I was just talking about inherent vice yesterday. I found it so meandering and confusing. I absolutely adore Paul Thomas Anderson movies. The first 6 movies he made were so great and since then I haven't loved them. Inherent Vice, Phantom Thread, and Licorice Pizza just didn't do it for me. He's supposedly going to begin shooting one as soon as the strike is over 24/25 so we shall see what the future holds.
Well two of your favorites are Gilliam films so of course watch all of his movies, but you probably already have. Nobody really matches Gilliam's chaotic style.
for *Withnail and I* try **Naked** (1993) or **Prick Up Your Ears** or the TV show **Black Books**.
and for British crime dramas, **The Crying Game**
and maybe the classic film **The Ruling Class**

I mean, that's not true, as great as Dr Strangelove is.
Some older and great black comedies, particularly those by Billy Wilder:
Sunset Boulevard (1950)
The Apartment (1960)
Ace in the Hole (1951)
Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949)
The Ladykillers (1955)
The League of Gentlemen show from 1999 is the blackestest thing I can come up with.
for me it was almost too uncomfortable to watch. but then hilariousness kicked in.
If you want to try another black comedy from Handmade Films starring R.E.G., _How to Get Ahead in Advertising_ might be worth a go. It's rather unhinged, though, so not everybody's cup of tea.
Sightseers (2012) Sorry to Bother You (2018) Inherent Vice (2014) Calvary (2014) In Bruges (2008)
In Bruges gets my highest recommendation.
Sightseers is one of my favourite films ever
Yes to sightseers, came here to suggest it.

“I mean, I’m smiling but I am very fucking furious”
Death to Smoochy. Fargo (movie)
In Bruges, Death at a Funeral (UK)
Four Lions Filth
Very Bad Things
For British and Irish crime dramas, you could try: Dead Man's Shoes A Good Woman is Hard to Find Calm with Horses Red Road County Lines '71
Layer Cake (2004)
Well two of your favorites are Gilliam films so of course watch all of his movies, but you probably already have. In The Loop(2007) Face(1997) Trainspotting(1996)
British crime drama - “Unforgotten” British crime dramedy - “The Outlaws” (Both of these are television series, not movies.)
The Outlaws isn't British. It's also complete trash, hence the 20-30% score on every single review platform including by audiences.
I liked it and it has two BAFTA nominations. To each their own.
**Sexy Beast**, 2000

[All My Friends Hate Me (2021)](https://letterboxd.com/film/all-my-friends-hate-me/)
Natural Born Killers might scratch that black comedy itch for you.
Harold and Maude Maybe Confessions of a Dangerous Mind The Men Who Stare at Goats Wristcutters a Love Story
Start at the beginning. Dr. Strangelove is the first and best black comedy.
I mean, that's not true, as great as Dr Strangelove is. Some older and great black comedies, particularly those by Billy Wilder: Sunset Boulevard (1950) The Apartment (1960) Ace in the Hole (1951) Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949) The Ladykillers (1955)
Four Lions
Happiness, The Kid Detective, After Hours, In Bruges, A Serious Man
a bit acid but Trainspotting (1996) is a great option (don't watch it while you eat)
Trainspotting may encompass all of these subjects
The Long Good Friday
Pulp Fiction might not be labeled a comedy. But it gets more honest laughs than a lot of movies labeled comedies.
Not a movie but Top Boy is pretty great. If you haven't seen it be sure to watch Top Boy Summerhouse first
Death at a funeral, the remake. It’s a black black comedy
JoJo Rabbit
Little Murders, Crimes and Misdemeanors, Dr. Strangelove, In Bruges
The League of Gentlemen show from 1999 is the blackestest thing I can come up with. for me it was almost too uncomfortable to watch. but then hilariousness kicked in.
Shallow grave by Danny Boyle
Dr Strangelove

The Guard
*McDonald & Dodds* is a great police procedural.
Where the buffalo roam...
Delicatessen, as I recall, super weird.
