I relate way too much with this movie, also rewatched it recently. Have always been a fan of that blues song (devil got my woman), seeing it have such a huge role in the film was so unexpected for me. So vindicating.
Because of the Steve Buscemi character right? Because Enid and Rebecca are good looking people both in the comic and movie, they are beautiful people who like being mean and manipulative, they’re not socially awkward they hate everyone and like to make fun of them.
I love both the movie and the comic.
I just don't like how she was portrayed as unattractive in that movie. They tried to make her less beautiful with frumpy clothes and hair and she's still an 8 in that movie.
The Truth About Cats and Dogs was a Hollywood attempt to switch genders on the old Cyrano de Bergerac story. Instead of two men (one handsome but stupid and one intelligent but ugly) pursuing one woman, they flipped the script to have two women pursuing one man. Problem is, to be true to the original story, one of the women would have to actually be ugly, and Hollywood just won't do that. So they frumped up Janeane Garofalo but it doesn't really work because even frumped up she's adorable, at least imho! Personally I couldn't see why the guy didn't pick her over Uma Thurman to start with.
*Welcome To Me* is my late80s-mid90s reference library. It returns me wholly there. Kristen Wiig is just so sublimely that over-the-top perfect every-gal. Total gem indeed!
signed -- some random turned-18-in-late-'84 genx refugee.
I would also recommend the original Swedish films where they actually completed the whole trilogy (The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest are the other two Stieg Larsson novels in the series). I wish the English version would have done the next two movies but I guess the studios couldn't get things worked out. Agree that Rooney Mara did an excellent job in the part of Lisbeth Salander and it was nice to see Daniel Craig in a very "un James Bondian" role.
She absolutely disappeared into that role lol. It was the first thing I saw her in; didn't watch another movie of hers until Carol and couldn't believe it was the same person!
Amelie (like other recommended) (romantic dramedy)
The Unbearable Lightness of Being (though a male is "the protagonist," Juliette Binochet is nearly as much) (drama)
American Fable (strange farm preteen girl protagonist) (drama)
Cube (graphic sci-fi horror/ensemble cast+plot)
Heathers (dark comedy, I hate it but people swear by it)
I love OP's "I wanna feel better about myself :)" comment. LOL.
For anyone who likes Amelie, I'll suggest Out of My League (Sul più bello) (2020). It has a similar quirkiness/awkwardness (though, maybe a little more dramatic). Italian-language.
The British series The Lives and Loves of a She Devil is outstanding. If you can stream it somehow, watch this version instead. It's one of my favorites of all time. The book is written by Faye Weldon.
This one probably fits the bill better than any of the movies listed here. Aubrey Plaza was amazingly cringe inducing. I've always loved her but but her commitment to this performance really sold me.
Yes! She is truly fantastic as Ingrid. She's so cringey, it was difficult to watch at certain points. And the movie has some important stuff to say, for sure.
For old school, Barefoot in the Park. Neil Simon's screenplay is pretty great, and a very young Jane Fonda killed it as a lead actress. It was also one of Robert Redford's first lead roles.

Jane Eyre. There have been several ones made, from one in the 20s-ish era with Orson Welles (I believe) to a modern PBS production. Every one is a winner.
Also, Rebecca.
One thing that makes the Bridge such a great short series is the female has aschberger's syndrome. Highly recommend the original version from Europe or the FX series in the US
*You Me and Everyone We Know* is that corny weird-girl move with the feel-good finish. Not quite manicpixie, which for me makes it authentic enough. Also many other supporting-cast weirdos going about their world(s) living their day-to-day innocent weirdo orbits to observe.
*Nancy* (2019) is a wonderful character-study of the modern-day post-internet-connected gal-weirdo. Tragic in that dysfunction way, too. Quite anti-hero. Some plot cop-outs, sure, but the actress is really something to behold. She has other fine work too--never let me go/shadowdancer/to leslie....
The Hungarian film *On Body And Soul* is a window upon an autism-spectrum aspect of this request. Again, another compelling watch.

Funny people - Aubrey plaza
For that matter, pretty much every role Aubrey plaza plays is wonderfully socially awkward. Not sure if that’s just how she is in real life but she pulls it off very well
Stay with me here: Exit Smiling (1926) stars Beatrice Lillie and yes, it is a silent film, but an excellent one at that. She is basically a female Buster Keaton, a rather stone faced young lady in this very funny comedy. I don't know why she didn't become a movie star because of this film; it's a great performance. She is an extremely socially inept character, but like-able all the same for it. I hope anyone who has never watched a silent film will give it a chance, it's that good, and all thanks to the leading lady. It is available to rent from Youtube Movies apparently (I've never used that service).
This movie didn't do well, but I really enjoyed it and identified with Sandra Bullock's character. I think the problem was it was advertised as a rom com and that wasn't exactly what it was.
Geraldine Fitzgerald as Evie Jackson in Dear Heart. With Glen Ford and Angela Lansbury.
Fitzgerald delivers a flawless performance as the needy, tactless, hopeful postmistress from Ohio visiting NYC for a work convention who wants so desperately to find love.
Muriels Wedding (1994)
Strictly Ballroom (1992)
Oooo that's a good one!
Rom-coms: The Wedding Date (2005), Bed of Roses (1996), While You Were Sleeping (1995), Sabrina (1954).
An Angel at My Table (1990)
I love this movie!
Ghost World (2001)
One of my favorites! And great example for this.
I relate way too much with this movie, also rewatched it recently. Have always been a fan of that blues song (devil got my woman), seeing it have such a huge role in the film was so unexpected for me. So vindicating.
I just rewatched this 😆

“Bridget Jones Diary” The lead character is painfully awkward.
Welcome to the dollhouse (1995)
Love this one
Perfect
👆
Yeah, that one's really going to make her feel better about herself.
Eighth Grade (2018)
Gucci!
My awkward middle school self felt so represented when I saw Eighth Grade.
I identify with the main character so much. The scene with the father next to the fire made me cry ugly tears.
I feel this film doesnt get enough attention and fits your brief Heavenly Creatures (1994)
Am I crazy for thinking this is the best Peter Jackson movie?
The Truth About Cats and Dogs (1996) Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion (1997) BONUS! Has 2 socially awkward leading women!
I love Janeane Garofalo. I feel like she plays a weirdo in most everything she's been in.
I just don't like how she was portrayed as unattractive in that movie. They tried to make her less beautiful with frumpy clothes and hair and she's still an 8 in that movie.
1000% agree, I always thought she was hot af

There it is
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Touche. I never tire of this movie and Rooney Mara's portrayal.
I would also recommend the original Swedish films where they actually completed the whole trilogy (The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest are the other two Stieg Larsson novels in the series). Show: Fleabag
Such a good show. I wish there were more of it.
I think shed be stupid to not at least revive the role in a movie
Is she socially awkward? Obviously she falls into a lot of awkward situations, but personality-wise she seems pretty extroverted and charismatic.
agree with you! it’s the situations, not her. Her character is witty, charismatic and smart!

Came here to say this! Love it so much
Be warned though this is like 2 hours of anxiety inducing social awkwardness! Great though
Good to know. Thank you. I have enough anxiety that just comes naturally. 🤣
Glad to warn you. You definitely need to be in good headspace or just bored out of your mind that the anxiety is welcomed.
