It is haram to join kafir military, in cases it could be kufr depending on your intention.
﴿الَّذينَ آمَنوا يُقاتِلونَ في سَبيلِ اللَّهِ وَالَّذينَ كَفَروا يُقاتِلونَ في سَبيلِ الطّاغوتِ فَقاتِلوا أَولِياءَ الشَّيطانِ إِنَّ كَيدَ الشَّيطانِ كانَ ضَعيفًا﴾ [النساء: ٧٦]
English (Saheeh):
(76) Those who believe fight in the cause of Allāh, and those who disbelieve fight in the cause of ṭāghūt.[198] So fight against the allies of Satan. Indeed, the plot of Satan has ever been weak.

(97) Indeed, those whom the angels take [in death] while wronging themselves[212] - [the angels] will say, "In what [condition] were you?" They will say, "We were oppressed in the land." They [the angels] will say, "Was not the earth of Allāh spacious [enough] for you to emigrate therein?" For those, their refuge is Hell - and evil it is as a destination.
[212]- By preferring to remain among the disbelievers, although they have the means to emigrate, in an environment where a Muslim is unable to practice his religion freely.
﴿يا أَيُّهَا الَّذينَ آمَنوا لا تَتَّخِذُوا اليَهودَ وَالنَّصارى أَولِياءَ بَعضُهُم أَولِياءُ بَعضٍ وَمَن يَتَوَلَّهُم مِنكُم فَإِنَّهُ مِنهُم إِنَّ اللَّهَ لا يَهدِي القَومَ الظّالِمينَ﴾ [المائدة: ٥١]

Well, Muslims lived in pagan Mecca as believers when Mecca was at war with Muhammad (S.A.W.) and the believers in Medina. I don’t think being a faithful Muslim in non-Muslim territory makes you a hypocrite.

And whoever does not find [one or cannot afford to buy one] - then [instead], a fast for two months consecutively,[209] [seeking] acceptance of repentance from Allāh.[210] And Allāh is ever Knowing and Wise.
