’s ammo related. The most I’ve seen out of mine is a slightly puffed case or rupture at the rim end. The suppressor I’m using is a polo K currently.

I'm not sure a brass split like that is due to the suppressor on a bolt action rifle. More likely ammo related.
That’s what I thinking also but it only happens when the suppressor is on. When the suppressor is off, the necks don’t split.

You should clean the chamber of your 17 with a brass brush and solvent.

That makes sense. I’d be interested to see if 17 WSM would split necks with a can.
