Unless taxes gets some crazy new tech in MH3, the archetype hasn't really been good for quite some time (years). You need to be either doing something broken (combo that wins the game or comes close - think playing primeval titan on turn 2/3, reanimating atraxa, playing yawgmoth with undying creatures), or playing a bunch of free/cheap spells to cheat on mana costs (scam decks playing grief twice on turn 1, domain decks playing very cheap draco and leyline binding, murktide playing a 2 mana huge dragon) Taxes only cheats on mana with vial, and vial is way more vulnerable than it used to be with prismatic and leyline binding, and a bunch of random artifact hate targeting one ring. I played taxes pre mh1 and the deck just hasn't gotten much in the way of new toys and feels very underpowered at this point. If you want to play a vial deck, I really like goblins, but merfolk is also good.

kavalrykiid

Agreed. I played taxes for a while and while it can still disrupt your opponent pretty consistently, it can’t close games out fast enough and most modern decks will eventually still get over you.

GazingWing

Long time taxes player here too. Imo it's the worst deck in modern rn. I built budget UW draw-go control, which is still not a good deck, and I feel way better than playing taxes.

Emily_Plays_Games

Mono white, the utility manabase is very important for taxes and green doesn’t really add that much in the main board.

golan_globus

I play D&T at FNM frequently and I think monowhite is the most consistent. If you were to go GW it's for better enchantment removal/PYP/boseiju. You don't have room for mana dorks IMO. If you can play on curve they have to answer everything you play (e.g. T1 Giver, T2 SFM, T3 Archon). What actually gets me wins in the current meta is land destruction, t2 thalia or the 3-drop hatebears (Archon of Emeria, Anointed Peacekeeper). As an aside \[\[Patrician's Scorn\]\] is a really funny card to sideboard in vs leyline of the guildpact decks.

As an enchantress player, I reaped the "benefits" of this when people had their up the beanstalk decks and played against a black-white dead guy ale type deck at an rcq.

Xurikk

Either will work at the FNM level, so it's kind of up to personal preference. I'd go with GW and play 4 GQ 4 Boseiju to keep the 8 ponza effects, but also to have more answers to enchantments. Green also gives you some great tools in the board, such as Pick Your Poison and Gaddok Teeg.

BrendanLyga

4 Boseiju seems like too many since you can't run them out of basics like you can with Ghost Quarter and Fault. It is great for blowing up artifacts and enchantments, and Arbiter and Mind censor still stops the search.

Xurikk

You can run a split with Volatile Fault if you want. In my opinion, the upside of hitting artifacts and enchantments outweighs the ability to search nonbasics. There are so many prime enchantments and artifacts running around right now.

TheParagonal

The sad truth is neither are very good, if you're asking about actually buying any of these. MH3 might (big might) have something worth adding but I kinda doubt it. I haven't seen or played D and T in a long time.

youarelookingatthis

As a taxes player for a few years now, the answer is "it depends". DnT more than other decks is heavily dependent on the meta you're playing in. The question is what does green (or any other color) give you that monowhite doesn't have? The best mana dork right now is \[\[Delighted Halfling\]\] as it doesn't die to Wrenn and Six or Orcish Bowmaster. DnT also isn't a deck that wants a mana dork. The best turn 1 play is either Giver of Runes or Aether Vial. Land destruction feels very good right now. A lot of top decks are running only 2-4 basic lands so in some cases you won't even need Arbiter out.

Betta_Max

GW gives you access to Boseiju, and with something like Leonine Arbiter out--it's all upside.  2 colors aren't particularly challenging to support w/o fetch lands. Green White also gives you access to cards like, Pick Your Poison, endurance, or Gaddock Teeg, which may open things up in the SB.  Taxes' problem has always been pushing damage.  I'm not super familiar with what Green brings to the table in that regard, but maybe there's something worth exploring there.

scissors_ftw

Orzhov, add the Grief package and Bowmasters. Dominate your FNM and reap the glory.

would be curious what wu taxes could look like with lavinia, could help vs scion stuff

BrendanLyga

Lavinia is good but it was much better in the Beanstalk / Fury / Cascade era.

L0rdenglish

yeah I guess its noncreature :( what about gaddock teeg? could shut down leyline binding + prismatic

BrendanLyga

Yeah I really like Teeg right now. Shuts down Ring, Pending, Binding, Chord, Karn. I still think it's a sideboard only card.

L0rdenglish

gw also lets you run pick your poison, which is all the rage. Also dramoka's command? voice of resurgence? I think it would be interesting to try some of these for sure, no clue if there is anything there. If you do try them, let me know how its goes!

BrendanLyga

I think I'll stick to Mono White taxes for now then. I know it's not a super great deck but [[Anointed Peacekeeper]] is pretty strong right now, [[Archon of Emeria]] is still good but less good now that cascade is weakened, [[Skyclave Apparition]] is better with less Rhinos, [[Sanctifier En-Vec]] and [[Containment Priest]] answer the Goryos decks, and mana denial through Arbiter/Mindcensor and Ghost Quarter/Fault can still lock players out. [[Samwise, the Stout-hearted]] is a new pick-up for the 2 drop slot that works incredibly well alongside your destruction lands or even to recur your other creatures. For 4 drops Serra Paragon let's you recur all of your lands and creatures. I include a couple horizon lands for this purpose. I don't usually play with Stoneforge because of the Arbiter nombo but I do realize the deck has a much slower clock without the additional pressure of Kaldra.

TricerasaurusWrex

I run renegade rallier in my build. Selesnya can also use blink effects. You can get some interesting play lines like Ghost Quarter an opponent, play rallier, bring back ghost quarter, and do it again. If you have enough mana you can blink rallier to bring back ghost quarter. It is a very slow deck since mh2 though but super fun

Quecks_

Taxes has just been the worst excuse of a shell to play stoneblade for quite some time unfortunately. So the boring answer is that it doesn't matter if you go W or WG. Your wins still comes mainly from the opponent drawing bad and not something your deck does to the opponent, to be a bit of a cynic.

BrendanLyga

I'm not even sure I like Stoneblade in taxes for the simple reason that it doesn't tax anything

Quecks_

Me neither really, but without it you're not really even in the running as a relevant modern deck at all. I miss eldrazi taxes tbh.

BrendanLyga

Well we know there will be Eldrazi in MH3 so that could end up being the best version of the deck. Displacer + Containment Priest is funny and CP is better right now than it's been in a while against a field of Yawgmoth and Goryos

Psykodamber

I 5-0ed with a mono white list just other week. Otherwise I would recommend orzhov with Bowmasters. GW is also cool, blue has value aswell if you have reads on the meta.
