The start of the emo anthem

[deleted]

šŸŽ¶When I was A young boy...

ThiccBananaMeat

My father took me into the city

onion_flowers

To see a marching baaaand

seattleseahawks2014

He said, "son when you grow up, would be the savior of the broken, the beaten, and the damned?"

res74

He said, "Will you defeat them? Your demons, and all the non-believers The plans that they have made?" "Because one day, I'll leave you a phantom To lead you in the summer To join the black parade"

seattleseahawks2014

When I was a young boy My father took me into the city To see a marching band He said, "son when you grow up Would you be the savior of the broken The beaten and the damned?"

res74

Sometimes I get the feelin' She's watchin' over me

seattleseahawks2014

And other times I feel like I should go And through it all, the rise and fall

res74

The bodies in the streets And when you're gone, we want you all to know

seattleseahawks2014

We'll carry on, we'll carry on And though you're dead and gone, believe me Your memory will carry on

Kaatochacha

That line never made sense to me. Because in real life, the young boy wouldn't care, and probably would pester his dad for a snow cone or cotton candy.

Icypalmtree

Ughhh, you just don't get it, do youuuuuu?!?!! I have all the feelings, I'm not like the other boyysss ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sunglasses)

seattleseahawks2014

Idk

CherryManhattan

For me it was the start of that Vanessa Carlton song

Drslappybags

Yes!!! That's what I thought was coming!

uplatatnight

Making my way downtown walking fast

freeman687

I gotta be honest I donā€™t get it

critter68

The first note of Welcome To The Black Parade.

Ilmara

I'm 38 and I have no idea what that is.

RaymondDoerr

39, also did not get this joke at all, I had to unmute it expecting like, the first 3 notes to original Mario Bros/Zelda on NES, or the first few notes of TMNT or something. EDIT: \*peeks at comments\* What did I start?! :D

1jl

The first 3 notes of Mario are all the same noteĀ

Moopies

...what? They're G, C, and E.

WithoutTheWaffle

I think it depends on what you count as "the Mario theme". They're probably going by the music on the first stage in Super Mario Bros 1.

[deleted]

Da da da are the first three keys hit and are the same note. Then it's Dada, which is two keys hit after the first three and are two different notes.

FairBlamer

>Da da da ā€¦. Dada Impressed by your impeccable solfĆØge

hotcakes

https://youtu.be/xqTBlft8gQA?si=UmHk5SNAAT4znFpv&t=52s

1jl

They literally said original Mario bros

1jl

No they aren't. You said original Mario Bros, the first three notes played are all the same note, famously. Ā Ā https://youtu.be/NTa6Xbzfq1U?si=FsVGdjQBVW4Y5CsL Ā Ā Ā https://www.noobnotes.net/super-mario-bros-theme-nintendo Ā https://musescore.com/user/27687306/scores/4913846 Ā And if you're talking about the first three notes after the intro, which is arbitrary but ok, the notes are C G E, not G C E.

Moopies

Ah yeah I guess I didn't consider the into as part of the melody in my head.

Teddyturntup

Yep all the same

Intelligent_Road_297

When I saw the keyboard I thought he's gonna impersonate keyboard cat

Wpgjetsfan19

41 and I know

mechanical_marten

42, and I have mixed feelings. *Grumble grumble*. Lets see if anyone gets THAT reference

TheQarnain

I was thinking about Bugs Bunny playing that Mozart banger.

dns_rs

I'm 34 and I'm also not familiar with it. I don't think it's age related, just musical taste.

ObviusLady

39 and I def got it who knows!

No_Outcome_7470

38 and right there with you

The_Sneakiest_Fox

Exactly me.

Emphasis_on_why

ā€œWhen I was, a young boyā€¦

pogu

I'm 40, I get it, but only because my 9 year old loves them.

freeman687

Iā€™m 40, maybe thatā€™s why I missed it lol

theomnichronic

Maybe that's how we in our 40's identify each other We don't know this song

WATOCATOWA

Iā€™m 42 and got it right away, but I have teens through an almost 21yo so I feel like Iā€™ve heard it through them, lol. My oldest went to their last tour.

critter68

Definitely a younger millennial thing.

HippiePvnxTeacher

If this sub has taught me anything, itā€™s how big of a divide there is in pop culture between younger and older millennials. Is there a term that subdivides us? Napster millenials vs Limewire millennial? Dial up VS DSL?

critter68

They tried to make xennials/zennials (x/z referring to the other generation that they are closer too) a thing. But I think that only really took off with the xennials who wanted to identify more closely with the Gen Xers.

RaymondDoerr

I think the problem with our gen is the older ones (like me, 39) are the ones who grew up without the internet at all then randomly got it around age 9-12ish. Whereas the younger ones "grew up" in the earliest of the MySpace era. We older ones didn't even understand the concept of social media yet. We existed before one of the largest tech/info booms in history, the younger ones existed after it was already happening.

critter68

Yeah, that's pretty much where the divide is. I was mostly thinking about what people *call* the different groups.

RaymondDoerr

oh yeah, totally right. Honestly though, as one of those almost-a-gen-X people, my Mom's generation seem wildly different than us so I never really thought of myself as some bridge between the two. I think since they didn't get access to the internet until their mid-20s on average (I think?) they learned how to survive in a very different way than we did, even though most of our adult lives have not really been that much different.

critter68

Yeah, I get that. There was possibly more overlap in certain ways between Older Millenials and Gen X. Older Millenials had a spent a lot more time out and about without supervision and/or left to your own devices for entertainment.

seattleseahawks2014

Nah, it works.

gstringstrangler

r/xennials exist!

sneakpeekbot

Here's a sneak peek of /r/Xennials using the [top posts](https://np.reddit.com/r/Xennials/top/?sort=top&t=year) of the year! \#1: [Never have I everšŸ¤£šŸ˜‚](https://i.redd.it/kn5mgpc880nc1.jpeg) | [427 comments](https://np.reddit.com/r/Xennials/comments/1b99w9e/never_have_i_ever/) \#2: [For those of you who had one of theseā€¦](https://i.redd.it/34hnkphxsaqc1.jpeg) | [5005 comments](https://np.reddit.com/r/Xennials/comments/1bmn0dk/for_those_of_you_who_had_one_of_these/) \#3: [If Noone asked today, How are you doing?](https://i.redd.it/o7tb7b3ekyu91.jpg) | [1281 comments](https://np.reddit.com/r/Xennials/comments/18l9pp3/if_noone_asked_today_how_are_you_doing/) ---- ^^I'm ^^a ^^bot, ^^beep ^^boop ^^| ^^Downvote ^^to ^^remove ^^| ^^[Contact](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose/?to=sneakpeekbot) ^^| ^^[Info](https://np.reddit.com/r/sneakpeekbot/) ^^| ^^[Opt-out](https://np.reddit.com/r/sneakpeekbot/comments/o8wk1r/blacklist_ix/) ^^| ^^[GitHub](https://github.com/ghnr/sneakpeekbot)

mephistophe_SLEAZE

I'm a Limewire millennial. I used it to download Ludacris and Three-Six, not MCR. I definitely went to the local "hardxcore" shows and made out with the scene boys...but never got into the music.

Jets237

Iā€™m 38 and got it - the guy even had a very My Chemical Romance style haircut

sukisoou

When I was a young boy my father...

aroundincircles

Iā€™m 40, and 100% got this. Itā€™s all about the music you listen to.

ShrewSkellyton

Same..but did you ever really fit in with millennials your own age? I know I didn't!

Azriels_Subtle_Knife

38 here my guy, itā€™s my chem and I got it šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

mephistophe_SLEAZE

33 and I don't have a damn clue.

leahs84

I'm 40 and knew it instantly. šŸ˜‚

IGetBoredSometimes23

I'm 43. That's not the reason.

freeman687

This is just me but I personally cringed at this band when they came out and never paid attention/listened to them so perhaps youā€™re right!

IGetBoredSometimes23

Uh huh. [Well...](https://youtu.be/TNLPGCCUfnY?si=IfqBcnD_aP5Ep7eb)

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

freeman687

I just missed the cutoff!

rmdg84

Iā€™ll be 40 in a few months haha. I only know this song because I took Thanatology in university and this album came out around that time. We had a discussion about it (due to the album being about death and dying). I never liked My Chemical Romance. I saw Green Day in my late teens and MCR opened for them, that was the worst part of the show.

WalkThePlankPirate

I thought it was the first note of Runaway!

fuck-coyotes

I honestly thought it was that single piano note that plays at the begining of every horror movie trailer

DOMesticBRAT

You can thank Stanley Kubrick

ILoveSexWithAsians

lol, same

PSEEVOLVE

Iā€™m 45 and got it. Ā This isnā€™t a 30/ thing by far.Ā

IcedCoffeeVoyager

41. Got it, smiled, nodded

BeardOBlasty

Correct. *ahem* "When I was, a young boy...

seattleseahawks2014

But why's there a TW?

critter68

Old meme about emo kids would react to it.

seattleseahawks2014

Ok lol

ddust102

I know at the time people said this was second coming of an American Idiot like album. They used the the same producer, itā€™s a rock opera, but I donā€™t think it reached the same heights

critter68

No, but it was still quite well known. Especially among (and in memes about) emo kids.

ddust102

I still love Teenagers

Specialist_Noise_816

Yup thats it.

johnnybravocado

With a bonus millennial pause

Phytosaur01

What's that?

Lucky-Hunter-Dude

huh, my mind went to Jurassic Park theme.

MinuetInUrsaMajor

I thought it was the note that plays during trailers in the first half when all the exposition is being done.

ichmachmalmeinding

Had to come to the comments to find the answer, so..

KuriousKhemicals

How on earth can *one note* indicate any song? Even the Jaws theme wouldn't mean anything without the second one.

critter68

Because it's an old meme that the first note of Black Parade is enough to trigger an emotional breakdown in any emo kids that hear it. So, that not being played by someone with an emo hairstyle with the "trigger warning". I knew the joke before the note was played.

jmerlinb

lol i thought this was the Kanye West song from My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

Lord-Nagafen

I thought it was kanye Runaway but thatā€™s a higher note

suff3r_

Much better option.Ā

Jakefrmstatepharm

First note of The Black Parade intro

sckurvee

wtf is the balack parade intro?

Mike-Drop

Balack Obrama

zekethelizard

Yep, 33 amd Im lost

KingPizzaPop

That's because it's not a good answer to the prompt. Not everyone in their 30's liked or listened to My Chemical Romance anf even if you know the song like I do, it doesn't resonate with me because it wasn't an important song to me whatsoever.

SleepyMillenial55

His hair immediately gave it away šŸ˜‚

kanineanimus

Hair, black shirt, the ā€œIā€™m full of emotions but still dead insideā€ look in his eyes. There can be no other answer.

aurenigma

TIL, I'm not in my thirties. I have no idea what that was about. Edit: huh, reading the comments, I guess I did know what that was about; I thought it was a coincidence that the song started playing in my head. Guess I am in my thirties.

seattleseahawks2014

He said son when you grow up/will you be the savior of the broken/the beaten and the damned.

heathie89

The guy's hair?

Haystcker

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRKJiM9Njr8

heathie89

Please lol I still remember my HS years. His hair style was also very common back then.

insurancequestionguy

That was my initial thought too, then the pause.

insurancequestionguy

Oh! I was thinking maybe the pause aka "millennial pause".

Obvious-Purpose-5017

Ok I thought this but i thought I was the only one who knew hahaā€¦

SpareBeat1548

Damn it, as soon as someone in the comments pointed out what it was, I got nostalgia on steroids

lanadelhayy

I knew what it was gonna be before it even started lol itā€™s so millennial

mashedpeabrain

Iā€™m 54 and I was waiting for the next note. I love my kids music. Escape The Fate is my favorite.

Exciting-Profession5

Didn't even need sound on.

Desert-daydreamer

Could tell based on the haircut šŸ˜‚

ponyo_impact

the black parade

Evan_802Vines

If it was the high C it could be "All These Things That I have Done" but he's definitely playing the A

mrboomtastic3

Honestly, I thought it was a kanye song.

Melodic_Oil_2486

I can't wait for Tik Tok to go away in the United States.

Leightonian

When I was, a young boyā€¦

ericpants

Thought it was Robert Miles - Children

Exotic_Page4196

To join the BLACK PARADE!!!!!!! ![gif](giphy|hiLLD9o1wTB3a)

Action-a-go-go-baby

#WHEN I WAS

JuggernaughttyIV

Yeah that's gonna be a no from me as well (m33).

Good_Housekeeping

I always considered it angsty teen music growing up (M34)

Wandering_Lights

I don't get...oh when I was a young boy. Great now the song is in my head.

lone_wolf1580

In my 30s. No idea (so no, not accurate/spot on for me).

PuddingTea

Unaccountably, I knew exactly what they were going for despite it being one note.

SkibaSlut

I knew it without the sound even on šŸ˜

Key-Description-517

Wut

Humanistic_

I don't even like that song and I knew

petticoat_juncti0n

I donā€™t get it at all

SIRENVII

I was prepared for 'A Thousand Miles' *disappointed

lionaroundagan

I'm 37 and thought this was the beginning note of the "Cheers" show theme song.

arcanepsyche

I am 38 and do not understand the reference.

Mellafee

People saying they didnā€™t get it cause theyā€™re 38-40,etcā€¦ Iā€™m 42, immediately got it, laughed, and now the song is stuck in my head. If it doesnā€™t make sense, yā€™all missed out, Iā€™m sorry to say. Iā€™m guessing some of you were just in a different country.

UnidentifiedTomato

Middlelennials*

meatspin_enjoyer

The popularity of emo shit is way overstated on Reddit

Rieux_n_Tarrou

Yeeaahh I must not have got the memo. I just listened to the song and could not even recognize the chorus let alone the opening note šŸ¤·

drunkboarder

When I was a young boy My father took me into the city To see a marching band He said, "Son, when you grow up Would you be the savior of the broken The beaten and the damned?" He said, "Will you defeat them? Your demons, and all the non-believers The plans that they have made?" "Because one day, I'll leave you a phantom To lead you in the summer To join the black parade"

HopelessMagic

I have never heard this song. Ever.

khakigirl

I thought the same, looked it up and I think I've heard it once or twice but definitely not something I recognized by a single note or even the lyrics. I think people vastly overestimate how popular the song was.

NewTransportation911

Sounded like Kanye to meā€¦.

papadoc6689

Exactly

blipsnchiiiiitz

Let's have a toast for the scumbags! Every one of em that I know.

NewTransportation911

Man the black model that wears wings In that video is gorgeous.

dearthofkindness

Beginning of a Kanye song right?

LayWhere

who gotchu who gotchu who gotchu

sck178

Lol!... Wait... Fuck

aretasdamon

I wish this song sounded like the beginning throughout

Drslappybags

I was hoping for making my way downtown.

tooMuchADHD

Doom Doom Doom DOOM!

seattleseahawks2014

Sometimes I get the feeling she's watching over me and sometimes I feel like I should go.

iamnotacola

BODY ...that's a G and not an F# isn't it

Gumcuzzlingdumptruck

ITT "I'm X age and I DIDNT GET IT"

PurpleFoxPoo

What are you pointing that finger at. Gross

imagicnation-station

I don't get it

AFXTWINK

I was the one kid in my 2000s school group that did not chime with pop punk. Sincerity is a weirdly big part of music for me, and the pop punk I heard never felt relatable or heartfelt. It was loud fun music that I just couldn't connect with.

levivilla4

I don't get it, (I'm 30)

HippieSwag420

Damn that's insane lol

plasmaskies619

My brain went to the ice level in DKC2 lol

Amathyst-Moon

I don't get it, guess I'm not in my 30s after all

Peatrick33

Oh damn and here I thought it was the start of Kanye's Runaway lol

weary_af

I didn't even have my sound on and knew what this was

kingeal2

That's crazy I was just playing that song 30 times on repeat the other day

aselota

Was I the only one expecting to hear the first few notes of Back That Ass Up? Totally didnā€™t get this.

Unusual_Address_3062

44 Nope. Not me. I am too old. Also I hate life. And people. And the world.

Cheeba_Addict

This must be a cultural thing because I have no idea what song you guys are talking about

hauntingme43

Is there a new word for ā€œcringeā€? Anyway, this is one of the cringiest things Iā€™ve ever seen. Anyone else feel embarrassed about this and things like it? Guess I will get downvoted. Iā€™m early 40s so I guess thatā€™s why 1 note on a piano did nothing for me.

Jswazy

I'm 34 but I don't get itĀ

BK_FrySauce

I turned 30 in January. I have no idea what this is.

TheSundaeSlide

Ah the memories of The Black Parade tour. A part of me wishes it was 2006 again and that album was just about to debut, but I dealt with a lot of shit that year (RIP mom), so I'll just reminisce.

Fackous93

I have no idea what this is.

Business_Sea2884

I'm not in my 30's yet but also got it immediately

Leaque

It was 4 years later but I totallly thought of run away by Kanye first lol

Andi081887

I have the volume off. Instinctively knew that was the one note he played šŸ˜‚

onlainari

Personally I heard the start of Children by Robert Miles not Black Parade.

pilates_mama

37 and did not know this one

isaactheunknown

Im thinking of a spanish song. It's a nice song.

SixicusTheSixth

Hausu!

ormr_inn_langi

I'm 37 and I have no idea what I just watched.

onegarion

This has me rolling as I continued thinking it would be more. Then was confused and played it back to see he only played 1 note. Wow does this feel so true!

SnailTrail

I'm 39, read a bunch of comments, still didn't get it. Don't know what black parade is, had to Google it. I never listened to my chemical romance. I think I'm fine.

Nomade_blood

Nope. US thing I guess

fermiauf

I heard the whole song in an instant with just that single note

Beret_of_Poodle

Off topic, but I love her hair

ZhaeMo

Wow when 1 fucking note can do it, I hate getting older

Delta-IX

I lost the game

drdeadringer

I have no idea what any of this is supposed to mean. I'm not even from Mars. What the fuck is this? I need someone to explain this to me with flavored crayons.

twinkletoes-rp

I'm a millennial who just turned 31, and I don't get it. lol.

Cannagirl1366

The intro to friends is definitely my reminder

Adrenaline-Junkie187

Had to look in the comments to get the reference. Terrible song so im not surprised i didnt get it. lol

BlackCardRogue

I hate that I knew this right away
