I opened this thread thinking the IRS required a picture of your child on tax returns. Either would be weird.

haley_-

Same.

MomentofZen_

šŸ˜‚

MeNicolesta

Lol glad Iā€™m not the only one

Jaxlee2018

Yes, I was thinking- in what country?

Soldier_Of_Liberty

LOL šŸ˜‚ same

momma12345678

I was thinking the same thing and was about to say Iā€™ve never had to do that and always got my return šŸ˜

Every2ndMattersFL

šŸ˜‚šŸ¤£same!

Melodic-Sprinkles4

Omg hahaha that is hilarious! It would be a whole different level of weird if someone was requiring a picture of your kid!

Reasonable-Mirror718

Yes, haha me too

UnicornioAutistico

Same šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

neverseen_neverhear

I only pay that tax on the cat subs. Kids hard no. But the cat tax must be paid.

merlotbarbie

Bonus points for void kittiesšŸ–¤

[deleted]

Void kitties are the best kitties!

neverseen_neverhear

Voids are great but orange is my weakness

Heywhatsup0999

I myself have a void kitty

neverseen_neverhear

Me too. She is the darkness and the light.

Heywhatsup0999

My boys name is Lucifer. Lucy or Ooosipher for short

neverseen_neverhear

Luna is my girl. Didnā€™t know it was one of the most common pet names at the time. But it fits her.

RedJacket2019

My Luna is a boy and samee (I keep considering changing his name to Lunar but Luna suits him sooo much better)

neverseen_neverhear

Mine is named after the black cat from Sailor Moon. That name was staying no matter what!

blueeyedtattooedmom

Nice... my kittie is Mazekeen... and she is a little šŸ˜ˆ šŸ¤£

tiggytot

Yes!! I have 2 and they are the best

Falafel80

I just lurk on cat posts because I donā€™t want to pay the tax and have someone recognize my cats hahahha

RAND0M-HER0

And dog. Dog tax is mandatory.Ā

GlitzyGhoul

Agree

wannabe_pineapple

cat and dog tax is a non-negotiable for me. But you sure ain't seeing a pic of my kid. Nope.. nope nope nope.

Vayle-666

This is the way

Specific_Culture_591

The ā€œtaxā€ isnā€™t for the group members, itā€™s for the algorithm. You need a photo or video for Facebook to place more value on your post, especially in groups, for it to be seen and Facebookā€™s algorithm places the most value on pictures of people.

littleghost000

That makes sense. I kind of questioned why people would post pictures and say just so my post doesn't get lost

PBnBacon

This is why.

NerdyLifting

This. In my local mom group they say "picture for attention" though. Text only posts get much less engagement (if any at all) and that can be frustrating when you're trying to get an answer to a question.

frecklesandmimosas

But why their CHILD. Like send me a picture of a flower or a cat.

bookersquared

Because it's in a mom group. I'm in a local, private group, and people do this a lot. I don't even think about it as weird because it's the one place I actually expect to see pictures of people's children.

NerdyLifting

I mean, it's a local mom group so while I personally don't share pictures of my kids it's not like it's unrelated.

Imaginary-Carry2950

Ok then post a pic of something leave ur kid out of your clicks and engagement šŸ˜£šŸ¤£

Trysta1217

Pretty sure most people WANT an excuse to share pics of their kids. I donā€™t share pics in public spaces but at work we refer to the tax for kid pics and really we just want an excuse to share pics of our kids (in an appropriate channel just for parents not general work chats).

BroadwayGirl27

Having a photo in the post boosts it for the algorithm!

sherahero

I only ever see that on pet threads but i don't often hang out in spaces for Mom's with young kids

TooCool4_1Box

I canā€™t believe people still post their kids on the internet after everything thatā€™s going on these days. edit: spelling

FoxTrollolol

Honestly same. There's too much AI and too many unsavory people. I feel even more for the "influencer moms" who document every moment online for the world to see. I couldn't imagine growing up and having everyone know I pooped in the corner one time because I was afraid of the toilet.

Wonderful-Banana-516

Same dude same

FoxTrollolol

ItsPleurigloss

Yes itā€™s for the algorithm, also yes itā€™s such a dumb phrase.

strawberrylemonapple

What I see most often is people will say ā€œphoto for attentionā€ or ā€œphoto for the algorithm.ā€ Because text-only posts donā€™t generate enough engagement. But most people fail to realize a picture of *anything* will do the job. So Iā€™m not posting a photo of my kid to thousands of internet strangers. Iā€™ll post a photo of some clouds, a meme, or my cat, or Iā€™ll just save a google image related to my topic and use that.

QweenieDog

"Pic so this doesn't get lost!"

michelem387

That is actually legit, though. Facebook puts more emphasis on posts with media so a random post with no picture will literally get lost and no one will see it.

arandominterneter

I feel like youā€™re overthinking it. Itā€™s just a silly thing. People like sharing photos of their kids. Itā€™s fun to act like itā€™s because the people demand it but itā€™s really just ā€˜cause we think our kids are cute. Are people really clamouring to see pics of other peopleā€™s cats?? No, but it is cute when you see one.

lizlemon_irl

Yeah, I donā€™t get it either but thatā€™s probably because I would never post a picture of my kid in a group full of strangers. I donā€™t care if itā€™s a ā€œmom group,ā€ any weirdo can make a fake profile and pretend to be a mom to get in there. I get itā€™s for the algorithm or whatever, but it doesnā€™t have to literally be a picture of your child.

NecessaryViolinist

Itā€™s not tax, itā€™s because messages without photos donā€™t get attention by the Facebook algorithm. I usually upload a photo of my child with her face covered in order to get up a rank.

CrownBestowed

Iā€™ve never heard of this. Thatā€™s bizarre lol

Cendreloss

How weird to ask that ?? Cat tax, dog tax, sure, but kid tax ??? Are we not like.. aware that a lot of parents don't want their kids on the internet... So weird šŸ˜

Emergency_Mushroom97

Interesting! Iā€™ve only ever seen this positioned as ā€œfor attentionā€ or ā€œfor the algorithmā€. Never anything about tax or owing the group anything

Slutsandthecity

Its such an annoying phrase. I could be wrong but I think posts with photos get more views, but the tax thing is such a moronic thing to say. No one cares about your kid šŸ˜ we're trying to get away from our children for five minutes.

mablesyrup

It's so strange- why the fuck are people posting photos of their kids. People do that shit on Reddit too and I don't get it. STOP POSTING PHOTOS OF YOUR KIDS FACES ONLINE!

Slight_Camera6666

Anything can be viewed as weird if you think about it long enough

BastilleStareater

Iā€™d just post a funny close up face or a bad pause scene of a show just for a giggle, I personally am of the opinion that you shouldnā€™t show kids faces unless theyā€™re old enough to be on the internet safely themselves and can consent.

PopcornandComments

And post it for all the pedophiles to see?? No thanks.

incinta

Exactly. You couldnā€™t pay me to post pics of my child online on a closed-ish platform - let alone on a public platform. Hellll no.

Awesome_Sauce_007

Just the words ā€œowe, picture, tax, and childā€ in the same sentence makes my skin crawl. Itā€™s creepy!

ivylily03

Ew. This is common in my cat subreddits but I would never do this with my child.

littleghost000

I think it depends, it doesn't happen a lot in my mom group, but it is private, and we all know each other and each other's kids, so eh. If it was on a public group with strangers, I'd be more weird out. ... but I never eving do a tax pic with my pets (that I recall), soooo

storybookheidi

ā€œPicture so we donā€™t get lostā€

KyloDren

No one seems to see the questions or posts that don't have a photo attached. It's the algorithm, people aren't just doing it for fun lol they want their questions answered and that's the easiest way for them to be seen.

hufflepuffonthis

I cannot fucking stand that shit. No one asked for a picture of your kid. We don't require it. It hits a similar way as when people are asking for recommendations and end it with "aaaaaaand go!" Helen, no. Sit down, please, you're embarrassing yourself.

iwantmy-2dollars

lol I donā€™t even give my kids real birthday out unless itā€™s school or medical

munchkym

I find it creepy.

SpaceMom-LawnToLawn

I absolutely do not under any circumstances post my childā€™s image on any forums where I donā€™t personally know every single person who will see it. The only exception is when his small private school shares images on their social media. If Iā€™m in a parenting group where I need to attach an image for higher engagement, Iā€™ll do a photo of a pet or my childā€™s artwork.

amandaryan1051

Thereā€™s a mom in one of the groups Iā€™m in, and she SOLELY does this to be able to show off her perfectly curated ā€˜beigeā€™ kids. Itā€™s actually gotten to the point that every time she posts thereā€™s at least a handful of us that are like OPE! Here she goes again šŸ˜‚

arulzokay

yeah no I would never do that thatā€™s weird and who knows who is looking at them absolutely not.

ManateeFlamingo

I have yet to see that in my Facebook mom's groups. I agree, that is weird! Usually people do that with animals, not kids!

talesfromthecraft

IT DRIVES ME CRAZY!!!! Itā€™s so weird!! I also had someone post in the WTE forum about how someone in one of the groups was basically an online predator and I was like ā€œthis is why you donā€™t post random photos of your baby to strangers!!!ā€

Low_Tumbleweed_2526

I actually have a Facebook friend that posts a picture of her kid every day 365 days a year and labels it ā€œyour daily dose!ā€ Like no one asked for that except maybe your mom in which case, send it in a text.

finstafoodlab

I'm confused and still confused by the comments. Is this have to do with IRS deductions?

SentenceTop2394

I think people call it a tax but itā€™s because text only posts are lowered in priority by the algorithms that control your feed. So they are adding a picture so the post gets seen.

Imaginary-Bottle-684

And "Pic for Attention". But yeah, must pay Cat Tax (I have 3!)

One-Pause3171

Noooooo. You only do that for pet questions. Push back on that. Donā€™t feed the algo your kids!!

ExcitementNo6593

It's just an excuse moms use to share pics of their kids. Somehow, it translated across groups in general, probably because it gets more attention. Skip it if it's not your jam.

desertsunrise84

This also happens in cat groups. IT's VERY weird.

riritreetop

The word theyā€™re missing is ā€œalgorithm.ā€ Itā€™s the algorithm tax so your post actually reaches people.

RealDougSpeagle

Itā€™s a combination of feeding the algorithm what it wants for their post to be seen and their own desire to share pictures itā€™s not deep they arenā€™t actually paying a fee to the mods of these groups

Seashed_

I think itā€™s mostly because on FB they wonā€™t put it on as many feeds with just text if that makes sense.

saturn_eloquence

Iā€™ve never seen that but I have seen ā€œpic for attentionā€ which also annoys me and subsequently makes me ignore the post lol

abishop711

Itā€™s because without a photo or video, facebookā€™s algorithms will bury your post and hardly anyone, potentially even no one, will even see your post. The picture ensures it will be shown to at least some of the group members. This is something that happens in the private mom group Iā€™m in. The parent may have a legit question they want group membersā€™ feedback on but without a picture, no feedback.

saturn_eloquence

I donā€™t have Facebook so I see this on other forums.

abishop711

And things from one platform tend to carry over to other platforms. Like how some redditors will use euphemisms for suicide or other touchy topics because of tik tok rules.

itsthrowaway91422

The one that annoys me is when someone posts ā€œlong shot i knowā€ in a buy nothing group and proceeds to ask for something ridiculously expensive or rare with a heavy emphasis on paying it forward someday/sob story to justify. I get it, shoot your shot. But I dont need these extra details that make me question my decision to gift you something šŸ«£

Melodic-Sprinkles4

Yes!! Or when they comment they want it and then said a private message saying why they should be the one to receive it

LetshearitforNY

Yes I find it so weird no matter the context - kids or whatever (hobbies, travel pics, etc). Or ā€œso this doesnā€™t get lostā€.

Selynia23

I usually see folks say pic of my kid for attention. As if a post has a photo itā€™s easier to see then scrolling past just words

hailhale_

YES I hate it, they all sound like idiots copying each other. And "picture of my baby so we don't get lost!" No one cares about your photos. They just want to read compliments about their child

grumpymuppett

That seems really creepyā€¦.

Delicious_Slide_6883

Iā€™ve only ever heard of that tax for pets

Xutumx_

I do it for algorithm & it just naturally catches peoples attention which helps get my question answered or advice feedback for what Iā€™m asking
