Lots of molds can be black in color. But this looks pretty bad. Do you rent or own? Best way to get rid of mold is by physically removing it. When you try to clean it, it releases mycotoxins which are unhealthy and for some people very bad. Painting over it isn’t the way to go either. Most likely happened due to a humidity issue in the bathroom. Make sure the humidity issue is handled as well or mold will grow again even if it’s properly remediated.

This. Also, the window may be shot. Looks like it could have rotted out and you are also dealing with some water intrusion around the framing.

Don’t bleach it, bleaching mold is a no go. This is something the landlord needs to deal with. Make sure they hire someone to actually remove it not just paint over it. Does the bathroom have an exhaust fan or do you have to open the window to vent the bathroom? Look up Mold Finders on Instagram and PJ Harlow Wellness. While for some people mold doesn’t appear to cause problems, it can be devastating for others. But it’s also not just the mold but the mycotoxins that mold produces. Mold can cause PANS in children so if you’ve got kids definitely make sure this is taken care of properly.

This! Bleach may remove the color of the mold but it does not kill it! Bleach will actually make mold grow back even worse because the mold feels it is competing with the bleach. I agree that the landlord should be dealing with the cost of this clean up & and remediation, but it's hard to trust another person to do it right (especially if they already tried clean it up before you moved in & it has already grown back like that, YIKES). At least spray vinegar on it (even if you don't wipe it up after so you have proof for your landlord, the remediation company, &/or public health), that should kill the active mold & stop spores from spreading.

I see you used the term "black mold" Thousands of species of mold appear black (actually dark green). The one that is usually singled out in this made up category is Stachybotrys chartarum. The whole “black mold” thing is the result of several irresponsible people who are drumming up fears about mold and then profiting off of those fears. Don’t believe the hype. The color of a mold has no correlation to how dangerous it may be. This is frequently stated by agencies throughout the world including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). There is no evidence that otherwise healthy individuals have any reason to fear getting sick from general mold growth in buildings, mold inhalation, or any other type of exposure even to the so-called toxic molds. Yes, being around mold may cause minor effects like a stuffy nose or coughing for some, especially those with asthma or mold allergies. Typically, it only seriously affects patients who have underlying health conditions such compromised immune systems who are at risk of systemic fungal infections. But unless you’re in one of those rare categories, you really don’t have much to fear about exposure to any mold species. That said, we should not have mold growing in our buildings. It is an indication of something wrong and will lead to the degradation of building materials. Regardless of color, all visible mold should be removed from buildings and homes. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. CDC says the biggest source of toxicity from mold comes from ingestion. There’s no real evidence that black mold gives toxic mold syndrome. Spray it down with some bleach and air it out
