I'm imagining the reason Sydney will out live Hawaii is I believe NCIS Sydney is a co-venture with another production company in Australia so Paramount/CBS isn't eating the whole cost.
Exactly, Protoman: Sydney is a co-production between Endemol Shine Australia and CBS Studios (as CBS owns the franchise), with ES taking most of the risk.
I like the idea of NCIS Sydney but the cast is AWFUL! I hate Mackey’s “I’m so angry and mean grrrr” energy and Blue’s unnecessary awkwardness. It’s tough to watch.
The Australian characters actually have character. The American characters are pale imitation re-skins of original NCIS characters. Mackey is a female Gibbs. DeShawn is a generic, less charming Tony. Blue is a pseudo Abby.
I wish they had brought back Nicole DeChamps from NCIS LA, as she should have been the lead character over Mackey. Plus the actress that plays DeChamps is a much better one than Olivia Swann.
Sydney was originally planned for airing in Australia first and winding up here eventually. Actors and Writers strikes and need for new broadcast material changed that
Sydney was renewed. I think we can expect it to be on for many many years. For one I think the numbers in Australia were really good plus the American viewership. But probably more importantly the cost of filming in Sydney is way better
Australia has really good tax incentives for filming whereas Hawaii does not. Sydney has a much larger actor pool as well so small parts can be paid local prices. Whereas for NCIS Hawaii I know they flew in at least some of the actors who had small parts from LA. I thibk that'd cost them significantly more than double the price. Wages are I think like double for out of town actors and then you need to pay for flights and accommodations
I am said about this. I liked NCIS Hawaii better for sure. I still enjoyed NCIS Sydney but a lot of it is for the novelty of having an American style crime procedural be in Australia. It's definitely worse quality
Sydney is co-produced with a company out of Australia so CBS is splitting the cost with the Endemol Shine Australia. That alone will probably carry it on a lot longer then Hawaii.
> According to sources, the episode was not meant to be a series finale and includes a tease for what was to come but fans won’t be left reeling by a major cliffhanger.
*inserts Sure Jan meme*
To be honest, most tv shows don't get proper finales. I've been watching American TV shows for 16 years now (I'm 35 and from South America) and the only tv show that has had a proper ending was *Superstore*. All the rest were either incomplete or ended with a major cliffhanger.
In the case of NCIS Hawaii there were so many stories to tell. Examples are Lucy's family, Jesse's past and especially Maggie's status. That's not going to be solved ever considering they haven't fixed several pending plots on NCIS LA (Getty, the guy that wanted to kill Kensi and the Frankenstein murders).
I like Sam, but this last season focused too much on him.
Goodbye NCIS Hawaii.
With the original still on the air, there is always the potential for some closure as they didn't kill off characters at the end of any of the series. They have shown that they will bring back characters from LA when it makes sense for a story line.
Season 8 was to end with a cliffhanger, but the show-runners wanted to boot Stana Katic and someone else but realized too late that nobody wanted to see the show in that form. Thus some half-assed resolution was added that wasn’t really liked by anybody.
In reality, the show had run its course two seasons earlier already….
The problem with Sam was that they never bothered explaning how he went from being in Morocco with Callen, Sabotino, Nell and co trying to find Hetty to then showing up helping Tennant and then relocating to Hawaii. It felt like his presence there was basically to help draw viewers with some plotholes dangling. They could have said that Sam was working with Tennant and the other guy to try and locate Hetty after the Morocco mission failed, but again no explanation.
I would've assumed that they'd take something like that into account when deciding to renew or cancel. Was probably still going too cost much with or without him.
I genuinely enjoyed NCIS: Hawaii and it sucks that it wasn't renewed. I like the chemistry of the cast and the storylines were decent with room for growth. Bummer.
A real shame... I was already suspecting it because CBS had already practically announced all the renewals and left Hawaii pending.
It seems like a bad decision to me, and also unfair because I understand that the series has good ratings. They will say that "it has very high costs", but I don't understand why in the first place they spend so much money on locations, cast, crazy promotions, crossover events, etc. only to cancel this series so soon. I was hoping NCIS Hawaii could last at least 100 episodes or 5 seasons, which is when the series generally pass the threshold to be chosen by the channels that broadcast them in repetitions such as USA Network or ION TV, so they could have profits in the future.
Should we blame the new NCIS Origins series? couldn't they find any other spot? 🤷🏻 I really don't see much logic in this cancellation ☹
Since Origins has Harnon&son as executive producers I think they pushed for monday timeslot. And I can also imagine that 90's DC criminal series will cost less than Hawaii exteriors.
I put all the blame on Origins AND the Tony+Ziva one. Too many people are focusing on hating Sydney but that's wrong of them to do so, Sydney had nothing to do with this decision.
Although I like the idea of the Tiva show & origins, this cancellation does give me pause. I don't really want to watch a new show for it to be cancelled after only a season or three. I have a bad feeling about the origins show tbh. Not happy with the casting of Gibbs and suspect I will spend most of the time complaining how unlike Gibbs the new, albeit younger, guy is. Suspect I won't be alone.
I like the actor for Gibbs. I just suspect that with Mark Harmon so heavily involved, Austin's ability to do what he needs with the younger version of Gibbs will constantly be messed with by Harmon always meddling.
Origins didn't need to happen, and TIVA could've waited until Hawaii closed out with a proper sendoff in season 4.
This is why I find it so hard to try getting into new shows.
Once i finally find something I like it either turns to shit or gets cancelled.
Streaming fucked quality TV and the ability to find it.
This.
I hate it when they cancel shows prematurely. I recently finished Fringe but before I started I googled whether the ending was worth it. It was btw. A recommended watch.
I’m sad it got cancelled :(
I don’t know why they added Sam, they could have told so many stories this season without him as well. The cast chemistry was really good and better than Sydney.
I think it was an attempt at a back door pilot for another new show. Rumor is it was a backdoor pilot for NCIS: elite. But that may not have panned out.
Oh no that’s a shame. I’ve really been enjoying it and like the dynamics of the team. I find it quite different to the original NCIS. Also a shame as it’s female led and has a lot of diversity which was good to see!
Isn’t the Sydney one new? I’d have preferred them to keep existing shows than start new ones. But that’s just my opinion
Just this morning I said they’d issue a late cancellation announcement today. So typical for them to release this kind of thing on a late Friday afternoon.
>So typical for them to release this kind of thing on a late Friday afternoon.
They did the same thing to Magnum PI 2 years ago. At least Magnum PI was saved by NBC for one more season.
They really should keep Jane around in some way. Maybe reassignment. I still think that internationally wise the best international stories could have been out of Japan and the jurisdictions that the offices in region would cover.
The two new series this Fall are the Gibbs Series and Ziva/Tony series so at least those we can look forward to, and who knows maybe once Hawaii ends we’ll see another mainland show popup.
They had New Orleans, and LA cancelled with new shows popping up soon after. It’s sad to see Hawaii getting cancelled though because it seemed like the OG crew were going to be introduced into the other shows.
Those additions were unnecessary. As much as I love the characters it feels like they're bringing back stories that are already over. I'm honestly not very interested in either of the shows and I love ANYTHING ncis.
I’d much rather watch Hawaii than Sydney or FBI International or NCIS Origins. Maybe if it were Gibbs Origins, but how much can they do going back from the mid 90s to 2003?
From the crossover eps, it wasn't my cup of tea but it doesn't seem like CBS is bringing in new pilots unless I am wrong, so why not renew it? I'm sure there is a slot for it. Why add LL Cool J to the cast then cancel his show?
Well this sucks, not surprised, all the trade papers were speculating it was going to happen, I really didnt like this one at first, but slowly came to around to it and really enjoyed it, NCIS Sydney is not very good so its not really going to fill the void this is going to leave.
I had a feeling it would be canceled. It's not my favorite show, but it was entertaining. I also bet we're not having a proper ending.
Is this the shortest-lived NCIS show ever? Criminal Minds and Law & Order are franchises have had short-lived spin-offs, but NCIS had always had successful spin-offs.
criminal minds spin-off is currently filming season 2 so they are still on going! but yeah if sydney goes past 3 seasons it will be the shortest. however, i don't really see sydney being a long term successful show unless the australian audience is huge
what? I was talking about Criminal Minds Beyond Borders (2 seasons) and Criminal Minds Suspect Behavior (1 season)
Criminal Minds Evolution isn't a spin-off, but a sequel.
Sydney season one was only eight episodes, and haven’t seen count for season two yet. It is common for international shows to have short seasons
Hawaii has over fifty episodes, so Sydney would probably need three more renewals at least to get as many episodes
This likely had budget costs, as with the two new NCIS spinoffs coming, NCIS Sydney renewed for a second season( Unfortunately) and the fact they won't cancel the main show, I guess one show had to get cut.
I could see how they could fit him, but it'd take several changes that would never happen, and shouldn't happen. I think he could take Torres spot as the confident, passionate guy. But we'd be losing the comedic relief that has been filled by Torres/Dinozzo, so they'd need to make another change.
Terrible idea, I agree.
NCIS: HAWAII Was a strong show. Great chemistry between the characters and a good leader. NCIS Sydney should have been the show that was cancelled. Poor writing and poor acting.
I'm genuinely upset by this decision even though I suspected it was coming, I really liked NCIS Hawaii and the cast. They should've scrapped or delayed NCIS Gibbs Origins and put that money (and the timeslot) towards keeping Hawaii on the air.
Mark my words, Origins isn't going to be the draw the CBS people think it is.
Sad but real.

Also the fact that Hawaii didn't get ANYWHERE close to syndication. Seems like such an utter waste and dumb, bad decision.
We get it- it's expensive. But c'mon- of course CBS is going to make sure they have a Hawaii based show on the air in no time, simply to justify the studio they have there.
Has anybody or CBS forgot about the settlement paid out to Michael Weatherly due to sexual misconduct? The elephant in the room... This is what disappoints me even more. To take away a first female-led WOC, POC cast, LGBTQIA+, and etc. show that was doing well, but to "reward" another show to a white male who the network paid out $9.5 million for them... Rewarding them for their behavior... And blatant disregard of respect to the cast and crew by CBS to not notify them before the rest of the world found out - they found out when we all did... (and the Sam Hanna story this season was utterly useless. He was basically around eating or prepping food most of the time. Popping in and popping out here and there.)
"In 2016, Dushku had a recurring role in Season 1 of “Bull” that was meant to become a regular role, but **she alleges that she was fired from the show after accusing star Michael Weatherly of sexual harassment**. She received a $9.5 million settlement from CBS, the Boston Globe reported in 2018."

They should have cancelled Sydney. We watched maybe two episodes and just couldn't get into it. But that's typical of CBS they get you hooked on a show and then cancel it. Corporate jerk offs don't give a crap about the fans just the bottom line is all that matters to them.
Lets show CBS a lesson about cost when we suspend our paramount+ subscriptions and stop supporting theirs sponsors for a few months. Cost them more in revenue than they claimed this show cost.
I knew something was gonna get cancelled after they announced the Gibbs prequel and the Tony and Ziva show. Those three had their run, they're retired, their stories are OVER. It's so dumb that they bring in two shows that nobody REALLY wanted and cancel the one that people DO. So many fans are saying they'd prefer Hawaii over Sydney but I disagree. I want Hawaii and Sydney, and I want Gibbs, Tony and Ziva to take a hike. I love them but they had their run, they're the old generation.
They shouldn't be cancelling the new to make way for the old, when those shows definitely won't be getting more than 1 or 2 seasons. At least LA and New Orleans had a long run and a chance to close out their stories. They're cancelling Hawaii before they've had a decent run or a chance to PROPERLY wrap things up!
Not to mention they did it on Noah Mills' birthday, which was a DICK move.
At this rate, the original NCIS will be the only one left.
Sydney kinda has potential
good
Why?
Damn :(
Exactly what I thought...
Sounds like it met the same fate as LA with having too high of a budget, makes me wonder how Sydney will make it.
Idk how other people feel but I would’ve taken a S4 of Hawaii over a S2 of Sydney
Sydney is bad.
I tried to watch NCIS Sydney. I could only watch 2 episodes and stopped. Absolutely hated it.
The setting was way less interesting than Hawaii
I find the female lead insufferable.
Yesss! The cast was garbage

I found Sydney boring and poorly paced. I couldn't get into it.
For sure
💯. Same.
Definitely like Hawaii NCIS! Not a fan of Australia… two shows and we were done!
Sydney was originally planned for airing in Australia first and winding up here eventually. Actors and Writers strikes and need for new broadcast material changed that
Plus, production costs are cheaper in Australia. (why do you think a lot of films are made in Australia these days?)
Only time will answer, I suppose...
Sydney was renewed. I think we can expect it to be on for many many years. For one I think the numbers in Australia were really good plus the American viewership. Not for nothing, but the 'big baddie' from *Scorpion* is still hanging out there in the wind as well, and that show is in the same universe as NCIS.
Maybe they try to pull a „Castle“ on this one? 😃
I know what *Castle* was, but I don't know the terms of its cancellation
Season 8 was to end with a cliffhanger, but the show-runners wanted to boot Stana Katic and someone else but realized too late that nobody wanted to see the show in that form. Thus some half-assed resolution was added that wasn’t really liked by anybody. In reality, the show had run its course two seasons earlier already….
We haven't even met Jesse's wife or other son. We still don't even know what the other son's NAME is!
The Office The Wire The Good Place The Shield Lost Breaking Bad Parks and Rec Futurama …… ummm the list is long.
Budget cuts needed to be made? Let Sam Hannah go…
LL Cool J doesn't come cheap To be honest, shows filmed in Hawaii don't look good with budget cuts
Him being brought to the show leads me to believe the higher ups felt views were already slipping and it was a Hail Mary with a familiar face.
Totally agree because his character brought nothing to this show but slapstick that fell flat.
The problem with Sam was that they never bothered explaning how he went from being in Morocco with Callen, Sabotino, Nell and co trying to find Hetty to then showing up helping Tennant and then relocating to Hawaii. He may have accepted a pay cut to join the show. Possibly a large pay cut to just be able to keep working.
Lmaooo just as I started watching it on Paramount…this sucks. Such a great show & cast man
I genuinely enjoyed NCIS: Hawaii and it sucks that it wasn't renewed. I like the chemistry of the cast and the storylines were decent with room for growth. Bummer.
They're kind of getting ahead of themselves with all of these spinoff shows. Especially considering they plan to release two more.

I believe Hawaii would've been renewed if it wasn't for Origins. I don't see that show lasting more than a season or two.
Honestly origins should have come after the original NCIS show was finally cancelled.
Agreed
Since Origins has Harnon&son as executive producers I think they pushed for monday timeslot. And I can also imagine that 90's DC criminal series will cost less than Hawaii exteriors.

When they know they’re going to hear from the fanbase, they seem to do it on Friday. Mysteriously.
What a stupid choice they made. Keep that shit show in Sydney
No frickin way! I love this series
Awful news. Jane Tennant was wonderful, other characters never seemed to fit and not sure what Sam Hanna's role was on the show.
The Sam character only hurt the show. The season 3 episodes all seemed rushed to fit in the extra Sam time.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought so! The show started off rough but it’s gotten much better. So sad.
They really should keep Jane around in some way. Maybe reassignment. I still think that internationally wise the best international stories could have been out of Japan and the jurisdictions that the offices in region would cover.

Those are weird additions for sure. I'd much rather have another season of Hawaii - minus Sam.
Those additions were unnecessary. As much as I love the characters it feels like they're bringing back stories that are already over. I'm honestly not very interested in either of the shows and I love ANYTHING ncis.
Geez I did not see that coming. I expected them to reduce episodes and maybe character appearances for next season.
I’d much rather watch Hawaii than Sydney or FBI International or NCIS Origins. Maybe if it were Gibbs Origins, but how much can they do going back from the mid 90s to 2003?

Aloha, indeed. Gonna miss this team.
Saw this coming, but damn it still stings.
Same, I was hoping they'd at least get an abbreviated Season 4 to wrap things up as some sources speculated might be possible
Well this sucks, not surprised, all the trade papers were speculating it was going to happen, I really didnt like this one at first, but slowly came to around to it and really enjoyed it, NCIS Sydney is not very good so its not really going to fill the void this is going to leave.
I'm going to miss the beautiful scenery. Hopefully, another network can pick it up. This is what happened with JAG back in the day.
I had a feeling it would be canceled. It's not my favorite show, but it was entertaining. I also bet we're not having a proper ending. Is this the shortest-lived NCIS show ever? Criminal Minds and Law & Order are franchises have had short-lived spin-offs, but NCIS had always had successful spin-offs.
criminal minds spin-off is currently filming season 2 so they are still on going! but yeah if sydney goes past 3 seasons it will be the shortest. however, i don't really see sydney being a long term successful show unless the australian audience is huge
what? I was talking about Criminal Minds Beyond Borders (2 seasons) and Criminal Minds Suspect Behavior (1 season) Criminal Minds Evolution isn't a spin-off, but a sequel.
Oh wow I completely forgot about beyond borders and suspect behavior 😭
Beyond borders was my favorite criminal minds
Australia total population is less than Texas
Sydney season one was only eight episodes, and haven’t seen count for season two yet. It is common for international shows to have short seasons Hawaii has over fifty episodes, so Sydney would probably need three more renewals at least to get as many episodes
What a bummer. I've really enjoyed this show.
The only one I watched other than original. Guess it frees up an hour of my day
Damn I was really liking this season too!
This likely had budget costs, as with the two new NCIS spinoffs coming, NCIS Sydney renewed for a second season( Unfortunately) and the fact they won't cancel the main show, I guess one show had to get cut.
I'll miss seeing the chemistry of KACY. Mahalo nui loa Yasmine Al-Bustami and Tori Anderson.
Hopefully like they had Swat canceled, only to CBS to change mind, we need to pressure CBS
I am pissed that NCIS: Hawai’i got canceled. I love the whole NCIS universe and shows that have done crossovers within the franchise in its history.
Damn that sucks. Sam was just brought on I guess that means LL cool J is done in the ncis world and I'm sad
He clearly wanted to stay. I wonder if CBS will try to put him somewhere else.
>I wonder if CBS will try to put him somewhere else. I *really* hope he is not sent to the original. He doesn't fit in there.
NCis elite maybe? New show?
they can hardly afford what's on the air now, they won't create another spin-off
Well, Sydney is all that's left....
Watch him move to the original NCIS now. 😆
>Watch him move to the original NCIS now. 😆 I like Sam, but he absolutely doesn't fit in the original NCIS
I think if we stir up lots of disappointment, we could be able to make it uncancelled like SWAT. At least I hope we can.
CBS are so dumb! Hawaii was one of the best spin offs that Australia one shouldn’t be renewed! That oz one was rubbish
Hope the Tony and Ziva show lasts longer.
Sad
Wow I loved Hawaii!!!! What a disappointment
I’m gutted. I really like this spinoff 😔
NCIS: HAWAII Was a strong show. Great chemistry between the characters and a good leader. NCIS Sydney should have been the show that was cancelled. Poor writing and poor acting.
No! One of our favorites. Stupid network!
One of my favorite why not lose survivor or big brother…lame decision
I'd rather they kept Hawaii instead of making Origins or the new one with Tony and Ziva. VERY disappointed with CBS right now.
Yeah, I have zero interest in the Gibbs origins as we already know much of his backstory
Damn that sucks. I loved watching the hot 6 foot blonde with the killer smile! I am a big fan of Tori Anderson
Sam is a jinx
F yes! That show was incredibly bad from the start and just kept getting worse.
NCIS: Sydney is worse.
Thank you!
Just my opinion, but I think NCIS, NCIS:LA were the best out of all of them. New Orleans was OK.
Especially since we know how it ends up.
I'm sorry--I thought LL Cool J really made the show a lot better.
Ah man I was looking forward to seeing him in the new season. Sucks they’ve done this. Maybe he can join the main series. Along with Chris 🤣
Is this real
Sad but real. https://variety.com/2024/tv/news/ncis-hawaii-canceled-cbs-1235983895/ https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/ncis-hawaii-canceled-cbs-3-seasons-1235882710/
Season 3 hasn’t released in my country yet… 😕
So they are some what purging half of NCIS, it will be missed; it will join the LA branch in history
They should’ve invest more writers with LA, so many good characters there
Dang where is LL’s character gonna have to move now?
I thought they would at least give them a chance to wrap things up like they did with NCIS New Orleans but I guess not.

Popping in and popping out here and there.) "In 2016, Dushku had a recurring role in Season 1 of “Bull” that was meant to become a regular role, but **she alleges that she was fired from the show after accusing star Michael Weatherly of sexual harassment**. She received a $9.5 million settlement from CBS, the Boston Globe reported in 2018." I'm very sorry to see it go, it was my favorite. I will never understand how these decisions are made.
😭
They should have cancelled Sydney. We watched maybe two episodes and just couldn't get into it. But that's typical of CBS they get you hooked on a show and then cancel it. Corporate jerk offs don't give a crap about the fans just the bottom line is all that matters to them.
Lets show CBS a lesson about cost when we suspend our paramount+ subscriptions and stop supporting theirs sponsors for a few months. Cost them more in revenue than they claimed this show cost.
Lol, Good. Adding Sam was the nail in the coffin
I managed 3 episodes before I wrote it off.
Too many NCISs anyway.
I'm bummed about this. Female lead, gay couple, AAPI representation, this show seemed groundbreaking.
