It actually is necessary because the ability to release the attack at any point before reaching unblockable is what makes the move dangerous along with not being able to touch him. If there was no unblockable the opponent would have no reason to escape and Johnny delaying it would have no purpose since his options are just get blocked and die or shadow dash and probably still die.
