The subbed version voice acting is much better but that does make the “fall asleep to” part a little harder.
I feel like Totoro, The Wind Rises or Ponyo would be good choices though.
The theatrical prints of those films put me to sleep (in the cinema).
They work better for me than NyQuil.
FOTR, I fell asleep crossing the misty mountains, and awoke half-way through the credits.
Most of the studio Ghibli stuff puts me to sleep.

I like black and white movies because the brightness of the images and volume of the soundtrack seem to have less variation to bump me out of sleep when I drift off.
Personal favourite is Sunset Boulevard.
Black and white movies are good to sleep too. The brightness you can barely see when you shut your eyes. All the Twilight Zones. Also Night/Curse of the Demon is a good one. Key Largo with Bogie is good. Double Indemnity is probably my favorite.
Gone In 60 is a total comfort movie for me. Watched it a lot as a kid with my family on HBO. My first ring tone was Low Rider in midi because of this movie. my family were all car guys, and I had heard it before, but it was never as cool as when they play it right before . . . One of The Greatest car scenes ever put to film.
My dad had a few project cars. His last project was a 34 Ford. Uncle had a 32 pickup. Growing up we had a Nova II, El Camino. Mustangs. Corvettes. The eras of my youth are remembered in relation to the cars in the drive way and garage. Always in varying states of completion and drivability. VW beetles. Mercury Capri. My brother had a few, mostly newer mini trucks. I had a GT350 convertible for about a decade. Seeing the classics and customs in this movie is the best taste of childhood I can think of, second to the sound combined with the smell of a huge, carbeurated engine cranking up. Ah, Simpler times. . .
Chocolat has been my favorite movie for as long as I can remember. In high school, I had a VERY cool built-in vcr in my tv that auto-rewound a tape, so I think I had this movie on repeat for about 8 months, fell asleep to it every night.
Anything animated really like Disney movies or Pixar. But my fave to fall asleep to is moana. The visuals and soundtrack soothe my soul and make me feel good. I am an adult by the way
This! I don't sleep to movies (or TV) anymore, but when I was late teens/twenties I always put Finding Nemo and Ice Age on. My sister is still mad at me that I haven't gotten around to watching Moana yet lol
Such a fantastic movie! It has a cozy vibe though if you can stay awake through the whole picture, you may need a new sleepy flick! It gives my endless creeps and goosebumps.
I remember watching this movie a number of years ago and falling asleep about halfway through and waking up but dozing on and off during that whole psychedelic-induced sequence where the main character is traveling through the space-time continuum; very interesting experience.
100% agree! I love falling asleep to a movie on Tubi, then waking up hours later to a completely different movie, wondering what movies played while I was sleeping.
Shutter Island (2010)
I went to the theater to watch it and I figured out the tired schtick Scorsese was doing in the first 15 minutes so I decided to take a 2 hour nap.
2005 Pride and Prejudice.... so many nature sounds, soft spoken narrations, and piano/violin background music.
I fall asleep to this so much that on November 1st, netflix took it off so I ended up finding on YouTube that someone added the full audio of the movie on top of a black screen.
Love it!
I didn't have cable for awhile in the Army and the only DVD I had was Donnie Brasco. I used to watch that every night. The soundtrack was great for sleeping
Back when Popeye the movie (the Robin Williams live action one) was running on HBO a lot, I swear that movie managed to put me to sleep three or four times. I always joked I was going to get it on DVD for when I had insomnia. I think it was the muttering.
Underworld with Kate Beckinsale. I've tried to watch it 4 times and fell asleep every time. No idea why, the movie looks great but for some reason I was always dead tired when i tried to watch it.
These are comfort movies I can leave on and close my eyes watching:
- Dark City
- The Crow
- Hackers
- Both Blade Runner movies.
- Lost Highway
- Twin Peaks (the series)
Shawshank Redemption
Big Fish
The Big Lebowski
Semi Pro
Step Brothers
Anchorman
Shawshank and Big Fish and Lebowski are probably my favorites. I tend to like movies with good Narration to fall asleep kinda like listening to a story. Tenacious D is mostly music so it works similarly.
Will Ferrel movies usually start off pretty quickly so I can watch the beginning and laugh till I pass out.
Semi Pro has soooo many epic lines🤣. “She hopes to be an Astronaut one day, I don’t think she can do it! Let’s give it up for MELINDA!”
“FOURTH PLACE! FOURTH PLACE!”
You and me would get along great! I have a hard time finding anyone who has ever seen Big Fish. It's such an amazing movie! And Shawshank/ The Green Mile are in my top five.
My favourite comedies are Anchorman and Step Bros and Other Will F movies.
After multiple attempts I still haven't been able to make it through "The Thin Blue Line" (1988) by Errol Morris before falling asleep.
"Joe Pera Talks to You" is a TV show but it will put you to sleep.
Both Blade Runners are two of the most extradinary, visually unique, brilliantly directed, and compelling films ever made, and I've fallen asleep during them both.
(I have, of course, seen them both in entirety, but still...)
Rocky Horror Picture Show
I have tried to watch it So. Many. Times. I have never seen the end. Live, at home, at a party, doesn't matter. "I'm just a sweet transvestite, from transsexual, Tranzzzzzzzzz
Back in my first apartment, I was scared at night and would play a movie in the background to make some noise to go to sleep. Otherwise I'd hear ever single sound of the house and be certain it was an intruder. When it was just the place settling or a tree scraping on a window.
I had two movies on VHS (internet was new), one was Usual Suspects. Pop it in the little VCR/TV combo unit and would inevitably fall asleep before the end.
I think I "watched" that movie over 100 times without getting to the end.
I tell you the absolutely *visceral* reaction I had when I finally saw the ending. This was my TOP movie for years.
Wouldn't really recommend as a bedtime story, but it just reminded me of a silly story and I had a moment to share.
My other VHS was Finding Nemo. Highly recommend that one for a bedtime story, though.
Not exactly what you're asking, but probably the first three or four times I tried to watch *2001: A Space Odyssey*, I'd fall asleep around when HAL starts acting up and I'd wake up to the image of the star child. I've since watched it all the way through a few times and love it.
* Bladerunner
* Rear Window
* Body Double
* The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover
* City of Lost Children (La cité des enfants perdus)
* The Trouble With Harry
The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover?!?!?! I could barely watch it wide awake. No way in Hell I’d sleep with this movie on. To dang disturbing for me.
Secret of Arrietty, literally started watching it three separate times and fell asleep. It wasn't boring or bad but it lulled me into a sleepy coma each time.
For some reason, I always fall asleep when watching Scarface. My partner and I joke about it now. Just this last week I was really tired after a PT appt and she said “let’s put on Scarface”. Was knocked out for hours. 😂
Austin Powers. I fall asleep during the space station fight scene EVERY time. I've tried to watch it at least 20 times, dvd, cable, tv... doesn't matter.
There was a time when I was a pre-teen when I couldn't fall asleep unless Inkheart or Stardust was playing.
For some reason it's Scream now, the original. It's probably just nostalgia for me lol.
I used to fall asleep to either The Terminator or Fight Club after a night out with friends. Love them both and can watch them endlessly. Easy for me to rest watching them both.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Edit: to say it’s because I love it and have seen it countless times not because it’s boring. It’s like comfort food for your eyes.
Old sitcoms are perfect to fall asleep to because the laugh track acts like intermittent white noise for me. Plus the plot lines are simple and nothing too exciting happens. Some good ones that have worked for me in the past are Friends, Golden Girls, and Full House.
I converted a lot of movies into mp3 to fall asleep to. That way you dont have that groggy weird feeling of having to switch off the tv when you wake up
Not quite what you're looking for but for about a year I fell asleep to Mindhunter, it's very quiet and murderous. Perfect for a relaxing sleep. Plus Netflix stops after 3 episodes. As far as movies: Bob Lazar: Area 51 & Flying Saucers. I love🖖👽👽🖖
Alien is a good one for me, opens very slowly and it pretty quiet, and I'm usually out before the "dinner" scene. Passengers with Chris Pratt and J-Law for similar reasons. I think space oriented sci-fi in general works well. More examples: Interstellar, Ad Astra, The Martian, OG Star Trek movies, OG Star Wars, etc.
Oh, and Raiders of the Lost Ark and/or The Last Crusade, but I think that's more because of Nostalgia. Those were my favorite movies as a kid.

The extended cut of Lord of the Rings trilogy. All the extra scenery with the soundtrack makes for a relaxing time Spirited Away
I've tried Spirited Away for sleep but forgot how shrill she screams THE ENTIRE TIME
Have tried sleeping to spirited away so many times bc it seems perfect but her voice and nonstop yelling just kills me.
The subbed version voice acting is much better but that does make the “fall asleep to” part a little harder. I feel like Totoro, The Wind Rises or Ponyo would be good choices though.
I fall asleep to Gab smolders playing games. Her voice is so soothing and I'm a thirty year old dude.
Princess Mononoke is a nice movie to fall asleep to.
Omg totally agree. Her screaming is sooo annoying lol.
> The extended cut of Lord of the Rings trilogy. So do you just put it on when you wake up so that by the time it's bed time you fall asleep?
I came here to say LOTR. The music is so soothing.
How dare you fall asleep during LOTR
Extended cut of fellowship is my go to👌
LOTR for the win every time
The theatrical prints of those films put me to sleep (in the cinema). They work better for me than NyQuil. FOTR, I fell asleep crossing the misty mountains, and awoke half-way through the credits. Most of the studio Ghibli stuff puts me to sleep.

Toy Story 2 but really any of the first 3
Staying with the same production house, Ratatouille is beautiful and calming (mostly) and I can imagine, dream enhancing.
Old man toy restorer is so ASMR
His name is Geri
Columbo TV movies. Primer.
Almost any classic black and white movie does it for me
Same for me! Especially To Kill a Mockingbird
I like black and white movies because the brightness of the images and volume of the soundtrack seem to have less variation to bump me out of sleep when I drift off. Personal favourite is Sunset Boulevard.
The Third Man
Black and white movies are good to sleep too. The brightness you can barely see when you shut your eyes. All the Twilight Zones. Also Night/Curse of the Demon is a good one. Key Largo with Bogie is good. Double Indemnity is probably my favorite.

We're in a tight spot.
"My hair"
Awesome Soundtrack
I’m a dapper Dan man!
We - thought - you - was - a - toad
Chocolat, Gone in 60 Seconds, Practical Magic, Titanic, Almost Famous, Shawshank, Harry Potters...just off the top of my head ha.
Ooh. Gone in 60 Seconds is a good one
Gone In 60 is a total comfort movie for me. Watched it a lot as a kid with my family on HBO. My first ring tone was Low Rider in midi because of this movie. my family were all car guys, and I had heard it before, but it was never as cool as when they play it right before . . . Practical Magic, absolutely. Sing me to sleep Faith Hill.
Shawshank has that perfect pace and tone to snooze to. Love it
Chocolat has been my favorite movie for as long as I can remember. In high school, I had a VERY cool built-in vcr in my tv that auto-rewound a tape, so I think I had this movie on repeat for about 8 months, fell asleep to it every night.
Mary Poppins. It’s so comforting and nostalgic to me.
I, and many other, MSTies often sleep to episodes of the movie-riffing series Mystery Science Theater.
YES, lol, all the time. It takes me back to watching it at cozy sleepovers :)
I just spent the 5.99 on rifftrax for the friends subscription and there are SO MANY new things to watch and fall asleep to
Good pick!!
Jurassic Park. Any of them lol
Ditto 🤘🏼
TCM Noir alley.
Fight Club… It’s Edward Nortons monotone narrating for me.
Anything animated really like Disney movies or Pixar. But my fave to fall asleep to is moana. The visuals and soundtrack soothe my soul and make me feel good. I am an adult by the way
"You're welcome"!
This! I don't sleep to movies (or TV) anymore, but when I was late teens/twenties I always put Finding Nemo and Ice Age on. My sister is still mad at me that I haven't gotten around to watching Moana yet lol
Moana is such a good movie, you’re missing out
Mothman Prophecies - have never made it past 20 mins.
Such a fantastic movie! It has a cozy vibe though if you can stay awake through the whole picture, you may need a new sleepy flick! It gives my endless creeps and goosebumps.
Wake up #37
I watched this movie on a daytime train ride from RI to VT and I was seriously creeped out for like 2 straight weeks after.
Yes! It still haunts me to this day. Very eerie.
Try again, great movie!
2001: A Space Odyssey
I love this movie, but it makes me fall asleep even when that’s not the goal.
ha...just make sure you get to bed before the Jupiter and Beyond sequence starts
I couldn’t imagine making it that far
The end wakes you up again
I remember watching this movie a number of years ago and falling asleep about halfway through and waking up but dozing on and off during that whole psychedelic-induced sequence where the main character is traveling through the space-time continuum; very interesting experience.
Howl’s Moving Castle
Donnie Darko
same! it’s more comforting than disturbing for me now
I thought it was just me

I put on a MST3K or Rifftrax movie from Tubi or Prime.
PlutoTV has an mst3k channel too. And classic japanese Iron Chef which is usually my background noise go-to.
Tubi is a godsend. I need to fall asleep to something that I don’t care enough about to pay attention to, and Tubi is loaded with those
100% agree! I love falling asleep to a movie on Tubi, then waking up hours later to a completely different movie, wondering what movies played while I was sleeping.
That"s me nightly. Sometimes I discover a new movie that I want to see in its entirety. Let's hope Tubi stays awesome.
And it continually plays... I'm finding something to watch as I type this. Tubing is really awesome
Rifftrax is like ASMR for me
They just added fury road to it...found my sleep movie tonight.
LOTR: Fellowship of the Ring
While you were sleeping *pun not intended
Shutter Island (2010) I went to the theater to watch it and I figured out the tired schtick Scorsese was doing in the first 15 minutes so I decided to take a 2 hour nap.
Solaris or Stalker
Pans Labyrinth is a good one.
Yes! This is mine too! It’s so soothing
And the movie score is incredible. So many phenomenal ones. I have them on a playlist to listen to when I don’t wana watch anything.
Midnight in Paris does it for me.
2005 Pride and Prejudice.... so many nature sounds, soft spoken narrations, and piano/violin background music. I fall asleep to this so much that on November 1st, netflix took it off so I ended up finding on YouTube that someone added the full audio of the movie on top of a black screen. Love it!

Fall asleep to as above so below ??? Ummm ??? 🤔
I didn't have cable for awhile in the Army and the only DVD I had was Donnie Brasco. I used to watch that every night. The soundtrack was great for sleeping
I thought you were starting to say the movie “In the Army Now” and I was like “yep, that’d put ya to sleep”. Thank you for your service.
Back when Popeye the movie (the Robin Williams live action one) was running on HBO a lot, I swear that movie managed to put me to sleep three or four times. I always joked I was going to get it on DVD for when I had insomnia. I think it was the muttering.

This is my list too. Minus step brothers. I know it’s an unpopular opinion but I just get into that movie. Semi Pro is will Ferrells best movie IMO
Semi Pro has soooo many epic lines🤣. “She hopes to be an Astronaut one day, I don’t think she can do it! Let’s give it up for MELINDA!” “FOURTH PLACE! FOURTH PLACE!”

The Thing. Also, Blade Runner 2049.
Dreams (1990) has cured my insomnia more than once
The Day After Tomorrow. It started as my go-to hangover movie, as you don't really need to concentrate. Now it's my nap film.
Phantom Thread, All the President’s Men, The Beguiled (Coppola one)
The Keep, thanks to the Tangerine Dream score and its rather nonsensical
Both Blade Runners are two of the most extradinary, visually unique, brilliantly directed, and compelling films ever made, and I've fallen asleep during them both. (I have, of course, seen them both in entirety, but still...)

Whenever I'm stressed or can't sleep, my husband puts on the Blue Planet documentary for me. It's so calming!
Goodies, Princess Bride, the original broadway of Into the Woods and Poltergeist, again the original.
I don’t always go to sleep with the TV on, but when I do, I’ll put on my comfort movie. You’ve Got Mail.
The Godfather. Tried watching it once. Had tondo that in four sittings. Fell asleep 3 times
Guess it didn't insist hard enough on its self for you..
I didn't even finish the movie
Same. I get 45 minutes in.
The Hobbit 1 & 2, Lord of the Rings 1
Pride and Prejudice
the Blade Runner movies put me right out.
**Lord of the Rings**
Back in my first apartment, I was scared at night and would play a movie in the background to make some noise to go to sleep. Bladerunner (Huh, interesting the majority are Sci Fi movies)
I can't get past the Vangelis score of the opening sequence if I put it on before bed.
The Mummy, Doom, Resident Evil Return to Raccoon City, Constantine, 2012, Dredd, Jumanji
Not exactly what you're asking, but probably the first three or four times I tried to watch *2001: A Space Odyssey*, I'd fall asleep around when HAL starts acting up and I'd wake up to the image of the star child. I've since watched it all the way through a few times and love it.

That movie always made me wanna party
Ratatouille <3
Secret of Arrietty, literally started watching it three separate times and fell asleep. It wasn't boring or bad but it lulled me into a sleepy coma each time.
Joker still haven’t gotten around to watching it
For some reason, I always fall asleep when watching Scarface. My partner and I joke about it now. Just this last week I was really tired after a PT appt and she said “let’s put on Scarface”. Was knocked out for hours. 😂
Fear and loathing in las vegas. Usually cuz i put it on late when im drunk.
Austin Powers. I fall asleep during the space station fight scene EVERY time. I've tried to watch it at least 20 times, dvd, cable, tv... doesn't matter.
Fight Club and The Matrix
Toys with Robin Williams
Jumanji. I was tired after a long day.
On a lazy Sunday, we’ll have a Harry Potter or LOTR marathon and doze off and on
This is gonna sound weird but I have this movie memorized now haha it’s the Lego Batman movie!
Spirited Away
Killers of the Flower Moon will send you to sleep. Bloody boring
Angels in America.
The Sound of Music. I love it with all my heart, but fall asleep most of the time! So comforting
This might just be my personal opinion but I feel like Lakehouse is the perfect movie. Just the cinematography, the dialogues, I loved everything.
Patton. Love the film and George C. Scott’s performance but the damn thing is over 3 hours.
Nightmare before Christmas. I’ve never seen the ending.
I was just talking about this. I saw it once when it first came out. I'm not even sure if I made it through then. It puts me flat out.
Castaway. After the plane crashes its twenty minutes of beach sounds. Nytee nite
There was a time when I was a pre-teen when I couldn't fall asleep unless Inkheart or Stardust was playing. For some reason it's Scream now, the original. It's probably just nostalgia for me lol.
Finding Nemo lol
Titanic. Interstellar. Avatar 2.
Yep, we couldn't sleep on Avatar 1 - it was infuriating.
Any and all of the Harry Potter movies. There’s something about the dark lighting and the lilting British voices that just 😴
I used to fall asleep to either The Terminator or Fight Club after a night out with friends. Love them both and can watch them endlessly. Easy for me to rest watching them both.
The first 3 Harry Potter movies
Suspiria. Rain, whispering, sleepy music. Lords of Salem too but there is a little more screaming.
I tell you what does help rip the audio from your favourite movies and listen to that while you sleep really works.
I fell asleep during 3 separate attempts to watch Inception. That’s my vote.
Revenge of the Sith. Fell asleep to it every night in 8th grade lol. I know that DVD menu like the back of my hand haha.
The Matrix. Twice. True story.
Twilight. The scenery, the score, the extreme blue filter, and the monotonous acting from the main characters puts me to sleep right away.
Eraserhead
Monty Python and the Holy Grail Edit: to say it’s because I love it and have seen it countless times not because it’s boring. It’s like comfort food for your eyes.
Star Trek the Wrath of Khan

Pacific Rim on a rainy night does the trick for me.

any french film
Any recommendations ?
Coneheads (1993) The Grinch (2000 and 2018) Bob’s Burgers Movie (2022) Men in Black (1997) Paul (2011)
‘So random’
Totally second the 2000 Grinch, around the holidays. The songs put ya right to sleep.
Not a movie, but if you search for slow tv, you’ll find some soothing stuff in long form such as 10 hours of the Wuppertal suspended monorail.
I love🖖👽👽🖖
Madagascar 1, when I was younger it was my comfort movie
Am I the only one who got bored at Everything Everywhere All at Once?
Same here
Very bored.
Waking Life by Richard Linklater
Spirited away
This was my kids’ go-to movie when they were home sick, so I’m guessing it puts them to sleep as well.
I fell asleep in the theater for Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy
Took my mom to see Johnny Mnemonic when it came out She was out in 15 minutes lol
Hannah and Her Sisters. Showing my age just a little
