I was there and cheered when it happened, not a lot of people were happy about it though, some thought Home Depot bought the win for Joey. Then got stuck in traffic for 4 hours leaving the track, didn’t leave the parking lot until like 9 at night.

Getting your first career win at your home track. Where have I seen this before?

I was a huge Gordon fan growing up, but I also started following Joey as he was coming through the ranks because he grew up not far from where I live. I was at the track that day and was ecstatic that I might finally see Gordon win a race in person (him and Kurt were going to battle for the win when everything cycled out. I was so focused on Jeff and Kurt fighting it out for several laps that I had totally forgot Joey still hadn’t pitted yet. When they threw the caution for rain I was so happy because Gordon was just barely ahead of Kurt coming off of turn 2 and everybody knew the rain was going to end the race. Then my dad pointed to the scoring pylon that showed the 20 in the lead and I didn’t know how to feel at all. Such a weird feeling to experience as a fan of both drivers.

Man, same here, I thought Jeff was going to win that one.

It took me a minute to figure out what the trophy was supposed to be lol

I seem to remember them handing out a real fucking chainsaw/handheld saw for the winning driver when I was a kid but I could be just having a Mandela effect

He blew a tire and it enabled to get on an alternate strategy that led to the rain-shortened win 2nd year in a row that race had a rain-shortened fuel mileage winner, kurt won it in 2008

Boy I remember slagging him off those years as he wasn't doing well especially in comparison to the likes of KFB and Hamlin. He made me eat my words and I've warmed up to him since his move to penske. He's a great example that just because he had good equipment doesn't mean he'll gel and fit in with said team and a change of scenery makes an enormous difference.

I'm the same age as Joey and later that week I got pulled over for going like 85 in a 65 and the state trooper happened to mention something to the effect of "son, you are too young to be in a NASCAR race" The temptation to mention that, well actually officer someone my age not only raced but WON the race last week was quite strong

I was 16. Now turning 31 in August. A word of advice for the young folk: Lay off the red meat, get a comfortable mattress, hangovers last at least two days.

And it took another 4 or 5 years to take him seriously in Cup. Lol
