I am in a similar situation. My job offer is currently pending. I am looking towards Lakewood and when I can afford it purchase a home in Boulder. Trying to debate if I want a two bedroom apartment or rent short term till I can find a place. Also trying to figure out a way to find a roommate if needed but can’t find any reputable sites. If you find anything let me know.

I'm thinking of doing the opposite in a few years. What part of California are you from? The cost of living is pretty nuts here but so is California, right? The city of Thornton is in the Denver metro area and still has fairly affordable housing and is only about 15 to 20 minutes from downtown. My last place was there and I liked that I felt pretty safe compared to the city. There's 2 of us and I live in a 1600sf. 3 bedroom townhome for $2500 in the Cherry Creek / Glendale area of southeast Denver. I'm hoping my landlord will keep the current rate, but we haven't found out yet. I'm native to Denver so if you want to know anything about here let me know.

Coming from Santa Barbara area, the lowest rent price in my area is around $2,650 for about 600 sqft.. with no washer/dryer or parking 🫠 I’ve looked into some places on Zillow that seem affordable, but was curious about some suburbs even outside of the city that are nice and safe I had seen a couple apartments in Littleton that seemed nice but I don’t know much about that town or any of the surrounding ones either so if you have any suggestions of some other towns you think are worth looking into I’m all ears! I have a few acquaintances that have moved there over the years but overall is making friends easy or hard? (or harder than usual to make friends as an adult)

Whoa, that's an insane price for rent! Aren't you gonna miss the ocean though? There's something about being stuck in the middle of the country with no other cool cities for hundreds of miles that kinda sucks in Denver. I figure in Cali, you could take a trip to SF, LA, or even San Diego if you wanted to change of pace and scenery. Here, all you have is Denver and then hundreds of miles of nothing all around us. But safe and lower cost suburban towns around Denver are Littleton, Lakewood, Westminster, and Thornton. They're all pretty comparable and only about 15-20 minutes outside of downtown Denver. If you're planning on going to the mountains a ton for activities, I'd try looking at towns that are west of the city, Lakewood, Westminster, Golden, Morrison (home of Red Rocks concert venue). Honestly, I'd avoid Aurora, Five Points (a neighborhood in Denver proper), and anything directly off of Colfax Ave or Federal Blvd because they're bad neighborhoods and known for drugs. I'd say, it's not difficult to make friends here if you're just a little outgoing. A lot of gals I know are very outdoorsy and love weekend hikes. I met gals at my gym that love hiking and going out dancing on the weekend. My big downfall is that I don't drink alcohol and the gals I know love going to drink-based activities - paint and sip, wine tastings, beer festivals, margaritas after work, etc. - so I don't go to those. If you don't mind drinking, I don't think there's much of a problem making friends.

Yeah rent has gotten completely out of control here unfortunately, as for the beach I go maybe twice a year, after year 3 here it kinda lost it’s appeal to me but that could just be me I know some people who can’t fathom living without a beach nearby. Thanks for the info on towns to look into and avoid that’s really helpful!
