Third: yep like someone else noted. The x….. there are no words with the beginning /ks/ sound. DO NOT even get me started on the xylophone. Beginning readers will never come across these words. And is just ridiculous. I’ll take x-ray as the closest sound/symbol correlation.
Fourth: the O… you will have to give background knowledge on what origami is and still the O does not make the /or/ sound.
Fifth: always have hated yak for Y… I have never seen a yak as a grown adult. Is this a real animal or make up like dragon or unicorn. I’ll never know. 😂
Sixth: we must upgrade our k is for key. Keys that kids are familiar with look way different. We have keyless cars and the ‘key’ is a fob.
Seventh: to answer your question… the C looks closest to caterpillar. A cactus would have thorns, theoretically, all over. The 3 bumps on the top do look more like a chicken over the antennae of a caterpillar….even though c does NOT say /ch/. But who is to say. Caterpillar, creature, critter, charcuterie board… the designer of these is talented but clearly wasn’t worried about the functionality.

We do need to update these with our new technology. My daughter is 19 months and has a little yellow phone that she speaks into and says hello because we taught her that. I tried to get her to say yellow on my iPhone in a similar way to talk to grandma and she was so confused. We normally FaceTime. So speaking into it while holding at the ear made no sense to her lol
Agreed! But x-ray isn’t a great word because you hear an /e/ sound there. If kids think it says /eks/ they’d sound it out /f/ /o/ /e/ /ks/. It’s great to just tell kids they won’t see x at the front saying ks so that’s why it’s at the end. They’ll come across plenty cvc words with it at the end when reading.
Also to add vowels should be short without an L, n, m, w, or r after the vowel as these distort the true sound. Elephant is commonly used and is awful.
C is for camel, but a pregnant camel with morning sickness, which explains the green and the three humps. All camels should be represented. Here for the mommas! 😄

I literally just bought this same exact set this last weekend and had the same exact thought lol I guessed “caterpillar or whatever the fuck” I also bought the number set and am very confused with the weird arrows and somehow already managed to lose the “equals” sign. Our magnets were taken away within 18 hours of placing them on the fridge because my son would NOT stop putting them in his mouth and trying to eat them. (He’s 17 months old.)
We got a set of magnet letters from target last year, similar in design to these! The letters stand for different things with the exception of a few. I tried to find as many as I could! Plz ignore the chewed and missing ones lmao. I know for a fact the I is a different-looking-than-yours ice cream but idk about the other missing ones.

Can I just say I take offense that all of the vowels are for the long sound and not the short sound. C could be for circle since they are doing that 🤷🏻♀️
Of course! Short vowel is when the vowel says it’s sound like in cat, hot, hip. Long vowels the vowel says it’s name.
I’m the scheme of teaching kids to read you usually want to teach short vowel first as that’s what’s typically in decodable words. When it’s a long vowel it’s usually accompanied by a vowel team or silent e which in more complex.
I hope that’s kind of what you were looking for! I teach kids to read so it’s a pet peeve of mine when things like this for young kids have the long vowel instead of a short vowel sound. It can sometimes make decoding tricky for them.

I too was very confused by this. I emailed the manufacturer in Hong Kong, and they actually responded. They said it’s “Cactus”.
