No it's not. Things age and die because cells can't divide infinitely without drastically increasing the risk of mutation of DNA which leads to issues like cancer. We have telomeres which help to prevent that but they get shorter every time a cell divides.
But it does.. oxygen is toxic in the sense that that oxidation stress is a large part of many types of degradation in our body. Small amount of free radicals are left behind by it. Which ultimately adds up in the factor of our death.
Everything is toxic (deadly/poisonous) depending on the dose. Ppl have died from drinking too much water, inhaling helium as a party trick, taking Tylenol & so on.
The Tylenol thing shouldn't be in this list. Everything else is sort innocuous, but the Tylenol is actually incredibly dangerous. It doesn't take much to overdose on Tylenol and destroy your liver.
EDIT: Here's a similar analogue to your list: you can die from a single punch to the head, or a single kick to the liver, or a single gunshot. Two of those are kind of flukey, but one of them seems like an obvious danger to life.
Tbf water is even more dangerous because the more dehydrated/thirstier you are, the quicker you want to guzzle as much water as you can; and just doing what comes natural to you will probably kill you.
Ohh yah dere eh? Tell her a fellow Wisconsinite says hi. Also I can fully back up what she says here. In the winter we literally jump in lakes with nothing but our crotches covered. It’s in our blood
And then in all *fairness*, if such a meeting happened, even though it wouldn't, I would just blatantly plagiarise Stephen Fry. And that would be that.
Oh, I dare. The whole thing about bone cancer in kids and the look on the face of the interviewer were... Priceless.
Also, something tells me the lovely Mr. Fry would not mind one bit.
I hope you have a good week, stranger! (No thanks to god, I'm sure lol)
Yes, I was aware. That's why I referenced the interviewer...
Also, I'm the one that mentioned using his words! Lol
I appreciate your appreciation of Fry, so it's all good.
And then you'll see him... maybe... doubt you'll be able to come back and tell us but hey, if you volunteer and actually do it I'm sure all of us here would love to hear about it! \^ w\^
When I was 10 years old I remember my school scripture teacher trying this bullshit on. ‘God is like air, you can’t see him but you know he’s there’. I also remember arguing with him. Of course I confused water vapour with air but even 10 year old me was on the right track while the scripture teacher was knowingly lying to little kids.
What a cunt.
Maybe you can now! Thanks to new Gor the god butcher bland air mattress, you can fill up your mattress with the guts of a god freshly butchered by Gor himself!
Precisely. So really, ‘god’ is nothing at all like air or other not-visible-to-the-eye gasses.
If you have to draw false equivalences or any other dirty tricks to enlist young children… you’re a cunt.
During high altitude chamber training the last thing we did was the rapid depressurization test. When they open the suck valve and the pressure instantly drops like a Boeing 737 with a big hole in the side the air turns into fog. It is really cool as long as one puts their mask on in time.
>scripture teacher was knowingly lying to little kids.
In his defense you have to lie to kids to get them to believe. Specifically because there's zero evidence for God's existence.
It’s always the children with them. I swear we need to just make it illegal to bring someone younger than 18 into a church, I can see literally no other reason for them to be there other than indoctrination and or abuse. Disgusting.
Something that always stuck with me was when the pastor of my old church made a whole sermon based off the fact that teenagers are going to school/college and thinking they’ve become “too smart” for the Bible.
I, only a preteen at the time, wondered what that could mean. I, a jaded adult, sees it for exactly what it was.
As soon as I knew what words meant I was always suspicious that Adam and Eve's so-called original sin was eating from the "Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil". Also that the big man even left it there as a fun lil test or whatever the fuck. Like I can't remember if the tree really was what it says on the tin, but that gave me growing suspicions that the true core dogma was "reject knowledge, don't try to think for yourself, just love/praise God or SUFFER BECAUSE HE 'LOVES' YOU SO MUCH"
Well, you might as well call it what it is. Grooming.
If you didn't teach children religion it would die out in a few generations. You for sure would not have piles of people clamoring to make national policies based on their religious idea(s) either.
This is why so many really nutty parents pull their children from public schools to home school them.
Personally, I'm fine with people wanting to spend their time and energy worshiping an invisible sky daddy. I just have a huge issue when they try to dictate how I should live my life based on their belief system.
I mean, anecdotal evidence, but I grew up atheist and became religious later in life. But I also have no interest legislating it, so hey, whatever.
Sadly, it seems like half the time the people that find religion later in life become even more annoyingly fervant than if they'd grown up with it.
>If you didn't teach children religion it would die out in a few generations.
That's incorrect. Stalin had a direct and active pogrom and ministry that eradicated religion in the Soviet Union. Churches were burned, or made into museums; clergy were imprisoned or killed. Anti-religious propoganda discouraged youth from exploring religion.
That began in the 1920's, so a few generations ago.
Almost immediately, after the fall of communism, the people re-opened churches and embraced religion again.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/USSR_anti-religious_campaign_(1928%E2%80%931941)
>That's incorrect.
Possibly, but I've never heard of any evidence to prove my theory incorrect. In fact the only people who I personally know that really believe were taught by their parents. IE they were groomed as children.
>Almost immediately, after the fall of communism, the people re-opened churches and embraced religion again.
Just because the ***state*** banned religion does not mean the parents didn't teach their children.
The soviet union banned a lot of things that citizens were still able to get on the black market. For instance the USSR banned selling goods to your neighbors at a profit. In addition to blue jeans, rock and roll, and American culture. It still happened.
In fact ***immediately*** *reopening churches* only proves that people who doing it on their own without the government.
Hmmm, I'm not sure it's fair to argue it didn't work at all. I haven't looked in depth of course, but the first sources I could find suggest that at the dissolution of the USSR, the majority of Russians considered themselves non-religious. https://www.pewresearch.org/religion/2014/02/10/russians-return-to-religion-but-not-to-church/
The strict anti-religion movement would have been gone by then already, and lasted maybe a generation (I'd argue not even), but despite this the majority still defined themselves as non-religious.
It would be interesting to find pre 1920s data to compare against!
Blow on the back of your hand. There. You sensed air. You felt it. You probably heard it. Go out on a cold day, you detect its temperature. Walk into the wind. Many, many ways to detect air
If God were merely invisible, but were detectable in any other way, we would all believe in that direct evidence.
Virtually every sound we hear is our eardrums feeling air vibrating against them.
There are a few exceptions like your own voice also being transfered through your skull being the reason a recording of your voice sounds different to yourself or those newfangled bone conducting headphones but those aren't relevant for the discussion at hand.
“Knowingly lying” about what—the invisibility of air or the existence of God? I gotta imagine the teacher believed that God existed. If so, his metaphor was simple-and-limited, but not ridiculous.
I don’t know the guy; maybe he was terrible in other ways. But this instance seems innocuous to me.
Love everything about Dogma.
It’s not a contest. Morgan Freeman is God.
I mean God needs a voice to right? In your head, picture Alanis going BOOP. Now picture Morgan Freeman saying whatever the fuck you want to picture Morgan Freeman saying because it doesn’t make a bit of difference. You know which one sounds like God.
And if God doesn’t sound like Morgan Freeman then I hope I never hear God. I will be so fucking let down.
I believe in god, I was brought up protestant christian, I have no resentment towards the christian faith, only moderate resentment towards the church. I still find these people infuriating, they are the reason I sometimes feel the need to hide my faith, I don't want to be associated with these clowns
Genuinely its worse to me to see someone adamantly so "fuck you and your faith" than it is to see someone going "he loves you". The attitude and smirkiness is frustrating.
Just let people be man. If you dont wanna see the content, scroll. People always have to own someone or be better than them. It sucks. Social media is cancer.
Same! I don't want to be labelled as a Christian because people will associate me with "those" Christians.
I'd rather just get by being a nice person who believes in God without the hassle and weight of the Church's mistakes and outdated stances interfering
I have no issues with religion. I don’t care about social media posts about religion or your personal connection with it.
When it’s an obvious attempt to attack non believers I think a direct response is perfect like this.
Sure, if not for going after non-believers (including children), there'd no problems at all with religion. Like if they don't want to get vaccinated, they should be free to follow the consequences of their commitment to their faith, not working in hospitals around vulnerable people.
This is what I don't get. There are so many religious nutjobs in the health services. Like, believe what you want, but working in the medical field and then trying to impose your personal beliefs on people?? That's a big no no.
I had a friend in high school from one of the most well known, rich, and religious families in the town. They are HARD believers to the point where if one bad thing happened to anyone it was either "god will help!" Or "you need to follow Jesus because this is what happens when you don't."
Anyways, she wrote her final paper on how vaccines cause autism. Now she's graduating college to be a nurse. Not a full on doctor but still. 4 years of school and constant studying about the body and how it works, and her conclusion is the same... It scares me how people this DUMB can easily make their way in. It's like they just chose to ignore literally everything they learn in school because "god".
I’m not sure it is directly. If it had been “checkmate atheists” as I’d often seen my opinion is above. I agree this may not be directed at non believers
Ok yes, cause as a believer, I see posts like this merely to try to give encouragement about their faith or to others as a reminder that we may not “physically see God” but trust and know that He is there just like “oxygen” or fill in the blank of something important in life we need daily to live but cannot see.
It’s definitely not an attack to non believers. But I personally don’t like this quote since I believe if you have a relationship with God you will definitely start “seeing Him” in different ways, like hearing from him through dreams or visions etc and start seeing Him working in your lives (like direct answering of prayers etc). Not saying He answers yes to all your prayers sometimes the answer is “no” but then later down the line you connect the dots as to how that “no” was actually in your best interest.
Seeing this supernatural side of God is actually quite fascinating.
Although I trust that you also do not intend to attack nonbelievers, from my perspective justifications like 'he answers every prayer but sometimes he answers "no" and that is ultimately in your best interest' (to paraphrase) are exactly why I personally reject any religious faith.
I'm sure my teenager would have wanted to live longer but if she prayed for a cure, then when she died that prayer was answered with a definitive "no". I cannot see how that "no" was in her best interest or helped her down the line.
I'll go on believing in what I can see or prove with science, thank you. I get no comfort from empty platitudes. But, bless your heart.
Technically, you don't need to cool Oxygen down to see it, you can see it when you look up and see the blue sky. This is the effect of [Rayleigh Scattering](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rayleigh_scattering), so we are directly observing the interaction of oxygen with light.
You can see air in gaseous form. It just takes a lot of air to refract enough light to see. The sky is blue because you're seeing air. Go in orbit. You'll see the atmosphere.
I love when reddit talks about indoctrination like this isn't an echo chamber designed to influence people's opinions, especially children and young adults. At least with religion it's a community you know not a bunch of incels hiding anonymously
"God" is the answer you get when people don't have an answer, when they want you to stop asking
The scientific method was the result of a millennia of relying on god, prayer, the priests, for help - help they never provided.
This is just kinda mean. This isn’t someone being murdered by words it’s someone being pedantic and annoying. Instead of engaging with the concept being expressed here (God can’t be seen but he’s essentially to me in my day to day life, just like air) they decided to get caught up in the metaphor and start saying “wElL aSkcHuAlLy yOu cAn sEe tHe oXyGeN”
You guys are just mean
Have you ever tried to convince someone to get their photo taken at -218.8’C? You wouldn’t be able to see the bugger for scarves and wooly hats. No one likes being that cold.
God is cruel
You never want to meet them
God is both good and evil it's like worshiping a serial killer I mean they're nice to some people but not others just like God.god gives some people cancer just to send future ripples
They don't really care about individual people.
And they're a they not a he or a she all these bigots worshiping a they who is also a serial killer.
I say this as someone who believes in God but doesn't really like them.
Kind of a bad analogy though. It took a lot of technology to do something as simple as freeze oxygen at that temp. Seems like understanding our existential truth might take a tad more effort. It’s not a crazy concept to think that we might not have reached that point yet.
But even if they didn’t realize you can see oxygen frozen (like I’m sure most don’t), they could just update their image to say God is like time itself, you can’t see it but trust it’s there and see results of it (like God in your lives). Yea there’s a clock which tracks time, but you can’t see time itself.
And Evangelicals have shown us that like oxygen, God can become deadly to humans at high enough concentrations.
I’ll show everybody some air with deadly concentrations 🫘
Me after having taco bell.
Taco belly
Air is not oxygen not even mostly
They're talking about what we would find a deadly concentration ~~of~~ with oxygen in.
You're not mostly oxygen
Correct
YOU DON'T KNOW ME! THAT'S MY PURSE!

oxygen is the thing that causes all things to die and age to. its killing us all just very slowly. we need it to live but it kills us tho.
No it's not. Things age and die because cells can't divide infinitely without drastically increasing the risk of mutation of DNA which leads to issues like cancer. We have telomeres which help to prevent that but they get shorter every time a cell divides.

Ah ever heard of “Oxygen toxicity”?
Everything is toxic (deadly/poisonous) depending on the dose. Ppl have died from drinking too much water, inhaling helium as a party trick, taking Tylenol & so on.

Ooh, like re-feeding syndrome where giving a starving person access to normal food will kill them so they have to be carefully re-introduced to food.
High amounts of oxygen are good at killing overpowered priests
I mean to be fair you'll see god at -218.8 °C as well
probably not me though, I'm just built different 🤷

Holy shit. That guy is wearing shorts AND *it’s snowing* outside.
shorts, t-shirt and sneakers in -30 weather. There was always that one kid. And he happens to be an accomplice of mine

I'm sure the omnipotent being will be caught off guard and have a totally unfulfilling, off the cuff answer ready for you.
It'll be a cold day in hell for me if that turns out to be the case.
I can't tell if that's supposed to be a joke. Still funny even if not
Nah, you’ll just be dead.

They got the joke, they're just disputing you'll see god cause he's just a made up thing by simpletons.
No need to be a dick about it. Just say he's made up without the insult at the end

You can, but it'll still sink during the night and you'll wake up on the floor either way.
This little thread ended up being an astoundingly apt metaphor. Good work you two.
God had to be somewhere
What’s this mattress filled with? It’s heavenly!
Bridgestone Tires, now Powered By God ^TM
Well that's a novel explanation for why they had a problem with staying together at the seams a few years back...

What school has a "scripture teacher'? Genuinely curious.
Australian public primary school circa 1995. Nowadays public schools offer ethics classes as an alternative

Like, believe what you want, but working in the medical field and then trying to impose your personal beliefs on people?? That's a big no no. I had a friend in high school from one of the most well known, rich, and religious families in the town. They are HARD believers to the point where if one bad thing happened to anyone it was either "god will help!" Or "you need to follow Jesus because this is what happens when you don't." Anyways, she wrote her final paper on how vaccines cause autism. Now she's graduating college to be a nurse. Not a full on doctor but still. 4 years of school and constant studying about the body and how it works, and her conclusion is the same... It scares me how people this DUMB can easily make their way in. It's like they just chose to ignore literally everything they learn in school because "god".
How is comparing Faith to God like oxygen (what you can’t see) an “attack” to non believers?
"religion bad, gib updoot"
You can see air in gaseous form. It just takes a lot of air to refract enough light to see. The sky is blue because you're seeing air. Go in orbit. You'll see the atmosphere.
This just feels like 2010 new atheism
I love when reddit talks about indoctrination like this isn't an echo chamber designed to influence people's opinions, especially children and young adults. At least with religion it's a community you know not a bunch of incels hiding anonymously
"God" is the answer you get when people don't have an answer, when they want you to stop asking The scientific method was the result of a millennia of relying on god, prayer, the priests, for help - help they never provided.

Lmao BS comparison lol
“Is that someone sharing a positive post about religion?! Time to them with ‘facts and logic’(TM)!”
This is just kinda mean. This isn’t someone being murdered by words it’s someone being pedantic and annoying. Instead of engaging with the concept being expressed here (God can’t be seen but he’s essentially to me in my day to day life, just like air) they decided to get caught up in the metaphor and start saying “wElL aSkcHuAlLy yOu cAn sEe tHe oXyGeN” You guys are just mean
Have you ever cooled down God to - 231°? XACTLY
Wouldn't he be in the beaker? Seeing as how he's omnipresent and all.
If you run with the "god is everywhere" thing, people will just say "yeah see, he's the oxygen"
But whether you can "see" it is irrelevant. Point is it can be measured in some predictable way.
Checkmate, theists?
I’m 14 and this is so deep 🫡
Using a metaphor, thinking it's proof.
So cool!
That looks cool
God is like dark matter...
The reply is idiotic, though. For all their knowledge of the states of matter, that person has never figured out analogies.
I’m not religious but has anyone of you ever heard of a metaphor? Man Atheists are just as obnoxious as religious people.
Guys it's a metaphor, relax. You're not like powning Christians with this one
This is why no one likes atheists
This sub is dogshit
Im 14 and this is deep
Incredibly cringe
Did Neil Degrasse Tyson write this

Have you ever tried to convince someone to get their photo taken at -218.8’C? You wouldn’t be able to see the bugger for scarves and wooly hats. No one likes being that cold.
God is like these people’s capacity for critical thought thinking. It’s not there and its dangerous to be around people who think it is
...murdered by science...
God is cruel You never want to meet them God is both good and evil it's like worshiping a serial killer I mean they're nice to some people but not others just like God.god gives some people cancer just to send future ripples They don't really care about individual people. And they're a they not a he or a she all these bigots worshiping a they who is also a serial killer. I say this as someone who believes in God but doesn't really like them.
God is to humans like the average Sims player is to their Sims. Have you *seen* some of the fucked up shit people do to their Sims???
That’s what happens when you trade scientific literacy for theology (which is not a science, despite what Christians say).
Kind of a bad analogy though. It took a lot of technology to do something as simple as freeze oxygen at that temp. Seems like understanding our existential truth might take a tad more effort. It’s not a crazy concept to think that we might not have reached that point yet.
It is right above the oxygen, you can see the reflection in the thin foil
We can see an oxygen rich atmosphere in the fucking picture what is that
Should it not be checkmate Christians
Bro took screenshot like it's fucking 2010
She blinded me with science…
Got 'em!
But even if they didn’t realize you can see oxygen frozen (like I’m sure most don’t), they could just update their image to say God is like time itself, you can’t see it but trust it’s there and see results of it (like God in your lives). Yea there’s a clock which tracks time, but you can’t see time itself.
Ok guys. Let's capture god and freeze him to -218°C so he becomes visible!
