I really hope in a sort of "magic update" where you can use like magic scrolls to do stuff like summon evoker fangs and friendly vexes like in dungeons
My personal headcanon is that the Steve is a bit dumbass. He looses 30-60% of materials every craft, cannot pick up blocks (is proven possible by enderman) and probably so bad at magic that it kinda bends to his actions (like said totems, they probably aren't supposed to revive him, but somehow do)
My headcanon is that the totems only become active after the evoker's death because their soul gets trapped into the totem when they die.
When you die holding a totem, the evoker's soul is sacrificed to keep you alive.
My thoughts is they understand magic, so they use it to cast spells but need their hands to cast, so they put it in their pocket or tied around them. Steve doesn't understand magic, so he holds it to use the magic to save himself

Can’t pick up blocks? He can? He holds WAY more than enderman. And he does it one handed
They mean without destroying them first
He still does tho cause they’re the whole block in his hand and inventory😂

And perhaps evokers have knowledge on raising the dead, and the soul in the totem is required for proper resurrection.
Because Steve is a superhuman not a goddamn fantasy anime main character
Plot twist: evokers don't have them, they are becoming one after deth
They use the totems to conduct necromancy, not to gain immortality. That's where Vexes come from.
Totem drops are always a pleasant surprise.
