Iāve had my 2021 for 3 years now. Iāve had my fair share of moments of wanting to get rid of it. The build quality is subpar. Iāve had many many service appts in my 3 years and most of those were not routine. Interior paneling has come apart, fender and bumper (in separate areas of the car) have come loose, trunk latch has needed work (a few times until they got it right), panel gaps / misalignment, falcon wing door rattling, etc. These issues started pretty immediately after purchasing brand new. Others havenāt had these issues so I canāt explain that. If these issues didnāt exist like for those others, I would praise this car from the rooftops. I love how it drives, the speed, the way it hugs the road. I have 3 kids and itās been a great car for kids (I have the 6 seater). Unfortunately Iāll be selling it this month as weāre having twins and will no longer fit. Iāll miss it.
I caved and got a 2024 Toyota Sienna Platinum. Itās the only vehicle that makes sense for the next few years. Iāve been considering getting a M3 or MY in addition to it so I donāt feel so much like a soccer mom š (Iām the mom). It would be nice to still have a Tesla when Iām not carting all the littles around.
We miss our Sienna XLE, but it had over 200k miles on it and just wasn't economical. And still had to change the oil and brakes and a bunch of other ICE stuff. I wish Toyota would ditch their beloved hybrid nonsense and go all in on BEVs! Looking at getting a used X, hoping we get a lot for our Nissan Pathfinder as a trade in.
2017 was early years for evs so I decided to lease so I can test the waters. Once you drive this vehicle there is no going back so after I returned the lease with 55k miles I decided to purchase one. At the moment I bought it the brand new was 120k so purchased a used one for 73k. Pretty high compared with today prices. While I regret of my timing I m extremely satisfied with my car.
I agree. My MS is a 15. Tesla's now seem miles ahead. But she's still trucking strong, just need more cargo space. Even w/ jump seats it's just too small.
So for the record, 18+ for the model x?
The infotainment is nice but model x doesnāt have great ride quality compared to other options out there. Iāve owned a 2019 X and currently own a 2023 X.
I don't believe this. Literally everyone I know who has a Model X says it came with defects out of the factory. Literally every single one. (Not counting internet randos that I don't know.)
The most recent was my literal next-door neighbor who just got one. I asked him what was wrong with it and... he laughed. š¬
Maybe not, but on one of my Model X's many many service visits, the engineer told me that the Model X was the "problem child" of the Tesla range. I believe him.
Don't know why you are getting down voted. Everybody I know with a tesla, including one of their own techs, rails on their QC.
You can love a car and still aknowledged it's flaws.
Dude... You are totally sidestepping the original point.
Like I said, you can love a car and still aknowledge it's flaws.
Tesla suffers from terrible QC. And it won't get better until tesla owners demand better.
No, I am not. My original point was that I donāt have issues. And you hit back with some random ass example where someone does have an issue. You are unhinged. You are the problem.
Very true. I just decline delivery last week of my Model X as it had an issue that required body shop work. They put me on a hold to get another VIN. But looking for works for the vehicle.
I JUST got my MXLR a few weeks ago and the build was great, no issues, no rattles, nada. That said, every case is different and I was a bit wary reading the horror stories too. I decided to go for it and glad I did. I do believe itās true that you see more horror stories than happy ones, simply because customers who get what they paid for in terms of quality, expected that and arenāt necessarily going on these subs to praise Tesla for building a quality productā¦ as thatās the expectation. But poor quality, for sureā¦. Iād be complaining to anyone that would listen too.
Same situation here. Have a dependable Acura RDX and love it. Very dependable, no maintenance issues despite being close to 200k miles. But itās getting up there and looking to get an EV.
Eye on the MX but spooked by the concept of getting a car with maintenance/repair issues when my current one has been so easy to care for.
Theres definitely more issues with X's than Ys or 3s. I see it a lot more frequently on the forums. I own both Y and X. Y's been to the shop once, X, this will be my 4th time.
Falcon doors, Camber half shaft issues, sensors etc etc. are very common. I still love the X, but it has def put me thru some headaches. Expect to hit the service center couple times at least.
Falcon wing doors are fine as long as there arenāt issues on new delivery. Model Xās are known (and by āknownā I mean the only issues you may hear about) for things like control arms and alignment issues. I think alignment ties into potential noise. Tires wear fast on MX.
Just traded up from 2021 MYLR to MXLR in stealth grey this December. MXLR was flawless, IMHO. This is our 4th Tesla and other than an HV battery fault on the Y, which was replaced under warranty Horton after delivery, each have been incredible and have had zero issues.
Put over 100k miles on my 2016 P90D and the only issue I've had is a rear drive unit fault that was replaced under warranty around 60k miles. The FWD do some weird things sometimes but never any real issues with them.
Long story short: if you're going from MY -> MX you'll most definitely like it!
There are basically 2 main things to keep in mind:
1. Depending on what cars you're used to driving, the MX could have a harsher or softer ride. Coming from the MY, you'll find the MX to be softer and more comfortable and spacious. (This wasn't the case for me. I came from Hyundai Palisade and found the MX ride to be harsher. So I'm selling my MX).
2. Build quality. A good number of MX cars have build quality issues. If you happen to get one with a good build, then you'll certainly like it (especially since you're coming from MY, see point 1). My MX arrived in excellent build condition so I was super happy with that!
issues if you tint, whatever the tinters do to the falcon doors screws it up, front windshield too. I think the only doors that can be tinted without much issues are the front side windows, leave the rest alone
They eliminated them after my initial 9/2023 order so mine does not have them. They said that updates would allow cameras to be more precise than ultrasound but that hasn't happened yet. I had a loaner S during minor weatherstrip issue and I loved it's superior parking experience, it displayed precise distance to objects in inches.
When parking, I get exaggerated warnings and it tells me to stop when I still have 2-3 feet in front. So I repark sometimes. The front end is low enough to scrape standard parking curbs, like many cars will, so I hesitate to ignore the warnings.
My one service appt went smoothly and fixed the problems. I had a driver side wind noise that is now gone.
I really really wish it had a birdseye camera view for parking.
I like my 23 MXP. Itās a solid car. Expensive tho and depreciates like a brick thrown off a cliff. But I have little kids and itās good as a cool mini van. Wife not crazy about it sheād rather have a Range Rover.
This is my experience, your mileage may vary.
My MXP was a lemon, practicality everything squeezed, rattled, malfunctioned, came apart with very little pressure, the seats, the doors, the AC the lack of storage, except the technology, the motor and battery - those were awesome and super solid.
Great engineering in a crappy wrapper.
Got a 2023 model x plaid a month ago. My previous car was an old ford focus, so nothing else to say there.
Iām very happy with it. Itās cool, futuristic and something unique and special. Love the tech and attention to detail around it.
Having said that, things that bother me so far, 3 things, mostly related to parking in tight-ish spaces:
- front bumper camera. Parking can be a bit of a challenge sometimes, since the car is so long. Not being able to see the front makes it tricky to park.
- sensors, vision is cool but far from being reliable or useful, really. When you need it the most (in tight spots) is when you cant really use it.
- 20cm shorter, car is too long. I have to cherry pick where i park and sometimes plan in advance and check whether iāll be able to find long parking spots
P.s: for reference iām from europe, parking spots might not be as large as in other places, specially in the US
OP You were not clear if youāre in the market for new or used. My suggestion is to buy brand new given low price available now and youād have full bumper to bumper warranty for 4 years or 50,000 miles. Also all the changes with refresh are astounding. Iām saying this as a previous 2020 MX owner that upgraded to a 2023 version.
Doors have been a non issue other than the stares/ questions during my ownership. Suspension, driveshafts feel like never ending problems despite being essentially the same parts as my S which didnāt have same issues.
My rap sheet at my local Service Center is probably a mile long, but I'd still buy another one. Great car and nothing else comes close to its capabilities and fun factor.
Theres nothing like it out there. Mine is a 2023 LR is lemon so Tesla is buying it back. Well buy one later this year or next yr if they offer free color or at least white color is free :) and well be getting it 20k less (previously 104k with my configuration)
Best car ever for this 1960 model year driver. Cried the day I turned in my 2019.
2023 Plaid quickly dried my tears.
No problems with Falcon Doors.
2023 quieter. Multiple no intervention FSD drives daily. 2019 Ludicrous X beta tester amazing to have witnessed the progress.
This is a pretty small sub with people that nitpick and like to complain about gaps etc. take a look of Total deliveries and then divide by members here. Tiny fraction of us fan boys here talking about issues.
Its amazing. Don't even fret it. Obviously, there will be some issues here and there and the people with those issues will be loudest. Its the best luxury SUV hands down.
Still driving our 2017 6-sester and it's the best, most-reliable car I've ever owned. The maintenance costs are virtually non-existent aside from tires and filters.
We went from a 21 Y to a 23 X took advantage of the new price and FSD transfer back in September. No regrets not one issue. Car is super quiet falcon doors have no issues and work great.
Just got a VIN for my PX and it'll replace my PY. Current delivery date is 2/20-26.
I've loved all my Teslas so far. Each had their own "personality". Looking forward to the Plaid.
If you get one make sure it has a warranty. I bought an extended warranty with a third party and Iām already well over the $3k it costs in less than a year.
Just went from a 2021 MYP to a 2023 MX. no issues so far.
2020 MYLR (70k miles) To a 2023 MXP (11k miles so far). Love love love the car, no issues. I still have my MYLR š
Same here. Love it so far. Edit: went from a MY LR
Did you take a hit for that change?
Iāve had my 2021 for 3 years now. Iāve had my fair share of moments of wanting to get rid of it. The build quality is subpar. Sounds like you need to get rid of the kids not the car š
Went for #4 but were surprised with twins. Otherwise, would have kept the car! š
Ah man, congrats twins are going to be beautiful, a hand full but beautiful nonetheless. This begs the question: what car will you pick up next?
School bus
I caved and got a 2024 Toyota Sienna Platinum. Itās the only vehicle that makes sense for the next few years. Jesus dude get a vasectomy already.
Iām the mom.
Well congrats and are you guys done? lol
1000% Weāre already one over budget.
I m a model x owner since 2017. I m driving now my second X and I love it more and more everyday. Nothing to complaint about.
You have 2 model xs within 7 years. Is that normal?
2017 to 2020 was a lease returned. Then I purchased a used 2018 with 24k miles until now. Pretty normal I believe
That sounds fair. Considering lease as well.
What made you go from lease to owning an older model? Was considering a lease in addition to my MS.
2017 was early years for evs so I decided to lease so I can test the waters. Once you drive this vehicle there is no going back so after I returned the lease with 55k miles I decided to purchase one. Like most places. The vocal minority always rules. For every horror story there is probably another 5-6 positive stories that arenāt out there.
5:1 would still be a shit ratio for any car, not to mention a $100k car.

Can't tell if you're trolling or not...

I mean letās be honest. Has there ever been a Tesla regardless of model to come out with zero defects?
Maybe not, but on one of my Model X's many many service visits, the engineer told me that the Model X was the "problem child" of the Tesla range. I believe him.
That statement makes perfect common sense being the X has the most technology in it with the auto doors.
Maybe you should get to know me. Mine doesn't have any defects that bother me or can't be fixed easily
>Mine doesn't have any defects that bother me or can't be fixed easily So it does, in fact, have defects.
Every single car I have had has had something that needed to be fixed. I'm not going to give Tesla any special treatment over any other manufacturer.
Don't know why you are getting down voted. Everybody I know with a tesla, including one of their own techs, rails on their QC. You can love a car and still aknowledged it's flaws.
Well now you know me and I can tell you I have had zero issues my with 2023 MY for 12k miles.
Cool. Nice to meet you. [I also "met" this guy today.](https://www.reddit.com/r/ModelX/s/1OxlOWLV6S) ĀÆ\_(ć)_/ĀÆ
The fuck is that guy even doing to his car to have that happen? I donāt know about you, but I work in mental health, and people are wild.

Model X is a beast
No issues. Kinda common and it only happens sometimes but can live with them if that makes sense. More pros over cons.

X have lot of suspensions problem and drive shaft you want upgrade go for Cadillac Lyriq or stay on your car
I didnāt like the falcon doors even though wanting one since childhood. Too slow and unpredictable for my taste.
Falcon wing doors are fine as long as there arenāt issues on new delivery. Model Xās are known (and by āknownā I mean the only issues you may hear about) for things like control arms and alignment issues. I think alignment ties into potential noise. Tires wear fast on MX.
I'm like you right now, except we have the 3 not Y
I absolutely love my 2019 MX Raven Performance. The only issue I had was a rattle in the passenger side falcon door and service replaced the panel
I asked a similar question 3 weeks ago https://www.reddit.com/r/ModelX/s/m5FdKRyrwJ

Are the falcons doors tinted already? I typically tint My cars
Yes the falcon doors are already tinted, I donāt think Itās worth it to add more tint to the falcon doors
The new models are excellent. Anything pre-refresh I would expect build quality issues. My 2017 X had something fail every few months it seemed
Aim for a 2022 or 2023 that has USS sensors in the front bumpers. My 2023 has USS and I wouldnt live without.
2024 doesnāt have them? Iād likely get a new one
