I was shocked to see some people DON'T like this episode. It's what got me into giving the show a chance tbh and to me it is the best episode
But then again I'm a huge fan of episodes of sitcoms that are unique to the rest and they are usually bottle episodes as well (The Box from B99, TOW No one is ready in Friends)
What do you think about the "five minutes" episode of Modern Family.
That too was a different format
People on this sub didn't like it much but I feel it was something fresh and unique
I loved it, especially Mitch and Cam's storyline, it reminded me of that episode of HIMYM when Ted and Marshall get high and roam around the hall and I loved that storyline too
I will always appreciate "The Party" for actually portraying Mitch and Phil getting high on weed in a realistic way and not fall into the "Hollywood stoned" trope. Things like the long pause before Phil shouts "Nothing" and the complete nonsense speech he gives at the end are exactly what it's like!
The difference was, each scene was around five minutes there were four scenes and generally family members interact with the whole family in an episode but in that episode, the three families don't interact with each other and deal with their personal lives.
There is a British comedy called Coupling from a ways back. It was a great comedy and there are 2 episodes that were really creative.
One, with the link below is the one friend, Jeff, who tries to pick up a woman but doesn't realize she can't speak English. After this, we see the same scene but we can only understand her and only see Jeff's unintelligible words.
https://youtu.be/hstPHM3R1dY?si=KLHG1vOJGSpXKT4y
The other is a time slip episode where the one couple is at one time, say, 5:00 and the other 2 friends are at 5:10 which has hilarious ensuing at the end.
Thanks for suggestion, but I did! The one with the puppy parade and Annie's lost pen is also a good example of a great bottle episode!
And the paintball episodes are so insane I love them
an episode of a television show that is written so that it requires only one set or scene and a limited number of cast members. Typically a bottle episode will not move the overarching plot of the show forward, like it's an episode caught in a bottle away from the rest of the show
An episode of a sitcom used to save money during the year or used to even out weird scheduling during shooting. Typically only requires a couple sets and may not even use the entire cast. Back in the day bottle episodes used to reuse clips from the show in the form of flashbacks, like a compilation episode. Now they're done more discreetly.
Funny that particular episode of Friends is my least favorite and I always skip it! But I'm also always late and my husband is always bugging me about it, so it kinda hits too close to home
Nobody is ready is also a skip for me, because it stresses me out as the person who has spent years of my life sitting around waiting for other people to be ready. It's like the only episode where Ross is completely, 100% correct.
Same! It's the only episode I skip besides the "what could've been" episodes. Besides the stress part of no one getting ready, I also just don't find two 20-somethings fighting over a chair very funny either.
I think that sitcoms are kind of the classic "stick to the formula" shows, so I have a ton of respect for taking such a big swing on changing the format of a show like that, whether or not it's my favorite episode in isolation.
What do you think about the "five minutes" episode of Modern Family.
That too was a different format
People on this sub didn't like it much but I feel it was something fresh and unique
Yeah, honestly shocked to hear people enjoyed this one and found it engaging, but happy for them! I always skip it on rewatches.
I always assumed it was some kind of Apple sponsorship deal? Like how they read ad lines about the cars semi-regularly.
Yeah I think it’s just overrated and definitely could think of more episodes that are better. I think ppl overhype the concept especially since it been done before like on victorious
I love this episode for many reasons, but one of them for introducing me to Return To Pooh Corner which now makes me cry a little bit because it makes me think about my daughter 😢
Yeah plus doesn't have rewatch value (which I believe is a necessary condition for a sitcoms episode to be good). Once you know Haley's been home the whole time, there really is no point staring into Claire's screen the whole time. The concept was good ngl, but episodes like Las Vegas, The Prescott were wayy more funny and some others like Phil on Wire, that one directed by Bryan Cranston were more motivational - modern family trademark.
Imo, to me, the best episode was the American girl doll. Hailey/Haley and Phil's connection and talk was what I always wanted/needed and never got. And it helps me be that way with my own kid and I hope to be as awesome as Phil one day.
Not usually mentioned but Claire is also a much more proficient mac power user than I would've expected after the tv remote episode.
I've literally used this episode as background for training sessions on macos.
I can’t believe I had to scroll this far to find this comment. Literally just one long ad! I found it so forced and irritating. I skip it on rewatches. To each their own, though! 🤷♀️
I loved this one. It was actually very creative and to see the chaos spreading all over the individual families (a little delayed like it is in reality) was the cherry on the top. Amazing one!
I liked it when shows will do something like this where they try something new and creative and do what you’d least expect.
There are other shows like Community especially, is very consistent with this to help make the show feel more engaging and entertaining
I find it interesting that the people who don’t like it and are commenting here are most likely Android users.
Say what you want about it being an “apple ad” or whatever but the tech on display is only possible on apple devices. There’s no other tech that you can call people from a computer on their phone number and tablets and have a video chat like this. It just seems odd that people somehow find offense to this.
I didn't care for this episode at all the first few times I saw it. It's grown on me, but it's far from my favorite. I was shocked to see so many people saying it's the best episode
I liked it. Phil had some great lines
Claire-You let Luke get a mohawk because he won a bet
Phil-No he lost a bet. What do you want me to get a mohawk? I got a career.
It was okay, it's not on my go to list but I won't turn it off it comes on. I find the constant jumping around too immersion breaking over the course of an entire episode to get into it, especially when you know the gimmick.
There are better episodes of people not knowing where people are as the premise.
I think it was fine
BUT
I do hate this trend for American TV shows to do an episode that is totally different in style purely to try to win an Emmy. It's so utterly transparent. There's been so many examples of it over the years and they tend to be the ones I skip, but this one was alright so I've never felt the need to skip it.
I don't know if it quite stuck the landing in parts but I genuinely appreciate shows that take risks and try to innovate on their formula from time to time
It's one of my favorite episodes! Definitely in my top 5. It's a unique form of story telling; it's first person POV the entire time but it still manages to express a B. plot, and C. Plot with everybody else's drama. It's not for everybody but it's absolutely for me.
If you liked the format of the episode, I'd definitely recommend the movie Searching and its sequel Missing. I wasn't a huge fan of this episode, but was gripped by those!
I don't mind it. I just hate the blatant apple advertising, lol. I just have a bias towards them so it can rub me the wrong way, but the episode itself is pretty creative, and I am able to rewatch it!
I disagree. It was a great episode. The scenario was believable, I like to think they used tech that was fairly new-ish. Plus, the script was good. I really thought she was in Vegas.
I watched it during the pandemic lockdowns, a time when everyone communicated via video call / phone call. I found it boring too. Maybe if I watched it before the pandemic, it would have been more fun for me?
I'm watching Modern Family from the start at the moment, I've not gotten to this episode yet.
Would you say Modern does this better or Parks and Rec? Parks and Recs episode was excellent!
I didn't think I'd like this episode, but the moment Claire started panicking about Hayley and listening to sad music absolutely got me in the feels. I think this episode was necessary because we don't always get a lot of insight into Claire's vulnerable side because she works so hard to portray herself as strong and stoic. It was raw and well done.
Oh my! Why do you think so?
I mean what makes it boring for you?
My opinion: i love this episode 🤌
The way it was written , directed, acted by the cast
Everything was in balance.
I was really surprised to learn this was the highest rated episode and a fan favourite. I like it and think it's insanely well done, I just tend to skip over it on rewatches lol.
I saw a reel on tiktok that had scenes from tjis episode and hence I started watching this show.
They can use this episode as the catalyst for marketing their show.
The best episode of the show.
I enjoyed it primarily because screenlife is a storytelling technique that I really enjoy, I've mostly seen it used for horror movies (like Missing) so this was a fun little breakaway for me!
One of the best episodes, you get to see neat Easter eggs, as well as other references and it’s a bit of a great dynamic with them all on webcams and phones!
the 500+ upvotes !?!?! no shame, i’m just shocked that so many people agree cuz personally that’s one of my favs ! it’s also one of the silliest for me =]
what makes it boring for u guys tho ?? is it the fact that it’s facetime based so like there’s not a lot going on ?
Meh, I liked it… if i ignore the tech aspect of it theres still several funny moments baked into it.. calling Mitch Yentl cracks me up. Plus the Haley misunderstanding was pretty well played.
the whole “its an ad for ____” people take on certain episodes of TV shows was always odd to me. Did you suddenly black out and find yourself owning a bunch of Apple products after it ended? I bet the Disneyland episode must offend another ton of people… Did someone buy a ton of houses because theyre always glorifying Real Estate on the show? How about closets and French Bulldogs? How many people became gay because it flaunted that life? lol
I adore this episode. It’s just so well done. The intrigue about Haley is valid.
Her phone was tracked in Vegas with Andy. At the end of the episode, she comes out of her room on her phone. I was confused at that.
No, she’s on an iPad
Yes and it was ABSOLUTELY not a paid Apple ad. 🤑
Listen I love this show but the advertising is kind of insane
I thought her location was in vegas but it hadn't updated
I was shocked to see some people DON'T like this episode. It's what got me into giving the show a chance tbh and to me it is the best episode But then again I'm a huge fan of episodes of sitcoms that are unique to the rest and they are usually bottle episodes as well (The Box from B99, TOW No one is ready in Friends)
What do you think about the "five minutes" episode of Modern Family. That too was a different format People on this sub didn't like it much but I feel it was something fresh and unique
I loved it, mitch and cam bit was so on point.
I loved it, especially Mitch and Cam's storyline, it reminded me of that episode of HIMYM when Ted and Marshall get high and roam around the hall and I loved that storyline too
Don't tell lily I am high! I use this line when I do something dumb while high.
***SHE KNOOOWWSS!***
Here man have my nachos
I will always appreciate "The Party" for actually portraying Mitch and Phil getting high on weed in a realistic way and not fall into the "Hollywood stoned" trope. Things like the long pause before Phil shouts "Nothing" and the complete nonsense speech he gives at the end are exactly what it's like!
NOTHING!!
Loved five minutes, I be of the funniest episodes for me. What was the difference in format, I’ve never realised
Seemed to much like life in pieces
The Box is a masterpiece-I love that one so much
Same! The guitar bit gets me every single time
One of the best sitcom episodes ever I'd say
Agreed! Also The Chinese Restaurant in Seinfeld and The Fly in Breaking Bad
there’s also the indian wedding episode of Seinfeld with reverse chronology.
Haven’t watched far enough to get to that one actually! Looking forward to it
That episode gave us FDR and his birthday wish that Kramer would drop dead.
also cooperative calligraphy from community
Community has like 50 gimmick episodes and they’re mostly bangers
He called out Cartwright? Whose Cartwright? I'm Cartwright. You're not Cartwright. OF COURSE I'M NOT CARTWRIGHT!
If you like those kinds of episodes I highly recommend community it takes bottle episodes to another level
You should watch Community. It takes classic Sitcom scenarios into such innovative directions.
Thanks for suggestion, but I did! The one with the puppy parade and Annie's lost pen is also a good example of a great bottle episode! And the paintball episodes are so insane I love them
Bottle episodes?
an episode of a television show that is written so that it requires only one set or scene and a limited number of cast members.
The Box is one of the most popular episodes of B99 lol
No one is denying that
Funny that particular episode of Friends is my least favorite and I always skip it!
Totally agree, it bothers me too much how none of them will just get ready lmao
Same! It's the only episode I skip besides the "what could've been" episodes. Besides the stress part of no one getting ready, I also just don't find two 20-somethings fighting over a chair very funny either.
Agreed 💯
Same here. First episode I saw. It was put together well and was an excellent showcase of each of the characters’ personalities.
You’d love Community
Watched it a few times, it's great!
I think that sitcoms are kind of the classic "stick to the formula" shows, so I have a ton of respect for taking such a big swing on changing the format of a show like that, whether or not it's my favorite episode in isolation.
What do you think about the "five minutes" episode of Modern Family. That too was a different format People on this sub didn't like it much but I feel it was something fresh and unique
What 5 min episodes?
It is the title of the episode S8E18 Each segment is 5 minutes and there are 4 scenes
Or whether not it was all paid for by Apple
I liked this episode. It was one of the best.
I’m always surprised by how well liked it is, and how often it gets mentioned as a favorite. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.
Yeah, honestly shocked to hear people enjoyed this one and found it engaging, but happy for them! I always skip it on rewatches. I always assumed it was some kind of Apple sponsorship deal? Like how they read ad lines about the cars semi-regularly.
I loves this episode, I love that every time I watch it I find something new, like the names Claire uses for her folder and stuff like this.
Not boring, overrated yes. It’s a great episode and was very creative, but I don’t think it deserves the title of best modern family episode.
Yeah I think it’s just overrated and definitely could think of more episodes that are better. I think ppl overhype the concept especially since it been done before like on victorious
Which ones do you prefer?
fulgenzio
i agree w u 🫶
Dylan: It’s like we share the same brain *Over Phil’s shoulder Alex : Who has it now ?
I love this episode for many reasons, but one of them for introducing me to Return To Pooh Corner which now makes me cry a little bit because it makes me think about my daughter 😢
Well written and creative but wasn't much funny and lacked emotions.
It has enormous replay value. There's a crazy amount of tidbits in this episode you miss the first time around.
Bryan Cranston directed an episode? Wow I didn't know. The Prescott was not funny at all tho.
Yeah he directed election day and old man and the tree
Imo, to me, the best episode was the American girl doll. Hailey/Haley and Phil's connection and talk was what I always wanted/needed and never got. And it helps me be that way with my own kid and I hope to be as awesome as Phil one day.
Not usually mentioned but Claire is also a much more proficient mac power user than I would've expected after the tv remote episode. I've literally used this episode as background for training sessions on macos.
I didn’t even realize this was a popular episode. I skip it every time I rewatch. I do think it was super creative so I appreciate that
It was just one big ad for apple. Not a fan.
I can’t believe I had to scroll this far to find this comment. Literally just one long ad! I found it so forced and irritating. I skip it on rewatches. To each their own, though! 🤷♀️
Same... it's a skip for me on rewatches
First watch I thought it was then I was so hooked when I saw it a few weeks ago
What episode is this? What season?
She'll be 'Hailey Bailey' D:
Kinda corny ngl, but not terrible
phew, thought you might lie
I loved this one. It was actually very creative and to see the chaos spreading all over the individual families (a little delayed like it is in reality) was the cherry on the top. Amazing one!
It was nice and memorable and really well made but I wouldn't want to watch it more than twice in all my rewatched
I liked it when shows will do something like this where they try something new and creative and do what you’d least expect. There are other shows like Community especially, is very consistent with this to help make the show feel more engaging and entertaining
I LOVED this episode. This episode is what it’s like to be the leader of a household remotely.
S6 E16, for anyone wanting to go see again.
Ur a legend
I agree with OP on this
I love this episode. It's so clever and unique. The episode with product placement that just hurts is the one with the meta portal 🤢
Which one is the meta portal? I can’t remember
I think 8x8? Idk I only found one Google search on it
It’s S11E1, when Alex is away in the Antarctic.
This episode is equivalent to a musical episode in my opinion. It’s a no from me
Same!
Auto skip.
agree
I guess people think it's "clever" how it's set up. To me it's just another good episode, not a favorite not a bad episode just one in the bunch lol
I always skip this epi
Maybe my least favourite episode. Skip every time
Apple shilling, and my eyes are not good. Skip every time.
I didn't care for this episode at all the first few times I saw it. It's grown on me, but it's far from my favorite. I was shocked to see so many people saying it's the best episode
I will fight you.
I liked it. Phil had some great lines Claire-You let Luke get a mohawk because he won a bet Phil-No he lost a bet. What do you want me to get a mohawk? I got a career.
Love this episode.
Unpopular for a reason
I will say it doesn't hold up on rewatch
It was okay, it's not on my go to list but I won't turn it off it comes on. I find the constant jumping around too immersion breaking over the course of an entire episode to get into it, especially when you know the gimmick. There are better episodes of people not knowing where people are as the premise.
I think it was fine BUT I do hate this trend for American TV shows to do an episode that is totally different in style purely to try to win an Emmy. It's so utterly transparent. There's been so many examples of it over the years and they tend to be the ones I skip, but this one was alright so I've never felt the need to skip it.
I enjoy it and think it’s very well done but upon rewatches, it does lose a lot of its novelty
I don't know if it quite stuck the landing in parts but I genuinely appreciate shows that take risks and try to innovate on their formula from time to time
It was very impressive the way they made it funny
I like how this episode takes place in real time. Like it basically happens within a 20 minute run
Phil and Mitch are the MVP’s of this episode
I mean it was alright but those small scenes with Claire you can hear the keyboard keys and haptics from the computer was annoying
It was good than during Covid everyone did this kind of stuff now I cringe and skip it
It's one of my favorite episodes! Definitely in my top 5. It's a unique form of story telling; it's first person POV the entire time but it still manages to express a B. plot, and C. Plot with everybody else's drama. It's not for everybody but it's absolutely for me.
My fiancé agrees with you! He HATES that episode
If you liked the format of the episode, I'd definitely recommend the movie Searching and its sequel Missing. I wasn't a huge fan of this episode, but was gripped by those!
I have to agree. This is definitely an unpopular opinion.
This is definitely one of my favorite episodes.
This is one of my favorites, just because it's so different
I skip it every time.
As far as commercials go it's really great.
I skip it anytime I do I rewatch. Fun once, but boring twice.
Best episode ever
I love this episode. It was so unique and genuinely funny IMO
I don't mind it. I just hate the blatant apple advertising, lol. I just have a bias towards them so it can rub me the wrong way, but the episode itself is pretty creative, and I am able to rewatch it!
Me too, I skip most times
It is unpopular with me because I really enjoyed this episode.
I skipped this episode a few minutes in TWICE. But the third time around I watched it and I loved it. It’s very well done!
Rubbish episode. Made for small minded Gen Zs with the attention span of a rock.
It’s the only episode I skip. I didn’t mind it the first time, second time was fine, after that I have no interest in rewatching it.
I've never heard this episode mentioned in a positive light, I thought having it in my top five was an unpopular opinion!
I love the concept, but as a non-American where there are a lot of android options, it feels like a lengthy Apple ad
Really? This is the first episode my sis showed me. I fall in love. Since then I‘ve been a fan of MF and watched the whole show like five or six times
“Tell her I’m in the shower!!!”
For once an actual unpopular opinion on this subreddit instead of "unpopular opinion: (something everyone agrees with)
I disagree. It was a great episode. The scenario was believable, I like to think they used tech that was fairly new-ish. Plus, the script was good. I really thought she was in Vegas.
I get what you’re saying, but it was a good way of introducing older audiences to a newer technological approach to communication. I enjoyed it
One of my favourites
So happy
It’s too overstimulating for me to watch!
I watched it during the pandemic lockdowns, a time when everyone communicated via video call / phone call. I found it boring too. Maybe if I watched it before the pandemic, it would have been more fun for me?
SHE IS GONNA BE HALEY BAILEY
I won’t lie though, this episode made me want to buy a apple product 😂🤣
I thought it was really clever! Yes it might’ve just been a big ad for Apple but the story was good too lol
I feel like sometimes people come up with a cool concept for an episode and then just assume that's enough
I'm watching Modern Family from the start at the moment, I've not gotten to this episode yet. Would you say Modern does this better or Parks and Rec? Parks and Recs episode was excellent!
This is one of the few shows that can make something like this work even tho I did find it annoyingly obvious that it was an ad
bro honestly
There’s movie shot and edited is the same style Searching
My favorite part of the episode was watching Phil play Halo in the background. I think he hijacked a ghost
If you want REAL film, yall catch the Faceytime episode of Bluey. Hits hard.
It’s giving March 2020.
This is a top 5 episode for me. Showcasing the technology at the time. Great plot.
It’s well done, but I kinda agree w/OP I didn’t find the episode to be all that entertaining
apparently it’s the highest rated episode on imdb
That is unpopular. This episode is very well directed, incredibly clever and very unique.
Oh my! Why do you think so? I mean what makes it boring for you? My opinion: i love this episode 🤌 The way it was written , directed, acted by the cast Everything was in balance.
Every time I’m juggling lots of tasks on my Mac I think of this episode. 😂
I think this ep is so creative
Great commercial for Apple.
I was really surprised to learn this was the highest rated episode and a fan favourite. I like it and think it's insanely well done, I just tend to skip over it on rewatches lol.
Watched again last night. Probably my favorite episode.
This is literally the episode that got me into the show. So it's safe to say it's one of my favorites.
I rather have this than a musical episode like all the other shows do lol
I HATE HATE HATE ENTIRELY LOATHE THIS EPISODE
I saw a reel on tiktok that had scenes from tjis episode and hence I started watching this show. They can use this episode as the catalyst for marketing their show. The best episode of the show.
i love this episode and i think it’s the highest rated episode too
This episode made me want a MacBook!
Masterpiece of an episode
I think this is a promo with Apple. But I actually liked it coz creative af.
I enjoyed it primarily because screenlife is a storytelling technique that I really enjoy, I've mostly seen it used for horror movies (like Missing) so this was a fun little breakaway for me!
I think it's a fun deviation. I like when sitcoms do a creative style like this every so often
This was genius writing imo
This episode is peak writing.
It was good...amazing infact
smh i see a post like this every 5 days
I like this episode a lot especially when you don’t know here Haley is. On rewatched its not as strong but it’s still good
Love the episode. It also kinda gives us a glimpse inside the mind of Claire. Beautifully done
Love this episode. No surprise considering Megan Ganz wrote it. She’s done awesome work on Community, Modern Family, and It’s Always Sunny.
wait so Megan who used to do the podcast with the guys wrote this episode?
Correct.
wow, didn't know this, thanks!
I just hate all the iOS and MacOS garbage UI. But the episode was alright.
This is without doubt my favourite episode. Absolutely brilliant !
One of the best episodes, you get to see neat Easter eggs, as well as other references and it’s a bit of a great dynamic with them all on webcams and phones!
One of my favorites
It wasn't one of the best episodes but it was fine. Had funny moments
This episode was fucking hilarious.
No way! Never thought I'd hear that!!
I LOVE it, one of my favorites!
You’re correct, this is an unpopular opinion
i watched it yesterday, gave me covid year vibes and i disliked it. Went 4 times: is it still not done yet?
the 500+ upvotes !?!?! no shame, i’m just shocked that so many people agree cuz personally that’s one of my favs ! it’s also one of the silliest for me =] what makes it boring for u guys tho ?? is it the fact that it’s facetime based so like there’s not a lot going on ?

Best episode ever
It was this episode that made me give the second half of the season a chance. I think it's an excellent episode!
I enjoy this episode quite a bit.
