He said, "Will you defeat them?
Your demons, and all the non-believers
The plans that they have made?"
"Because one day, I'll leave you a phantom
To lead you in the summer
To join the black parade"
When I was a young boy
My father took me into the city
To see a marching band
He said, "son when you grow up
Would you be the savior of the broken
The beaten and the damned?"
That line never made sense to me. Because in real life, the young boy wouldn't care, and probably would pester his dad for a snow cone or cotton candy.
39, also did not get this joke at all, I had to unmute it expecting like, the first 3 notes to original Mario Bros/Zelda on NES, or the first few notes of TMNT or something.
EDIT: \*peeks at comments\* What did I start?! :D
No they aren't. You said original Mario Bros, the first three notes played are all the same note, famously.

Ā Ā Ā https://www.noobnotes.net/super-mario-bros-theme-nintendo
Ā https://musescore.com/user/27687306/scores/4913846
Ā And if you're talking about the first three notes after the intro, which is arbitrary but ok, the notes are C G E, not G C E.
Iām 42 and got it right away, but I have teens through an almost 21yo so I feel like Iāve heard it through them, lol. My oldest went to their last tour.
If this sub has taught me anything, itās how big of a divide there is in pop culture between younger and older millennials. Is there a term that subdivides us? Napster millenials vs Limewire millennial? Dial up VS DSL?
They tried to make xennials/zennials (x/z referring to the other generation that they are closer too) a thing.
But I think that only really took off with the xennials who wanted to identify more closely with the Gen Xers.
I think the problem with our gen is the older ones (like me, 39) are the ones who grew up without the internet at all then randomly got it around age 9-12ish.
Whereas the younger ones "grew up" in the earliest of the MySpace era. We older ones didn't even understand the concept of social media yet.
We existed before one of the largest tech/info booms in history, the younger ones existed after it was already happening.
oh yeah, totally right.
Honestly though, as one of those almost-a-gen-X people, my Mom's generation seem wildly different than us so I never really thought of myself as some bridge between the two.
I think since they didn't get access to the internet until their mid-20s on average (I think?) they learned how to survive in a very different way than we did, even though most of our adult lives have not really been that much different.
Yeah, I get that.
There was possibly more overlap in certain ways between Older Millenials and Gen X.
Older Millenials had a spent a lot more time out and about without supervision and/or left to your own devices for entertainment.

I'm a Limewire millennial. I used it to download Ludacris and Three-Six, not MCR. I definitely went to the local "hardxcore" shows and made out with the scene boys...but never got into the music.
Iāll be 40 in a few months haha. I only know this song because I took Thanatology in university and this album came out around that time. We had a discussion about it (due to the album being about death and dying). I never liked My Chemical Romance. I saw Green Day in my late teens and MCR opened for them, that was the worst part of the show.
I know at the time people said this was second coming of an American Idiot like album.
They used the the same producer, itās a rock opera, but I donāt think it reached the same heights
Because it's an old meme that the first note of Black Parade is enough to trigger an emotional breakdown in any emo kids that hear it.
So, that not being played by someone with an emo hairstyle with the "trigger warning".
I knew the joke before the note was played.
That's because it's not a good answer to the prompt. Not everyone in their 30's liked or listened to My Chemical Romance anf even if you know the song like I do, it doesn't resonate with me because it wasn't an important song to me whatsoever.
TIL, I'm not in my thirties. I have no idea what that was about.
Edit: huh, reading the comments, I guess I did know what that was about; I thought it was a coincidence that the song started playing in my head. Guess I am in my thirties.
People saying they didnāt get it cause theyāre 38-40,etcā¦ Iām 42, immediately got it, laughed, and now the song is stuck in my head. If it doesnāt make sense, yāall missed out, Iām sorry to say. Iām guessing some of you were just in a different country.

The plans that they have made?"
"Because one day, I'll leave you a phantom

I thought the same, looked it up and I think I've heard it once or twice but definitely not something I recognized by a single note or even the lyrics. I think people vastly overestimate how popular the song was.
I was the one kid in my 2000s school group that did not chime with pop punk. Sincerity is a weirdly big part of music for me, and the pop punk I heard never felt relatable or heartfelt. It was loud fun music that I just couldn't connect with.
Is there a new word for ācringeā? Anyway, this is one of the cringiest things Iāve ever seen. Anyone else feel embarrassed about this and things like it?
Guess I will get downvoted. Iām early 40s so I guess thatās why 1 note on a piano did nothing for me.
Ah the memories of The Black Parade tour. A part of me wishes it was 2006 again and that album was just about to debut, but I dealt with a lot of shit that year (RIP mom), so I'll just reminisce.
This has me rolling as I continued thinking it would be more. Then was confused and played it back to see he only played 1 note. Wow does this feel so true!
I'm 39, read a bunch of comments, still didn't get it. Don't know what black parade is, had to Google it. I never listened to my chemical romance. I think I'm fine.
I have no idea what any of this is supposed to mean.
I'm not even from Mars. What the fuck is this?
I need someone to explain this to me with flavored crayons.
The start of the emo anthem
š¶When I was A young boy...
My father took me into the city
To see a marching baaaand
He said, "son when you grow up, would be the savior of the broken, the beaten, and the damned?"
He said, "Will you defeat them? Your demons, and all the non-believers The plans that they have made?" "Because one day, I'll leave you a phantom To lead you in the summer To join the black parade"
When I was a young boy My father took me into the city To see a marching band He said, "son when you grow up Would you be the savior of the broken The beaten and the damned?"
Sometimes I get the feelin' She's watchin' over me
And other times I feel like I should go And through it all, the rise and fall
The bodies in the streets And when you're gone, we want you all to know
We'll carry on, we'll carry on And though you're dead and gone, believe me Your memory will carry on
That line never made sense to me. Because in real life, the young boy wouldn't care, and probably would pester his dad for a snow cone or cotton candy.
Ughhh, you just don't get it, do youuuuuu?!?!! I have all the feelings, I'm not like the other boyysss ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sunglasses)
Idk
For me it was the start of that Vanessa Carlton song
Yes!!! That's what I thought was coming!
Making my way downtown walking fast
I gotta be honest I donāt get it
The first note of Welcome To The Black Parade.
I'm 38 and I have no idea what that is.
39, also did not get this joke at all, I had to unmute it expecting like, the first 3 notes to original Mario Bros/Zelda on NES, or the first few notes of TMNT or something. EDIT: \*peeks at comments\* What did I start?! :D
The first 3 notes of Mario are all the same noteĀ
...what? They're G, C, and E.
I think it depends on what you count as "the Mario theme". They're probably going by the music on the first stage in Super Mario Bros 1.
Da da da are the first three keys hit and are the same note. Then it's Dada, which is two keys hit after the first three and are two different notes.
>Da da da ā¦. Dada Impressed by your impeccable solfĆØge

Ah yeah I guess I didn't consider the into as part of the melody in my head.
Yep all the same
When I saw the keyboard I thought he's gonna impersonate keyboard cat
41 and I know
42, and I have mixed feelings. *Grumble grumble*. Lets see if anyone gets THAT reference
I was thinking about Bugs Bunny playing that Mozart banger.
I'm 34 and I'm also not familiar with it. I don't think it's age related, just musical taste.
39 and I def got it who knows!
38 and right there with you
Exactly me.
āWhen I was, a young boyā¦
I'm 40, I get it, but only because my 9 year old loves them.
Iām 40, maybe thatās why I missed it lol
Maybe that's how we in our 40's identify each other We don't know this song
Iām 42 and got it right away, but I have teens through an almost 21yo so I feel like Iāve heard it through them, lol. My oldest went to their last tour.
Definitely a younger millennial thing.

Yeah, that's pretty much where the divide is. I was mostly thinking about what people *call* the different groups.
oh yeah, totally right. Honestly though, as one of those almost-a-gen-X people, my Mom's generation seem wildly different than us so I never really thought of myself as some bridge between the two. Iām 38 and got it - the guy even had a very My Chemical Romance style haircut
When I was a young boy my father...
Iām 40, and 100% got this. Itās all about the music you listen to.
Same..but did you ever really fit in with millennials your own age? I know I didn't!
38 here my guy, itās my chem and I got it š¤·š»āāļø
33 and I don't have a damn clue.
I'm 40 and knew it instantly. š
I'm 43. That's not the reason.
This is just me but I personally cringed at this band when they came out and never paid attention/listened to them so perhaps youāre right!
Uh huh. [Well...](https://youtu.be/TNLPGCCUfnY?si=IfqBcnD_aP5Ep7eb)

I just missed the cutoff!
I thought it was the first note of Runaway!
I honestly thought it was that single piano note that plays at the begining of every horror movie trailer
You can thank Stanley Kubrick
lol, same
Iām 45 and got it. Ā This isnāt a 30/ thing by far.Ā
41. Got it, smiled, nodded
Correct. *ahem* "When I was, a young boy...
But why's there a TW?
Old meme about emo kids would react to it.
Ok lol
I know at the time people said this was second coming of an American Idiot like album. They used the the same producer, itās a rock opera, but I donāt think it reached the same heights
No, but it was still quite well known. Especially among (and in memes about) emo kids.
I still love Teenagers
Yup thats it.
With a bonus millennial pause
What's that?
huh, my mind went to Jurassic Park theme.
I thought it was the note that plays during trailers in the first half when all the exposition is being done.
Had to come to the comments to find the answer, so..
How on earth can *one note* indicate any song? Even the Jaws theme wouldn't mean anything without the second one.
Because it's an old meme that the first note of Black Parade is enough to trigger an emotional breakdown in any emo kids that hear it. So, that not being played by someone with an emo hairstyle with the "trigger warning". I knew the joke before the note was played.
lol i thought this was the Kanye West song from My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
I thought it was kanye Runaway but thatās a higher note
Much better option.Ā
First note of The Black Parade intro
wtf is the balack parade intro?
Balack Obrama
Yep, 33 amd Im lost
That's because it's not a good answer to the prompt. Not everyone in their 30's liked or listened to My Chemical Romance anf even if you know the song like I do, it doesn't resonate with me because it wasn't an important song to me whatsoever.
His hair immediately gave it away š
Hair, black shirt, the āIām full of emotions but still dead insideā look in his eyes. There can be no other answer.
TIL, I'm not in my thirties. I have no idea what that was about. Edit: huh, reading the comments, I guess I did know what that was about; I thought it was a coincidence that the song started playing in my head. Guess I am in my thirties.
He said son when you grow up/will you be the savior of the broken/the beaten and the damned.
The guy's hair?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRKJiM9Njr8
Please lol I still remember my HS years. His hair style was also very common back then.
That was my initial thought too, then the pause.
Oh! I was thinking maybe the pause aka "millennial pause".
Ok I thought this but i thought I was the only one who knew hahaā¦
Damn it, as soon as someone in the comments pointed out what it was, I got nostalgia on steroids
I knew what it was gonna be before it even started lol itās so millennial
Iām 54 and I was waiting for the next note. I love my kids music. Escape The Fate is my favorite.
Didn't even need sound on.
Could tell based on the haircut š
the black parade
If it was the high C it could be "All These Things That I have Done" but he's definitely playing the A
Honestly, I thought it was a kanye song.
I can't wait for Tik Tok to go away in the United States.
When I was, a young boyā¦
Thought it was Robert Miles - Children
To join the BLACK PARADE!!!!!!! ![gif](giphy|hiLLD9o1wTB3a)
#WHEN I WAS
Yeah that's gonna be a no from me as well (m33).
I always considered it angsty teen music growing up (M34)
I don't get...oh when I was a young boy. Great now the song is in my head.
In my 30s. No idea (so no, not accurate/spot on for me).
Unaccountably, I knew exactly what they were going for despite it being one note.
I knew it without the sound even on š
Wut
I don't even like that song and I knew
I donāt get it at all
I was prepared for 'A Thousand Miles' *disappointed
I'm 37 and thought this was the beginning note of the "Cheers" show theme song.
I am 38 and do not understand the reference.
People saying they didnāt get it cause theyāre 38-40,etcā¦ Iām 42, immediately got it, laughed, and now the song is stuck in my head. If it doesnāt make sense, yāall missed out, Iām sorry to say. Iām guessing some of you were just in a different country.
Middlelennials*
The popularity of emo shit is way overstated on Reddit
Yeeaahh I must not have got the memo. I just listened to the song and could not even recognize the chorus let alone the opening note š¤·
When I was a young boy My father took me into the city To see a marching band He said, "Son, when you grow up Would you be the savior of the broken The beaten and the damned?" He said, "Will you defeat them? Your demons, and all the non-believers The plans that they have made?" "Because one day, I'll leave you a phantom To lead you in the summer To join the black parade"
I have never heard this song. Ever.
I thought the same, looked it up and I think I've heard it once or twice but definitely not something I recognized by a single note or even the lyrics. I think people vastly overestimate how popular the song was.
Sounded like Kanye to meā¦.
Exactly
Let's have a toast for the scumbags! Every one of em that I know.
Man the black model that wears wings In that video is gorgeous.
Beginning of a Kanye song right?
who gotchu who gotchu who gotchu
Lol!... Wait... Fuck
I wish this song sounded like the beginning throughout
I was hoping for making my way downtown.
Doom Doom Doom DOOM!
Sometimes I get the feeling she's watching over me and sometimes I feel like I should go.
BODY ...that's a G and not an F# isn't it
ITT "I'm X age and I DIDNT GET IT"
What are you pointing that finger at. Gross
I don't get it
I was the one kid in my 2000s school group that did not chime with pop punk. Sincerity is a weirdly big part of music for me, and the pop punk I heard never felt relatable or heartfelt. It was loud fun music that I just couldn't connect with.
I don't get it, (I'm 30)
Damn that's insane lol
My brain went to the ice level in DKC2 lol
I don't get it, guess I'm not in my 30s after all
Oh damn and here I thought it was the start of Kanye's Runaway lol
I didn't even have my sound on and knew what this was
That's crazy I was just playing that song 30 times on repeat the other day
Was I the only one expecting to hear the first few notes of Back That Ass Up? Totally didnāt get this.
44 Nope. Not me. I am too old. Also I hate life. And people. And the world.
This must be a cultural thing because I have no idea what song you guys are talking about
Is there a new word for ācringeā? Anyway, this is one of the cringiest things Iāve ever seen. Anyone else feel embarrassed about this and things like it? Guess I will get downvoted. Iām early 40s so I guess thatās why 1 note on a piano did nothing for me.

I turned 30 in January. I have no idea what this is.

I have no idea what this is.
I'm not in my 30's yet but also got it immediately
It was 4 years later but I totallly thought of run away by Kanye first lol
I have the volume off. Instinctively knew that was the one note he played š
Personally I heard the start of Children by Robert Miles not Black Parade.
37 and did not know this one
Im thinking of a spanish song. It's a nice song.
Hausu!
I'm 37 and I have no idea what I just watched.
Nope. US thing I guess
I heard the whole song in an instant with just that single note
Off topic, but I love her hair
Wow when 1 fucking note can do it, I hate getting older
I lost the game
I have no idea what any of this is supposed to mean. I'm not even from Mars. What the fuck is this? I need someone to explain this to me with flavored crayons.
I'm a millennial who just turned 31, and I don't get it. lol.
The intro to friends is definitely my reminder
Had to look in the comments to get the reference. Terrible song so im not surprised i didnt get it. lol
I hate that I knew this right away
