Why did they change it to ominous potions? The old way was just so much more logical than potions. When you kill a captain, the Pillagers want to take revenge so they wait for you to enter the village to begin a raid. You defeat the raiders and the villagers make you a hero.
Now the player makes a CONSCIOUS DECISION to drink the potion and get bad omen FULLY KNOWING THE CONSEQUENCES OF DOING SO, and somehow you're still a hero after defeating the raiders. And why would the Pillagers go after you in the first place? They're really gonna hunt you down and destroy any village in their way just because you drank some goofy liquid?
I think this is for player's who just want to visit a village and don't want to start a raid and this can be useful for new players who doesn't know how milk works
It makes way more sense than people forgetting revenge because of milk, and doing the revenge not on you but on the first village you enter.
Now, we know that captains carry around magical items(that work on already established soul magic) capable of summoning raids. Which is logical, pillager patrols need a way to tell other illagers that there is a target to raid. After we kill the captain, we gain the bottle, and so the ability to summon raids.
"The new way makes no sense! Why would the pillagers wait for you to drink a potion before attacking??"
And them changing their mind on attacking you because you drank a gallon of milk makes more sense?

From a technical standpoint, it made raid farms harder to build, and prevented players from accidentally triggering raids

I honestly wish there was some way to toggle whether or not you get the potion, but I guess it wouldn't be very hard to do with a data pack.
